So we've still got Sunday to pass - not to mention whatever part of Saturday for respective time zones, and I have this vague line of thought that I want to further, so I think a discussion would be fun - hence this thread...

Now looking back at the months of this show's story in retrospect, one can tell the show was always about GK - about depicting the custom of deevyarvattu, it's place in the society, and depicting its consequences through a subjective case of a family, and the couple GK, in this case. But have we ever wondered what things could have been like, if not as they are?!

DISCLAIMER: This is totally AU, in a sense, because it's all about what if! Just to clarify, I think this show is such a beautiful complexity because of the way it is, because of the way its characters are inevitably tangled with each others lives... and because all that complication gives rise to multiple layered rich characterizations such as the ones we have - and gives us what we all like to call a thinking audience's show!

I'm just talking hypothetically, and trying to imagine alter circumstances - random deviation of thought! No offense intended, if you know me from this forum at all - you know how much I love Gulaal ☺️

Let's begin with Gulaal

What if Vasant never had a younger brother 'Kesar'?

So she could still be Nirja, she could still fall in love with Vasant and the two could still be married. Dushyant could still be the evil cousin who obsessed himself about Gulaal and killed Vasant in the lure of the moment - so that when the situation did come down to deeyarvattu Gulaal would not have the Kesar option.

Biggest question here is - minus of Kesar, would Gulaal still have 'sacrificed' her chance at escaping the ordeal of being a widow and following on Vasant's sapna? It's a major question, because in way it determines exactly how long ago Kesar became an indispensable presence in her life. She claimed that she had to stay back in the house, and take care of her responsibilities, and that has always been her understood cause of the DV with Kesar. Point is, if it wasn't for him, would her sense of responsibility still be as undeterred for Vasant's dream? Which translates to - has her persuasion of goal all these years been of Vasant's dream, or Kesar's welfare and future? Partially, those two factors overlap, but really, they are still distinct. Would a DV with Dushyant - her only option minus Kesar - would have been her decision to save MB's family from harm and property from being usurped, as a part of her moral obligation towards the unfulfilled duties of her husband?

Bottom line - what would Gulaal's decision after Vasant's death have been, if there was no Kesar.

And on that note, one begins to wonder how indiscreetly, but constantly divine justice has been dealt to Gulaal - in the form of a savior like Kesar. Half the fables in the world are centered on a lonely damsel whose life is spent in cinders and oblivion, until the day the prince charming comes in and changes it all. While from a shallow perspective it may seem to be Gulaal's case too - it really isn't. Kesar isn't a prince charming who's stepped out of the blue into Gulaal's limbo excuse of a life. Gulaal herself has been instrumental to merge his color with her life - while its fateful that Vasant did have a brother called Kesar - everything else about his presence in Gulaal's life is ironically self induced.

And somewhere, thinking along that tangent - one begins to see the beauty of how 'fate' has returned to save Gulaal - courtesy her goodness. In all her error of decisions, in all her extremity of sacrifice, and more or less blind sense of righteousness, Gulaal has been such an utterly pure soul, so white in her intentions - that despite the rude jolts of crisis time and again - most of them being repercussion of her own misjudgments and austere ideologies; life has given her Kesar. An angel she truly deserves... for what if Kesar had genuinely built a level for hatred for her to change the person he was? What if he had managed to drown his dilemma and turn outright black and vengeful? Or what if, he'd just fallen in love with Talli on his return?

When you look at Kesar, you realize Gulaal has been lucky after all - responsible for her luck, but also plain lucky. And then you think, she of all the people, truly deserves a happiness like that! Fair enough!

Let's move on to Kesar

What if the Nirja Vasant went out in search of was a 50 some year old woman who came to save Talsagra village? So Vasant would have never been enamored by the beauty of this pretty girl, never fallen in love with the virtues of her heart which equaled her external charisma. Dushyant would have never found lust cum obsession for the lover, then wife of his brother, and hence never killed him. But most importantly, Kesar would have never met Gulaal!

