Chapter Two ' Darkness.
"Life is so strange. When we expect something to happen, the unexpected occurs. I never thought I'd be on a journey to find out my hidden past, that past that my family kept away from me. But, to find the truth, I have to go alone or else I won't be able to achieve it. Sometimes, we have to fend for ourselves, but then other times an angel comes in disguise. A ray of hope amidst this darkness."
Maanvi Chaudary shivered as the cool breeze of Chandigarh awoke her from her slumber. The train had stopped at the station and she looked on as a buzz of people retrieved their belongings and stepped out. She looked around; families, couples and friends occupied each stall, happily chatting whilst escaping the beckoning crowds. Being the odd one out, alone in the corner, Maanvi didn't feel happy. However, nor was she sad. She knew that to achieve something, this has to be the only way.
Walking slowly on the rock pavements, her side bag in her hands and another on her shoulders, she looked around in awe ' taking in the beautiful surroundings. The busy streets were even louder than the ones back in Rishikesh, children screaming and shouting at this end of night. She smiled whilst reminiscing her younger days, how her Beeji would shout at her for playing outside so late.
Maanvi glanced at her phone with the slight thought of someone ringing her, or messaging her. It was nearing 10pm, and she knew that everyone back at the Chaudary House thought of her to be asleep. She knew she would not get a call until the next morning, which was an advantage as it would give her some time to find her mother's friend.
"Bhai, please give me something to eat. Please." A boy about ten pleaded to a dhaba owner, his scrawny limbs begged the almost cruel looking owner.
"Do you have money?" boomed the plump man, looking down on the boy. His greasy clothes stank a bit, whilst his moustache looked slimy in the light.
"No, bhai. Please, I can't afford it. I am so hungry." The boy cried, begging for food.
The man looked displeased as he picked the boy from the hard ground with his bare hands and pushed him away. "No money, no food!" He shouted.
Maanvi couldn't take it anymore, if there was one thing she hated in the world was the cruelty to children and the poor.
"What are you doing!?" She shouted, glaring her eyes as she picked the boy up who fell due to the push.
"Madam, it happens here. If they have no money, then no food. I don't have that much money for myself, so why should I give it to them?" The man reasoned.
"That does not give you any right to push people around!" She shouted.
"It's not me who does it, everyone does that. And anyways, these things need to be done or else these pests would not stop begging."
"Begging? They are hungry. If you have children, would you like others to behave in this way?"
"If I had children, I would feed them. Not leave them lying around in the gutters."
"Just shut up." Maanvi took a deep breath to calm herself, "Go get me what you have on the menu."
"What?" The man asked.
"Food. What ever you have on the menu today, go get it. Can't you see the boy needs to be fed?"
"Madam, why do you pity this fool?"
"Just shut up and go." She didn't have the patience to argue with this man anymore and whilst he went and cooked the food, she told the boy to sit down.
"Madam, thank you. You are very nice." The boy whispered, smiling for perhaps the first time in ages.
"Madam? I expect the greaseball to call me that, but not you. And anyways, you need not to thank me, I'm eating too!" She smiled back.
"Thank you, sister." He replied and then observed the greaseball as he laid the food on the table. The boy gazed at the hot food, vegetable curry and rice and thanked the heavens for the angel that was Maanvi. Happily, he ate each and every grain there was as Maanvi looked on.
"By the way, what is your name?" She asked him, drinking a glass of water.
"Akash, sister." He replied.
"Akash'nice name. I'm Maanvi."
"You have a nice name too!" She smiled back.
Minutes after, completely satisfied with the food, Maanvi gave the greaseball the money owed with extra if Akash wanted to eat later.
The streets were getting quieter as Maanvi walked on, looking for any hotel or place to stay for the night. The night became darker, with only the shining of the moon in the sky. Suddenly, Maanvi felt uncomfortable, she had heard about the news of young girls getting attacked by scoundrels in the darkness of the night and she did not like it.
But what she didn't know was whilst worrying about safety, she would fall into a ether of darkness, laying on the ground, her crimson red blood splattered over as she fought with herself for life. She looked around, the world slowly becoming smaller and slower as a black car attacked her from behind and she fell into a deep, serene sleep.
