Vikas Mankatala: Fitness and Health

Vikas Mankatala who plays the very manly Hooda in Left Right Left tells us about his obsession with staying fit and just how he is making his way to being just like his fitness icon Sylvester Stallone.

Diet
I'm very diet conscious. I avoid fried foods, junk food and fatty foods. I don't have things which are full of ghee and butter and I try to keep away from sweets. I don't like eating food that has less salt in it- I can't stand it. I have an ice box in my vanity van where I make sure to keep coconut water which I sip on throughout the day. Coconut water is a very healthy drink. It keeps me fresh and fights against dehydration.

If there is one food I can't resist is Rajmah Chawal made by my mom. I eat everything which my mom makes. Whenever I go to Delhi she makes Rajmah Chawal especially for me.

My breakfast is like a king. My morning meal includes low calorie sandwiches made of brown bread, milk shakes and juices- I prefer spinach juice.

My lunch is like a queen. I like having chicken cooked in less oil. On Tuesdays and Thursdays I avoid chicken. I take milk and baked beans instead as it is very good for health. On these days I generally have vegetable soup with a lot of baby corn in it.

My dinner is like a beggar. My meal is very light. I like to have only juices at dinnertime and I mostly have Real Activ's mixed fruit juice.

I'm an exercise freak
Whenever I get the time from my shooting I go to the gym (Power House, Juhu) and work out. My work out lasts for about 45 minutes. In addition to this in my spare time I do warm up and abdominal exercises. I work out on my abdomen for about an hour and a half. I'm very proud of my upper body. I like my arm muscles and my abs though I feel that my calf muscles are not properly toned.

Vikas's Top 3 tips to a perfect body:
1. Avoid junk food
2. Eat Fruits
3. Work out everyday through minor exercises like swimming

Cadet Naina's rave party masti in Goa!

Cadet Naina (Priyanka Bassi) of Left Right Left went for a holiday with her mom and friends to Goa. And had more of a holiday that she expected! From buying herself a sexy gown for a throwaway price of Rs 3500 to helping a stranger buy a gift to attending a rave party, she has obviously had a blast!

Left Right Left had taken a season break for World Cup. Now once again whole old team has started shooting from last week.

Priyanka says, "I went to Goa for five days with my parents. This is my third trip to Goa. I went over there first time when I was in a school. So I couldn't remember much about that trip. Then second time I went there with my family with my mother, father and my siblings. Now I have grown up so enjoyed my third trip to Goa. I haven't seen all spots of Goa. My mum and my friends were there with me."

"I had never been to any rave party and I longed to experience at least one. So when I got to hear of one happening on the beach, my friends and I managed to get in, of course they were drinking and doing merry. But I don't drink. Neither do I like drinks. I just wanted to see how they enjoy the party. One of my friends had got an invite for it. There are lots of people in Goa who recognized me. Most of them used to come up and ask me "Are you Naina of Left Right Left?" Foreigners obviously didn't recognize me."

"Most of the youngsters recognized me. One day I was shopping for belts and then one guy was also shopping for belts. So he recognized me and asked me to select a belt for him, which he wanted to gift someone. So I selected a belt for him. Then he said that I'm lucky that you have selected belt for me."

"I have gone there by flight so journey was very good for me as I have reached there within an hour. I have bought a red one piece, which is very smart. I have paid Rs. 3500 for it. It was nice refreshing break for us."

"We have started shooting for Left Right Left again from last week. I was missing my whole team of Left Right Left. However one way or the other we were managing to catch up with each other. Soon Naina will be seen in a new mood and set up. My role is going to change completely.

