CHAPTER 1

The story starts with a beautiful girl with long straight hair sitting in her cabin frowning over her laptop. She is trying to do her work but is unable to do anything. She is distracted and rightly so. In the evening she was supposed to meet a boy for her marriage alliance. She couldn't even imagine marrying someone let alone a complete stranger. But she had to at least meet him as it was her Amma and Aapa's wish. And for her that was enough. Ever since her parent's death she and her older brother had been living with them. She barely had any memories of her biological parents. Vyankatesh and Gayatri Iyer had been her parents for as long as she could remember.

She had refused to meet anyone for a long time now. Each time her Amma would bring an eligible bachelor's photo and each time she would refuse to meet him. This had been going on for quite some time now but this time no amount of refusing, throwing tantrums helped her. Amma was adamant that she at least meet this guy. So she had finally agreed to meet him on the condition that he will meet at a time was suitable to her. But now she was regretting her decision already. There was so much work that was pending. She was not a workaholic per say. She always had plenty of time for her family and her family included Amma, Appa, Sumi ma, Kuhu, Rehan and Mahir.

If anyone other than these people demanded her time, she would quickly get irritated. Like today. She had work to do, a very important meeting was coming up next week and she was still not fully prepared. This particular client was known to be very stubborn and difficult to please. After months of pursuing him, he had finally agreed to this meeting. If things went smoothly, their companies would benefit tremendously from this deal. But for that she had to be prepared.

Just then there was a knock on her cabin's door. A handsome young man was standing at her door. His generally smiling face was looking worried. "May I come in Bella?, Mahir asked. She nodded, her eyes already back at her laptop screen.

M: You not ready yet? What are you doing? You will be late and then Amma Appa will get upset.

B: Please not you too. I don't know why is nobody able to understand simple English? I don't want to get married. I have told them multiple times. But will they understand? No! They keep on going on about how this is the right age to get married. This is not the age to get married. It is the age to build up my career. After marriage there will be no career. Only keeping the husband and the in laws happy...

Bella is pacing around the room in an agitated manner. With each new round she is having a sip of water. Mahir is smiling very faintly. Bella. Sweet but impatient Bella. Whenever she is agitated she will drink tons of water. It was her habit. She was still rambling.

Mahir and Bella had been best friends since Bella and Rehan had come to stay with Mr. and Mrs. Iyer. Bella was all of fours years old then. Mahir was four years and three months old. Being three months older than her he had taken on the responsibility of caring for and looking after Bella. Memories of a four year old Bella playing on a swing in their garden brought a huge smile on his face.

Just then Bella looked at him.

B: Are you even listening to what I am saying?... What are you laughing at? You think its funny do you? Don't worry it will be your turn soon. I heard Sumi ma and Amma speaking the other day. Even Sumi ma is looking a suitable girl for you. The day she finds a girl for you, you will be pacing the room and I will be smiling at you.

M: Bella... Bella... Bella... That day has already come.

B: What do you mean?

M: I mean that Sumi ma has already found a suitable girl for me. I am supposed to meet her at the same that you are supposed to meet that boy.

B: What?

M: Yes this is all Amma and Sumi ma's plan. They want both of us to meet the respective boy and girl at the same time because they don't want us to cook up some plan to avoid this meeting.

B: So now what? I was hoping you will rescue me from that boy, but you will be busy with that girl. So that means that neither can I rescue you nor can you rescue me. We are doomed.

M: Bella you are so dramatic. No we are not doomed. I have a plan. But you will have to listen to me without flipping out. Got it?

B: I am all ears. At this point I am ready to do anything. Short of threatening that guy to reject me, there is nothing that I can do. I mean yes I can reject him but then I will have to come with a reason as to why am I rejecting him and that reason has to be a valid one otherwise Amma will see through it...

M: Oh god Bella! You talk so much when you are worried. Relax. I have a fool proof plan. Just do as I say.

CHAPTER 2

Bella is sitting with Mayur in Hotel Sea Princess. It has been about forty five minutes since she came there. Mayur had come late. Bella hated when people kept her waiting. She was about to leave when Mayur had shown up grinning from ear to ear. He was not at all sorry that he was late. In fact he didn't even realise that he was late. He just slid in the seat opposite her as if he was perfectly on time. Bella had expected a I am sorry to have kept you waiting' at the very least. But so far nothing.

