You can take it from here. There are more female superstars than males because female oriented movies cost less and female oriented stories had lot of audience. The years when actress could reign is short and audience is more accepting of new female face.
May be female oriented stories started to diminish after the rise of TV as a medium (as female audience shifted their attention). Specially after daily soaps. Now there are female superstars in TV.
Sanaya, Drishti and Surbhi found more success than Barun/Gurmeet/Vivian/KSG in telly. Surbhi ran a soap where male leads kept changing. But such success by female stars is not shown in Bollywood.
