Part 9
Asad grabbed her and carried her back to the building. Law enforcement officers moved into high alert again. Zoya's white, pinched face said she was in pain, but the fact that she was conscious encouraged him.
He carried her into the office and laid her down on the couch. The fact that she didn't try to get up again worried him. "Let me see that shoulder."
"It's okay." She trembled. The tight lines around her mouth revealed she wasn't being completely truthful.
Asad pushed her sleeve up and probed at the wound. She gasped. "Sorry."
"No problem." She spoke the words through gritted teeth. "I think I'm going to be sick."
Asad snagged the small trashcan from the side of the desk and handed it to her.
Outside the office, Ayaann spoke into his cell phone, then said to Asad, "Adil's trapped in the building across the street." Ayaan dragged a hand through his already mussed hair. "He's asking for Zoya."
Zoya sat up fast, wincing, but determined. "Now, Zo"" Trevor snapped his mouth shut at her glare. She shoved the trashcan back at him.
She turned to Ayaan. "I want to talk to him."
"He just tried to kill you," Asad snapped.
"But he didn't succeed." She pursed her lips and stared at Ayaan.
Ayaan sighed. "We've got a hostage negotiator on the scene."
Zoya got to her feet and hovered, ready to catch her when she fell over. She swayed, but kept her feet. He had to admit, he admired her grit.
Ayaan nodded to her arm. "How bad is it?"
"It's fine," she insisted.
Asad appreciated that Ayaan waited for his input. "It's a graze. With a little time and some antibiotics, she'll be fine."
"Give me the phone." Zoya held out her hand. "Please."

Zoya pressed the phone to her ear. "Adil?"
"Tell them to go away, Zoya. I can't go to jail."
"Why'd you try to shoot me?"
"I didn't. I was aiming for your boyfriend."
She glanced at Asad and he lifted a brow. Ayaan was typing something into his phone. He held it up for her to read.Ask him what he wants.
"What do you want, Adil? I know you'd like them to go away and leave you alone, but they're not going to do that. Not as long as you have Arhaan."
"I wasn't going to let them sell him," he said, his voice cracking. "I was just trying to buy some time."
Ayaan held his phone out for her to read once again.Appease him. Appeal to his good side, if he has one.She ignored the throbbing in her arm and said, "Don't worry about that now. What about Aliya? She's going crazy with worry. Don't do this to her."

"I'm trapped. I can't think!"
Jen walked to the door on shaky legs. Somehow she had to get him to hand Arhaan over. "I'm coming to see you. I'll help you think." She swallowed hard. "You've always been there for me, Adil, let me do the same for you."
"You're trying to trick me, aren't you?"
"No! I'm not! You're my cousin and I love you. Let me help you."
A long pause. Zoya held her tongue and let him consider. Ayaan was encouraging her to talk. She held a finger to her lips. She knew her cousin.
Adil finally blew out a sigh. "You'll help me? You promise?"
"I promise. Just don't hurt Arhaan."
"I don't want to hurt him, Zoe, I'm just trapped." His voice wobbled and Zoya bit her lip against the sting of tears.
"Okay, then. I'm coming to get him. Asad is going to walk over with me. You can't shoot, you understand?"
"I won't, but Asad has to stay down there. He can't come with you." His voice hardened. "If he comes up or anyone tries anything that I don't like, I'll just kill Arhaan and myself. You got it?"
Nausea grabbed at her gut, but she kept the phone pressed against her ear as she ignored Asad and Ayaan . They shook their heads and even tried to block her way. She walked around them. Asad finally grabbed her arm and she bit back a cry of pain. He let go as if he'd been singed.
"Sorry," he whispered. "But it's too dangerous."
She narrowed her eyes and stopped at the door that would lead her into the building where her cousin held her baby nephew hostage. She heard the baby cry and Adil curse. He hung up on her and dread centered itself in the pit of her stomach. She realized two things, and she wasn't sure which one scared her more.
She believed Adil really would kill Arhaan and himself before he went to jail.
And she was the only one who could stop him

Asad walked with Zoya into the building, nerves tense, expectant. A SWAT team member met them at the door. "I'm Vivian. I'm going to be with you all the way."
"Where is he?" Zoya asked.
"Upstairs on the third floor." Vivian led them to the stairs.
"What made him come in here?" Asad asked as they began the ascent.
"We were already on the scene when he came flying out of the warehouse door. We called for him to stop, but he ignored us. He was obviously carrying a baby so we let him go. We've been trying to talk him down ever since. Didn't know he had a weapon on him until he fired on you." He glanced at Zoya's wounded arm.
She shook her head and took a steadying breath.
"What's your pain level?" Asad asked.
"It's ebbed to a dull, nauseating throb. I can deal with it. What I can't deal with is the possibility Adil will hurt Arhaan."
"Then let's do what we can to make sure that doesn't happen," Vivian said.
Asad took Zoya's hand in his but she pulled away, her eyes straight ahead and fixed on Vivian's back as he led the way.
At the top Vivian motioned them onto the landing. "He's in there. It used to be an apartment. We've got the blueprints." He pulled the plans up on his phone and rotated the screen so she could see it. Asad hovered over her shoulder, watching. Vivian pointed. "He's at that window. We get movement every once in a while."
A baby's distressed cry reached their ears and Zoya visibly tensed. Asad placed a hand on her shoulder, and again, she moved away from him. He lifted a brow in silent question. With a narrow-eyed look she said, "Not now."
He backed off, hurt.
"Okay, let me talk to him."
Vivian dialed the number and handed her the phone.
Adils voice came over the speaker. "What?" he snapped. "I know you're out there listening. Can't you tell I'm a little busy with a baby right now?"
"It's me, cuz." Asad almost smiled as she used the nickname she'd told him she'd had for Adil since she could talk. "May I come in and help?"
Asad frowned. No way was she going in there.
"No," Adil said. "I changed my mind. There's no way I'm going to get out of here if I give you the only hostage I have."
"Adil, please. I'm the only one here who loves you and doesn't want anything bad to happen to you. Please. Give me a chance to help you."
For a moment all they heard was his heavy breathing and Arhaan's crying.
"Fine," he said, sounding desperate. "Fine. Get in here and help me figure this out."
The baby,Vivian mouthed.Get him to give up the baby.
"Will you let them have Arhaan?" She paused. "Will you make a trade? Me for him?"
Asad shook his head and Vivian frowned at her.
She frowned back and said to Adil, "You can't do anything with a baby. He'll only be a nuisance, keep you from getting away. Think about it."
For one long minute, Adil didn't say anything. Then, "When you're inside, you can pass them the baby."
