“Aap kar lo beta kaam Naina chal rahi hai hamare saath to drop us off you don’t have to worry, you finish up work go home and come in the morning” Papa insisted
“Aise kaise Papa?” Viveka was shocked
“I am telling you, (Bua and Fa had accompanied the newly weds to the parivar ka mandir some place in Uttarakhand) Piyush hai who ruk jaayega Dadi se saath aap apne ghar ka dekho beta””
Dadu was admitted for his surgery, Ma was in Germany for 4 days, she had planned on taking time off, but an executive quit abruptly and Anu Mathur was asked to get there to take pass down
One of the twins, Karuna was tailed by some creep for a week and she was traumatized
A bunch was happening at Rohini
Naina was civil but not chatty with her
She really didn’t have a friendship with Lekha, she FTed or Whatsapped Kalyani or Mitalee when she got a chance
Chachu came by for a day trip every week and returned without staying the night
Satyen was not making much progress in PT
His BP was still being erratic, he had 3 or 4 good days and a couple bad days
They ran a battery of tests again
When the doctor was home and announced to the boys that they can run the tests again
Raanav and Viveka were jolted back to the reality of why they even married
The self realization caused them to lock gaze for a few minutes
Smrita noticed that
She would later tell Satyen
“Dono mein kya chal raha hai, they looked very nervously at each other”
“Now you want to dissect even a glance the middle class girl gives her husband?” Satyen mocked her not so gently
“Why did you have to bring her class into this?”
“Would you have bothered to be worried about Lekha glancing at Rakshit?” he hugged her shoulder
“Haath hatao aap” she scolded pushing him off
“I know the feeling is like second skin” Satyen grumbled
“I don’t judge her, only she thinks she is too special to wear designer wear”
That visit with MIL had not gone well for Viveka
The designer had told her on her face that “for your size we will have to custom create”
“Isnt that the whole point?” Viveka had laughed
Stumping the famous designer
“Yes, we alter and make modifications of sleeve and bust size etc” the designer tried to be polite
But Viveka wondered if she had ever even touched anyone bigger than size 6
“Just pick the style, she will make for you” Smrita put the designer in her place treating her like a mere darzi for bringing attention to her not so elite DIL on the busy winter afternoon at her Khanna Market boutique
“Yeah I have people that are very good” the designer clapped back
“Lekha liked a couple” Smrita quickly changed her tone
Word spread fast around here
She didn’t want the designer broadcasting “Smrita Parashar came with a rather “pudgy” young girl wearing glasses and wanted her to be fitted for outfits, I mean, the nerve”
“So what did the girls pick out?” Satyen smiled pretending to look at his phone
“How do you know?”
“Umm.. I don’t”
He got weekly anti-fraud snapshots of his personal account spend, and Rajeev Syal usually listed the top 10 in a spreadsheet
This one was number 10
He didn’t mention it to Smrita
He was not a cheap or a petty husband
“Viveka passed, Lekha and I bought a few”
“She is a handloom, hand woven kind of a girl”
“You sound more proud than she would be” Smrita’s turn to gently mock her husband
“I miss those days Smri, when you wore such clothes, Khadi jo than a Regal bldg. mein Conn place mein?”
“HAI abhi bhi” she rolled her eyes derisively
“Yaad hai tumhe Baba Kharak Singh Marg mein Coffee House mein chai pe miley hum dono you were wearing a peach dupatta?” Satyen looked at her fondly
She smiled self consciously
“You remember too much” she whispered leaning on his shoulder
He was her world, she had “run away” to marry him, she went against the world to marry him, she had been faithful and loyal through time, unlike some of her male and female friends in the highest echelons of power
Some had open, open marriages, and some had not so open open marriages
But Satyen loved her deeply and she more than loved him back
“Go with Viveka and buy some of those cotton outfits” Satyen wished, gently caressing her hair with his fingertips
“Hmm” she was not crazy about the idea
But she loved him to pieces so she would do it
“It would be a good way to connect with her Smri”
That was it
WHY did he have to say THAT to her
She pulled away stiffly
He realized he had stepped on a nerve
“Nothing about her is right for this family” she mumbled turning to look at him compassionately
“WE don’t choose yaar , the BOYS choose what makes good family for them”
“I doubt Raanav would have agreed to marry a girl of our social status so quietly, she is a commoner tabhi maan gaya who”
“Commoner?” Satyen laughed hysterically until he turned red
Smrita realized now she had gone too far
She commonly used that word when she spoke with her GFs but not with Satyen usually
“Raanav is more class conscious than Rakshit how did he agree aap batao mujhe?”
“Raanav is more class conscious because YOU held him close and trained him honey”
There was a tense silence
“I will go with you when you go get tested in the morning
“Absolutely not, aap jao apne event par, its crazy, its only a few tests”
“Rakshit is going to Aurangabad, Lekha is not in town” Smrita lamented
“Raanav hai I am going to be fine”
“Viveka can you please be with Dad tomorrow when he goes for his tests?”
She texted her DIL placing a demand
Right around the time Viveka had hit send on a text to Akash, kal main ruk jaati hoon
Daduke paas, Naina can go attend her interview!”
