Tring Tring… Crank Crank

There is always a flip side to stardom. Being popular can often be a curse for actors - one of them is that they are easy targets for threat, prank and crank calls. We asked some of them their strange experiences with people and fans.

Shewta Salve
How my fans get my number is something I would like to know! I think everyone gets prank calls from all walks of life but yes, as someone in the glamour industry, the number of crank calls we get are more than usual. They aren't all that bad though. I get calls and SMSs through fans and people who appreciate my work and that feels really great.

Some are crazy, most are funny and a few are scary. I get calls from people hell-bent on troubling me so they go on and on. Then there are some who just want to sit and chat. They want to meet me and come on the sets. From conversations with them I can gauge the caller and figure out their character. I invite them on the sets and we meet up. Most callers are harmless and sweet and thankfully none of them have done weird things like proposing me.

Rajeev Khandelwal in Left Right Left

Rajeev Khandelwal is enjoying his much-deserved break ever since his show Left Right Left has temporarily gone off air due to the Cricket World Cup. At present, the actor is in Delhi, spending time with his parents. And besides taking his parents for a long drive, the actor has made his plans to visit the Nathu La Pass on the China border to meet one of his good friends, who is currently posted there.

Rajeev adds, "This has definitely been a much required break for me. I am sure that we will have something interesting coming up in the serial, as soon as we resume. Now, I just want to travel. I'll be visiting my friend who is currently posted at the Nathu La Pass, on the China border. So far, I have only seen the pictures of the place, but now I want to visit the place myself."

Rajeev further says, "I have already stuffed my bags with woollens since the weather will be really cold out there. I have also bought a new pair of trekking shoes. I will start my journey in a couple of days."

Finally speaking about the World Cup, he says, "I am a big Saurav Ganguly fan and will like to see him perform well in the upcoming matches."

    Prankster No.1

A fortnight ago Koena Mitra played a prank with her friends and colleagues. She messaged them that she was getting engaged on 29 February, from 8 PM onwards and the venue was a suburban hotel. She even added that all those who would be attending should send their address so she could mail them the invite. Many of her friends fell for the prank till they realized the date of the event!

We found out the craziest pranks our television stars have ever played so you can tell us who TVland's prankster No.1 is.

Tasneem Sheikh-Nerurkar (Mohini, Kyunki Saas bhi kabhi Bahu thi)
"During my college days I was a big prankster of my 11th year in Khalsa College. I was the chupa rustom of my class and I remember playing a prank on our Maths teacher. She was very seedhi sadhi and I had put the sticking solution on the chair. She came and sat on it and so her sari tore from the backside!"

Reena Kapoor (Pari, Woh Rehne Wali...)
"I remember when I was in 10th std at Army Public School, Delhi. I was aiming to throw a chalk on my friend but unfortunately it hit my Accounts teacher. Every one knew that I had thrown the chalk but no body uttered a single word. Thank God!"

Ali Merchant (Bharat, Kahaani Ghar Ghar Ki)
"I remember I was in the 11th std studying at National College, Bandra. I remember once I had ragged a classmate to dance to Aaoo Ayaa. Secondly I remember I had put chewing gum on my history professor Mr. Martin's chair. I used to hate him. Other than that it was mostly all relating to ragging with my friends."

Priyanka Bashish (Naina Singh, Left Right, Left)
"During the time of Holi I used to tell to the colony aunties that please give my ball or cloth lying beneath my window gallery and when they used to bend I used to throw water balloons on them. And after that I used to say 'Happy Holi'.

    Sharad Malhotra (Sagar, Banoo Main...)
"I'm a Xaverian, as I have done my schooling and college from Xavier's College, Calcutta. I was in S.Y. B.Com and we decided to rag the freshers. In the end all my friends decided to dress me like a girl. I stood at side of the canteen and as soon as the fresher entered the canteen I went inside and sat beside him and gave cute smile. He got frightened. Gradually I remove my wig and bangles. And after seeing me he was completely shocked and that is the craziest things I have ever done."

    Naman Shaw (Pushkar, Kasamh Se)
"The craziest think I have done was not in my college but I lied to my mom by telling her that I'm going to college. But I had actually gone to Delhi to attend my friend's party. I came back in the evening flight and she thought that I had gone to the college."

