A li'l bitchier, KJO?

Karan Johar needs to serve stronger koffee, feels Anil Thakraney.

There is little doubt a cup of Koffee with Karan is quite seductive, and all of us die-hard addicts were faithfully back to the telly last night, as the host made his return after a gap of nearly two years, to serve us some more steaming cups of the good stuff.

Three reasons KJO is able to whip up a delectable brew. One, the filmmaker clearly loves gossiping about star lives in his spare time (how else would be in the loop on the wicked going-ons in Bollywood?). Two, Johar is very informal and buddy like in his hosting, so the guests are made to feel at ease, and they would trust a colleague infinitesimally more than they would a journo… a nice recipe for some candid conversation. And most importantly, a three-word text message from the mighty Karan is enough to get the stars rushing in to his kitchen, no one dares turn down Bollywood's power man. Which means getting hold of the creamy layer of stars is a cakewalk.

On the downside, our chatty host is best when he's in the company of his own 'club members', but struggles to survive a single cup when he has to share it with the 'outsiders'. Can never forget Koffee with Sunny Deol in the earlier series, all we heard from the angry Jat was a medley of duhs and grunts. And poor KJO dearly wished the ground beneath his feet opened up.

Last night's episode had, as expected, Karan's extended family in the house. Kajol was giggling hysterically as always. SRK was witty and funny as only he can be. And for some reason, Rani looked completely lost on the show, wonder why. Kajol, when not giggling, dissed the media for being too invasive, conveniently forgetting that the show she was sitting in on, at that very moment, is a flag bearer of filmi gossip and idle chatter. It was good to see SRK graciously accept the new mediascape that all of us are a part of. The rapid-fire round rocked, but I could smell it was 'fixed'. And getting in kids to comment on the stars was a warm gesture. So all well, the only ingredient missing was hot, hot masala, the koffe turned out a tad bland.

Dear Karan, one request: can you spice up the koffee a bit? Can we get Ash and Abhishek together? Even better, can we get Ash and Vivek together? And John and Salman? And Ash and Salman? And Salman and Vivek? Come on, you can do it, no one can decline KJO. Enough of light hearted banter, mate, can we get down to some serious bitching? Puleeeaze!

Perhaps Shah Rukh Khan needs to be submerged in caffeine. A giant mug of the stuff with Karan Johar never too far out of range.

Khan -- far, far livelier than when on the hotseat, was the unquestioned highlight of Johar's return to television Koffee, in a crackling premiere episode which also featured Kajol and Rani Mukerji.

First Look: More Koffee, now with Mallika

Johar is a charming host, at least to his friends. Seeing as they're superstars, this makes for predictably interesting, sometimes repetitive, viewing. We've seen the gang before, and while they're never profound, their giggles reassure that they aren't even trying to be. These are stars luxuriating in the comfort of their own starry cocoons, slipping masks on and off with both disdain and a wink. It's all one big in-joke, and perfectly enjoyable -- if you like that sort of thing.

Kajol was overcompensatingly aggressive, lacing her answers with almost teenage defiance. Yet, the actress was infinitely preferable to her cousin Rani, an exquisite vision and utterly insipid. Johar was fun, as long as he wasn't talking about his own movies. But the show, as mentioned above, was the SRK-hour.

Kajol, Shah Rukh Khan, and Rani Mukerji on the sets of Koffee with KaranKhan -- who took one grave moment to wax intelligent on the inevitable need for the media and how the stars are as responsible as the tabloids -- was a barrel of suave laughs.

His characteristic candour and soundbyte-savvy wit was at its sharpest, never shy to bring himself down. Asked what he would do if he woke up and found he was Karan, the instant answer was that it'd be likelier for him to wake up with Karan. 'Let's keep the rumours alive,' he grinned.

Is it all an act, one may well ask. Sure, the questions seem easy and rehearsed, and Johar never tries to pry. Questions seem to have been agreed upon in advance, and one wouldn't really be surprised if the existence of scripts -- and dress rehearsals -- was revealed.

The real cattiness, however, comes from the lenses. As Johar has pointed out, his cameras are anything but intrusive, preferring to stay behind the slits of the set-wall and out of his guests' way.

'We want Ash-Abhishek on Koffee' | Your say?

This same factor also makes them potentially lethal, sniffing out stars who aren't quite sure when exactly they're being watched.

Add to that a mischievious edit, and we end up with Kajol telling Karan there's no Rani role she envies, while we see Rani visibly stiffening. Well done.

