Star brews fresh season of Koffee with Karan
By Businessofcinema.com Team
(19 January, 2007)
MUMBAI:Karan Johar returns to the small screen next month with a fresh season of his weekly celebrity chat show Koffee with Karan.
Star India will telecast the entire series simultaneously on Star One and Star World, starting 11 February at 9 pm. The guest list this time round, will not be restricted to the entertainment industry, but will also feature names from the sports and corporate world.
"It's great to be back. I have tried to make the show more irreverent, more tongue-in-cheek, more fun and I am sure everyone will have fun watching it. The guests on my show will include a lot of my friends from the first season, but in unusual combinations and will also feature big names from the corporate and sports world," says Johar.
About the guests, Johar says, "Some of the celeb-combos this season will be the trio of Kajol, Rani and Shah Rukh in the opening episode, which I will shoot tomorrow (20 January). The Krrish jodi of Priyanka and Hrithik, Mira Nair and Tabu who worked together in The Namesake, Sanjay Dutt and Priya Dutt, :) Kapoor, Kareena and Karisma, John and Bipasha, Jaya Bachchan and Hema Malini who are both MPs and homemakers, Vijay Mallya and Shobha De."
Johar says he has introduced interesting concepts and celeb combos this time, like shooting his first ever solo celeb chat with Richard Gere, and a combo featuring unusual combinations like Mallika Sherawat and Sanjay Leela Bhansali.
Saif-Rosa heading for splitsville?
The couple is allegedly going through serious problems. And, although they had committed to appearing together on Koffee with Karan, they cancelled their appointment

Shattered? Saif with Rosa
If sources close to Saif Ali Khan and Rosa, his girlfriend of about two years, are to be believed, the couple are heading down splitsville. "This time the fights are really bad and they are having some serious problems," says a friend. "It doesn't look like the relationship will last for too long."
Saif and Rosa had made a commitment to appear together on Karan Johar's chat show, Koffee with Karan, long ago. That was obviously in rosier times. Since then, the relationship seems to have undergone a change. For, a few days ago, when Karan was all set to shoot the episode with Saif and Rosa, he received a call saying that the couple had changed their mind and would not be appearing together on the show.
The buzz goes that Saif will probably appear on the show by himself. The shooting, for the meantime, has been postponed.
Saif and Rosa went on a holiday to celebrate the coming of the New Year to Verbier, in Switzerland, along with Saif's children, Sara and Ibrahim. Reportedly, it is there that the two began having serious fights over various issues. Things only worsened after they returned. And, though they did attend an award function together last Saturday, speculations are rife that they are on the verge of a break-up.
The couple have had a history of fights, anyway. Once the cameras are switched off, they have often been seen fighting bitterly in public. Earlier in the year, they were reported to have had such a huge fight that Rosa was hospitalised soon after. When we contacted Rosa, she refused to comment on the issue. When we specifically asked if they were refusing projects together, she said, "I don't think so."
Meanwhile, friends say that Saif has suddenly become completely inaccessible to them. "It obviously points to the fact that they are having serious problems this time," says a friend. "He wants time alone to sort things out in his own mind."

Karan Johar is back, and as the self-confessed gossip hound readies for a new season of Koffee With Karan, the Mumbai press was invited to check out the host in his new surroundings, talking about season 2.
To be cast on Star World and Star One simultaneously, the show is on Sunday nights at 9, starting February 11.
Star TV COO Sameer Nair filled the chair next to Karan's, laughing about how the show came to be. "We went to hire an anchor, and ended up getting a producer, director, set designer, guest coordinator, writer and stylist."
"Yes, I'm overworked and underpaid," retorted Johar.
About season 2, Johar wants to dispel rumours of 'difference.' "There isn't any! We didn't want to change what worked so well. We've developed a chatty, catty conversational manner and we want that comfort level to stay."
The director then rattled off an enviable guest list -- Sanjay and Priya Dutt, Saif and Soha Ali Khan, John Abraham and Bipasha Basu, Kareena and Shahid Kapoor, Mira Nair and Tabu, Vijay Mallya and Shobha De, and Sholay ladies Hema Malini and Jaya Bachchan. Outside of this lot, the show kicks off with a return to Kuch Kuch Hota Hai episode with Shah Rukh Khan, Kajol and Rani Mukerji.
And then there are the special episodes. Karan's filmed a one-on-one episode with Richard Gere, but the biggest expectations are from a show he shot just last night. "She was last year's unofficial brand ambassador for the show, and was the star of the season without even coming on. So this time we have Mallika Sherawat on the show, and it's explosive." The actress was accompanied by director Sanjay Leela Bhansali, and Karan assures us they shared great, energetic chemistry.
Karan described the new set, designed by Sharmistha Roy, as "like an American loft, in Greenwich Village or Soho in New York." If so, it's a startlingly clean loft. He also drew attention to the fact that there are slits in the walls for the cameras, so they aren't really visible when the episodes are filmed -- letting the celebs breathe in relatively lens-free air makes them more at ease.
Johar, who has also turned dress designer for Shah Rukh Khan's KBC ("I went up to Star and asked for the job") met the actor just the other day. "It's amazing that both of us film folks were driving to different studios to shoot two shows -- but for the same channel." His friendship with King Khan is the stuff of legend, and Karan candidly revealed that "Shah Rukh is the only person whose counsel I seek. And that's who I went to when I first decided to do season one."
The show's tagline now is 'love me, hate me, but you can't ignore me,' prompting a journalist to ask who Karan thinks hates him. "Oh, I am hated. Plenty of people don't like me, or the kind of films I make. People who make gritty thrillers don't like my films," Karan winked. A question about Ram Gopal Varma follows, and Johar is quick to say he'd love to have Ramu on the show. "We should do a one-on-one. I bet we have a lot to talk about."
"The great advantage for me as a host is that these stars pick up my calls and reply to my messages, and it wouldn't be that easy for any other host," admitted Karan. And what's the difficult part? "Well, it's difficult sitting with friends in a semi-formal sitting and asking them questions where you know the answers, and trying not to act too surprised when they're lying," he laughs. "Sometimes it can be an eye-opener, though."
Does he expect his conversations to be stimulating? "No, they're not stimulating at all. They're not meant to be. We want them to be fun, flippant and frivolous. We expect you to turn in on a Sunday night, wanting something light and refreshing." So isn't doing the show largely with celebrity friends restricting? "Yes, I am restricting myself, but then that what I do with my movies too."
The rest of the queries were about possible guests. Aditya Chopra? "You wouldn't even know what he looks like! No, we're best friends and I wouldn't want to intrude on his privacy." Sourav Ganguly? "We have spoken about it and he'd love to, but the World Cup dates clash with our shooting schedule and for India's sake, I hope he doesn't make it back early." Salman Khan? "Oh, I'll ask him and ask him and ask him, and finally I'll plead, but it would be great to have Sallu up here, with his family, Sohail and Arbaaz."
The question was just impossible to resist. Given the current media frenzy, what about getting Aishwarya Rai and Abhishek Bachchan? Aren't they the most talked about couple? "Yes," Karan laughs. "Maybe they're too talked about to be on the show."
Touche, talkshow man.