The moment he arrived, he called a waiter and ordered a cappuccino for himself and a cold coffee for Bella. Then he had had the audacity to say,' I know you girls cannot handle bitter coffee.' Bella hated cold coffee. She always had an Americano. But this arrogant idiot had not even bothered to ask her what she wanted. Three minutes into the meeting, he already had three black marks against him. Bella thought, at this rate I might not have to use Mahir's idea at all.

As soon as the waiter disappeared, he started talking about himself. After talking about himself for the next twenty minutes, he seemed to realise that Bella had not uttered a single word since his arrival.

Mayur: Bella don't be shy! Come on. Say something. I am the only one who has been talking. And why aren't you drinking your coffee? Didn't you like it?

Bella is a girl of very few words around strangers.

B: You have talking non-stop since your arrival. So I thought why not enjoy the view till you stop?

Mayur: Hahahahahahaha Bella you are so funny! I think we will get along really well. Well you talk about yourself now.

B: I don't like to talk about myself. You ask me question and I will answer it.

Mayur: Accha I was thinking about you know, our marriage and I wanted to ask you... have ever had you know... I mean have ever done that. I mean are you a... a... a...

B: Virgin? Are you asking me am I a virgin? Are you asking me whether I have had sex with anyone?

Mayur: (Looking scandalised) Ummm... yeah...

B: Are you?

Mayur: What?

B: Are you a virgin? Have you ever had sex with anyone?

Mayur: How does that matter? And anyways stop saying those words.

B: I mean, come on! You can discreetly ask me such a personal question in our very first meeting, and I can't even say those words? Like, really?

Normally Bella would have stopped entertaining such a person long ago. But today's mission was to push his buttons and get him to make a fool out of himself. So far the task was very easy. That was her and Mahir's plan.

ELSEWHERE...

At some cafe Mahir is sitting, waiting for the girl Tanya to show up. It has been quite some time and Mahir is beginning to feel anxious. Anxious not because that girl had failed to arrive, but because of her late arrival, his plan was going for a toss. Presently he saw a girl being led to his table. He stood up and smiled at her. She smiled back. He gestured for her to sit opposite him, but she slid in the seat besides him.

Mahir was feeling uncomfortable. He was not someone who felt comfortable in physical proximity with a stranger. He tried to distance himself from her.

Tanya: Hi! Why don't we order something?

M: Sure. What would you like?

Tanya: I will have a grilled sandwhich. Waise, I like men who like to take charge, if you know what I mean?

M: What? Hmmm. Yes.

Tanya: What do you want?

M: I will have one Chocolate Brownie please.

Tanya: Yummm. Chocolate! I looove chocolate.

Saying this, she winked at him. Her hand was resting on his hand. And her other hand was playing with her hair in a very suggestive manner. Now feeling supremely uncomfortable, he excused himself, saying he would like to visit the bathroom. He almost ran towards the bathroom.

Once safely inside, he took a few calming breaths. Once he was calm enough, he picked up phone and called Bella.

M: Come on Bella pick up the phone. Come on... Oh! Hi! Bellla, how is it going?

B: Hi jaan! Everything is going smoothly. How is it going for you?

M: So far izzat bachake bhaag raha hu. I am in bathroom, hiding from her. I am about to start our plan. You do the same. Okay? All the best!

B: Ya jaanu. I will. Bye! See you tonight.

Mahir came out of the bathroom and came to his table. This time around he sat across from her. Before she could say anything,

M: It will be easier to talk this way.

Tanya: Yes you are right.

M: So Tanya what do you do for a living? I heard you have completed your engineering degree? So that must make you really smart.

Tanya: Yes. But after completing my degree, I realised that this is not what I want to do. So I took a short course for photography. Now I am a professional photographer and I am also trying my hand at interior designing.

M: Oh wow! You are so confused. I mean my Bella is so clear as to what she wants in life.

Tanya: Bella?

M: Bella. Bella Kapoor? Come on! You must have heard of Bella Kapoor right?

Tanya: Oh yes. I have heard of her.

M: So as I was saying, my Bella was very clear right from her childhood as to what she wants to do with her life. I hope you know how to cook right?

