Perhaps Shah Rukh Khan needs to be submerged in caffeine. A giant mug of the stuff with Karan Johar never too far out of range.
Khan -- far, far livelier than when on the hotseat, was the unquestioned highlight of Johar's return to television Koffee, in a crackling premiere episode which also featured Kajol and Rani Mukerji.
First Look: More Koffee, now with Mallika
Johar is a charming host, at least to his friends. Seeing as they're superstars, this makes for predictably interesting, sometimes repetitive, viewing. We've seen the gang before, and while they're never profound, their giggles reassure that they aren't even trying to be. These are stars luxuriating in the comfort of their own starry cocoons, slipping masks on and off with both disdain and a wink. It's all one big in-joke, and perfectly enjoyable -- if you like that sort of thing.
Kajol was overcompensatingly aggressive, lacing her answers with almost teenage defiance. Yet, the actress was infinitely preferable to her cousin Rani, an exquisite vision and utterly insipid. Johar was fun, as long as he wasn't talking about his own movies. But the show, as mentioned above, was the SRK-hour.
Khan -- who took one grave moment to wax intelligent on the inevitable need for the media and how the stars are as responsible as the tabloids -- was a barrel of suave laughs.
His characteristic candour and soundbyte-savvy wit was at its sharpest, never shy to bring himself down. Asked what he would do if he woke up and found he was Karan, the instant answer was that it'd be likelier for him to wake up with Karan. 'Let's keep the rumours alive,' he grinned.
Is it all an act, one may well ask. Sure, the questions seem easy and rehearsed, and Johar never tries to pry. Questions seem to have been agreed upon in advance, and one wouldn't really be surprised if the existence of scripts -- and dress rehearsals -- was revealed.
The real cattiness, however, comes from the lenses. As Johar has pointed out, his cameras are anything but intrusive, preferring to stay behind the slits of the set-wall and out of his guests' way.
'We want Ash-Abhishek on Koffee' | Your say?
This same factor also makes them potentially lethal, sniffing out stars who aren't quite sure when exactly they're being watched.
Add to that a mischievious edit, and we end up with Kajol telling Karan there's no Rani role she envies, while we see Rani visibly stiffening. Well done.
Overall, Koffee's a lark. You may feel you've seen it all before, but the meow Johar adds makes it work pleasantly enough. That, and a delicious SRK. Maybe he should co-host.
Koffee With Karan, Sundays, 9 pm on Star World and Star One. Next week: Hrithik Roshan and Priyanka Chopra.

He is truly a superhero in every which way... He's had the most rocking year in the business... He can dance. He can fly and boy... he can Dhoom... This Sunday meet the mega star Hrithik Roshan, who, from being termed as a 'superb actor' to now being termed as a 'sex symbol', has managed to replace every pin-up boy in the business and has emerged the hottest hunk, only on Koffee with Karan. |

New shows have been launching with such alarming frequency of late, that you need to be a confirmed couch potato to catch at least half of them. The best of last week's lot has been Filmy's Kaun Banega Champu, that not only does a brilliant job of spoofing KBC, but has also done a promo that takes off on the SRK promo for the original. Sunil Grover does a competent job of playing Ruk Ruk Khan, down to the last little mannerism (he needs work on that stuttering laugh, though). And Suresh Menon is expectedly brilliant as the assorted celebrities he is expected to play sitting on the 'pot seat' (the seats are actually designed as commodes with the flush tanks for back rests). This week, he was Sunjay Dutt as Munnabhai, pretending to have the Mahatma as his companion in the audience, and whipping out his revolver at every wrong answer. It was funny, witty without going over the top, although it can't get many marks for originality!
Koffee with Karan, on the other hand, was a tad bland. Kajol, Rani, Shah Rukh and Karan all seemed to have conferred earlier on the quips and witticisms that would make for sparkling conversation. If only Karan would move out of his comfort zone (Kajol, SRK...) and bring in some real candid conversation with film folks he may not be necessarily pally with, it would make for a real zinger...
Karamchand returned to screens after two decades, and no, he hadn't changed one whit. One wished he had, though. The deadpan expressions, the rude 'shut up, Kitty' et al are all in place, but they feel curiously dated. The story of a murdered laundry owner could have come straight out of the 1980s, with minor modifications. Audiences today are used to faster pace and smartly outfitted detectives. Star One's DON was somewhat like a latter day Karamchand, riding his bicycle and wearing his school boy satchel. Quirky, but clued in. Sadly, Karamchand seems caught in a time warp.
Shah Rukh Khan too slipped into his comfort zone when buddies Karan Johar, Farah Khan and others turned up to share the V Day KBC episode with him. The episode sparkled with SRK in his element and the participants being equally witty. Regular episodes the rest of the week just paled in comparison. One gets the funny feeling that SRK is tiring of playing the grand entertainer on the show, but is carrying on gamely, nevertheless....

Priyanka Chopra and Hrithik Roshan |
You'd have to be blind to miss the garam vibes between Hrithik and Priyanka on their Koffee with Karan rendezvous on Sunday night.
There were rumours about the pair during the making of Krrish, and from the looks of things the heat is still very much on!
A little birdie tells that us that Hrithik was 'flirting' with Priyanka deliberately to make her beau Harman Baweja jealous.
Apparently, he doesn't like Baweja Jr much after he called to quiz him about his relationship with PC at the height of the rumours. Ab aur kuch poochna baki hai, Harman?