A parna Tilak of the Left Right Left, is unhappy with the state of affairs of sports in India. And no, she's not talking about cricket. "The state government as well as individual sponsors fail to felicitate or encourage even gold medallists in other fields," says Tilak, whose hus- band, Dr Amod Tilak is an avid bad- minton player. A consulting urologist by profes- sion, Amod has represented Maha- rashtra for the last 16 years. A gold medallist in the 40-plus men's doubles in Melbourne and Kuala Lumpur and silver medal win- ner in Bulgaria, he currently holds the No 1 position with partner Milind Ghate in the world bad- minton ranking. "Despite balancing hectic sched- ules as a surgeon to winning gold medal for the country Amod had to , dig into his pocket to pay for his travel and stay So did his partner," . says Tilak. She claims they weren't even giv- en T-shirts with 'India' written on it when they went for the game. This year, the players can't go to defend their title since Ghate cannot afford to pay for his ticket. Ruing the fact that the Badminton Authority of India doesn't care, Tilak feels, "The government should allo- cate funds to other sports too, spe- cially those in which players are performing."

Post World Cup fiasco, SAB launches brand campaign

agencyfaqs!
MUMBAI, April 3

Following India's fiasco at the ICC World Cup, general entertainment channel SAB has seemingly pulled up its socks. The channel has launched a brand campaign revolving around the concept of 'New India', in order to usher in its next batch of fiction shows in lieu of the World Cup. Since SET India took over the channel in 2005, this is the second time SAB is revamping its brand positioning. So, what prompted this re-launch?

Young boys accuse a man of being an old hag when he interrupts their game on the road
As the man accuses, "Buddhha Hoga Tera Baap!", the kid's father nearby reacts angrily
A fight on the road ensues, as each man's father accuses the other guy's dad of being 'old'
The argument continues
All those who are 'young at heart' don sporty outfits. Super and voice-over, "Mera Bharat Mahaan"
Super: Watch out for 30th April
"It's not exactly a re-launch; it's more of a consolidation of something we started around six months ago," says Vikas Bahl, senior vice-president and business head, SAB. At that point, SAB had altered its programming line-up to appeal to the youth and the young-at heart, with shows such as 'Left Right Left' and 'Mohalla Mohabbat Walla'.

SAB gave these two shows, along with others such as 'FIR' and 'Yes Boss', a season break when it won the rights for the World Cup. Come April 30, these shows will be back for their respective second seasons. The channel also plans to release two new shows, 'Love Story' (a la 'Gangster' on the small screen) and 'Rockstars' (a journey of four friends), on the same day. These two will be Monday-Friday primetime shows.

To bring about its programming changes, SAB has launched a campaign conceived by Leo Burnett, which addresses the demographic and psychographic aspects of 'New India'. The campaign has been titled 'Mera Bharat Jawaan', which, according to Bahl, is symbolic of the demographic reality that the youth comprise 60 per cent of India. The second leg to the campaign, titled 'Buddha Hoga Tera Baap', is reflective of the psychographic mindset of being young at heart. A TVC and outdoor campaign for the latter have already been launched. The commercial shows young boys referring to a middle-aged man as 'buddhha khoosat' (old nag), to which the man responds angrily, "Buddha hoga tera baap (Who are you calling old? If anyone is old, it is your dad)!" The dad, standing nearby, overhears this and repeats the words to the other man. A vicious cycle follows, with each one accusing the other of being old, and denying their own age.

The campaign is deliberately tongue-in-cheek and irreverent, to add to the whole 'funky youth' feel.

The second phase of the campaign will be more programming specific, announcing the second season of SAB's old shows as well as the launch of its new ones. Bahl feels the brand campaign is reflective of a progressive India, and also the channel's progressive programming.

It is obvious that SAB had to launch this campaign now, post India's no-show at the ICC World Cup, as it needed to speedily put things back in place. However, Bahl insists that the timing of the campaign has nothing whatsoever to do with Team India's collapse. "The World Cup has, in fact, helped us increase our distribution by 25 per cent so far," he says, "which will even help us secure eyeballs for sampling our new programming mix."

