Ikr, there's so many shows like that. Saath nibhana saathiya built a whole foundation on that 😆

Yeh rishta used to have the lamest scenes like the bahu and saas having fights over sabudana khichdi or whatever 😆😆

sabudana khichdi fight seems much better as now yeh rishta new female lead cries n fights with dadi saas who asks her tone down jewellery in someone else's wedding 🤣

Dark characters are okay... depending on the character.

Angry men are a put off though... if there's anything I feel like running away from it's the hotheads.

Movies and tv shows portray these angry young men as the ideal ones who are this abusive because they had a dark past and voila it justifies everything they do. 🤣

Because dark brooding hero, who is typically cynical ans hates the world is the ultimate challenge

If you can tame him and make him fall for you and make you your world, you habe won a huge challenge, no one makes a better partner than reformed bad boy

Add to that its the extreme opposite of the type of heroines that usually end up doing the job, conventional, with secret inner strength, going through challenges of life cheerfully and voila !

Ultimate romance catnip

The opposite is also true

Simple ordinary guy falling for the crazy girl , taking risks and she becomes a sati saadvhi when she falls in love with him.

Men like them because they do such stuff themselves or want to do such stuff themselves in real life.
Women watch because they face such men in their own lives and often try their best to see some good in such men or hope they can change them with so called love, devotion blah blah. Or they feel a sense of hope when they see such male characters sudharo-fied on-screen 😆

Others get kicks watching how a wild horse will be perhaps tamed someday.

I LOOOVE broody, angsty and downright sinister heroes 😈. But only in the fictional world, especially novels since they are entertaining as hell to read about. I was rooting for SRK in Darr and wanted Sunny Deol to die instead 🤣. But obviously dealing with these kind of men in real life would be a living nightmare. I've read all kinds of novels, and watched many movies, but the characters that have different layers have always intrigued me the most. Also, television and novels have always focused on the bad hero being more emotionally involved with the gal, after he comes to a realisation that he has a heart lawl. It's just sooo satisfying seeing a proud asshole end up grovelling on his knees for the heroine.

Yeah well bullshit sells

In real life, leopard never change their spot and what you see is what you get.

Run as far as it is possible from these losers

There are multiple reasons why dark characters are popular.

- Often times heroes are portrayed as very white and idealistic. That makes them too good and unrelatable. Shades of grey make a person more real. (Arjun/Bheema/Karna are more popular than the likes of Yudhisthira, cops who bend the law for justice are more relatable than the upright ones, iconic Vijay Dinanath Chauhan is essentially a good man who does good things in a dark deplorable manner)
- Psychologically dark characters are way more intriguing than the good characters. They provoke our brain cells and makes us wonder what makes them that way. (Draco is more interesting than Harry. The story of a pickpocket is more interesting than the story of an ordinary teacher or office clerk, every movie on serial killers and gangsters - there are more movies on them than revolutionary world changers)
- Civilization has conditioned humans to seek and tame wildness. Whether it is a love interest who does it or a mentor - a dark character is often seen as a beast to be tamed. It stokes human ego of taming wilderness. (Darryl's softness for Beth and Carol in Walking Dead, Jai and Veeru's loyalty to Thakur, the loyalty to Rana Pratap Singh in Karma)
- The archaic fallacious notion that bad boys make better lovers or romanticization of taming the bad boy (a whole slew of Salman films in the late nineties, Ghulam)
- They manifest a darkness we socially cannot. We vicariously express our inner darkness through them. (50 shades of grey is a prime example, BDSM fascinates everyone, but we are too afraid of inflicting or receiving pain, even for people into it - it is embarrassing to admit, hence such stories fulfill our dark fantasies)
- Sometimes its just an actor, character or script that stands out. (SRK in Darr is one example, the script calls for a villainous character and in the Hollywood original the character is the villain you dislike, SRK portrayed it in such a nuanced manner that even the sane of us were rooting for a psychotic dangerous stalker instead of the actually good boyfriend)

People like to believe that they can "change" and "fix" the badboy. Turn them into good men. The worse the guy, the better the pride in transforming him. People are suckers for that kinda stuff. Makes you believe anyone is reformable.
