We have seen a lot of number 1 actresses but being a number 1 actress is different than being a superstar. A superstar is someone who can carry the whole film on her shoulder. A superstar is someone who can make audience go crazy for her. Its totally different feat/achievement. Not many actors/actresses achieve that.

Five actresses who I think have achieved that superstardom are

1. Sridevi

2. Madhuri Dixit

3. Kajol

4. Katrina Kaif

5. Deepika Padukone

I am sure there might be superstar actresses before Sridevi as well like Hema, Rekha etc? But I have always heard how Sridevi made her films a huge success.

What do you guys think?

I think I agree with most of your list except Katrina, in whose place there could be Kangana or Kareena.

The reason why I included Katrina was that she carried some of her films on her own shoulder like New York, MBKD, RN, TMK and even to some extent AJPKGK, etc. She had power to make audience go crazy with her songs like Sheila Ki Jawani, Chikini Chameli. Kareena being a better actress could not do that although not everyone can have 17 years old+ career which itself is an achievement.

Kareena could had achieve that feat if her film choices were better. Kangana made films like Queen, TWMR a big hit but she isn't that consistent.

It was Hema Malini who started trend of Number 1heroine. This list is incomplete without her. List in line of seniority films wise: -

1. Hema

2.Rekha

3.Sridevi

4. Madhuri

5.Kajol

^^ Well, it could be a difference in opinion but I think Katrina's dances definitely make people go crazy but I never felt like the audience went to the theatre to watch her. They, including me, love her songs but don't watch a movie because of her. Not even New York or MBKD for that matter. I wouldn't call her a Superstar in that sense but if it's only about the craze among people then yes, she definitely has a big fan following.

Kangana and Kareena might not have had huge successes but people watched a movie because of them. Especially after Queen, people want to go watch a movie because Kangana is in it. For Kareena, she was always admired for her beauty and after Jab We Met, I felt like she could draw the audience to the theatre.. For Katrina, it is always dependent on the lead actor to draw in the audience.

Ruby Myers aka Sulochana - The Queen of silent movie

Fearless Nadia - She broke male stereotype. First action actress
Kanan Devi - First lady of Bengali cinema. Her work in Bollywood is equally good.
Mumtaz Shanti - Lead of Kismet
Devika Rani - Queen of Bombay Talkies

Forget about carrying the movie, these ran with it-

Madhubala
Mala Sinha

Called Southern threat -
Vyjantimala

You can take it from here. There are more female superstars than males because female oriented movies cost less and female oriented stories had lot of audience. The years when actress could reign is short and audience is more accepting of new female face.

You're right but like I said its post 1980 list. I feel that pre 1980 time was better for actresses because more female oriented films were accepted.