Wooing The Audience...
[28 Dec 2006]

Intelligent, vivacious and always willing to speak her mind, Shveta Salve has finally arrived in the hearts of the viewers, who have stayed hooked to their television sets, week after week, watching the svelte, dusky beauty take the stage with her choreographer, Longi, in Jhalak Dikhhla Jaa. Popular Mona Singh may have walked away with the final prize, but Shveta's fans have touted that as far as grace and technique is concerned, Shveta can give any dancer a run for his/her money. In this tte--tte, Shveta says…

For Shveta Salve, "Jhalak Dikhhla Ja," means…

Sanjay Leela Bhansali likens me to dancing icon, Madhuri Dixit. Farah Khan tells me I'm a star and the gorgeous Shilpa Shetty thinks I'm an amazing dancer… all very heady! But honestly speaking, I am just a simple dal chawal girl from Chembur, a suburb in Mumbai. I am Shveta Salve, model, actor and now thanks to the popularity of my reality show on Sony 'Jhalak Dikhhla Jaa', a dancer…

Family life

My dad is a retired pilot from Air India and my mum still works with Air India. I have a brother, Sharvil, who is nine years younger than me. Ours is a simple middle class Maharashtrian family. In fact, we trace our roots to the kolis (fisher folks) and I am extremely proud of my lineage. Recently, when I performed a koli dance in 'Jhalak Dikhhla Jaa', I said exactly that on air and did what I always wanted to do — paid tribute to my clan. As a family, we are all very close and have always been there for each other.

Growing up

As a child, I was a complete tomboy —a complete outdoor kid who loved sports. I studied at the Loretto Convent in Chembur, an all-girls' school, and was extremely good in studies. I would take part in all the extra curricular activities in school and win prizes galore. My fondest memory is when I won an award as the captain of my sports house in the 10th standard. Of course, music and dancing were passions and I loved to dance Bollywood style in front of an audience

First recognition

After school, I got into Sophia College in Mumbai and that was an eye-opener! Here, I was dressed in usual collegiate garb, and there, the other girls were dressed in the finest designer threads. I think it was then that I grew up. I started noting fashion trends and styles. I grew my hair and started shaping my eyebrows — I had very bushy eyebrows — and generally took care of my appearance. And I ended up winning the college beauty pageant and became 'Miss Kaleidoscope'! Someone spotted me at the college campus and told me I should model.
I wasn't sure how I'd be accepted. I've never been discriminated against because of my skin colour. After all, dusky is alluring— it holds a lot of mystery while fair skin tends to look white in front of the camera.

First assignment

My first modelling assignment was the Lacto Calamine ad, and I loved the experience. After that, there was no looking back. I went on to do many ads. My mother then insisted that I take part in the 'Gladrags' mega model hunt ('99). But frankly speaking, I had my reservations, as I am not very tall. But still, I thought I'd give it my best shot and guess what, I bagged the runner's up position. That's when people in the industry woke up to the fact that there was someone 'promising' called Shveta Salve. More modelling offers started pouring in but I was choosy and picked only the best like Samsung, Kelloggs and Dulux Paints.

A tryst with theatre

It was during my modeling days, that my tryst with theatre happened, and I fell in love with it. I debuted in 'A Love Story', which was directed by eminent theatre personality Akhil Mishra. I was and still am strongly influenced by him and thanks to him I have learnt the nuances of acting. After that, I went on to do quite a few English and Hindi play.

In front of a film camera

While still dabbling in theatre, I did a cameo in a film called 'Pyar Mein Kabhi Kabhi'. I also did music videos. My first video – for singer Mehnaaz — earned me a meagre amount of Rs 800. But it was fun doing them. I then did a video for Karunesh, which was a huge hit. I also did one for Nitin Bali. After that, I started getting offers for 'item' numbers, but I refused them. I wanted a good repertoire of work. Though there were many offers in the pipeline, I really wasn't convinced about any of them.

Arriving on the small screen

My first break on TV was a two-episode role in 'Jaane Kahaan Mera Jigar Gaya Ji'. From there, I went on to bag other serials like 'Hip Hip Hurray', 'Sansar', 'Khamoshiyan Hai Kab Tak' and 'Dil Ko Kaise Samjahiye'. However, my serials 'Kittie Party' and 'Lipstick' were the ones that got me maximum mileage. I was a little apprehensive about doing 'Kittie Party' as I felt I would get lost amongst the numerous characters essayed by stars like Poonam Dhillon, Achint Kaur, Deepshikha and Maya Alagh. But producer Manish Sabharwal and Shobhaa De's faith in me convinced me to put my best foot forward. And it really turned out to be a blessing in disguise. 'Lipstick' was another serial that was close to my heart. I played Sunithi Verma, who is as focused and independent as I am in my real life. Unfortunately, there were certain misunderstandings between the producer Shristi Arya and me, and I had to opt out of 'Lipstick'. After 'Lipstick', I did 'Sarrkar' with Ronit Roy I am aware that people used to link Rohit and me. Off-screen, we're just friends and our families know each other. He is an incorrigible flirt but absolutely harmless! Currently, I am doing 'Left Right Left' with Rajeev Khandelwal and people tell us that we make an extremely good couple on screen.