Tanya: What? God no! I hate cooking. I mean, I never did have any time for all this nonsense.

M: Why?

Tanya: Oh well I was always busy studying. And anyways, we always had a maid for cooking. Why should I learn all this backward stuff?

M: Even we have maids for cooking. I mean we have multiple servants for almost all the household chores. But even then my Bella can cook all kinds of food. Not just Punjabi food but south Indian, even Italian, Mexican, Chinese...

Tanya: Oh really? (By now Tanya has noticed how he has said my Bella multiple times. And she is feeling really pissed off.)

M: Yes. And please don't say you were busy studying. Bella went to Cambridge University to complete her MBA in Business Management. She graduated with top marks.

Tanya: (Now really irritated) Okay so why don't you...

M: You know you should meet Bella and learn a few things from her before our marriage. She will teach you how to make all of my favourite food items.

By now Mahir was feeling very guilty. He knew he was being very unjust to this girl. Also to some extent he was insulting her. He did not want to do this but...

Tanya: Hey its all right. I know this is simply your defence mechanism. I was out line earlier on. But I was just testing you to see if you take advantage of the fact that I am sitting so close to you or I am holding your hand. But you didn't. That proves that you are a decent guy. Let's start over again.

AT HOTEL SEA PRINCESS

Just then Bella's phone rings. She notices that its Mahir calling.

M: Oh! Hi! Bellla, how is it going?

B: Hi jaan! Everything is going smoothly. How is it going for you?

M: So far izzat bachake bhaag raha hu. I am in bathroom, hiding from her. I am about to start our plan. You do the same. Okay? All the best!

B: Ya jaanu. I will. Bye! See you tonight.

At jaan, Mayur's eyebrows shoot up. At see you tonight, he looks at her startled.

B: That was Mahir Sehgal. My best friend. So what was I saying? Yes! Are you a virgin?

Mayur: Ummm

B: Okay I will answer first. No I am not a virgin. I have had multiple boy friends. Happy now? And by the way I hate cold coffee. You cannot simply assume that I like cold coffe just because someone else does...

Mayur: I know. I am sorry. I was just testing you. I wanted to know if you are someone who can stand up for herself. And I was right. You sure know how to stand up for yourself. I know I had no right to test you but I did not want to end up marrying someone who does not have a voice of her own. If you can forgive me, I will like to start off again. Hi! I am Mayur.

Bella is stunned hearing those words. Mayur is standing in front of her with his hand out stretched. Bella reluctantly takes his hand.

B: Hi! I am Bella

Mayur: And I know you only drink Americano, so I will order one for you.

B: Excuse me for a bit. I will be right back.

Bella rushes off to the bathroom. Once inside she takes out her phone.

B: Hey Mahir. Our plan flopped. This guy is actually quite decent. There is no way I can reject him because I will not have any valid reasons. Now what to do?

M: Same here. She saw through my rude behaviour. Let's tell them the truth. They deserve to know.

B: Okay. Bye.

Bella goes back to her table.

Mayur: Listen Bella, I know you are an ambitious girl. I know you singlehandedly mange your business along with your father. I also know that you are the heir apparent to the Kapoor Group Of Companies. And that's all right. I want you to know that I will not expect you to stop working with your company after marriage. In fact I do not expect you to work in my dad's firm at all. You can continue to expand your companies. I will support you.

B: That's really sweet of you Mayur, but I do not want to get married. I have my reasons. But I want to be honest with you. It's got nothing to do with you. I am simply not ready to get married. Despite your promise of supporting me and never pressurising me, I cannot bring myself to say yes to you. I hope you get it.

Mayur: I guess it's your decision Bella and I respect that. But how are you going to convince my parents. I cannot simply reject you. I will have to give some reason and I cannot think of a single reason to reject you.

ELSEWHERE

After his call with Bella ended, Mahir turned to Tanya

M: Listen you are very sweet but I can't marry you. I don't want to marry anyone. So please can you reject me?

Tanya: What?

M: Please?

Tanya: I respect your decision Mahir. I guess I should thank you for being honest with me. But I can't reject you just like that. I will have to give some reason.

M: You can say that I misbehaved with you.

Tanya: No I can't. I cannot defame you like that. We will have to think of something else.