    Krazy Kiya Re!
The World Cup is on! And it will mean late, late nights for us fans. Each day, we will address various communities in the city to finactors.d how they are tweaking their lifestyles to be able to partake of all the action. Today, let's catch up with our 24X7 busy TV
    SHVETA SALVE
God forbid, but if I have to shoot when an interesting match is on, I'll try to gang up with crew members who also want to watch the match, and coax my producers to shift the timings. As far as catching up with sleep is concerned, we're as it is used to vague hours.

Shveta Salve to march out of Left Right Left soon

Shveta Salve's track in Left Right Left is going to soon be over after the current season break which the show has taken for World Cup. Shveta, plays a psychiatrist Ritu Mishra, who is actually a spy.

Sukesh Motwani, script writer of the show says "Shveta will be there for few episodes. After that we will wrap up her character. Since she is playing a spy her character will not be there till the end. It has to end somewhere. She will shoot for few episodes after season break."

"The production house is hunting for three new entries in the show. First few episodes we'll be shooting with old cast but after every ten days there will be new entry. Whether they will be new faces I don't know. We'll meeting next week," adds Motwani.

However, Shveta seems to be unaware that her character may be coming to its end in the show. "I'll be there in the show after the break as well. I don't think my role will not be there. Right now I'm busy in hosting the Cricket Star show which comes on Zee TV. But I don't think that they will chop off my character. I'm not taking break after Left Right Left."

Left Right Left crew and cast are re-joining the shoot from 25 March. Before the break, Cadet Naina (Priyanka Bassi) already knows that Captain Rajveer Singh Shekhawat is the real killer of her brother Navin who was in love with Dr Ritu Mishra.

Rajeev: A chhadar for Mahim Darga

Rajeev Khandelwal's production manager visited Mahim Darga and prayed for Rajeev's well being. A touched Rajeev shares his experience.

"My production manager Jamil bhai went to Mahim Darga to offer a chhadar of flower when he got the news. These are the people who don't have a face value but they have a greater value in our life since we are always surrounded by them but I never knew that they care so much for us", said a moved Rajeev.

Khandelwal's make-up man Sunil Tambe was the first person to congratulate him after he won the award for the best actor for Left Right Left at the first annual, 'Sansui Television Awards.' Sunil had also done his make-up for the awards ceremony that was held on 10 March at the Andheri Sports Complex, Mumbai.

Rajeev Khandelwal's mother who stays in Jaipur was also waiting the whole day for his call. She had also hoped that he will win this award.

"She never watches serials but she used to see Left Right Left only for me. Mom was happy with my performance so I called her up late in the night and informed her about the award. She was extremely happy", exclaimed Rajeev.

The handsome telly star's decision to sign up for Left Right Left generated mixed reactions in the industry. So has this award vindicated his stance?

"Some people thought that working for a serial on SAB TV wasn't a smart move but this award proves that I made the right choice", explains Rajeev.

According to a recent survey, when women were asked to choose between a designer wardrobe and their dream man, they happily opted for the former and likewise the guys chose their dream machines over hot women. A.L. Choughule quizzed our TV stars to get their take.

    Priti Amin
A designer wardrobe is what excites me the most. I can dress up and feel like a princess every single day. But with a dream man, the excitement will fade away and he will no longer be special, once the monotony sets in. Besides, unlike your wardrobe, you cannot really change your man and are stuck with him. A designer wardrobe brings a daily dose of excitement and the thrill of trying on something new every single day. In my profession, that's one hell of a great option, which will keep me on a high.

    Priyanka Bassi
I prefer a fancy designer wardrobe anyday instead of a dream man. A designer wardrobe will give me huge options to choose my outfits from. I like being well-dressed everyday and appreciated in the best of clothes and accessories. While I can change my clothes, I can't say the same about the guy. Of course I would love to have a combination of a dream man and a designer wardrobe in my life but my first preference will be a ward-robe because of the variety it will offer.

    Rajeev Khandelwal
I will prefer a fancy car any day because I will get to drive it any time I want. It will not have mood swings and I will be in total control over it. I can even dump the car if I don't want it or if I am bored with it. But that's not going to be possible with a woman. She can change her mind and decide to take me for a ride. A car is harmless and can easily be manipulated and controlled but a woman is always dicey and unpredictable. Give me a car anyday.

    Manish Goyal
A gorgeous woman or a fancy car? Well, a woman brings happiness only for a short period. I would choose a fancy car because it will stay with me permanently and will remain under my control. Besides, I am obsessed withcars and can claim to be an authority on them. With such passion and knowledge about cars, the women will definitely take a backseat.

