I guess there are two types of sad songs. One that is like crying in sorrow and the other that is complaining in sorrow. The complaining ones usually tend to be faster. Even my all-time favourite song, Kya hua tera wada is not exactly what I would call slow.

i think there's a sufi-type song from namaste london- it sounds like a fast sad number to me. perhaps sufi songs can have that quality?

while, tadap tadap exuberates anguish, smoldering pain more then sadness.

I think Rita u hv explained the diff very well...sadness and anguish/smoldering pain is different. the fast pace songs mentioned here actually expresses the second part of the emotion and not the pathos, sadness, loneliness or separation that the song "hum tumse juda ho ke" is trying to express. such songs unless is slow i dnt think will give us the same feel.

Agree. I think the fast-paced numbers are suited for anger and anguish coming from a soul which is screaming with emotion.

I think volume is very important too, not just the pace. Remember "duniya ke rakhwaaley" or "yeh mahalon, yek takhton, yeh taajon ki duiniya" - in both these songs, Rafi literally shouts to convey the pain in a spine-tingling manner.

pain and anguish r different than sadness....true or false? dukh mein chillatey kisi ko naheen suna jab ki naaraaz ho ker chillatey bahuton ko dekha hai.

i feel slow tempo is suited more for sad songs. don't we all slow down a lot when we r feeling low and down? then why shdn't we convey the sadness in a tempo that's more natural with this emotion?

I think anger and anguish do get mixed with sadness sometimes so you have songs like "duniya ke rakhwaale" and "yeh mahalon yeh takhton".

The contemplative, sad songs on the other hand are slow like the classic "kabhi khud pe kabhi haalat pe rona aaya" or "din dhal jaaye".

i feel a sense of helpness along with anger and anguish in these two songs rather than sadness. but that's my perception.

beautiful songs sahana. especially kabhi khud pe toh kabhi haalaat pe rona aayaa....baat itnee thee har ik baat pe rona aayaa.

may be we all can come up with our favorite sad songs and list them here!!! the songs we like to listen when we r feeling down, beaten, low, or plain old sad😊 what say girl!!!

I feel those two songs duniya ke rakhwale and yeh mehlo yeh takhto show not just sadness but anguish with frustration of unable to do anything. That could be the reason for the volume..

U take yeh mehlo yeh takhto song...it starts at a slow pace showing the sadness. but picks up the volume later on, giving out that feeling of frustration that he is unable to do anything, the feeling of helplessness.

i feel more dejection than sadness there di. that's what i was trying to point out earlier too. a sort of helplessness that is frustrating the protagonist. sadness also has helplessness associated with it at times but that helplessness is not frustrating...it just eats u from inside.

r u getting what i'm trying to say here? i think i'm not finding the words to convey my thoughts on sadness here...and that's very frustrating😆

but picks up the volume later on, giving out that feeling of frustration that he is unable to do anything, the feeling of helplessness.

bingo. my thoughts exactly😊

okie....lemme try again.

for me, sadness is a state when one experiences emotions like gloominess. one is not in a state of well-being. best example would be mourning a loss like death of a near and dear one or breaking up with someone u loved with all ur heart. one no longer feels cheerful when they r mourning or sad. i don't think fast tempos suit this uncheerful disposition no matter what the lyrics say.

the two songs mentioned above - duniya key rakhwale and mehlon takhton ki duniya is more about anguish for being helpless...being powerless....being unable to change/manage something on ur own. there's an anguish and anger resulting out of this helplessness.....not sadness.