How would that affect his life? His village would be saved by the old lady Nirja. His elder brother Vasant and Dushyant would get married in time, to whoever was respectively chosen for them, or by them. There would be no love triangles, quadrangles, and no gore. Kesar would probably never be sent to boarding, and end up growing into a shadow of his Vasant bha and the reign of Talsagra village would probably be succeeded by Sarpanch Vasant. There would always be the negative elements like JK and Raman, Dushyant would likely never reform (enough), and Giga and his family would be the second fiddle as always?

Basically - Kesar would have the normal life, of a normal powerful rural joint family. So although with the show's own story line, Gulaal is the soulmate for him - he could well have had a straight forward simpler life minus her, yeh?! Probably even have fallen in love with a girl his age like Talli?!

Now this other side of the coin is the debate point here. Of why Kesar deserves Gulaal - if or not!

Again, totally hypothetical. We have those random posts about Gulaal-Vasant being the story, but at least the bunch of us regular and loyal viewers agree it is about GK. So I thought why not try and counter question what we have, and see why exactly it is meant to be about Gulaal Kesar... Gulaal's side easier explained, I've done. Now let's hear it from you guys about Kesar?

ps: Feel free to add/subtract any what if angles to the story and/or my post. Basically, lets strive to harp on about why GK are ideal soulmates! ☺️

Please chip in your views... and may the Sunday be past before we realize, Amen! 😆

Very interesting post ...like all your posts are...and very interesting line of thought. !

Responding to the Gulaal part : Now that you have made me think about that point in time , I tend to think that if Kesar was not there Gulaal would not have opted for diyarvattu with the man who killed her husband and she would have tried some other way of still saving the family.. and even when Kesar was there she had the choice to that ..find some other way of saving the family (assuming that would have been possible, since we are being hypothetical anyways..)...but she instead went for diyarvattu with Kesar ..therefore I like to think that even then, Kesar was a very special person in her life , someone who mattered to her immensely , someone who shared the deep bond she had with Vasant, someone who had been her friend , though much younger and still a kid at that time ...the bonds of friendship were there and deep enough then too - I would like to think - for Gulaal to envisage her life as devoted to Kesar and taking care of his well-being ...

Coming to your question on Kesar : I like to think that for Kesar too, having Gulaal in his life was very special compared to not having had her ... for if she was not there , he would have led a "normal" life , no doubt , but he would not have experienced the depths of the soul-stirring relationship he has with Gulaal ...dont you see how much closer to Gulaal he has always been compared to what he is with the rest of the family
(other than Vasant) ... probably , if Gulaal was not this Gulaal, he would have had the same kind of "ordinary" bond with his wife like he has with the rest of his family - if you know what I mean- but he is lucky to have Gulaal, with whom he feels so bonded to the core and loves her so deeply and (now) unconditionally...

Well, you are a wonderful writer and I enjoyed your post , but I am afraid in re
turn for your beautiful Sunday musings I have given you some peculiar Sunday "ramblings" , but i hope through my clumsy way of conveying you get what I actually wanted to convey - and to believe- that is , Kesar and Gulaal are soulmates and
are incomplete without each other ...they could have well been without each other, but they were destined to be together and they are totally complete when they are with each other...
In short , I would like to think that Kesar and Gulaal were always special in each others life and there was always a connection between their souls...

Thanks for your input VJ - rambling is the idea, really - and doing it collectively makes it fun! I agree about the way Kesar bonds with Gulaal is unique to him - so when she was not picture, and if she was not in picture - I wonder if he would have found someone who could get under his skin like Gulaal does, to bring out shades of him that may well lay dormant otherwise!

Although he was deemed closest to Vasant - it is interesting to note, that for a whole decade of knowing the secret of Dushyant's murder act, Kesar's greatest dilemma, even more than the loss of his father like mentor brother, was Gulaal's mysterious secret keeping. The fact that he did not step up in ten years, and even after, to tell the family the truth that he had learned - and consequently get justice for his dead brother - is evidence of how inside, he never could go against Gulaal, much less lose his faith in her.

