Not because no one can do justice to his songs, not because its unfashionable to appreciate Rafisaab, not because we don't have a Rafian on the judges panel on II.
But because Tributes are given for people who've passed on.
Rafi Saab lives. His voice lives.
And we don't need two-bit contestants on II to remind us of him.

Like Rafi Saab himself told us through this song..
"Tum mujhe yoon bhula na paoge..
Jab kabhi bhi sunoge geet mere...
Sang Sang tum bhi gungunaoge..."

Yes, Rafi Saab lives on, but just for us, who have always loved, valued and cherished him. But there is a whole new generation who has not heard his songs. It is not my job to introduce them to Rafi Saab's divine songs, but still I feel they are losing out on something which they should enjoy ,if not revere. It is their inheritance.

From the yesteryears golden period, Ashaji is the only one who has managed to catch the pulse of this generation. It is her duty to give unbiased praise and correct knowledge about all these legends, not only Rafi Saab. She can elaborate about Manna Dey, Talat, Hemant Kumar, Mukesh, Geeta Dutt, Shamshad Begum, etc etc. But she doesnt. Thats the tragedy.

Infact she has only and only promoted KK and RDB, not only now but for more than a decade now.The younger generation has grown up to believe that RDB was the nation's greatest composer. If only they hear SD,,,,,,,,😔. Let them be encouraged to listen to more greats and then let them decide. But all the time repeating that RDB..KK...RDB...KK...Hmmm.

Thats just my point. No tribute from her is necessary, just honest observations and experiences. Younger generation will listen to what she has to say.She has a duty.Thats it.😊 Otherwise what the hell is she contributing to the show, that Sunidhi, Salim and Annu cannot give???????

Rafisaab songs should not be attempted by mere mortals...If they can't even come close and not do 1% of justice and butcher them than why do we want to see any one sing?
As someone mentioned b4 Asha tai is only promoting RDB and KK songs-compositions...
Rafi saab is rafi saab A God when it comes to singing...Tough songs for anyone to sing...

Agree with your observations on Asha B being totally hung up on RDB and KK, and of course the new generation is missing out on not only Rafi saab's songs..but like you mentioned Manna da, Talat (sigh!), Hemant da, Geeta D ( double sigh!)..but its their loss. And Oh... SDB.. Wow! He's phenomenal. And he was her FIL..so why not promote him too? 😛😉

As a contemporary of these greats and having known many of them professionally and personally it would certainly make for interesting TV if Asha B were to share some anecdotes and tidbits about them. But she chooses not to. And like you rightly pointed out, that kind of nullifies her contribution to the show. She's just like any other judge...not a singing diva from the times where melody was king.

I do feel sorry for the youngsters who have yet to discover the magic of Rafi Saab and others like Talat M and Geeta D.

Be that as it may, I kind of envy them too. There's world of music out there for them, waiting to be discovered. And having said that, I'd rather they get the full impact of the magic by listening to the originals, rather than the contestants' pathetic attempts to copy them and their songs..😛

Sami you are so right... The Sa Re Ga Ma of the early years was a musical contest in the true sense of the word. The contestants there never had it easy, the "Taal" round and the one in which the pitch would vary..they were all so difficult, they tested the contestants. It definitely helped cull out the good from the ordinary. I still remember Naushad Saab as a judge on that show being impressed by Sanjeev Ramabhadran's rendition of a song from Baiju Bawra. And O.P Nayyar had been a judge too. It was a classy show.

These days they have it so easy. They just pick a song that suits them best and go with it and get praised for their efforts too! And yes, SDB was a gem. I adore his songs. Dev Saab relentlessly stuck with him as composer for the Navketan banner and that's a reason why Dev Anand songs are still so popular.

Sakshi... well, that was the magic of those singers. Each one of them was unique. A Mukesh song was a Mukesh song..he owned it. And so was a Hemant da song totally his own. Can you imagine anyone else doing a "Jalte hain jiske liye" like Talat did?

These days everyone is interchangeable. And that robs them of their exclusivity, IMO. I hear so many instances of a song being recorded by 2-3 singers and finally only one of them makes it to the final CD.

If the youngsters think the oldies are boring..well, they should take a crash course in music appreciation. Although, I do subscribe to change and progress, I also believe in respecting roots. You cannot forget Edison just because Steve Jobs makes trendier phones!!!

And yes, well, Geeta D was the original clubber. Who can forget her "Tadbeer se bigdi hui", "Babuji dheere chalna" "Hoon abhi main Jawaan" or "jaata kahan hai deewane"..her voice is so sensuous..its like honey and wine combined! A heady combination!!!

You know, I really think if these contestants were to attempt the oldies but in a wholly different way, they might be able to make a better impact..or at least win some more brownie points..

I have watched American Idol on and off and have seen renditions of popular oldies, but these guys are clever...first off, they do not attempt to copy the original in any way!! Secondly, they try and add their own interpretation to the song. Like making an RnB song sound like it was done by Michael Jackson..just to give an outrageous example. That impresses the judges and also earns the contestants a lot of respect as serious singers.
Why cannot we see our people do that? Here the points are all for those who can sound as close to the original as possible. One different note and they get picked on by the judges.
I just never could understand this "cut, copy, paste" attitude on II or any other Indian singing reality show, for that matter.
Look at Sonu Nigam...an extremely talented singer (one of the current crop that I adore), a self-confessed Rafi-maniac, but when he sings Rafi saab's songs, he adds something of his own to it. Or Shankar Mahadevan. That's the mark of an accomplished singer.

Plz Lizzie,
Let them not touch the oldies. Have you came across "yeh mera deewnapan hai" from Yahudi???I am talking abt today's version? Try it. It is by some female singer. If you take it as an isolated song, it may appeal to the youth. I couldn't control myself from cringing. I just couldn't stop from comparing it with the original heart-wrenching rendition by the king of pathos Mukesh.

Yes, of course, I agree in principle. I don't count us golden oldie freaks among the audience that would be impressed. I'm just saying this as a means of "judging" a talent show and as an starting point for the uninitiated. If they copy the original they're always gonna fall short. I hate cover versions of old songs, especially remixes. But if these guys want to be taken seriously as singers they should learn to adapt. The adpatation maybe good, bad or ugly..that's left to interpretation. I guess more often than not, its bound to be ugly! 😛
Of course, I'm more than okay, though, if they decide to do an alternate version of "Chaiyya chaiyya" instead of "Chaliya mera naam" 😃.

Exactly my point too.😊 This time having Asha ji on the show sort of raised my expectations.😭 They have all come crashing down. If this is what she plans to do in the rest of episodes , then less , the better.😔

Today is classical round. I haven't watched the promo, but no expectations. Hope nobody attempts "poochon na kaise maine rain beetayee"❤️ And am sure nobody will attempt Kuhu Kuhu.😆

Pandit Jasraj is the guest judge. Lets see what he has to say.
