Size matters!

Karan Johar's coffee hamper promises to be 'bigger and better' this time...

While the format of Koffee with Karan 2 will remain the same, one thing that has definitely grown in stature this time, is the 'coffee hamper'.

That's a huge jump from last time's hamper which had cookies, coffee-beans and coffee powder, a coffee mug and a small coffee maker in it. Looks like Karan wasn't kidding when he said the coffee hamper is now "bigger and better".

Says a source in the channel, "Karan wanted the hamper to be really exclusive this time. He has chosen all its contents personally, right from the ipod to the cheese. He wants it to be a personal memento from him."

Goodies reloaded

So, for all the celebrities who had let out their closely-guarded secrets on the show the last time, only to discover its rather humble contents, this time the coffee hamper will contain:

• An iluv dvd player with i-pod station (7-inch screen)
• Frazer and Haws crystal and silver coffee mugs
• 15 piece assorted cookie box (specially made for the show by the Grand Hyatt)
• 18 piece handmade assorted chocolate box (specially made for the show by the Grand Hyatt)
• Granapadano Agriform cheese
• Grisbi cream cappuccino wafers
• Mocha Expresso sauce from stonewall kitchens
• Lavazza Expresso coffee blend, and last but not the least-
• Freshly baked cinnamon bread sticks!

Love him or hate him", screams the tagline of the show. Karan Johar is back this season with another exciting innings of his celebrity chat show Koffee With Karan starting February 11 at 9 pm on Star One and Star World. "No one brews coffee and conversation like Karan does. We were unsure about what Karan will come up with this season, since he is a producer, director, actor, designer an anchor, all rolled into one.

This time he has exciting topics with new people and new looks," says Star Entertainment India CEO Sameer Nair. According to Karan, "Sameer and I have a great association. What started as a hobby for me turned out to become a popular show. It has increased my brand value and people are coming and watching my movies because of it. I have not changed anything with the show. This time, we have a hidden camera since that will make my friends more comfortable. The show continues to be about chatty and candid conversations, only the sets have been changed and it looks more like a Greenwich village that has been designed by Sharmista Chatterjee. The hamper has become bigger and I have grown two years older too."

The show continues to bring together interesting combinations of personalities. Family combinations like Sanjay Dutt with his sister Priya, Saif Ali Khan and sister Soha, love birds like John Abraham and Bipasha Basu, and Shahid and Kareena along with an appearance by sister Karisma will be on the show. Interesting combinations of personalities like Vijay Mallaya and Shobhaa De, and Mallika Sherawat with Sanjay Leela Bhansali.

"Though Mallika and Sanjay have nothing in common, it was one of the most interesting episodes since Mallika was at her very best and was looking good too. She also gave most of her quotable quotes. I also have shot an episode with Richard Gere, but he is a solo guest since he had so much to say," says the filmmaker.

The opening show will have Shah Rukh Khan, Kajol and Rani Mukherji since Karan worked with them in his first film Kuch Kuch Hota Hai. "What was more interesting is the fact that both Shah Rukh and I are hosting two different shows this season and driving off to two different studios at the same time," smiles Karan.

When asked how easy or difficult it was for him to ask questions since most of them are his friends, Karan replies, "It is difficult when the cameras are rolling and most of the times, I know the answers and still have to keep a straight face when I know that they are not telling the truth and at times, it's an eye-opener too. Like the episode with Raj Kumar Hirani. Some of his answers were eye-openers. I will also be having interesting episodes with television personalities like Ekta Kapoor, and am planning to rope in Sourav Ganguly as well since I met him recently."

It has been confirmed that the first episode of Koffe With Karan Season II will be starring - Kajol and Rani Mukherjee. Karan has started the shooting of this first episode and says there is also a surprise guest in this first episode of new season. After numerous speculation in the media, finally we got it from horses mouth that the guest will be none other than his first love - Shah Rukh Khan.

It was in Kuch Kuch Hota Hain these two stars shared same screen space. Thereafter both Kajol & Rani had a blink and miss kinda guest roles (together) and hardly they shared same screen in all of Karan's movies. Its been said, that Kajol & Rani were not in talking terms, but for the sake of this episode they are sharing same screen space after nine years. Getting out more from Karan, he says

Karan wants Rakhi on KwK!

Move over Shah Rukh Khan, there's another item sensation threatening to take over Karan Johar's affections! Apparently, the filmmaker is sooo taken in by item girl-turned-reality TV-star Rakhi Sawant, that he's really upset about her eviction from Bigg Boss this week.

Says Karan, "I was sad to see her go as I was really rooting for her to win. She's so funny and so entertaining.

