'I'll never work with Rajeev, and that's final'

Ekta Kapoor also talks about cracking the whip at Balaji. She says, "I want my actors to rehearse their lines at home. From now on I want punctual, professional, cost-effective actors"

What's the status of your relationship with Smriti Irani at present?
Smriti has now become a producer herself. So , how can we use her as an actor for more than the one show? She's acting in her own soaps now. At the same time she's working in my No.1 soap Kyunki... As an actress Smriti has been working with me for seven years now. We've had our ups and downs and we've worked it out between us. I also have Sakshi Tanwar. If I get one more actor like her I wouldn't mind doing another Kahaani Ghar Ghar Kii for 10 years.

Ekta Kapoor
Is Smriti able to give you the time that you require from her for Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi?
Actually….no. It's been quite tough arranging her schedule. But I understand eventually everyone has to do what's right for their own life and career. And we're ready to extend all the support that she needs from us. But yes, I do need to cultivate a new generation of actors. That's why I've taken an all-new cast in my new show Kasturi. It goes on air on Star after KBC. Other than Rupa Ganguly it has a completely new cast.

So what are the new changes at Balaji that we keep hearing about?
We've decided to work in a cost-effective way so that creative heads and writers get more money than actors. I sincerely believe that writers and creative heads make a soap work. To be fair, there are no stars on TV. We require good directors rather than tantrum-prone actors who spend hours on make-up then come on the sets and ask about their lines. I want my actors to rehearse their lines at home. From now on I want punctual, professional, cost-effective actors.

So you think your actors aren't giving you enough time in your dailies?
I'd say it's human nature for monotony to set in after many years of doing the same thing. The hours of work put in by TV stars make them jaded. It's very tiring indeed. Recently my father did a few episodes of Kyunki… He was left wondering how TV actors continue doing the same soap for years. Your body and mind get tired. Unlike a film actor who moves from one ambience and set-up to another, TV actors work in the same set-up day after day. When the soap ends they feel bereft.

Rajeev Khandewal says he doesn't want to work with you unless you offer him something substantial. What do you think about it?
I don't want to talk about Rajeev. I don't want to carry this on and on. Rajeev has made a habit of talking to the press and then denying it to me privately. I've got SMSes from him to prove it. I'll never work with Rajeev, and that's final.

Girls just wanna have fun!

Aparna Tilak and Shveta Salve went to Goa on an all girls-trip

HARSHADA REGE

It's often said that two actresses can't be friends but the women in the television industry seem to defy that norm. Aparna Tilak and Shveta Salve are two such actors who love hanging out together even after work. The girls took off for a trip to Goa recently, after the first season of their show Left Right Left on SAB got wrapped up. And to make it an all girls trip, they decided to have some fun minus their respective partners. "We had four days and we decided to make the most of it. Shveta is a pro at making the required arrangments. She did everything from doing the hotel bookings to travel ararngement, I just had to follow her," says Aparna.
The two girls turned a lot of heads in Goa. But not all encounters were pleasant. "It's surprising, but the guys who hit on us were foreigners. We could deal with most of them, but on one particular evening we got very angry with two men who were clicking our pictures. At first we tried to avoid a confrontation but they wouldn't leave us alone. That's when we grabbed their camera. Thankfully, things were sorted out and we left the place," says Aparna.
Shveta says, "The trip was planned a while back. Another friend of mine called Nisha Merchant came along. Aparna does panic sometime, but since I know the place very well we didn't have any problem."
Speaking about the trip, Shveta adds, "We did everything from playing on the beach to eating local delicacies. We had fish for breakfast, lunch and dinner. We visited all the markets and had a great time bargaining."
Aparna feels that if two actors manage to look beyond their professional gains, they can become friends. "We have never asked each other about the projects we have signed or are looking at. I know it's easier said than done but we have been friends for a while now and I don't think anything can change that," adds Aparna. Well this is definitely girl power at its best!

'People link me with Amna'

By Subhash K Jha

Television's favourite pinup guy Rajiv Khandelwal is on a new high. Not only is his second daily Left Right Left on SAB channel a hit, he has also adopted a five-year old girl child.

He talks about it reluctantly. "I really don't want to make a public declaration of this. I've kept it a secret. But I guess it's bound to be out. Her name is Swati. I adopted her because I love kids specially little girls.

I saw her picture and fell in love with her face. I went to an institute called Muskaan and adopted her…Technically it's called sponsership. But to me she's my daughter."

Wouldn't this adopted child later cause problems for Rajiv when he has his own children?. "Why should it? To me there's no difference between my biological child and Swati."

Rajiv had been visiting this institute for a while. "I'm not sure Swati knows who I am. Each time she's asked she shyly says I'm on tv."

About his new hit show Rajiv says, "I took on my second daily in the same spirit as I took on Deal Ya No Deal. The idea is to go further as an actor. The pleasure of wearing an army uniform in a soap made me sign Left Right Left. I always wanted to be in the army.

This is my chance to make my dream come true. Unfortunately the show isn't as olive-green as I 'd have liked it to be. I guess I'm enjoying the content. The army isn't easy to portray on the small screen. We need to work even harder."

The show has garnered good TRPs. " The credit goes to the team. I wonder where are all those people who said I was doomed to failure when Deal Ya No Deal was doing badly?"

