Karan Wahi and Surbhi Jyoti are BACK in Seven And A Half Dates, where Shaalien and Suyyash turn directors

Seven and a Half Dates is a full musical web series where the story moves through original songs the way a conversation moves through silences.

Bollywood has done rom-coms to death. It has done reality shows, drama series, crime thrillers, and every variation of the will-they-won't-they formula imaginable. What it has never done, at least not like this, is a full musical web series where the story moves through original songs the way a conversation moves through silences.

That changes on May 24. Seven and a Half Dates, India's first musical web series, drops on the Novice Records YouTube channel with 8 episodes, 8 original compositions, and two leads who have known their director for nearly two decades.

What the Show Actually Is

Two people who should never have matched get matched anyway. The date is awkward. Something real starts forming underneath the awkwardness. Then fear steps in, timing goes sideways, silence does what silence always does, and the whole thing becomes exactly the kind of love story that hurts to watch because it feels too familiar.

Karan Wahi and Surbhi Jyoti play the leads. The series is directed by Shaalien Malhotra and Suyyash Rai, presented by Novice Records, and produced under Luck Films.

The Guy Who Wrote It Is Not Who You'd Expect

Shaalien Malhotra has spent over a decade in front of the camera. This is his writing, directing, and producing debut, all three at once, and the subject he chose was romance. Not action, not suspense, not something safer.

"After spending over a decade as an actor, I've always been someone who wanted to keep learning and exploring beyond just performing," he said. "Contrary to what many would expect, I'm actually a hardcore romantic at heart and wanted to tell a story that feels real and relatable."

The idea came together after Suyyash Rai, his closest friend of 17 years, asked if he had a story. He did. Everything moved quickly from there.

"One of the highlights for me was directing Karan, whom I've known for almost 20 years, even before I moved to Mumbai, along with my friend Surbhi, with whom I've shared a long association over the years," Shaalien said. "More than friends, they truly brought the characters to life and elevated them beyond what I had imagined."

Suyyash Rai Became a Director by Accident

Suyyash Rai arrived in Mumbai at 20 with, as he puts it himself, hundreds of dreams and no plan. Directing was never the goal. Storytelling became the goal later, once he figured out that the only stories worth telling were the ones he could tell his own way.

"Becoming a director was never planned, but storytelling became my passion because I wanted to tell stories my way, through emotions, visuals, and music, which has always been such a huge part of who I am," he said. "That's how Seven and a Half Dates, a musical by Shaalien and me, came to life."

He was direct about where the credit sits. "Full credit to Shaalien for writing something so real, and to Karan and Surbhi for bringing it alive with so much honesty. We've made this series with a lot of love, and we hope audiences feel that too."

Why the Musical Format Is the Whole Point

Eight episodes, eight original songs. This is not a show with a background score and a title track bolted on for promotional purposes. The music is structural. It carries the story the way dialogue does in everything else, which means the compositions have to work as songs and as plot at the same time.

That is a genuinely difficult thing to pull off, and it is the reason the format has never been attempted at this scale in Indian digital content before. Whether it lands will depend entirely on how well the writing and the music hold each other up across all eight episodes.

Karan Wahi and Surbhi Jyoti in a musical love story about two wrong people finding something real. May 24, YouTube, Novice Records. The bar is set interestingly high.

TL;DR

Karan Wahi and Surbhi Jyoti have a new project, Seven and a Half Dates is India's first musical web series. 8 episodes, 8 original songs, one love story about two wrong people who matched by mistake. It is free. It is on YouTube. It drops May 24. The director? A decade-long actor making his debut who describes himself as "a hardcore romantic at heart.
