CHAPTER 11

B: What? How is that possible? I am not pregnant.

M: Bella I...

B: Mahir Sehgal, don't you dare utter a single word. You have broken my trust and now you are saying that I am pregnant?

Amma: Don't shout at him Bella. I know he is at fault, but at least he had the guts to tell us. You on the other hand had decided to hide everything from us.

Appa: Bella do you realise what you both have done?

B: Nothing happened Appa. We did nothing.

Appa: If nothing had happened then how come you are pregnant?

B: I am not pregnant. How many times will I have to repeat that?

Sumi ma: Bella you have been showing all the symptoms of pregnancy.

B: Ma, you yourself said that they could be because of irregular sleep patterns and acidity.

Sumi ma: At that time I did not know this.

B: Ma, trust me. Nothing happened.

Amma: It's okay Bella, you don't have to lie anymore. We already know everything...

B: Amma I am NOT...

Kuhu: Let's do a home pregnancy test. It will solve all of our problems.

B: No ma, I want to speak with Mahir. And anyways according to you guys we have already done the worst. I am already pregnant, there can nothing worse than this. So it's fine.

Saying this she grabbed Mahir's hand and almost dragged him towards her room. Mahir, already feeling guilty went along with her with his head bent low. Once inside the room she

shut the door and locked it. Mahir was waiting for her to say something.

B: Do you have anything to say in your defence? If yes then speak up, because once I start speaking, you will not get a chance to speak at all.

M: Bella I deserve to be punished. You life has been ruined completely.

B: Anything other than this shit? Like for instance why did you break my trust Mahir? We had decided not to tell anyone anything. So now speak up.

Saying this she went to the door, unlocked it and called Dolly. Dolly came up; Bella said something to her and sent her off. Now she once again locked the door and turned to Mahir. It was remarkable how she managed to look terrifyingly beautiful even when she was angry. Mahir was feeling quite scared. He had never seen Bella this mad before.

M: Bella you are pregnant. I couldn't keep my crime hidden any longer. I had to tell everyone.

B: Crime? Let's forget it for the moment. Who the hell told you that I am pregnant?

M: You have been getting all the symptoms Bella...

B: And who are you? A doctor?

M: No Bella, but...

B: And what crime Mahir? Is it a crime to save your best friend's life according to you? You saved my life idiot. Or at the very least you saved from having to stay at a hospital. Do you even realise that?

Just then there is a knock on the door. Bella opens it to find Dolly standing there with a book in her hand. She thanked her and told her to go. After having locked the door securely once again she turned back to Mahir. Mahir was curious to see which book she had asked Dolly to bring. He saw a tattered old copy of his old biology textbook in her hand. Why would she need a biology text book now?

B: Okay so you thought that I was pregnant. Fine. Then you should have spoken with me first. Why did you have to involve the whole family? Do you even realise that if Amma had not spoken up you would have been in jail right now? And what the hell did you tell them that Sumi ma is so angry with you. She almost called you a...

M: I just told them that we spent the night together at the Lonavala farmhouse and that you were ill and semi-conscious and I... I...

B: (Claps her hands) Great. So that is why Sumi ma thought you had taken advantage of the fact that I was not in my senses. Wow. Are you so eager to land up in jail? Then do one thing, kill me and then you can get yourself arrested for my murder.

M: But Bella that is what happened right? I mean we both were hardly wearing any thing and we were so close...

B: Mahir I always knew that you hated biology and you never paid any attention in any of the classes in school. But to not know even the basics is too much. Here is our school biology text book. Read the chapter named reproduction carefully; then you will understand that this not how pregnancy works.

Just then Amma called them downstairs.

B: Amma, we will come in ten minutes.

Amma: No we want you downstairs right now. And by right now I mean RIGHT NOW.

They both knew that when Amma is in this kind of mood it is better to do as she says otherwise consequences would be dire. So they both rushed downstairs.

Appa: We have decided something. And you will have to accept it.

Sumi ma: Yes no arguments would be tolerated. Understood?