Life in the television industry

There is a hierarchy here. Luckily, the treatment I receive now on the sets is much better than what I used to get some years ago. And I am proud to say that I have earned this respect by sheer hard work.

Living in with Rodney Barnes

People make a big deal out of my lifestyle. But I've never denied that I'm living in with my fianc Rodney for the last five years. Tomorrow, if I feel like having a baby out of wedlock, I will. It's my life! Rodney is into event management and is a great guy to be with. He has a great sense of humour, and no, we are still not ready to get married. Eventually, it has to happen, so why rush it?

The controversy surrounding her participation in "Jhalak Dikhhla Ja"

Let me set the record straight… Many people did question my presence in this show for non-dancers. They said that since I'm a trained dancer, I should not have been here. Well, let me tell them, I am not a trained dancer. I have never done salsa, rumba, or samba before this. Just because I move well, it doesn't make me a trained dancer. Luckily, I also got one of the most experienced choreographers – Longinus – to partner me in 'Jhalak…'When I dance, I let go of my inhibitions and have a blast, too bad if anybody has a problem with that. I enjoy what I do and it shows in my work.

Experience with Reality television

Reality television can be a little unsettling as every emotion shows on camera. There are no second takes. Like, when Akashdeep Saigal spoke out against the judges, and said that I may be a good dancer but I am not a good human being, it was aired as it was. That's okay with me… I am nobody to judge him.

  • Dealing with compliments

A top photographer once compared me to Continental cuisine. He said, I was bland in an advantageous way — I could blend well with anything! Today, I work hard to blend well with whatever I do. Everything I have done has been to reach the top. And mind you, I have enjoyed each step. Farah Khan told me that I am going to be a huge star. And I am going to strive to make it come true! But yes, I believe in God, destiny and my family, and I know with their support, I will touch greater heights. That's what I'd like to tell everybody; believe in yourself and your efforts will pay off…

Shveta returns from her US sojourn!

Left Right Left is on a seasonal break due to the World Cup telecast on SAB Sony. And taking full advantage of this unexpected holiday is the star cast. Just recently Aparna Tilak, Shveta Salve and Kunal Kapoor with friends had been on a sun, sand and sea spree to Goa, where they had a blast soaking in the beach, pool and binging on seafood.

No sooner did she return from her Goan jaunt then Shveta Salve went on a US trip. After her return from the US of A, she was in a relaxing mood, indulging in an oil massage, when we called her. "I went with my mom to Florida for a fortnight, to see my brother who is studying there," she said lazily.

And what did she do there besides enjoying the company of her younger sibling? "Just chilled out and shopped for basic girlie stuff," informs the pretty actor.

Shveta's popularity has soared after her mind blowing performances in Jhalak Dikla Ja on Sony in which she stood second and she has been getting a lot of offers to perform at functions. Grapevine says she and her boyfriend Rodney are on the look-out for a new, bigger apartment in Andheri.

    Tote-n-stroll indispensables

Women will be women! When on a move they have to have so many essentials in their handbag, given a peek one can decipher it's a home away from home.

Don't believe us? Let's unbuckle the carry bags of a few tellytown celebs. (Next time you find these ladies in your vicinity your scream for 'help' may just be answered in a jiffy.)

    Delnaaz Paul
: My handbag is real big one and you can say I carry the world in it. House-cupboard keys and my wallet are of course a must. Other paraphernalia include a writing pad, three or four coloured pens, a few envelopes, make-up and medical kit, hand sanitizers, sunglasses, a pocket calendar and family pictures. (Whew! A real Virgo woman!)

