CHAPTER 9

As soon as the thought crossed his mind the world began to sway in front of his eyes. He stumbled and fell in his chair. But how is this possible? How can Bella be pregnant?' As soon as his mind raised this question, the night spent at the Lonavala farmhouse flashed in his mind. Him warming up Bella, semi-naked Bella in his arms... Every single detail began to flash before his eyes faster and faster till he couldn't take it anymore. Oh God! What have I done?' he thought. How could I do this to my Bella?' But my intentions were not wrong' said a voice within him. How does it matter?' said another voice accusingly. You have ruined her life completely' continued the same voice.

He felt as though his head will split into a thousand pieces. He wanted to block out all the images that were flashing before his eye but he couldn't. How in the world am I going to face Bella? How will I face Sumi ma, Amma, Appa, Rehan Kuhu?' Just then Bella knocked on his cabin's door.

B: Mahir what are you doing here? Come out, Mr. Johnson is here.

Saying this Bella went out. He was cursing himself from within. He felt like going away from there and never returning. Bella will definitely hate me now. Everyone will hate me now. What is point of staying here and increasing her distress?' he thought. What's the point?' said the same accusing voice. So now you will run away from here and leave Bella to face the taunts of the society? You will leave her to face the society for getting pregnant out of wedlock? You will leave her to bear the burden of the mistake which you have committed? COWARD!'

No' he thought, I am not a coward. I will face everyone, bear their hatred. I deserve this. I have already made Bella lose her dignity and self respect, but if I leave now, Bella will lose all of her dreams as well. I can't do that to her.'

So he walked out of his cabin and approached Bella. She was waiting for him. He couldn't bring himself to look at her. Instead he looked at Mr. Johnson and his secretary Ellie and greeted them. Since it was their joint project, they both made the presentation. At one point went and sat down and Bella continued with the presentation. He saw that she was standing tall, all signs of fatigue and discomfort well hidden. Only he could see the flash of pain in her eyes when she turned too quickly. Her back must be troubling her a lot' he thought.

As her presentation ended she was looking extremely proud of herself and their team. She proudly introduced their whole team. Mahir was feeling very guilty because he had snatched away her right to be proud. To stand tall and face the world. Once the news of her pregnancy got out, the world would never let her stand tall and proud. She would always be shamed and ridiculed for getting pregnant before marriage. Just like Sumi ma. Despite being so successful, Sumi ma had to bear the taunts of neighbourhood aunties because her husband had left her for another woman. Today your father will be so proud of you' thought Mahir bitterly. You have finally proved that you are after all your father's son.'

Bella's face full of innocent trust when she told him he could never do what his father did flashed before his eyes. Pain flashed through his heart, pain so acute that he thought he would drop dead at that moment. He flinched. Bella noticed that and steadied him.

B: Hey are you okay?

M: Yes.

B: Mahir we did it.

M: Yes.

Just then Mr. Johnson came up to them and congratulated them and their team for the fabulous presentation.

Johnson: I was very much impressed by the efforts and the dedication shown by your team. Many congratulations to them.

B: Thank you Mr. Johnson. I hope you will give us an opportunity to bring these ideas to fruition.

Johnson: Certainly Miss. Kapoor. I will have my legal team draw up a contract and get Ellie to send it to you. Congratulations Mr. Sehgal. You did a fine job up there. I hope this association continues for years to come.

M: Certainly sir.

Johnson: Well then I will take your leave. It was nice meeting you Miss. Kapoor, Mr. Sehgal

B: Same here sir.

As soon as Mr. Johnson went from there, Bella turned to Mahir and hugged him tightly. Mahir couldn't bring himself to hug her back. So he simply patted her on the back. She realised him after some time. He knew that it had not escaped her notice that he had not hugged her back. She looked at him questioningly. He simply jerked his head. That's when she seemed to realise that they were standing their office and the whole team was watching her.

B: Oops! Hey why is everyone staring at me? It's party time.

At these words, everyone erupted in cheers. The atmosphere transformed from anxious to jubilant almost instantly. Everyone was congratulating each other. Forgetting all about her ill health, she threw herself into the celebrations. She was the life and soul of the party for the next few hours. Mahir just stood in one corner and observed her. Every time he saw her smile, he cursed himself for being the reason why this smile will get wiped off forever.

After a while he couldn't take it anymore. So he went home without informing anyone.
