Chapter 9-B

Finding The Way Out...

Kalpana tried finding some way out or knowing if there are any petrol pump only to be disappointed by finding none of them. Nor was there any sight of any other car or help which could aid them to reach the place. Ultimately giving up any hope of getting a direct ride or left after half n hour Kalpana went back to the car, were Raghav was just sitting there surfing some things on his phone, which had low network. Kalpana came there, and knocked on his window, making him roll it down, "Sir, there is no other way out for now, You will have to take your belonging and start walking as much as we can till we find something else to do," Kalpana's suggestion traumatized Raghav, "WALK??" Raghav repeated, while Kalpana looked on lost at his reaction, "You gotta be kidding me, are you saying we have to walk till the Mahim beach area from here???" Raghav asked. Kalpana rolled her eyes and denied the idea, "Sir, we cannot walk till there, it's beyond human capacity, unless Indian people who has decided to walk for purpose of religion pilgrimage. We have to somehow manage to leave this area and find some way to go across it and find some vehicle to help us reach there. Raghav when completely assured of no other way out agreed to walk for a while... He picked up his bag which had his file and laptop, however while taking it out, his pendrive fell from his bag onto the car seat, without him actually realizing it. Both of them started their journey now walking... "Sir, it is just that it's only 5.00 right now and mostly no one is out at this hour, we are only owls on the street," Kalpana spoke as she looked at him, indicating him as one of those fool. Raghav just controlled his anger for now... After walking for barely 20 minutes, Raghav was tired... As Kalpana saw him huffing... "Sir, that's it?? How do you do work out at gym??? If you cannot even walk couple of kilometres... Had I been walking this much I might have actually crossed half of the road..." Kalpana taunted... Making Raghav get up again on his feet, "Look Ms. Jadhav... I do not go to gym carrying my suit and laptop nor with these office kinds shoes... I really have no clue how could I be looking by the time we reach office, maybe I will be smelling like a pig by them..." he scolded... Making Kalpana laugh out loud... Her laugh only added irritation on Raghav, it was during this scene that Kalpana spotted buffalo carriage... i.e. "Bail Gaadi". She pointed same to Raghav, "Look," she said point in the direction, Raghav looked and was puzzled while he tried to understand what does it exactly mean? "We can ask that Bhaiya to drop us at some bus stand or place from where we can get carriage to help us reach the place. "Another Joke?" he asked. "NO! Look, you are already tired, and these people are really kind ... So much that they won't make you take longer and false route and help us out..." Without waiting for any other response she simple ordered, COME!" and started walking in the direction. "Bhai... Listen, we need to reach the nearest taxi/rickshaw/bus stand as soon as possible... Can you help us out?" she asked calmly (of course she spoke in hindi).

The rider was old farmer who readily agreed to help duo. "Beta, there is a rickshaw and cycle stand across the lake which is about 10 minutes from here. You can cross the lake via "Naav" and it then walk for 5 minutes to reach the stand," he explained. Raghav was confused, "What's naav?" Kalpana looked at him, "Well sir, sadly helicopter and aeroplane would be too expensive to cross the lake ... Um... small one... so I assume meaning of Naav is boat?" she clarified in a way to wake the Raghav up from asking any further silly questions.

With help of the farmer both of them got into the carriage. While Kalpana enjoyed slow shaky ride with added sugar of Raghav's frustrated face, as the shakiness of carriage due to rough roads was making him uncomfortable with constant jerks. Suddenly Kalpana's eyes fell on part of the sun... that is rising Sun... which made her really happy, darkness had already vanished from sky long back, and now it was almost 6.00 about the time when Sun would rise anytime. She was fond of seeing sun rises, but due to hard schedule of her daily life and location facing of her home, it was becoming difficult for her to do so... She just looked on across the farm towards east... Raghav too looked where her attention was and was equally mesmerized by beauty of the farm they were travelling through and birds flying across... Hardly ever in fast paced city do they get time to be in natural surroundings. Before they could realize, Bullock cart halted and they were near the lake they were to cross. Old farmer called up some teenager and told him to ride the "couple" across the lake, which lead them to widen their eyes... "Ummm... Kaka..." Kalpana called out, but before she can say anything, old farmer continued, "wait..." he again turned to young man, "Please guide them towards the rickshaw and cycle stand and help them reach Mahim beach near Palghar." Man nodded but he added, "Kaka rickshaws are on strike... today... for they want hike in payment," he informed... Which shocked both Raghav and Kalpana... "Can you both ride bicycles?" he enquired, but considering Raghav's need to reach Palghar soon, and not wishing to make his look and things messy... for his meeting, both of them denied, but old farmer had solution, he suggested to young man, "Woh Mayank Bhau ke truck mein ghussa dena dono ko... OoO waise bhi Dahanu tak toh jaa hi rahe hai, chod denge dono ko..!" (Push them into truck of Mayank bro, he has to reach Dahanu ... he can drop them...) ...