Overall, Koffee's a lark. You may feel you've seen it all before, but the meow Johar adds makes it work pleasantly enough. That, and a delicious SRK. Maybe he should co-host.

Koffee With Karan, Sundays, 9 pm on Star World and Star One. Next week: Hrithik Roshan and Priyanka Chopra.

Karan Johar is the new 'hot male'

Filmaker Karan Johar is back on the small screen with his tele-show. However, after his first 'episode', KJ wasn't too happy that only a few friends and well-wishers called him up to tell him what a good job he had done. However, when he opened his email, he was overwhelmed with joy to see that it was up to capacity with back-patting praise mails. And Johar was glad to learn that he is still a 'hot male'.

He is truly a superhero in every which way... He's had the most rocking year in the business... He can dance. He can fly and boy... he can Dhoom...
</>

He is truly a superhero in every which way... He's had the most rocking year in the business... He can dance. He can fly and boy... he can Dhoom... This Sunday meet the mega star Hrithik Roshan, who, from being termed as a 'superb actor' to now being termed as a 'sex symbol', has managed to replace every pin-up boy in the business and has emerged the hottest hunk, only on Koffee with Karan.
The second guest is the super hot, very happening and truly the reigning queen of Bollywood, who's had the biggest blockbusters in her kitty. The charismatic Priyanka Chopra and her Krissh co-star Hrithik chat up with Karan this Sunday, February 18, at 9 p.m. on Star One and Star World!
Check out how Hrithik and Priyanka had a ball in the episode.
Excerpts from chat:
Karan: What's the sexiest compliment you have received?
Hrithik: Well, let me just say that there were these whole bunch of SMSes that I got, in which it was pretty clear that a lot of the girls said that they were very happy, a long way before the film had climaxed.
Karan: (interrupts) ...I know of a lot of women who went to see the film with their husbands or their boyfriends and there were very shattered husbands at the end of the film. And you managed to do that.
Hrithik: It should be something that should motivate them.
Karan: Would you call them detractors, the ones who turned around and said that Hrithik Roshan works only with his father? What would you call them?
Hrithik: Angels. If it weren't for them I don't think it would have added that little zing in my drive. So, fab. Thank you.
Karan: How's it been…the year...you have had two big hits. It's been a fantastic commercial year for you. Are you thrilled, happy, waiting to do more exciting work.
Priyanka: Yes. I am really looking forward to do some good work. It has been a fantastic year and more than anything my dad came back home this year. He was really unwell last year. That added just to the whole year.
Hrithik: You know. If anything ever happened to Krrish you can easily go ahead and make a super 'Krisshi'.
Karan: Because she is really a super girl.
Hrithik: She is crazy. She is a shocker.

'I love my dual persona'
By: Upala KBR
February 17, 2007

The guests on the second show of Koffee With Karan's second season are the lead pair of Krrish — Priyanka Chopra and Hrithik Roshan.

Here, the director talks about his favourite moments on the show, about gorging on goodies from the hamper and choosing SRK over everything else. Read on.

What's new about KWK ?

It has a thinner me (laughs), a new set, people in new combinations with lots of fun.

On the last episode, Kajol said SRK is your favorite. Comment.

Yes. I will always be partial to Shah Rukh. Even during Kuch Kuch Hota Hai, Kajol would complain that I was being partial to Shah Rukh as I would call her early before him.

This time, having the three of them on KWK was like going back to the KKKH days. It was lots of fun.

Did you have to act as a referee between Kajol and Rani?

No, not at all! I didn't have to get into that space. I had Shah Rukh to do that. He plonked himself right in the middle and managed them both. I am not the referee — I am the captain of the ship!

Have you ever been tempted to take the hamper home?

Yes and I have done it this time. I ate up all the cookies first and then ran an extra mile on the treadmill.

The hamper is much bigger than last time and has even an electronic gizmo from Apple. There are some lovely goodies like chocolates and biscuits too.

What do you enjoy and hate the most about KWK?

I love doing the show apart from the fact that I get paid for talking. The thing that I hate is staring at myself. I don't like looking at myself though seeing me posing all the time, you wouldn't believe that!

Which episode in the second season has touched your heart?

Sanju's (Sanjay Dutt with sister Priya) episode. Sanju's had such a tough life and endured so much and yet he always has a smile on his face.

There is something so endearing and emotional in him. It makes you want to reach out and give him a huge hug for the troubled times he has gone through.

Where's the Lie-O-Meter?

Yes it's very much there. Mad things happen during the Priyanka-Hrithik episode when they tell a lie!

The big moments on KWK?

