As far as I know , when ram , laxman , bharat and shatrughan were in the vasishta ashram they were just like sages or say bhikshuk
they were not allowed royal meals unless and until they would finish their education
but today in SKR
they show that the four prince were having royal meal in between
was it allowed ?
