WHY???
Why would a voice like Rafi Saab's ever be thought of in terms less than divine, god-like or hallowed?
Why would someone who could sing an angst -ridden "ye duniya agar mil bhi jaye", and then a soul- piercing "insaan bano" , someone who could do justice to a love anthem like "tumne mujhe dekha" in the same breath as a comical "Sar jo tera chakraye" ever be spoken of in anything other than hushed, awed, revered tones?
Why would an accomplished singer like Asha Bhosle whose meteoric rise to fame began with memorable duets with Rafi Saab like "O bedard zamaane", "Ek pardesi mera dil le Gaya", "accha ji main haari", "bahut shukriya", "deewana hua baadal"...not want to acknowledge the greatness of this awe-inspiring man whose voice could transform the most mundane of songs into extraordinary?
Who could be foolish enough to deny the sublime exquisiteness of his rich, mellifluous tones?
Who could be brave enough to attempt to come anywhere even a million light years close to this man's singing?
If playback singing was an altar, then Rafi Saab would be one of its most worshipped Gods.
I cannot even begin to describe the feelings his voice arouses inside of me when I hear an incredibly romantic "tum jo mil gaye ho", or a carefree "har fikr ko dhuen mein" or a haunting "aaj purani raahon se" or a wickedly teasing "nain lad jayi hai" or a flawless rendition of "'madhuban mein radhika" or a youthfully exuberant "chahe koi mujhe jungle kahe" or a soul-searingly sad "meri kahani bhoolne wale".
Yes, we don't need a Rafi tribute on II.
Not because no one can do justice to his songs, not because its unfashionable to appreciate Rafisaab, not because we don't have a Rafian on the judges panel on II.
But because Tributes are given for people who've passed on.
Rafi Saab lives. His voice lives.
And we don't need two-bit contestants on II to remind us of him.
Like Rafi Saab himself told us through this song..
"Tum mujhe yoon bhula na paoge..
Jab kabhi bhi sunoge geet mere...
Sang Sang tum bhi gungunaoge..."