No takers for this SRK of TV...

The allure of the silver screen has always been fascinating. Maybe that's the reason why, even after reaching iconic status with their larger than life TV characters, almost every TV actor worth a mention is willing to try out his/her luck in films.

But in spite of being big names in the world of TV, in Bollywood they have had no takers.

Rajeev Khandelwal had his share of ego hassle with Ektaa Kapoor after being dubbed as the Shah Rukh Khan of TV. But in spite of slogging hard to prove his talent in Bollywood, all these years, he has no offers to talk about.

Mona Singh became much more than a household name after Jassi Jaisi Koi Nahi. Post Jassi she was supposed to do a film with The Rising producer Bobby Bedi but the film never took off.

"There was a movie which I had signed before but it didn't materialize. I'm yet to get the kind of offer I'm looking for. I'm reading a few script but they are not appealing to me," admits Mona. It was said during Kahiin To Hoga that Aamna Sharif has the kind of face that could appeal to the Bollywood audience.

The petite actress also never really denied her Bollywood ambitions, also claiming that Aamir Khan is her dream actor. But all she has to talk about right now is the Sony show that she is all set to do.

Actors like Amarr Upadhay and Nausheen Ali Sardar gave up their rocking TV career to try out their luck in films but have lost out on both fronts.

Then too there are hopefuls like Amit Sadh, Shveta Salve, Vikas Manaktala and Shabbir Ahluwalia waiting in the wings. Even the older and the experienced brigade has not given up as yet.

"Yes I'm willing to get into full fledged cinema. Now I have Delhii Heights and Shoot Out at Lokhandwala. My next will be Ali Baug. I have spoken to Mahesh Bhatt, Madhur Bhandarkar, Vikram Bhatt and my next venture would probably be with Soni Bhatt," says a hopeful Rohit Roy.

But then what Rohit will be play in these films will be either bit parts or character roles. Like what Mandira Bedi and Shweta Kawatra have done in all these years. And what Ejaaz Khan and Anita will play in Meghna Gulzaar's film Just Married.

So will a big TV actor ever be offered a full fledged Bollywood film? Will there ever be anyone else to hit gold in Bollwood after Shah Rukh Khan and even Irffan Khan?

Film critic Taran Adarsh tries to explain the situation. "Bollywood is a totally different ball game. It is very difficult for them to cope up with it. Film industry is completely star driven; people want to see stars, well known names.

Though I agree that some television actors, like Smriti Irani, are good actors but they have been confined to their characters.

Directors have a completely different mindset. They can be used in films but only as side character not in lead roles," he analyses.

So it can be said that the characters in TV are so very larger than life, that they completely overshadow the acting prowess that these stars have. Could it also be so that the over exposure on the tube has harmed them?

The audiences are so used to watching their favorite telly stars in their living rooms everyday, that they are not willing to spend big bucks to watch them on the big screen.

What do directors who make experimental cinema have to say? There is a perception that directors do not experiment with television actors and rather prefer to cast new faces in their films.

Homi Adajania the director of Being Cyrus, tries to answer the question. "At the end of the day it really depends on how talented the actor is. Though, the perception today seems to be that (more than the filmmakers) it is the audience that prefers keeping their soap actors and film actors apart.

Actually they are two different mediums that need to be approached very differently and also the fact that audience expectations are very different for film as opposed to television serials. You can't blame it on over exposure either because there would be a sense of curiosity to see what the TV actors do on the big screen.

Actually the format is very different, so the overall approach to a role would be different. I won't go into detail here as it will become a thesis in itself. TV actors are mostly cast in character roles because the producers often look at market trends and bankability and this would naturally narrow one's choices for lead protagonists," he argues.

Madhur Bhandarkar who is always known for experimenting with his cast has valid reasons to give too.

"I have cast TV actors in character roles in my films. But we always have to cast our leads keeping the pulse of the audience in mind. As far as I know, in TV, it's the writers that rule and there is not much of acting involved.

Where as in films it's not like that. There are few like Sandhya Mridul who has successfully dared to break away from the TV grind and has managed to carve a separate niche for herself with meaningful roles.

But it's good that Sandhya is in a league of her own and never really tries hard to become a big star," he says.

Ultimately, it's the talent that matters and it would be interesting to know whether the latest brigade of Bollywood hopefuls go the Sandhya Mridul way or actually create history (defying all trends) by being the next Shah Rukh Khan!! - Sneha Hazarika (SAMPURN)