M: Listen we don't have time. Our parents will today evening and...

Tanya: I know. Don't worry we will think of something. Hey! Can Bella help us? Can she help us convince my parents that you are not right for me?

M: That was Bella on the call. She is in the same situation.

Tanya: That's great then.

M: Huh?

Tanya: I mean you both can help each other. Provided the guy she is sitting with agrees.

M: He probably will.

Tanya: Okay so call her.

Mahir calls Bella.

M: Hey listen, Tanya has got a plan. Put your phone on speaker mode.

Tanya: Hi! I am Tanya. I have a great plan for Mission Rishta Break.

I know this a really long one but do tell me what you think. This is just a filler chapter.

CHAPTER 3

The first part of the plan was to get everyone's parents to come to one place instead of Tanya'a parents and Sumi ma going to that cafe and Amma and Appa along with Mayur's parents coming to Sea Princess. Plan could be successfully executed in Sea Princess so Tanya called her parents to inform them that she and Mahir are going to Hotel Sea Princess since they did not like the cafe much. She asked them to inform Sumi ma too as Mahir's phone was dead. Actually Mahir did want to seem involved in the place change plan beacuse if he was involved, Sumi ma would definitely smell a huge rat. So Tanya lied that his phone was dead.

The second part was Tanya and Mahir reaching Hotel Sea Princess. Once there they met up with Bella and Mayur. There Tanya explained her plan in more detail. The plan was to make her and Mayur's parents believe that Bella and Mahir were having an affair. BeHir knew that their parents will not be fooled and they were going to be in so much trouble later on. But that was to be dealt with later on. Appa had always taught them when in crisis deal with one problem at a time. If you try to tackle multiple problems at one, you are going to end up defeated and exhausted.

Now the question was how to convince them of BeHir's affair? Both the set of parents being fairly progressive, holding hands or talking with each other or caught hugging each other was not going to convince them. It had to be really suspicious. So Tanya suggested why can't she and Mayur plant a seed of doubt in their parents mind? BeHir agreed that this would make things authentic.

They also booked a whole dining hall for the evening. After that was secured they all sat and thought about what could be done that would look suspicious. After a lot of brainstorming, it was decided that BeHir will disappear around the time the parent were supposed to reach the place. For the timing to be precise, they needed to their parent's exact location. One thing was sure everyone will start off together as they were all at BeHir's place.

Bella suggested that they take Vinay, their driver into the loop. He could keep them informed of the location. He was also very loyal and could keep a secret. So she called Vinay and just asked him let her know when they started from home and when they reached within a ten minute radius of the hotel. He agreed saying he will tell her when they will start off, but he will not be able to tell when they reached within a ten minute radius Amma will get suspicious if he called her in front of them.

That was true; Vinay calling Bella would be very odd. And also if she and Mahir disappeared even when they knew the parents will reach any moment will reflect very badly on Amma, App and Sumi ma. They couldn't do that. So they will have to wing it as they go.

Just then the waiter came to inform them that the dining hall was ready for them. They all shifted there and sat around chatting. All through the next couple of hours, Mayur and Tanya kept shooting each other glances. They were also getting along really well. At one point, Tanya requested Bella to accompany her.

B: What happened?

Tanya: Are you sure you are not interested in Mayur? I mean, he seems like a really nice guy. Very supportive and cooperative. Then why...

B: Why am I rejecting him? I have my reasons Tanya. Even I think he is a nice guy. To be honest he is perfect husband material. And you can be assured that I have no interest in him.

Tanya: Are you very sure about that?

B: Tanya I am very sure.

Tanya: So you wouldn't mind if I...

B: If you approach him? No I won't. He is a nice guy and he deserves happiness, as do you. If you think he is the one for you then go ahead by all means. See Tanya if there is one thing that I have learnt from experience, it is this, an opportunity once lost, never comes back. So go for it.

Tanya: Thanks Bella. I was wondering if it is appropriate to approach him today as today you both were supposed to...

B: Don't think about. Maybe don't tell your parents today but at least talk to him. See if he feels the same way. Then you can figure out a way of telling your parents.

Tanya: Yes I will do that. Come on let's go. I will speak with him now itself.

They both return to the table.

B: Mayur, Tanya wants to say something to you. So we will leave you guys to it. Let's go Mahir.