Young man agreed and invited both of them in the small rowing boat. Young man helped Raghav and told him, "Ab you help your wife..." feeling shy... Raghav rolled his eyes, as he held Kalpana's hand while balancing himself to get into boat... As Kalpana got into the boat, it shook, a little making them both hold onto each other tightly, while Kalpana closed her eyes balancing holding upper arm of Raghav, he too held her protectively from her upper hand, as they both held each other and settled down in the boat. Young man started rowing the boat across the lake with Sun Rising up in background in it's golden rays... Yes the whole scene was mesmerizing which brought about smile on face of both Raghav and Kalpana as they started enjoying their boat journey. Young man said, "You know today Sun was expected rise after 5 minutes but... Mannu chacha's prediction went wrong... ..." with grin on the face... "He predicts the sun rise time?" Raghav asked man curiously. "Yes, of course... Why do you ask that?" he was confused, considering this to be common routine among themselves. Kalpana laughed as she looked at Raghav, "Here sir there is always one person mostly in every village who is time expert or say has great knowledge in these aspects of geography to predict time and have mastery over it too..." Raghav was indeed impressed, "Then why don't these people use it effectively and apply it to some scientific purpose...?" Inquired Raghav. Kalpana smiled, "Well for everyone not everything is for profit and benefits, these are often out of interest and their hobby... They have their own other set of important things in life... and...," before she can complete, "And for most of the people in India it's emotions and family which hinders progress of every other human being!" he completed his own thoughts to her statement, which didn't really make Kalpana happy but agreed with smile... "Different people, different culture and different priorities..." she said. Raghav smiled in agreement. Soon they reached the other side of the lake and young man guided him till Mayank. He was all set to go leave and they reached on nick of time, Mayank introduced his wife Nirali to them and both greeted each other. Raghav provided him with the address and Mayank assured them he will drop them till the office. Raghav refused for the same, "Umm... just drop me 10 minutes away I will manage..." he said... and Kalpana and Mayank understood his hesitance... "Ok Ji... No Problem." He said with smile, "He joined them till the back and opened the back gate... While Nirali settled next to driver seat in front looking in the back from small window.

Raghav got into the truck first which was actually filled with hay. After settling down a bit, he forwarded his hand two Kalpana. Kalpana placed her hand in his and climbed the step as he pulled her up, making herself fall on him as he fell back. Both look into each other for couple of seconds with Raghav's hand holding her around her waist and her hand resting on his chest... Mayank who went on to pull up the small door saw them and blushed a little seeing the intensity with which both looked lost into each other and then looked at Nirali who was in also viewing the deep eyelock from front window,

Nirali with broad smile: "Aap logo ki shaadi ko kitne saal hue hai?" (How long have you guys been married?)

Her voice brought Raghav and Kalpana back to reality, Kalpana pushed herself back feeling embarrassed as she got up and settled on the other end of the truck.

Raghav smiled seeing her discomfort, "Well 2 years...!!" he bluffed making Kalpana widen her eyes... "He is joking Niraliji, we are not couple... I am just the driver of taxi which he has rented...!" She said sternly... Making Raghav's face fall a little... "Ohhh..!! I am sorry, woh we thought that maybe you guys were..."