But on the flip side, I'm glad she's out as I can now invite her for some gup on Koffee with Karan. I can tell you for a fact that it will be my best episode ever!"

We second that, KJo!

RGV to sip Koffee with Karan
By IndiaFM News Bureau, January 23, 2007 - 08:31 IST
The second season of Koffee with Karan promises to give an extra dose of fun, entertainment and candid conversation. It will have some unique combinations and the most interesting thing about the show is its guest list that which has a new addition, filmmaker Ram Gopal Varma.

Yes, RGV has accepted Karan Johar's invitation to be the guest on his show. He will appear in the third schedule of the show which is in April, as a solo guest. According to Karan, both of him and Ramu are very irreverent and have a tongue-in-cheek style of talking. Due to this there had been a war of words between the two, but Karan says that it has been blown out of proportion and in reality, there is no bad air between the two.

It can be recalled that RGV once made a statement saying that watching a Karan Johar film is like watching a horror movie. In fact, it was from that point that the whole so-called war between the two filmmakers began. However, things seem to be pretty cool now. When asked what would Karan gift to RGV. He replies, a gift hamper of his film DVDs, so that Ramu can be horrified all year long. Now, that would be an episode to watch out for.

Karan shoots Koffee with Konkona, Kunal and Riteish
By Subhash K. Jha, January 29, 2007 - 02:03 IST

In what promises to be the zaniest and youngest instalment of Koffee with Karan, the host Karan Johar brought together Konkona Sen-Sharma, Kunal Kapoor and Riteish Deshmukh for an episode shot earlier this week.

Says Karan, "That's the first episode I shot for my second season on Sunday. It's my 'Class of 2007'. I've come back to Koffee with Karan after a year-and-a-half. The set this time is far better than the first time. I'm doing what I do best, serve coffee piping hot. Konkona, Kunal and Riteish were loads of fun. Konkona had come on the show earlier. So she was the veteran on the episode. Everyone now comes a little guarded since they're aware of the format. But you know, the show is supposed to be fun. I've a sense of humour. I hope my guests have it too. I can poke fun at myself. No one should take themselves seriously on the show."

Also on the anvil are episodes with Hrithik-Priyanka. But the first episode is scheduled to have Rani Mukherjee, Kajol and Shah Rukh Khan. That's expected to be shot soon. Karan would also like to get the three Kapoor brothers Randhir, Rishi and Rajiv together. "I always enjoy the veterans more than the youngsters. I had so much fun with Hema and Zeenat's episode."

Koffee with Karan goes on air next month.

Karan's back on the coffee table

Diganta Guha

Kolkata, February 1, 2007

"Did you watch Salaam-e-Ishq?" filmmaker Karan Johar is curious to know whether we liked his performance in former assistant Nikhil Advani's recently released film.

The length is a problem (3.35 hours), we inform him. "Yes I know, they should cut it down," says Karan. That should put to rest all speculation of a Karan-Nikhil rift.

He is in no mood to cut short the conversation on Nikhil, who directed Kal Ho Na Ho. But we are keen to chat about his talk show, Koffee With Karan, that's back on Star World on February 11.

Karan says that he will be more relaxed on the second leg. The first leg being a success, is Karan feeling the pressure? "I have lost two kilos doing the show," he says jokingly, adding on the same note, "Sequels in Bollywood are working and I hope my show, too, meets with success."

More seriously, Karan says that this time around there will be more energy on the show and that's what people can look forward to since they are already aware of the format.

"I am also a little more easy in front of the camera. I was a bit stiff before if I may be critical about myself," he says candidly.

Karan is back with his show around the same time Shah Rukh Khan is doing Kaun Banega Crorepati. Quite a coincidence, isn't it Karan? "Yeah! It's quite funny. Both of us have worked so much together and now we are going to two different TV studios for two different shows, fortunately for the same media group, Star," answers Karan.

As ever he is ready to support Shah Rukh, this time over the comparison with Bachchan. "You really can't choose between legends. Shah Rukh is being himself — endearing and funny — winning the hearts of millions," he says and rubbishes claims that he's sandwiched between Shah Rukh and Bachchan over a rift between the two.

"I have my own relationship and affection for everybody. Amit uncle is a father figure to me and Shah Rukh is like a brother," he says. Coming back to the show, Karan says the interesting combination of guests will be one of the USPs.

The first episode, he informs, will be with Shah Rukh, Kajol and Rani Mukerji — "It was very emotional since they starred in my debut film Kuch Kuch Hota Hai nine years ago. And Mallika Sherawat with Sanjay Leela Bhansali — two people with different backgrounds who have nothing in common should lead to tremendous amount of energy," says Karan whose other guests include Kareena Kapoor, Shahid Kapoor and Karisma Kapoor and Richard Gere.