Every episode. Getting Mallika Sherawat was a big moment. She and Sanjay Bhansali spoke so well. The SRK-Rani-Kajol one is also one of my favorites.

Then there's the one with 5 directors — Rakeysh Mehra, Rakesh Roshan, Raju Hirani, Kunal Kohli and myself where we all sat and chatted about films, the Jaya Bachchan and Hema Malini episode together. They are both such wonderful achievers and mothers….

What did you miss most about KWK when it was off air?

I didn't miss the show. I missed making movies, so I went back and made KANK. I am glad I did that and now I am looking for a film to make again.

I am currently in Los Angeles doing research for my next film. I love my dual persona and the fact that there is no stopping in life for me to take a break.

How does your mom (Hiroo Johar) find KWK?

She is very happy to see me on screen as she gets to stare at me for a whole hour. Both mom and me have one regret — that dad (Yash Johar) never lived to see KWK.

He was my biggest fan and was so proud of anything that I did. He would have loved KWK.

Have you had any awkward moments on KWK?

Darling, I have never been awkward in my life. I might have made people feel awkward but it's never me.

Your wishlist for KWK?

Aamir Khan, Madhuri Dixit, Sridevi…

k...K...K...all the way

(Courtesy:www.hindu.com)

New shows have been launching with such alarming frequency of late, that you need to be a confirmed couch potato to catch at least half of them. The best of last week's lot has been Filmy's Kaun Banega Champu, that not only does a brilliant job of spoofing KBC, but has also done a promo that takes off on the SRK promo for the original. Sunil Grover does a competent job of playing Ruk Ruk Khan, down to the last little mannerism (he needs work on that stuttering laugh, though). And Suresh Menon is expectedly brilliant as the assorted celebrities he is expected to play sitting on the 'pot seat' (the seats are actually designed as commodes with the flush tanks for back rests). This week, he was Sunjay Dutt as Munnabhai, pretending to have the Mahatma as his companion in the audience, and whipping out his revolver at every wrong answer. It was funny, witty without going over the top, although it can't get many marks for originality!

Koffee with Karan, on the other hand, was a tad bland. Kajol, Rani, Shah Rukh and Karan all seemed to have conferred earlier on the quips and witticisms that would make for sparkling conversation. If only Karan would move out of his comfort zone (Kajol, SRK...) and bring in some real candid conversation with film folks he may not be necessarily pally with, it would make for a real zinger...

Karamchand returned to screens after two decades, and no, he hadn't changed one whit. One wished he had, though. The deadpan expressions, the rude 'shut up, Kitty' et al are all in place, but they feel curiously dated. The story of a murdered laundry owner could have come straight out of the 1980s, with minor modifications. Audiences today are used to faster pace and smartly outfitted detectives. Star One's DON was somewhat like a latter day Karamchand, riding his bicycle and wearing his school boy satchel. Quirky, but clued in. Sadly, Karamchand seems caught in a time warp.

Shah Rukh Khan too slipped into his comfort zone when buddies Karan Johar, Farah Khan and others turned up to share the V Day KBC episode with him. The episode sparkled with SRK in his element and the participants being equally witty. Regular episodes the rest of the week just paled in comparison. One gets the funny feeling that SRK is tiring of playing the grand entertainer on the show, but is carrying on gamely, nevertheless....

Hrithik luurves to live in the moment

Priyanka Chopra and Hrithik Roshan

You'd have to be blind to miss the garam vibes between Hrithik and Priyanka on their Koffee with Karan rendezvous on Sunday night.

There were rumours about the pair during the making of Krrish, and from the looks of things the heat is still very much on!

A little birdie tells that us that Hrithik was 'flirting' with Priyanka deliberately to make her beau Harman Baweja jealous.

Apparently, he doesn't like Baweja Jr much after he called to quiz him about his relationship with PC at the height of the rumours. Ab aur kuch poochna baki hai, Harman?

'Bhansali surprised Mallika'

By Subhash K Jha

Besides Mani Rathnam's Guru, if one has to find a common link between Aishwarya Rai and Mallika Sherawat it would have to be Sanjay Leela Bhansali. During last season's Koffee With Karan, Sanjay appeared with Aishwarya.

This season he'll be seen with Mallika Sherawat. The totally unforeen pairing happened on when the enterprising Karan shot another episode of Koffee with Bhansali and Sherawat.

Says a member of the tightly-knit crew. "At the first the two were wary of each other, and rightly so. What could there be in common between them? Luckily, Karan's characteristic affability soon put them at ease.

