Guess Who?

'A story for the dreamers by the dreamers,' he said and instantly got every dreamer hooked to the intense emotional roller coaster called ‘Sapne Vs Everyone.’ Today, the show is all over social media feeds, watchlists and conversations, with audiences obsessing over every detail of the breakout series and the man behind it. Actor, director, writer, he wears many hats and seems to get every single one of them just right. If you have binge watched the recent season of ‘Sapne Vs Everyone,’ chances are you have already found yourself googling more about him, scrolling endlessly through his Instagram or replaying his interviews to understand the mind behind the show.

Well, while doing exactly that after finishing the latest season, we stumbled upon an interview where the creator spoke about his unexpected journey into acting from a full time sales job at the ‘Times Of India.’ The man in question is none other than Ambrish Verma.

From a SALES JOB at TOI to entering TVF:

In a conversation with The Comment Section, Ambrish opened up about shifting from Delhi to Mumbai and how one conversation changed the course of his life forever.

‘‘When I got my job at Times of India, everyone was getting allocated different geographies. One friend got Bombay, I got Delhi. We were a little concerned for that friend, Vishesh was his name. He had a single mom, so he wanted to be with her. So the day the locations were assigned, we were talking and he was like, ‘Yaar, I’ll talk to HR. I can’t go to Bombay right now, it’s not possible for me.’ At the back of my head, I knew that if I was in Bombay, I could at least do some theatre. Purely not as a profession, you know, but at least I could get to do what I wanted to do. Like, thoda theatre kar lunga, weekends pe kuch workshops kar lunga. So I told Vishesh, ‘Bhai, let’s talk and see if we can swap. You take Delhi, I’ll take Bombay.’ We tried with HR and it worked. I came to Bombay. So first, that’s how it started.’

He further shared how he balanced theatre with his corporate job and eventually joined The Viral Fever in sales, while quietly continuing auditions and stage work on weekends.

‘‘And the idea was to just do it on weekends. And I actually did do that on weekends. I worked backstage in theatre a little because they wouldn’t give acting parts. Because if you are to do a part in a play, you have to be available all seven days. I was only available on weekends because I had a job. Then I joined TVF, again in sales, because at Times I had become really bored. Here, at least it felt like I was selling something I actually liked. But I had still come there for sales.’’

'I thrive on confidence, had no ulterior motives,' he says about sales job at TVF:

What makes his story even more inspiring is that Ambrish never entered the industry with shortcuts or hidden agendas. He revealed that despite working at TVF, he never approached anyone for acting opportunities because he wanted his journey to happen organically.

‘And again, that’s why I say I never move anywhere with ulterior motives. When I joined TVF, I was very clear that I would never ask anyone there for acting work. Because I thrive on confidence, and my confidence comes from the fact that I have clarity about what I want and I’m not hiding anything. So I was very clear that I wouldn’t tell anyone at TVF that I wanted to act. I was still doing weekend theatre outside, still giving auditions on weekends. No one here knew. Only for one reason. It’s just my personality, you know. I never wanted, and I still don’t want.’’

'Bhookha marega Ambrish,' was said to him, but at 29, he CHOSE his dreams:

While today the actor, writer and director is basking in immense love and recognition, many would be shocked to know that he decided to fully pursue acting only at the age of 29 after quitting his stable full time job despite loans and responsibilities.

Recalling the doubts people around him had at the time, he shared, “Someone told me, a very close friend of mine and who was in a position of clout that he could have helped me back then. Abhi I am just saying this, not that I take it against him now. Now. He said, ‘Amrish kya kar raha hai bhai? Bhookha marega. What are you even doing? Tu bhai yeh job chhodke, an MBA background, you are wanting to be an actor at this age?’ I was almost 29 then, sitting in Gurgaon, you have no work. Aise nahi mere paas kaam aana shuru bhi nahi hua tha. Hmm. So what are you even thinking?

He continued, “And that makes you sit and think that jo main kar raha hoon, yeh practical bhi hai? That yeah, so true. At this age, I am saying that I am leaving everything aside. I had an education loan then, I had a home loan then, hum recently naye ghar mein shift hue the and and, But you sit and you think that yeah, but still, I still want to do this. Now jo uske baad, having considered all of it, if you still feel you want to do it, now you should do it. Now you should.

Today, as ‘Sapne Vs Everyone’ continues to strike a chord with audiences across the country, Ambrish Verma’s journey feels just as powerful as the stories he puts on screen. From quietly doing theatre on weekends while working corporate jobs to becoming one of the most talked about creators on the internet right now, his story is proof that sometimes the most unconventional dreams are the ones worth taking the biggest risks for.