Rapid Fire round with Karan Johar

1. Amitabh or Shah Rukh as KBC host: You don't choose between legends
2. Abhishek-Rani or Abhishek-Ash on screen: Abhi-Ash I thought they were fantastic in Guru
3. Kajol in Dushman or Preity Zinta in Kya Kehna: Kajol in Dushman
4. Cast of Kuch Kuch Hota Hai remake: The same cast (they are still so young and look so superb)

Koffee, KBC & Karan

Roshmila Bhattacharya
Posted online: Friday, February 02, 2007 at 0000 hours IST

Even without a steaming cuppa in hand, Karan Johar makes great coffee... Oops!.. copy.

This time too he came up tops as he fielded queries on friend Shah Rukh Khan's KBC wardrobe that has been designed by him, his talk show that is set for a second season, his partnership with NDTV and other ventures

What was the look you had in mind for Shah Rukh Khan's KBC wardrobe?

I've been coordinating with Siddharth Basu's wife Anita and her brief to me was very clear. Clean lines and the simple, classic look. The endeavour all along has been to not over-emphasise the clothes because the prime focus of KBC is the show and the host's interaction with the people. The only concession to fashion that I've made is to go in for skinny ties as opposed to the broad ties that everyone favours today. These ties were very "in" in the '60s and '70s and I felt that Shah Rukh with his compact frame could carry them off. In some episodes I have also given him a neck scarf that's very European and dashing. There's also some subtle detailing in the stitches on the jacket or the way the handkerchief peeks out of the top pocket of his suit. But for the most part, Shah Rukh's clothes are all very elegant and tailored, in subtle effective tones that blend with the backdrop. Black, grays, blues...

No reds given the magenta backdrop?

Red is a very vibrant colour. It would jump out of the screen and scream out loud. I've been very careful not to use over-bright colours because I wanted Shah Rukh's face in focus...His clothes are secondary. They only help to highlight his intrinsic warmth and make him more "connected" to his audience.

His "Hot-Seat" look is in sharp contrast to his hip-hop wardrobe in the video that works as a prelude to every new episode.

I could go wild in the video because Ganesh Hegde's brief to me was for Shah Rukh to be cool and chilled-out. In the video he is the quintessential superstar that everyone aspires to be. So the look I went for was slightly bling, plenty pop, very Justin Timberlakish. And going by the response both seem to have worked equally well.

Did KBC necessitate plenty of shopping sprees abroad?

Not really, because Mumbai today is a very savvy city. When everything that is fashionable is accessible here, why would I feel the need to travel abroad?

For Armani and Louis Vuitton?

Shah Rukh is our biggest brand today, so why would we need other brands? Honestly, KBC is very Indian. Its guests are Indian. Its host is Indian...

So will Shah Rukh be donning ethnic ensembles too?

May be, in some special episodes.

But no leather jackets and jeans?

No way!

You've been designing Shah Rukh's clothes for a long time...

For over a decade.

So how different is designing for KBC from designing for one of his films?

Films are always character-based but in KBC I'm dressing up Shah Rukh the man and not the actor.

What's Shah Rukh's biggest USP as a style icon?

He can carry off anything, from jeans to a three-piece suit. He's your dream clothes- horse. Everything looks good on him because he is neither too broad nor too slim, not too tall nor too short...

Did you watched the first episode of KBC with Shah Rukh and his kids at Mumbai's Hotel Taj Land's End?

No, I was in Dubai at the time with his wife Gauri. But it was a proud moment for us when we got calls from all over the world giving him the thumbs -p. My voice-mail was choked, so I wonder what happened to his!

How did his kids, Aryan and Suhana, like the show?

His kids adore him and so too do all the boys and girls he blows kisses to every night. That little endearment has helped him instantly bond with the below 10 age group.

What was your first impression of KBC's new host?

Warm...Endearing...Instantly connecting with his audience. I loved it when he got up and so casually began to give his tense guest a massage.

Is he in the habit of doing that?

No, but he truly cares for people. And I think that's why he's able to bring a smile to so many faces.

Will you ever face him on the Hot Seat?

I'll be coming on the Valentine Day Special.

You like quizzing?

I'm awful! My strength is GQ not GK.

And yet you fielded queries during the practise sessions at Mannat?

Shah Rukh was pretty nervous and apprehensive at that point. He did not think he was qualified for the job. I was at those sessions, as a friend to lend moral support rather than a contestant.

You too are returning with the second season of Koffee With Karan. Will it be easier the second time around?