"That's Ok.." Raghav replied not wishing to continue any further conversation as their journey continued in the truck. Within few seconds of journey's Kalpana dozed off, after being thoroughly exhausted from night's ups and downs as her head tilted a little, and Raghav felt uncomfortable seeing her falling off on one side, "this might strain her neck," he thought. He quickly got up from his place and sat next to Kalpana calmly, holding her head as in her sleep Kalpana wrapped her arms around Raghav and rested her head on his chest in a position that she hugged him around. Raghav could feel nothing but joy having her so close to him. A smile appeared on his face and he placed a small peck of kiss on her forehead as he partially lost his senses. He wrapped his arm around her and soon dozed off to sleep while travelling in the truck. It was after 2 hours of good sleep did Kalpana's eyes fluttered open as she realized herself in Raghav's arm, in cosiest position, she tried pulling herself up, as in his sleep he held her tighter at her attempts to free herself, she whispered in broken sound... "Sii... Sir... Sir...?" Waking him up... he slowly opened his eyes and looked down to see her almond shaped eyes looking right at him... As they both looked into each other once again losing touch with the real world for couple of minutes till truck applied breaks... Raghav loosened his grasp on her and she got back to herself as her eyes looked here and there, everywhere except for at Raghav, "I am sorry... Actually, you might have strained your neck if you had continued sleeping in that strange position," he told her. Kalpana just nodded in agreement understanding his words as both of them sat away from each other maintaining some distance.

Soon they had reached their destiny. Kalpana and Raghav got down, it was 8.30 a.m. Raghav took a leave informing Kalpana, "Listen, I will be here till 3.00 around and I have meeting again as video conference with a client at around 9.30 and I prefer to reach there by 9.00 p.m., hope these 6 hours would be ok for you to get things settled?" Kalpana looked at him with uncertainty, "Sir, it will take about 2-3 hours for me to travel till car carrying Petrol from here... I will still try my best..." she said.. and Raghav nodded as they both parted ways. Raghav on reaching the place of meeting had decided to brush himself up and get refreshed in a nearby lodge, before first meeting at 10.15 and then will have food before budget discussion at 12.30 around.

Chapter 10

Struggles and Success

As Raghav left for meeting, Kalpana walked around to look for petrol pump. Finding nearest to the place where they were, she gathering more information about pumps and travelling ways around. "Mostly buses won't allow you to carry any of such things dear, and rickshaws are on strike, will you be able to handle carry the huge cans filled with diesel on cycle?" asked the man at petrol pump. Kalpana looked at the cycle, and then wondered about the decisions, this could be one of the major drawback of being female, but finding no other option she had to agree, and she would have to travel it that way and get her car filled on time. "Ok then, you can catch the bus from that stop, it will drop you at Sipla town (imaginary, not referring to maps for now...) and ... There is town's petrol pump... Beta I am telling you about it even if it is not of our company, but for your own best way..." he said with smile. Kalpana nodded and following the instructions she got into the bus... and got down at the station she approached the petrol pump and got the cans filled up... She rented the cycle... "This will be toughest thing for now... but Bappa..." she prayed looking slightly up, "Bappa please be by my side and give me courage to take on all this and get through everything." She got the cans hanged up on the cycle... And seeing her meek build, old man at pump felt bad, "If I had someone to help you around whom I can trust I would have tried helping you out," he said... Kalpana said it's ok and settled on the bicycle... "It would be one hour my child, take care, and please keep me updated..." Kalpana nodded with smile.

As she rolled on the pedal for first 10 minutes it was ok, and her legs had started giving her pains as she halted for couple of minutes catching her breath... "Kalpana faster ... Otherwise in this speed you won't be able to catch up with Raghav sir at all," Kalpana thought as she looked into her watch which showed almost 10.30. She speeded up while travelling... And she kept on peddling letting all the sweat roll down her face right from forehead till her chin... She was all wet, but she didn't stop... She was all determined to get things done as soon as possible... Not giving up on her struggle... all the while she kept on praying to Bappa to give her all the strength... As she crossed Hanuman Mandir, she could see the idol of Hanuman and it's painting which portrayed Hanuman carrying mountain and his heavy tool in other, she looked at her cycle and cans of filled diesel, as she closed her eyes, regaining all her strengths as much as possible... She had tears rolling down her eyes, with all the pain that had made her give up on peddling and walked holding her cycle... With whatever speed, soon it was 11.15 when she finally reached the place and rested for couple of minute putting her head down on the bonnet and let herself breathe and catch up. As Kalpana opened her the front seat of the car she noticed the pen drive of Raghav... "Oh my gosh... I think this was where he must have saved the budget slides he was to discuss with manager? He will surely need it..." Kalpana quickly opened her purse to remove her cell phone and dialled Raghav's number...