Mallika was obviously awestuck …and nervous. Sanjay put her at ease by telling her he was a far cry from his sober serious image and that he loved having fun."

Once the camera was switched on the thressome had a ball. Repartees flew fast and furiously. "Sanjay surprised Mallika by telling her he always found her to be one of the most promising new discoveries, though she needed to work on her voice modulation. He also gently reminded her to get back to earth when she spoke about her superiority complex."

Apparently the vibes on the sets were ribtickling with the two super-filmmakers often laughing uproariously at Mallika's selfdeclarations.

Divulges the source, "At one point Mallika high-handedly declares that she would like the three Khans Shah Rukh, Aamir and Salman to serve her meals. And when Karan cockily asks her which hero's butt she likes best, Mallika changes the topic to female butts and declares she likes Bipasha butt best."

Butt, seriously.

When asked about this extremely unorthox tete-a-tete featuring the genius filmmaker and the femme fatale, Karan laughed, "I don't know who gives you all this information. But yes, we did shoot with my favourite filmmaker and and one of the sexiest actresees. It was great fun.

As I said earlier I don't only want to bring on unusual and exciting guests, I want to bring them on in unexpected combinations. I believe opposites make sparks fly. Watch out for the fireworks this season on Koffee With Karan."

Ganguly to have 'Koffee with Karan'
Qaiser Mohammad Ali [Friday, February 23, 2007]

New Delhi, Feb 24 (IANS) Star cricketer Sourav Ganguly could soon become the first non-film personality to be having "Koffee with Karan", a popular chat show hosted by filmmaker Karan Johar.

The episode featuring former India captain Ganguly, who is on a much talked about comeback trail, could be recorded before he leaves with the team to the West Indies for the World Cup March 1, said reliable sources.

Johar has already announced that he would be inviting non-film personalities in the second season of the chat show but has not disclosed any names.

The sources told IANS that Johar and Ganguly met not long ago and the filmmaker told him that he would be inviting him to feature in his programme.

"When the two met, possibly for the first time, they exchanged mobile numbers and Johar told him that he would be inviting non-film personalities to his show," said a close aide.

"Ganguly agreed to Johar's idea, and he could be seen talking to him over a cup of coffee on the sets."

Ganguly made a comeback to the national team after 10 months when he joined the squad in South Africa late last year, and has been performing consistently since. His success has again raised his profile, with sponsors who had deserted him reportedly seeking to sign him again.

Ganguly, now 34, has amassed 10,470 runs in 286 one-day internationals at an average of 41.22 and 5,435 in 91 Tests at 40.86. He has also hit 22 centuries in one-dayers and 12 in Test matches.

Madame M says, 'Stay away!'
By: Tushar Joshi

Mallika Sherawat with Sanjay Leela Bhansali on Koffee With Karan
Mallika Sherawat's starry tantrums on the sets of her films are not unknown.

But the last thing we expected the diva to do was make a spectacle of herself on the sets of Koffee with Karan.

The unofficial brand ambassadress of the show (she was a hot favourite with last season's male guests) makes an appearance with director Sanjay Leela Bhansali on Sunday on Star World.

Poor guest

Sources from the show reveal that Madame M put up a 'Do Not Disturb' signboard on her door. "She wasn't keen on people walking into her
green room. She wanted to have some privacy and chill out before the shoot began.

So much so, that she carried her own DND sign and hung it outside her door!"
Mallika also refused to shoot for behind-the-scenes portions, something that's a regular on the chat show host's To-Do list. Says the source, "She wasn't comfortable with the candid shots and refused to co-operate.

Till date, every other guest on the show has readily shot for this." During her conversation with Karan, Mallika actually admitted that she has a superiority complex and apologised to him for having kept him waiting to have her on the show for a whole year.

"She was in great spirits once the camera started rolling and gave some terrific repartees to Karan's questions."

Quote me!

Last season, her statement on being a huge fan of Amitabh Bachchan's running on screen became a talking point with all the guests. "This time, she admitted that apart from Mr Bachchan she loved the way Saif runs
on screen.

She was also disappointed that Abhishek didn't get a chance to run with her in Guru," says the source.

Famous for shooting from the hip with infamous quotable quotes ('Men don't talk to me, they talk to my breasts'), Karan asked Mallika to come up with a new quote on the show. "After thinking for some time she came up with, 'Every generation has an expression, and I am the expression of this generation'."

Err… right then.

(Interestingly, the winner
of Karan's Koffee hamper wasn't Sherawat but Bhansali.)