I dnt know if it makes sense but I think kesar needed somebody like gulaal in his life bcoz i think they complement each other perfectly... gul is like an anchor in kesu's life and tends to bring this much needed stability in his life after all the chaotic gust of emotions and temperament he had..
That means even if we assume gulaal and the subsequent events did not occur, kesar still was always an unruly and exceptional child who needed some special treatment to bring out the positive person in him and tht applies to an adult kesar too... In absence of gul, he could have had jst anybdy (example Talli 🤢) in his life but tht wud not challenge him or change him in any way, whereas almost every interaction with gul seems to make him grow as a person and add some spark and positivity into his character (besides adding smiles to our faces)..😳

to bring out shades of him that may well lay dormant otherwise! its almost like he live so fully when he is around gulaal ...his love, his resentment , his anger, his pining and his ultimate devotion ..she makes him experience it all so fully and completely...

Its almost as if he always knew she would have a valid reason... but the fact that she kept it from him and thie possibility that she may be closer to Dushyant than to him , was what seemed to bother him more... So simple was his faith in her and so strong was his need to be accepted by her as the most special person in her life ...much before he consciously realised that he was in love with her

👏 Well said, and ofc you're making sense! He's never truly had that connection with anyone else - with or without Gulaal in the picture... and so, given the fact that he's one hell of fine human, he did deserve someone like Gulaal (read: Gulaal herself 😆 ) to come into his life and bring out all his true colors... he's depth of character is totally her doing - the bad and good!

You feeling better??

Had a really long day so reserving this space for my comments tomorrow...

Oh..just wanted to write this in case it slipped my mind tomorrow...

It is all about destiny right? I have always maintained this (and as sad as it may sound), Vasant was the bridge and he brought Gulaal into Kesar's life AND Kesar into Gulaal's life. I know that your thread is about the what ifs...but I feel that Gulaal would have found her way into Talsagara one way or the other because it was meant to be and her soul was waiting for her there...

Will come back with a clear head tomorrow...😆

Bottom line - what would Gulaal's decision after Vasant's death have been, if there was no Kesar.
On that one...I feel Gulaal would have preferred to keep at her responsibilities and fight for the family as Vasant's widow. I don't think she would have ever opted to become Dushy's wife come hell or high water. Ok, Kesu was extremely important to Vasant and even before Gulaal stepped foot into Talsagara, she knew that Kesu was Vasant's heartbeat. So, to Gulaal, marrying Kesu was practically like marrying Vasant's heartbeat...and she became Kesu's knight in shining armour, protecting him, fighting for him, nurturing him. I remember an episode where Gulaal told Kesu that Vasant and she used to call him their 'sapna'. Kesu got very angry because he did not want to be called a girls name - sapna but that is what Kesu meant to Gulaal...Vasant's dream!! So marrying Dushy was completely out of the question!

Jeez...here I thought I would get a quick peek at the forum and call it a nite and then I saw your topic!!! Ok, back tomorrow😆

So reading your reply it struck me, there could have been the yet another angle. What if, there had been no Dushyant? What if then, Vasant had never been killed and Gulaal never a widow? Kesar's thing for Gulaal has been quite from the beginning - as he himself told her tujhpar main apna haq samjhata aya hun, aur ye aaj se nahin hai... bina kisi rishte ki parwaa kiye...

Instances like the time she made mojri for Vasant and Kesar wanted it for himself, or when he acted bratty to talk to Gulaal first on the phone, or even when for the pag-phera rasam he told Vasant that he's always taking Gulaal away from him, but today it will be other way round... while in that part Gulaal was just really attached and fond of Kesar - irrespective of his relationship with Vasant - Kesar himself always cut a different slot for Gulaal. Who knows, what things would have been like in the triangle of Vasant-Gulaal-Kesar once Kesar grew up, minus Dushyant and Vasant murder?

So while Vasant's death has fatefully made Gulaal a part of Kesar's life as his partner, his own inclinations for her were always some indication - the fact that he never got over her, in a decade of gap - is testimony of how deep rooted his feelings are! Gulaal - because of the unique traits she could bring out in him - was always indispensable, and that had nothing to do with her being his beloved brother's wife. He hated her first sight, and let's not forget he threw a stone at her the first time he saw her, lol - but then she just intrigued him, and finally she was his favorite person - whatever her bond or role in his life. The absolute favorite - a position which once she took over, never went to anyone else in Kesar's list!