Raghav was just walking within the corridor, as he took out the phone seeing the name Kalpana flashing on the screen he immediately picked it up, "Yes, Kalpi...?" Kalpana answered, without wasting a second, "Sir, your pendrive is in the car, it must have fell off..." Said Kalpana in one breath... Raghav stopped... he quickly checked his bags, and was shocked to know... "Kalpana," he answered the phone, while Kalpana's ears glued to her phone, "Kalpana, I need so many important files from there, where are you and how much time will it take?" he asked panicked... "Sir, I am still here,... But... But... if I get network, maybe I can email you the files..." she said, as she reached to her laptop. Raghav heaved a sigh of relief for couple seconds wishing, she should have network... Yet, he started ordering already "Look there will be a file named..." but was cut, "Sir... Wait, let me start my laptop and check the network..." She said... "Kalpana please make it quick... I have to show my presentation...!!!" Kalpana was doing moving her fingers over mouse pad of laptop, as she inserted her data cable in USB... "Kalpana are you there?" Raghav asked impatiently... "Sir, I am here..." She spoke as she removed the cable and reinserted wishing atleast this time... it should be able to connect... "Sir... I am not getting any network..."

Raghav told her to move to some different area and then try reconnecting it... Kalpana agreed as she walked around with laptop in her hand, trying to get connected to network somewhere...

It was after walking for some 20 minutes that Kalpana ended up near some dabhaa which had computer operating system... A smile of relief beamed on her face as she walked towards dabhaa... Requesting owner to let her use computer and network and she would be ready to pay them the amount, but refused to let her use pen drive, "Sorry Ji, but we have our bills and other data, a single virus can affect us a lot..." owner requested assuring she can use network for free... Without any wi-fi facility... On the other hand Raghav was completely disappointed and losing his patience ... As he cursed the owner... Not understanding, how to get the files, nor could Kalpana go to his office and give him the pendrive... He was feeling helpless and felt like he has lost the deal... till he heard next lines, via phone, "Ok, done..." Kalpana said... Her words confused Raghav, as she got back on call once again, "Sir, I have opened your pendrive, tell me what am I suppose to send?" Raghav's face beamed with joy... As he listed down all the files, and Kalpana selected them collecting them in her laptop... "Sir, I have got these files, I will zip them and send you now..." she suggested, Raghav nodded... Within 5 minutes files had reached Raghav and he downloaded them... "Thanks Kalpana, I have got them, I am heading to meeting, see you at 3.00..." he reminded and cut the call... Kalpana smiled ... More than being happy about being able to help Raghav, she was proud of herself... She could use and apply whatever she had learned in her college was finally being used wisely, and her education and dad's investment wasn't a waste... She disconnected the correct wire from her laptop and fixed it in the computer of Dabhhaa... and confirmed it's operation. She thanked kind people for helping her before she started walking back... feeling happy and satisfied with her own achievement... naa dual achievement... one was getting the diesel and now this one... It was almost 12.30 and she was really hungry, she thought of treating herself and paying the kind the people indirectly by buying their food would be perfect match, as she settled down in the restaurant... and started having her lunch...

Chapter 11

Disappointments and Misunderstandings- Final Stroke

It was almost 12.30 and she was really hungry, she thought of treating herself and paying the kind the people indirectly by buying their food would be perfect match, as she settled down in the restaurant... and started having her lunch... Feeling satiety she headed back to the car... She filled up the car with diesel and added the cycle on top of the car... She was indeed lucky that none of it was stolen in her absence ... she chuckled at the thought... It was almost 2.00 as she started her car and headed towards the Sipla and dropped the cycle... Man was glad she was fine and happy...

