Kashmira Pardeshi plays Bharti in Netflix's Glory, a character who is manipulative, flawed, and several steps ahead of everyone around her. In this exclusive conversation with India Forums, Kashmira Pardeshi talks about what it actually took to get there when she was told about one of our favorite scenes of hers from the show.
Q: My favourite scene in the show is the police station scene. There is this hint, the moment one of the characters exits and goes out the door, you were being bichari for just one millisecond, and in the very next frame you turn into the complete badass that she has to be with Divyenndu's character. These nuances are what make a character. How easy or difficult does it become to play with them? I'm sure you get a lot of direction but sometimes it's your own interpretation too, so how is it for you?
So far I have done the girl who gets saved, like a damsel in distress. And now people need saving from this character. That shift, actually, the police station scenes are my favourite too, because that is where I got to show both paths
- Kashmira Pardeshi (as told to India Forums)
Kashmira: So, see, this character itself was not a regular character. She was tricky, she was flawed, and she had a reason for everything. When I was exploring her, I realised it was going to be hard to relate to this character, because obviously I have not done anything that she has done. But once you start playing her, there is always a reason for why you do anything. You just have to find the most relatable reason to do something that you probably would have, at some point in your life, wanted to. You always have these two people in your mind, the good and the bad, and obviously you silence the bad one, but it still exists. So it was difficult, yeah, to tap into Bharti, to be honest.
She continued, "So far I have done the girl who gets saved, like a damsel in distress. And now people need saving from this character. That shift, actually, the police station scenes are my favourite too, because that is where I got to show both paths. Like, I am bad, but I am pretending to be this bechari also. So far it was either or, so it was cool to do that."
She further added, "Also, with Divyenndu in the scene, you have seen him do such great things and make such a great impact on the audience. And then suddenly you are there and it is a takkar wala scene. He actually helped me quite a bit there, because that was one of my first scenes with him, and there is nothing else I have with him, right? It starts from the whole confrontation and it is just a couple of scenes. These are all FTII actors, so when you have to go and suddenly do this, it is exciting but you are also nervous. It was fun though. I had to channelise too many layers to her, so that was nice."
You can read our review of Glory here. An excerpt from the same reads, "Glory is not a perfect show, and it never pretends to be one. It is messy, ambitious and often chaotic, but it is also bold, engaging and difficult to ignore. It may not land every punch cleanly, but it throws enough of them with conviction to leave an impact. In its own unpredictable way, it manages to win you over, even as it tests your patience."
