Why do people like dark heros/angry young men?

This is really a genuine question. Be it TV, BW or HW, people always seem to like the dark hero/ angry young men. And it's worse when they try to defend the actions of these characters. As I feel like throttling the men's throat when I see them abusing (be it physically or psychologically) women. So, why does such a trend exist, even now? What is so loveable about these characters? Can this trend ever be eradicated?

A dark character is not always abusive towards women. Could you give an example of what kind of characters you have in mind?

I don't like abusive characters at all.
Dark / gray character doesn't necessarily means you nees to manhandle people.

Whether he is Murderer or Rapist or Priest or Rabbi I need the character to have a sense of humor. Even if their comedy comes at the most inappropriate times.😆😆

They gotta bring the funny

If this is another thread about the prevalence of angry young man manhandling and then falling in luv with the girl on TV soaps, then I have to say women abusing women is also very common on TV shows and those shows get high trp ratings... But nobody complains about it.

Agree dark heros/angry young men trend needs to stop, so does cynical character such as Katniss who is seen as the only strong and badass character. Strength comes in many different forms.

Ikr, there's so many shows like that. Saath nibhana saathiya built a whole foundation on that 😆

Yeh rishta used to have the lamest scenes like the bahu and saas having fights over sabudana khichdi or whatever 😆😆

I remember a show called Bhagonwali on ZEETV, where the orphaned heroine is treated like a servant by her aunts and uncles in her own house... She faces constant verbal abuse from the ladies of the house but she bears everything and does all the household chores cheerfully

One scene disturbed me very much... One of the aunts "accidentally" pours hot oil over her hand for no reason at all (Actually there was a lame reason, I forgot, but the aunt didn't want the girl to go out, wanted her to stay home, something like that)

And they portrayed it like it was no big deal...

It might be a combination of a few things and I'll give my views on it.

Image: sometimes people like the image the dark hero has because it is off beat and not always something we see. Movies in general like to portray men as tough, but sexy and buff but good "clean" men. SOMETIMES THEY ARE SEXY!: Yes, some bad guys are so hot you can't help but fall for them.
Lifestyle: the lifestyle these characters have can be seen as bad or that they are troubled, and some people can relate to this. Though, not all dark characters are abusive, some are, and some people like it.
Personality: they just have such an attitude that is smartly executed or clever, you tend to like the character. They can be softies, but with the hard exterior for most of the world. Sometimes their smart@ss comments pull you in...?

I am just generalizing here, but this is what makes me like some dark characters.