Kalpana was somehow feeling strong pain in her back and leg ... but she ignored it with the aim of driving as fast as she could. It was for sure not possible for her to reach the place by targeted time, but she would travel as fast as she can and get there... It was only in the mid journey had she received the call from ... She went to her purse and seeing the name "Dada" on the screen, her happiness knew no bound, she took her car to side and halted as she received the call happily, "Dada!!! I hope you have packed your bags and are all set for your visit to see baba soon...!!" she exclaimed happily... But next sentence from the phone wiped off any happiness she had felt just 2 minutes back on seeing his call... and tears formed in her eyes feeling of hurt took over... "How can You Dada??" she questioned as some of water droplets rolled down... "Dada, he is your father too... And he is craving to meet you...!!! I am feeling disgusted to tell you ... You are most selfish person I have ever seen..!!" she screamed crying... "Yes, dada, only you and bhabhi has some work, we all people here are jobless and have nothing else to worry about... Wish just sending money would always be enough..." she objected at any reasons she was thrown with... "Do you realize it's been 6 years... 6 hell years since you have met them... and virtually as well you have just been around once in a week...!!"... she paused... "But you know what dada!!! All the best, I can never imagine, if Kittu ever does that to you... When he grows up and leaves for good for his own self-centric reasons, you won't be able to survive... cuz... you have no daughters to take up your burden..!!! Nor would bhabhi be able to do anything... You might be all alone... But don't worry, he will be richer than you to send you money almost every week... but busier to not even meet you virtually..." She finished... cutting the call... and cursing herself for blurting out bitter prayers for his own brother... She leaned her head down on the steering as she let herself cry... and cry enough to break down... For few minutes, "No Kalpana... You have to be strong and up..!! for no one but your baba, now he will need you and has only you...!! His own hopes will be broken... Soon...!!!" Kalpana thought as she restarted her car... Giving pause to the time running out of her hand...

On the other hand... Raghav's meeting got delayed, from 3.00 to 3.30 and he was expecting Kalpana to be there already... With already delayed meeting and her not reaching there, made his pulse raise out of control as the range in him started building with delay in every minute, his mind as diverted with ring on phone, flashing the name Sapna... Sapna was assistant manager ... that is assistant to the person who was at highest post below him in his New York Branch...

Sapna: "Sir, I would like to take a leave... for three weeks...!" Came the request from other side...

Raghav: "And we had discussed this earlier too... That You are not granted any leave for any so called family problems!" went the reply with equal urgency...

Sapna: "Then I would like to quit the job, I have to leave for India day after tomorrow, as my father-in-law is unwell, and I cannot back off from my part at this point..!!!" came the stern reply shocking Raghav...

Raghav: (got up angrily from his seat...): "So if that is your final decision, what is the point for even calling, REMEMBER once you leave it you will never be welcomed back!!"

Sapna: "Sure sir, thank you... it was pleasant working with Singhaniyas..." Came the quick reply.

Raghav: "And you need to serve your notice period..."

Sapna: "I cannot help it sir, I cannot be available from tomorrow... till 2 months as planned earlier, but I guess ... maybe for good now...!!"

Raghav: "You won't be provided letter of appreciations Mrs. Jadhav... Just think and decide... Just one letter of experience..."

Sapna: "That would be enough sir, Thank You..."

"Beep Beep Beep beep"

She had cut the call... "How dare these employees...!!! We have done so much for them, and how do they behave in return..." Raghav thought angrily... So what if she had asked for leaves and breaks for so many times and has been asking, she should have realized the position at which she is working has huge responsibilities... He said, banging his hand on the table...!!