    Shradha Nigam:
I carry a huge purse that is home to everything other
than cash. I am invariably not good at remembering to carry money. I handover Rs.1000 - 2000 to my driver in order to bail me whenever need arises. Otherwise my handbag accommodates lip gloss, sunglasses, dental floss, tissues and pictures of Guru Govindji and Mother from Pondicherry ashram. Another must have is a water bottle since I drink it like a fish. (The lady's truly equipped for the dehydrating summers)

    Shveta Salve:
House keys, mobile and wallet are basics. Besides I always make it a point to carry a small bottle of perfume spray and hair scruncher so that even if I have to attend a social straight from my shoot, I can manage to smell good and combat the bad hair days. (No wonder she looks like a hot cake even after a grueling schedule)

Aparna Tilak: Lots of cosmetics as I like to be well-turned at any point of time. My handbag holds plenty of medicines too, not because I am a doctor's wife, but because I always feel what if I am stranded with an ache or uneasiness in a place where medications are not available. Imagine I even carry eye drops at any point of time. (Attention please, a quasi-doc on move!)

    Poonam Joshi:
The must-haves that go into my bag are lipgloss, moisturizer, mobile, my wallet and the book which I am reading at the moment. (KISS (keep it specific and simple) is her motto)

... while Shveta Salve gifts her baby...
    By: Tushar Joshi
    April 11, 2007

    Taking time off: Shveta Salve

Jhalak Dikhhla Jaa stunner Shveta Salve recently returned from an extensive holiday in America. She also took some time out to bond with her brother Sharvil.

Talking about her trip, she says, "Sharvil's studying in Florida and I really haven't been able to spend time with him.

I decided to join him on his spring break. We had loads of fun. He's doing a four-year degree course."

    Car seva

During her visit, Shveta gifted Sharvil a brand new sports car. "He loves cars and is a keen sports enthusiast.

He's also into gaming and a lot of creative stuff," she says.

    Boys and their toys: Sharvil;

"The car is an Accura Integra and is a two-door sports car. He was thrilled when he saw the car."

Sharvil turns 19 on May 30, so Shveta wanted to give him an early birthday present.

"I won't be with him then, so I thought it would be nice to surprise him while I was there."

On the work front, Shveta is busy with Left Right Left and stage shows.

Recently, there was a buzz that she had declined the offer to be part of the show's second season.

Rubbishing the rumour, she says, "I'm very much a part of LRL. In fact, I will be shooting for it soon."

    The Accura Integra

A huge fan of Goa, Shveta plans to make another trip to visit her favourite destination.

"I recently made a trip there with my friend Aparna (Tilak).

Now, I plan to make a trip to Goa in the coming weeks. It's the best place to go and unwind."

    Same old Hooda
    By: Vickey Lalwani
    April 14, 2007
    Main aisa hi hoon:
    Vikas Manaktala

While shooting for Tony and Deeya Singh's Left Right Left has begun and the show is set to return for its second season from April 30, Vikas Manaktala (aka Hooda) continues to be a pain for the unit on the sets.

    The brat

Vikas never missed an opportunity to throw his weight around in the show's first season, picking a fight with everyone from the spot boy to the dress designer, including his co-stars, except Priyanka Bassi whom he is dating.

On Wednesday, Vikas stopped the shooting at Chitrath Studio in Powai for nearly four hours because he was not satisfied with the clothes given to him.

Says a source from the production house, "Vikas has become unbearable. His behaviour on Wednesday was the limit.

He picked up a fault with the clothes approved by him. He came late on the sets, which is again not new, and simply refused to shoot until the clothes were done to suit his fancy.

No amount of cajoling helped and the entire unit could not save the situation. Shooting was supposed to start at 9 am, but the cameras could not roll till 3 pm."

When contacted, Anshuman Kishore Singh said, "I don't want to talk about Vikas," but added, "It is high time that actors become professional."

Vikas was cool when we called him. "The production people will be the best persons to tell you what happened.

The shoot did not halt only because of me. Everyone's clothes on the sets on Wednesday had a problem. I don't know why people keep complaining about me.