As they moved away from the table, Bella explained Mahir what had happened. Mahir was happy. After about twenty minutes, Tanya and Mayur came back holding hands. BeHir smiled at them. Just as BeHir were congratulating the happy couple, Bella's phone rang. It was Vinay informing her that they were about to start off from home.

Bella decided to check the traffic conditions from her home to the hotel. Google map's estimated time was about twenty minutes. So within twenty minutes their parents would be coming. BeHir decided to move to the parking lot. On the way out, Mahir told a waiter that if anyone asked about them, he was to say they went in parking lot's direction.

Having set up the trail, for the parents to follow BeHir proceeded towards the parking lot. They had still not decided what they were going to do. Once inside the car, they waited. As soon as Vinay dropped everyone at the hotel entrance, he called Bella

Vinay: Didi I have dropped everyone.

B: Okay. Tanks Vinay. We owe you one.

Inside the hotel dining room.

When everyone entered, only Tanya and Mayur greeted them.

Sumi ma: Where are Mahir and Bella?

Amma: Yes where are they?

Tanya: Don't know aunty. About fifteen minutes ago Bella said something about going to the bathroom. She has not returned since then.

Mayur: And soon after that Mahir also disappeared saying that he will make arrangements for the food.

Amma: (Murmuring to Sumitra) Something is wrong. Don't know what this new drama is.

Sumi ma: One thing is sure; they are going to be in so much trouble now.

Aapa: Let's discuss this later. (A little louder) I think we will wait for them right here. Till they come, why don't Mayur and Tanya speak with their parents?

Tanya's mom: I think its a great idea.

So Tanya and her parents go off to one corner and Mayur and his parents head off to another.

Tanya's corner

Tanya's mom: So how did it go?

Tanya's dad: Did you like him?

Tanya: Ma, papa something is not quite correct.

Tanya's mom: What do you mean?

Tanya: I mean Mahir has been acting really weird all evening. He barely spoke with me. He was on his phone constantly. When I demanded his attention, he kept his phone aside. But even then he was distracted.

Mayur's corner

Mayur's mom: What happened?

Mayur's dad? You look worried. Is everything alright.

Mayur: No dad. Bella was not herself all evening. She was very distracted. Kept talking to Mahir on phone. And she did not ask me a single question, nor did she answer any of my questions.

Tanya's corner

Tanya: Mahir suddenly said that he wanted to go to the bathroom. After he came back he suddenly announced that he did not like the cafe and so we will go Hotel Sea Princess. Just call your mom and inform her. He also told me to inform Sumitra aunty about the change.

Ever since we came here he has been chatting with Bella non-stop.

Mayur's corner

Mayur: When her phone rang again, she excused herself. When she came back she told me Mahir and the girl he was supposed to meet are coming here. As soon as Mahir arrived, she has been talking with him. I don't know what to think.

Tanya's corner

Tanya: I think Mahir and Bella have feeling for each other ma. And they were trying to tell us about the same but couldn't.

Mayur's corner

Mayur: I think Bella likes Mahir. She tried to tell me something many times but stopped herself.

Just then

Appa: I don't where these two are. You guys wait here we will go and see.

Mayur's mom: After hearing what Mayur had to say, even I want to ask a few questions to Bella.

Tanya's dad: Even we would like to talk to Mahir.

So leaving Appa, Tanya's dad and Mayur's dad in the dining room, everyone went out. Sumi ma decided to check the bathroom first. Just as she was exiting the bathroom, a waiter approached her,

Waiter: May I help you ma'am?

Sumi Ma: Yes. Have you seen Bella Kapoor?

Waiter: Yes. She went in the direction of parking lot along with Mahir sir.

Sumi ma: Thank you.

Sumi ma went and informed everyone that they both went towards parking lot. By now Amma and Sumi ma were feeling very anxious. They both were wondering the same thing. What were Mahir and Bella up to now?

But they couldn't say anything in front of others, so they kept mum. Just as they were approaching the parking lot, Tanya shot a quick text to Mahir.

Tanya: Mahir get ready. We are coming.

M: Bella they all are coming. What do we do?

B: Mahir let's pretend as if we are kissing each other.

M: No. We can't do that. Not something so obvious. Let's think of something else.