Rajiv agrees Left Right Left hasn't carried forward his popularity as Sujal on Ekta Kapoor's Kahiin To Hoga. "But give it time. The popularity of Sujal doesn't happen every day. If history is created everyday it becomes hysteria.

I find myself improving as an actor. I feel good about my performance on Left Right Left. I'd still like to do sparing work. As long as my financial needs are taken care of I'll rather do the work I believe in."

How come no link-up stories between Rajiv and his Left Right Left co-star Shweta Salve ? "Ha! Good question. I guess people are too busy talking about me and Amna Sharif to link me with anyone…My friendship with Amna remains consistent, not a casualty of all the gossip and speculation."

He gets confessional. "I keep reading these stories about my co-stars like Ghazal Rai and Deep Rana thinking highly of me. Frankly, I'm embarrassed by such incidents…like there was this story of an air-hostess taking my autograph mid-air. Yes, I do take my success, for whatever it's worth, very seriously. But it doesn't make me cautious about taking new steps in my life and career."

My Weekend… Vikas Mankatala

Vikas Mankatala famous as Hooda in Sony's military based show Left Right Left shares with us what he does over his weekends!

Last Weekend
Last weekend I went to my hometown Delhi for a couple of days. When I was there I ended up watching two good movies- Traffic Signal and Water. I really enjoyed both of them. I also had a small get together at my place and called all my old college friends to hang out there.

I did a lot of shopping last weekend. I went to G.K.M Block market, Westgate mall and Rajori Garden! From there I bought purses for my sisters and some casual clothes for myself.

This Weekend
Well my season break is over now, so no weekends for some time now! We have started shooting for the second season of Left Right Left so I'll be very busy. Though, if I do get a break now I really want to watch some Hollywood movies. I heard 300 is very good so I'm really looking forward to watching it. I'd like to see Holiday as well.

Weekend Theory
My weekend theory is to keep everything relaxed. I hang around my place and watch movies. I might surf the net and I check and respond to my fan mail. I try to spend my free time catching up with my friends. In addition to that, Sundays for me also means hitting the gym. I go to Power House gym in Juhu circle and work out.

Main bhi model

Cut To Size: Rajeev Khandelwal

We are told that before making his debut as an actor, Rajeev Khandelwal wanted to make his name in the fashion industry as a model.

Recently, we overheard the actor telling contestants of this year's Grasim Mr India contest that he too had auditioned for the competition 10 years ago, however, he was rejected due to his short height.

It seems Rajeev also tried his luck at other male pageants but had to go back home dejected, as he didn't match the height requirements. Somehow, we can't imagine him as the next John Abraham, no? Tee hee!

Kavita Shyam

After Left Right Left and Jitein Hain Jiske Liye, Tony and Deeya Singh are set to launch their new show, Jhoomein Jiya Re for Zee TV, in May. The production house is known to have launched numerous fresh faces in the past (Jassi Jaisi Koi Nahin, Jab Love Hua and Left Right Left) and will do so this time as well. Reportedly, Preeti Amin (Lakshmi in Kasamh Se) will play the main protagonist while Gaurav Chopra will play her love interest. And that's not all. If all goes well, Gauri Tonk will play an important role in the serial after her much appreciated stint in Nach Baliye 2. Interestingly, Deepak, who was her choreographer in Nach Baliye 2, will again choreograph her dance sequences in Jhoomein Jiya Re.

Says an excited Gauri Tonk, "Yes, I have been approached for the role of a principal in a dance school. However, money is yet to be discussed and if everything falls into place, I am ready to work with them. Besides, I will have my

Preeti
choreographer Deepak by my side. I play a strong disciplinarian with firm ideals in life."

Deeya Singh, producer of the show, says, "Yes this is the new show that we are working on. I cannot divulge details about the show, but I am sure the audiences will like it."

Says a source, "Jhoomein Jiya Re revolves round a young girl who wants the best in life. The main protagonist played by Preeti is that of a young girl who lacks confidence and is a complete loser in life. She lives with her strict father who has had a bad past. In order to avoid her father, Preeti takes up a job in a dance academy and realises that her true calling is dancing." Preeti, however, was unavailable for comment.

'Why can't I adopt a child?'
[ 2 Apr, 2007 2049hrs ISTTIMES NEWS NETWORK ]
RSS Feeds| SMS NEWS to 8888 for latest updates

Angelina Jolie, Madonna, Sushmita Sen... Rajeev Khandelwal. Sounds incongruous? But this TV actor has decided to enter the hitherto females-only club by adopting a girl child. The problem is that the authorities are refusing him for he is a single male.

"I have tried to initiate the process for adoption of a girl child, but I have been denied only because I am a single male," rues the actor.

Explaining his reasons behind wanting to adopt a daughter, Rajeev explains, "I have no sister and having a daughter in the house will complete the family. My family is all for this idea too. I have no reason why I want to adopt, I guess its sheer instinct and pure emotions that drove me to this idea," says the 30-year-old telly star. Riding high on these emotions, he says "I would love to see a cute lil girl hanging on to my neck. But I can't do that because authorities don't consider single men fit enough to be fathers all by themselves."

But, this has not stopped Rajeev from bringing a smile on the face of a girl child. He has gone ahead and decided to sponsor a six-year-old girl. "It's not charity, nor do I want this little girl to know about my identity or know me as her 'father'. It's only for my contentment that I am doing it. I meet this girl on festivals and special occasions and we share a special bond."