Coffee, Cakes and Karan! Yashraj Studio was filled with the aroma of hot coffee and cakes. It set the tone of the press conference for Koffee with Karan, held this evening to announce the return of the popular chat show's second season. Filmmaker-cum-chat show host Karan Johar along with Star Channel's CEO Sameer Nair spoke to the press about the new season of the show. Karan was as usual ready with his quick answers with his tongue-in-cheek humour, "Since Mallika Sherawat was so present in the first season of the show, (everyone had spoken about her), I have her on the show with Sanjay Bhansali". When asked if Abhishek and Aishwarya the most-talked about couple would come on his show, "They are too talked about so we will not talk about them." All his celebrity friends like Kajol, Rani, Shah Rukh Khan. Hrithik, Kareena, Shahid, Karisma and a host of stars will come to have coffee with Karan. The show will be telecast from 11 February at 9 PM on STAR One and STAR World. www.indya.com |

what's common between best buddies Karan and Shahrukh, besides the fact that both will soon be seen as hosts on the small screen. Well, we think both have the gift of the gab and good PR skills to keep an audience rolling in abundance. frustrated actor(as he calls himself) was seen in his element as gave us a sneak peek into his ultra popular chat show. This time around, the show which will go on air on 11 Feb will be seen on Star World and Star One as well. Here's a quick rapid fire round with the man himself. Frankly, the show is very casual, easy, candid, fun and stress free. It's almost like a lounge chat on flippant issues and the good thing is that I don't intrude on the privacy of my guests. On one level, it does work to my advantage that as friends, I know exactly what's going on in their minds. With some celebs it's a nostalgic trip, since I've grown up watching their films since childhood. www.tellychakkar.com |

Rani and Kajol to have coffee with Karan
Does this mean the two cousins are on talking terms again?
Ram Kamal Mukherjee
The buzz is that Karan Johar has roped in Rani Mukherji and Kajol for the first episode of his much talked-about show Koffee With Karan. Karan is planning to start shooting for the first episode from January. Kajol will be seen sharing screen space with Rani after Kuch Kuch Hota Hai.
A sources close to Karan reveals, "Karan wanted Rani and Kajol together for his first season, but they were not on talking terms, so his plan didn't materialise. Finally, Karan had to work out some other combinations to get them both." Now, it seems that Rani and Kajol have agreed to be on the show. "Karan wanted to start his second season with people he is most comfortable with. He started his career as a film maker with Kuch Kuch Hota Hai, and after nine years they will be sharing screen space together again," says our source.
Not just that, Karan will also get Shah Rukh Khan as a special guest in the show. SRK will be talking about his on-screen chemistry with both sisters.
After Kuch Kuch Hota Hai, magazines and glossies wrote about Kajol's rift with Rani. Although they are cousins, it was reported that Kajol treated Rani badly on the sets. "Karan wanted to clear the air and it took him a year to convince Kajol to come on the show. Although Kajol is very fond of Karan, she didn't want to do the show with Rani. But Karan's show is all about fun and spice. He wanted both of them to share screen time and chat like sisters," says our source.
Apparently, Karan is working on the rapid fire round which has always been the highlight of his show. The idea of getting SRK for his first episode came to his mind, when both the sisters agreed to be part of the show. "Shah Rukh shares an amazing chemistry with Kajol in Kuch Kuch Hat Hai, while he is brilliant with Rani in Kabhie Alvida Naa Kehna. Karan had enough reasons to ask Shah Rukh," says our source.
When we contacted Rani's mother Krishna who is in Kolkata, she said, "Yes Rani will do the show for Karan, but I can't confirm about Kajol or Shah Rukh. You'll have to ask Rani about that." We tried to get in touch with Rani and Shah Rukh, but both of them were unavailable for comment.