It is never easy. I'm as scared as I would be if I were making my first film. But there's a lot of excitement too because today Koffee... is a large part of my entity and has helped tremendously in brand-building.

So what's new with Koffee... this season?

The decor. We have a new set designed like a loft in Soho or Greenwich Village. Some of the guests are the same but they are paired with someone different.

Sanjay Leela Bhansali now comes in with Mallika Sherawat instead of Aishwarya Rai. They certainly are an odd couple.

From the outside it would seem that Sanjay and Mallika have nothing in common. They come from different spheres...different cinemas. But put then on the couch and they are explosive.

Was it easy to pin down the elusive Ms Sherawat?

I only had to ask. She's actually very warm and friendly.

Saif was to come with Rosa but walked in with Soha instead. Did you miss the former?

It was always the brother and sister together. And the warmth and affection they share comes across.

Who was your most difficult guest on the first season?

They were all fantastic but I had to research Sunny Deol some because though I have great regard for him as an actor I'm not very close to him. I did not mind the effort. In fact, now that I'm a member of the media ,I plan to take on a dozen people who I don't know all that well. It's great fun to watch a closeness develop between a twosome like Sanjay and Mallika who you thought were poles apart. I put in a lot of effort for the one-on-one with actor-AIDS activist Richard Gere and had to do a lot of research before the Mira Nair-Tabu interface too.

We're told that you were so wowed by The Namesake that you had to have "Koffee" with Mira and even had a special preview arranged for your friends at Yash Raj Studios recently?

I loved The Namesake. It's so moving. Watching the film is like a catharsis because it deals with the sense of loss of self specially in a foreign land where you can feel your identity being submerged in the clash of cultures. Jhumpa Lahiri has written a very beautiful book and only Mira could have adapted it so beautifully. I recommend it to everyone.

Why is it that the majority of your celeb guests come from the film fraternity?

From the feedback we got, people want to see me with my film friends. So 70 per cent of my guests will be from my world but for every Shah Rukh and Kajol there will be a Shobhaa De and a Vijay Mallya who will talk about the general aspects of life.

No politicians on your show?

The vibe of Koffee... is fun, casual and irreverent. So I don't think we should bring politics on board.

No, its far more sensible to stay with your Kuch Kuch Hota Hai trio, Shah Rukh, Kajol and Rani to get your show off to a rocking start. What was the highpoint of that episode?

It was a mad show...throbbing with energy, chemistry and history which wasn't surprising given the fact that KKHH, the film that brought the four of us together, will be completing a decade next year.

NDTV now has a new partner in Karan Johar and Dharma Productions and everyone's waiting for the promised No. 1 entertainment channel that you have been promoting.

It's too early to talk about the entertainment channel. You'll know all once it kicks off. It's very exciting being a part of the creative development. I have a great deal of respect for Pronoy Roy who is tremendously futuristic when it comes to television.

The speculations are that Koffee... will move to NDTV now that Sameer Nair is also going on board.

We know that Sameer has put in his papers but it's still not official where he will be moving so I don't want to comment on that. However, Koffee... will always be Star property. I have a great association with the channel. It gave me a star platform and there's no way I'm going to pull Koffee... out from Star.

Hey, by now you should have been endorsing a brand of coffee.

I've been dying to and am really upset that no one has appraoched me yet given the fact that today coffee has become synonymous with Karan. May be they will now that it's on paper (Laughs).

Actor, director, designer, talk-show host and now animation maker. Karan Johar sure has come a long way.

That he has.

Why an animation feature?

You'll know why when you know what the subject is. But since I'm in the process of putting it on paper, I can't reveal too many details at this juncture.

Does this mean that direction will take a backseat now?

Not at all. In fact, I'm leaving in February to research my next film.

Why? Is it a historical?

(After a moment of stunned silence) No, it is not a historical. And before you ask let me say that I won't tell you what it is. Not at the moment.

KJo and the sex bomb

Rakhi Sawant
Karan Johar

No, we aren't talking about Mallika Sherawat, her big mouth or her publicity shenanigans. It seems featuring her once has been more than enough for the usually unflappable Karan Johar on KwK!

The second season of Koffee with Karan airs from February 11, and KJo is hell-bent on getting item girl-turned-reality star Rakhi Sawant in the third season. He says, " I would love to feature Rakhi. There are very few people who project who they are with such ease. Rakhi is aspirational to me.

She says and does exactly what she feels. It's wonderful, especially for someone like me who walks around with two faces. It's a lesson to learn."

(Somewhere in a corner of Mumbai, Pardesiya is blaring from a music system and Rakhi is breaking into a violent jig of happiness on reading this item…!)
