Zoya refused the vest the officer tried to slip over her. "He won't hurt me." The phone was on mute so Adil couldn't hear what was going on outside the room.
"We don't know that. Put the vest on, or you're not going in," Asad said. "I don't think you should do this, anyway, but apparently that's not my call." He glared at Vivian. "There're rules against this kind of stuff."
"I've never been big on rules," Vivian muttered. He looked at Asad. "I'm not going to let anything happen to her."
"You can't guarantee that!"
" Asad." Her quiet command stopped him. She raised a hand and patted his cheek. "Stop." He swallowed hard, stared at her a brief moment then stepped back. "Just pray."
He nodded. She nodded at Vivian. "I'm ready."
Vivian rapped on the door. "She's coming in, Adil. How do you want to get the baby to us?"
"She'll put him outside the door as soon as she's in here."
said, "I can't do that. That would be like handing you another hostage. You don't trust us, I get that. Do you trust your cousin?"
A pause. "Yeah. I trust her."
"But I don't trusthim," Asad muttered.
"I'll stand in front of the door while you put him on the floor behind me, okay?" Zoya called to the man inside. "I'll be your shield, Adil."
Another long pause. "Fine."
Zoya took her stance in front of the door. She glanced at Asad and Vivian nodded. "Open the door, Adil."
The door cracked.

She gazed into her cousin's eyes and swallowed hard. He held the screaming baby in one hand and a weapon in the other. "Put him on the floor and move back. I'll come with you," she said.
The door opened wider. Zoya kept her body between Adil and the cops. Adil crouched, bending at the knees, keeping his weapon held on her. As Adil laid Arhaan on the floor to the side, she acted.
She grabbed his hair and yanked. Hard.
He screamed and went down.
Vivian and Asad bolted into action. Asad grabbed the baby and Zoya felt him snag the back of her shirt and spin her out of the way.
Vivian had Adil on the floor, knee in the man's back. The SWAT members swarmed the area, and within seconds, Adil was cuffed. He screamed his fury, spittle flying. His eyes met Zoya's, and the hatred there brought tears to her eyes. "I'm sorry," she whispered.
Asad closed one arm around her and brought her to his chest. She sighed and leaned into him, checking to see that Arhaan was unharmed. His loud protests reassured her. "What were you thinking, grabbing him like that?" Asad demanded.
"I figured Arhaan might get banged up a little, but that was better than letting Adil have me as a hostage." Sadness filled her. "Right up until the moment I was about to step inside, I didn't believe he would really hurt me. Until I saw his eyes. He was so desperate. So far gone. So...empty. I realized the only way to save him was to make sure he was arrested. Before the cops killed him and before he hurt anyone else."
"It was a risky move, but you did great."
She sniffed back a few tears.
"Yeah. Great."
Asad gripped her hand and pulled her to face him. "We need to talk."
"I know."
"I have something I want to ask you."
Ayaan walked up. "The baby's parents are on their way."
Zoya nodded. "Good."
An officer called his name. "Catch you guys later."
He left and she gazed up at Asad. "What was it you wanted to ask me?"
"I wanted to say...I'm still in love with you, and I need to know...do you still love me?

Speechless, Zoya allowed Asad to lead her out of the building and onto the sidewalk. When he turned her to face him, she gaped. "You love me?"
He kissed her and she was simply too shocked to do anything but let him. When he lifted his head, he said, "I was crushed when I came home and saw you on the front porch with that guy. I'd never cared about anyone like I did you. Never loved anyone like I loved you." He paused and swallowed hard. "I was going to ask you to marry me."
She gaped. "What?"
"Then I saw you with that guy, but instead of asking you for an explanation, I chose to wallow in my hurt and bury myself in my job."
"I'm sorry."
He stroked her cheek. "Me, too. But we can make things right now, can't we?"
Vulnerability flashed and she sighed. "You were right about Adil," she whispered. "I couldn't see it."
"Is that why you pulled away from me in the warehouse?"
She nodded. "I was mad at you for bringing this on my family, but standing there, looking at Adil, I realized you saved my family from a lot of grief. If you hadn't convinced me to let you be my pretend boyfriend""
"Love doesn't want to recognize the bad side of someone," Asad said. "And I really think it's time I was more than your pretend boyfriend, don't you?"
Her heart thudded and she knew he could see her pulse pounding in her throat.
He leaned over and kissed her once. Twice. "I love you,Zoya Farooqui."
She gave a breathless laugh. "I love you, too, Asad."
"Where's Arhaan?"
Zoya turned at Aliya's frantic cry. Her sister slammed the door of the police cruiser.
"He's right here," Ayaan said.
Zoya watched Aliya rub her palms down her jean-clad thighs then reach for her son. She pulled him into her arms and kissed his face. He quieted instantly. Peace reigned for a split second before his howls increased in intensity. "He's probably wet and hungry," Zoya said.
Aliya stepped forward and gave Zoya a hug. "That officer said you saved Arhaan. I want the full story."
"I'll be happy to tell you." She glanced at Asad, gave him a soft smile then looked back at her sister. "As long as you promise to be my matron of honor sometime in the not-so-distant future."
Asad's kiss caused such a roaring in her ears she barely heard Aliya's squeal of joy. He pulled back and smiled. "I love you."
She grinned. "Forever."
