Sakshi... well, that was the magic of those singers. Each one of them was unique. A Mukesh song was a Mukesh song..he owned it. And so was a Hemant da song totally his own. Can you imagine anyone else doing a "Jalte hain jiske liye" like Talat did?
These days everyone is interchangeable. And that robs them of their exclusivity, IMO. I hear so many instances of a song being recorded by 2-3 singers and finally only one of them makes it to the final CD.
If the youngsters think the oldies are boring..well, they should take a crash course in music appreciation. Although, I do subscribe to change and progress, I also believe in respecting roots. You cannot forget Edison just because Steve Jobs makes trendier phones!!!
And yes, well, Geeta D was the original clubber. Who can forget her "Tadbeer se bigdi hui", "Babuji dheere chalna" "Hoon abhi main Jawaan" or "jaata kahan hai deewane"..her voice is so sensuous..its like honey and wine combined! A heady combination!!!
You know, I really think if these contestants were to attempt the oldies but in a wholly different way, they might be able to make a better impact..or at least win some more brownie points..
I have watched American Idol on and off and have seen renditions of popular oldies, but these guys are clever...first off, they do not attempt to copy the original in
any way!! Secondly, they try and add their own interpretation to the song. Like making an RnB song sound like it was done by Michael Jackson..just to give an outrageous example. That impresses the judges and also earns the contestants a lot of respect as serious singers.
Why cannot we see our people do that? Here the points are all for those who can sound as close to the original as possible. One different note and they get picked on by the judges.
I just never could understand this "cut, copy, paste" attitude on II or any other Indian singing reality show, for that matter.
Look at Sonu Nigam...an extremely talented singer (one of the current crop that I adore), a self-confessed Rafi-maniac, but when he sings Rafi saab's songs, he adds something of his own to it. Or Shankar Mahadevan. That's the mark of an accomplished singer.
