That's a great example of a sad song however, if I remember right, the pace varies throughout the song..sometimes fast, sometimes slow but yes, it is most certainly loud - as it should be for a soul in anguish (only I would have preferred some other soul, not Salman Khan!)

There you said it all actually. If a sad song makes you dance it shows the song is not generating the same feeling as it is supposed to do.

I would prefer a sad song to have good lyrics and to that the slow pace. Not a foot tapping number.

Right Sahana. And actually what I feel is it's the slow part, even though loud there, which touches you. The part - To lut Gaye, To lut Gaye Hum Teri Mohabbat Mein - is slow and thats the part which really expresses the acute pain. The song composition is more like going fast and then suddenly crying aloud but in a slow pace showing the pain.

Interesting topic Sahanaji! I do agree with you that "Chalte Chalte" should have been a bit slower. It really doesn't sound like a sad song at times. But there are other somewhat fast sad songs that I consider perfect because the tempo suggests a kind of frustration or uncertainty that fits with the song. Two songs where I think this works well are "Tanhayee" from Dil Chahta Hai and "Roya Re" from Dhokha (which I recommend to anyone who hadn't heard it). If those were slowed down, I think it would take away from the feel.

Okay here is my opinion. When I hear "Ya Ali", I don't feel sad at all, but when I hear a song like "Chahunga main tujhe sanjh sawere", the pain in the lyrics is echoed in the music as well. Sometimes loud percussion is used to emphasize the power in the sadness, like "Tadap Tadap", which doesn't take away from the sad feeling. There are those songs that have a fast tempo, but the singing is slow, like the notes which the singer sings are held really long giving it the effect of a sad song. That can also work sometimes, like "Tanhayee" from Dil Chahta Hai, or the song that Hafsa posted.

Now my post which actually inspired this discussion was about remixes. Some DJ had taken a Sonu Nigam cover version of Rafi Saab's "Hum tumse juda hoke, mar jayenge ro ro ke" and sped it up and added a techno beat to it. My friend made fun of that remix saying that it sounds more like "Hum tumse juda hoke, mar jayenge naach naach ke".

I agree with your opinion.... I think though sad songs with beats dont have the same feeling (like Ya Ali) it could still work like, Tanhayee or Sajni. I guess it just depends on the composition and how its sung. But def the power in Tadap Tadap was really becasue of the loudness. But I think that if Tadap had a nice beat to it, it would have taken all that feeling out of the song.