Tanya's text: We are almost there.

M: Oh no!!!!

Bella, knowing that Mahir will not do anything and will spoil the whole plan in his panicked state acted quickly. She quickly pulled Mahir close to her and tilted her head to one side. Now head was covering Mahir's face. She was careful enough to keep a fair amount of distance in their lips. In bright light, it would have looked fake, but in semi darkness it looked as if they were sharing a lip lock. Mahir was looking as if hundred volts current was running through his body.

B: Rearrange your expressions you idiot. Otherwise they will see. Or if you can't then at least close your eyes for god's sake. And hold me. Don't sit there like a statue.

Mahir moves his hands to her shoulders.

B: Not my shoulders stupid. Hold my waist and pull me slightly close.

Mahir does as he is told. He is still very much in shock.

B: Snap out of it Mahir. They are almost here. Get ready to answer their questions.

Just then there is knock on the window. They both jump apart as if startled. Arranging their faces in appropriately ashamed expressions, they both get out of the car. Bella quickly grabs Mahir's hand. Holding hands they stand in front of everyone, their expressions sufficiently abashed. Bella looks at Mayur and signs him.

Mayur: What is all this Bella?

Tanya: Yes Mahir what's going on here?

Mayur's mom: I think we all saw what was going on. Would you care to explain?

B: Yes aunty. But not here. Let's go upstairs. This place is not right for this discussion.

Sumi ma and Amma were not convinced by their act, but nevertheless they had to go with it.

Amma: Didn't you think that this place is not an appropriate place before you started making out with Mahir?

B: Amma please...

Mayur's mom: Gryatriji, with all due respect, I think we should hear them out before reacting.

They all went upstairs. Appa was waiting for them anxiously.

Appa: Gayatri, Sumitra, what happened? Where did you find them?

Sumi ma: (In very low tones) We found them in Bella's car. They were pretending to kiss each other.

Appa: Pretending?

Amma: Yes pretending. We saw that very clearly, but I think Mayur's mom thinks that they were actually making out with each other. I don't know what will happen now.

BeHir were still standing there with guilty expressions on their faces. Mayur and Tanya were trying to look at them in an accusing manner but were not succeeding. Bella shot them a stern glare. If they did not act well, then their whole plan would have flopped. Seeing Bella's glare, Mayur rearranged his expressions in an appropriately hurt look. He also nudged Tanya and she did the same. Before anyone could say anything;

Tanya: Is this what you were trying to tell me the whole evening Mahir?

M: Yes.

Mayur: Bella you should have told me.

B: Mayur I tried but was not sure if Mahir felt the same way. So I stopped myself each time. I just wanted to have a talk with Mahir. So we sneaked off. Aunty, uncle what you all saw... We had not planned it at all. When I realised that even Mahir had feelings for me, I couldn't stop myself.

And she stepped on Mahir's foot, very hard.

M: Ouch! I mean, yes. We got carried away. We did not mean to disrespect you at all.

B: We are very sorry aunty, uncle. I hope you can forgive us.

Mayur's mom: Why didn't you talk with him at your home before this meeting? It would have saved you from all this embarrassment.

B: It's true aunty. Ever since Amma told me that I was supposed to meet Mayur, I had begun to feel that something was not quite correct. But I could not figure out what was wrong. Today when I said goodbye to Mahir before coming here to meet Mayur, it hit me. I realised the very thought of going away from Mahir was making me uneasy.

M: Yes aunty. Even I felt like something was missing. I kept calling Bella throughout the evening. But when my phone's battery died, there was no way of knowing how Bella's date was going so I decided to come here. I couldn't stop myself from talking to Bella about this. So I followed her.

B: Mayur I am really sorry, but I would like to thank you. If it had not been for you, I would have never realised that I have loved Mahir all along. Mahir is the one for me. Thank you Mayur. Thank you so much. I hope that even you find someone very special.

M: Tanya, I owe my whole life. You made me realise my love for Bella. Thank you and sorry. I hope you can forgive me.

Mayur's dad: I think kids have made their intentions very clear. There is no point is waiting around. Vyankateshji, it was nice meeting you. I can assure you that there are no hard feelings on our part. I am just glad Bella had the guts to speak out the truth. God bless you dear.