It was almost 4.30 and there was no sign of Kalpana added to his frustration, and that's exactly when he saw the taxi entering the premise of the head office... "So this was your own way of revenging?" he lashed out, moment Kalpana stepped down from her car... Shocking her totally... Already hurt by her brother's behaviour and guilty about cursing him and bitter prayers, was not enough to be added with another blame... She looked on at him, as he continued, "Yes, so now you have planned to delay my reach to hotel so I cannot attend my video conference on time...? Am I right Ms. Jadhav??" he spoke... As Kalpana just continued hearing his resentful accusations, holding back all the remorse she had carried along all day... As Raghav continued his outrage, "You all Jadhavs are filled with the same cheap mentality, of disloyalty and ungratefulness," he shouted more...!!! As Kalpana's heart just sank in more to bear more and more of these hurtful words to build a shield around herself... And make herself stronger... After completely draining out his anger for delay in meeting, Sapna's resignation and delay in her arrival, he looked at her, as she looked back at him, both of them throwing daggers... "Ok, can we settle down now or you have more to say?" Kalpana asked... Raghav angrily got back in the seat behind the driver's seat... As Kalpana started her car, "We need to first halt at Vasai," Raghav ordered, "and then continue to hotel..." Saying so he wrote down the address on piece of paper and threw it in front to her...

She looked at it fallen, and stopped the car to pick it up and read... "Ok sir" was the only reply she gave.

Raghav looked at her angrily... as he closed his eyes and kept his head to relax in upper position resting on the seat... It was after some time when his anger had cooled down, and he looked around to find himself still travelling, "Where have we reached?" he asked holding his head down which was really heavy. "Virar," came the cold reply from driver... Raghav looked at her, "And how much more time will we be taking to reach the place?" Kalpana's eyes still focused on the road, "30 minutes for your relative's place and Three and Half hours for hotel!" came again the reply from Kalpana... Her word to word talk and short replies was not something going well with Raghav, but he decided to ignore it, as she would be back to her normal mode soon. After dropping the parcel, Raghav settled back in the car in front seat next to Kalpana... Who was now completely focused on driving... With no other expression on her face... Raghav looked at other side, i.e. outside the window.

Almost 2 hours had passed by, and they would be near hotel soon... It was almost 8.45, and she hadn't spoken a word... making Raghav completely restless, just to break the ice he wanted to say something, that something was "I need a break, halt it at best place around..." Silence was he got except for a nod from her. Kalpana drove in near best restaurant, completely posh and expensive place, "Ohhh Nice..." Raghav said, "Finally something good and healthy to eat..." he said... in a tone of taunt... But still her expressions were plastered same ... "EXPRESSIONLESS" ... Raghav got down and looked back at her... She just pulled back her driver seat in resting position... And he headed inside to restaurant... He was sitting there waiting for his order while his inner side was still unsatisfied... On the other hand, Kalpana's phone rang, she saw screen and cuts the call, as fresh tears of dull reality rolled down... It rings again... and she ignores, then she sees messenger messages, she takes the phone and puts her net pack off... Few minutes later messages are being received, she finally switches off the phone and puts her head down crying her out... She sobs, till no end... She is hurt, she is upset, but she is for first time, helpless, she wants to run to arms of her loved ones... As soon as possible... She cannot take it... But she wipes off her tears again, "Just few more hours Kalpana, you will reach home to your Aai-Baba..." She told herself... and consoled herself... Raghav came back, feeling heavy, he settled down in the car and looked at Kalpana, she appeared different, in whatever light was available he had easily made out, her eyes were red and puffed, she seemed to have cried, but this time he didn't have that courage to even ask her for reasons, all he felt he could do is sit there silently... Sooner he played the song in front radio with the thought of helping things go smoother, but that as well failed miserably, as Kalpana had no intention of speaking even a word or giving him any cue... Raghav had no intention of apologizing her considering it was STILL her fault to be late, that too by 2 hours, and decided to just dozz off, till things are fine...

Soon they had reached the place, and Kalpana halted the taxi, "Sir we are here," is all she said facing straight, waking Raghav up... Raghav collected his stuff and got down from the car, and stood there still, as Kalpana without even looking at him drove off... Leaving him stand there like statue...!! Left him wondering her behaviour towards him? "Chuck, just two days, day after tomorrow, we finally move back..." He thought trying to ignore her behaviour... But it was difficult... For him to forget her now... As he recalled events of the whole trip... In car, walking around, getting into bullock cart and then boat ride, them sleeping in the truck hugging each other, a smile appeared on his face, as he turned back to leave... But disappears soon, as he remembers her behaviour while returning.

He enters his room, only to be greeted by Sammy, who informed that meeting went great, and Raghav gave a small "Formality" smile... A smile with no real happiness, as his mind was just lingering elsewhere...
