16. Inevitable
Kripa had been numb all day. But now that the sensation was coming back, she still did not feel as if she was the one who had lived yesterday. It was as if it had been some other girl and she had been watching the whole scene play out from sidelines. She cannot believe she had succumbed to the ever present desire between them. She had thought she was immune after five years of distance. But she had been proved wrong. One touch, one glance and she had been in his arms. She had never felt the urge to grab anyone as she felt whenever Angad was nearby. She had known that Angad was a name who would not be in the future. She had had hopes that she would marry someday in the future. But now she was not sure she could love anyone as she had loved Angad. She was not sure it was all in the past now and she was afraid Angad would always be a part of their lives.
Aashaye's office was only a short distance away from home, so she generally walked home. She had been so preoccupied in her thoughts, that she had not noticed that a car had followed her from the office. When she was about to cross the road, she noticed Angad in the driving seat of the car and stopped in her tracks. Angad got out from the car and opened the passenger door for her to get in. When Kripa mutely shook her head in refusal, Angad gave her a look that said "don't make carry you". He would strangle her if he touched her in the mood he was in.
After yesterday, Kripa did not feel safe around him. She was afraid of herself. Her senses went haywire when she was near Angad, and in close proximity she was sure she would do something she would regret later. She had learnt that regrets are useless, and it is better to learn from your mistakes then to waste time regretting them. It was a battle of wills between two equally stubborn people.
"Where is my son?" Angad asked before he could stop himself. He had not wanted to do this on the road side but she didn't leave him with any choice. Kripa was so astonished by what he said; she went and sat in the passenger seat. Angad went around the car and settled in the driver seat.
"Where are we going?" Kripa asked when she could find her voice. Angad didn't answer and kept on driving. When Kripa had given hope he said, "Where my son is."
"No, Angad let me talk. Let us talk."
"Time when we could have talked passed away yesterday. You had five years to talk; now I want to meet my son. Where is he? "
"He is at his skating class."
"Where is the skating class?"
"It's down the road from home."
Angad didn't ask for an address and continued driving, they were standing in front of her home in five minutes.
"How did you know my address?"
"Where to from here?" Kripa didn't answer for a minute, but sat there contemplating. Angad was also not inclined to speak. Finally accepting the inevitable, Kripa pointed to the park at the end of the road.
When they arrived at the park, Angad didn't ask where Ansh was. He just looked at Ansh and kept looking at him. After what felt like forever, Angad turned and walked towards his car.
"When will he be home?"
"6"
"When is his bed time?"
"It's a week night, so 8."
"I will come by at 8:15, and Kripa be there." saying that, without a backward glance he walked away.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The clock was moving too fast, with each passing minute her anxiety was increasing. She wanted to run away, to hide somewhere until he goes away. But she knew Angad will either follow her or wait for her because he knew her life, her friends, her business was here. She was trapped in a cage of her own making. When had the shackles formed she didn't even know, and the scary part was that, she felt relieved to be shackled.
At exact 8:15 the door bell chimed. Before it could wake Ansh, she opened the door and found Angad standing on the door. Without a word, Kripa stepped aside to let him enter.
Angad looked around and saw what would have been their home if Kripa had trusted him. He looked at the photos of their son on the mantel and for the first time in forever felt like he was not alone in the world. When he started moving towards the bedroom, Kripa tried to stall him, "he is sleeping."
"I will not wake him up." Saying this he pushed open the door to the first bedroom before Kripa could protest further, "not this room, the one next to it."
Angad closed the feminine yet welcoming room with a promise to himself that soon he would explore the room and her thoroughly. He then stepped towards the door next to it. On the door the poster there was a poster of some cartoon saying, "fighting". He smiled for the first time since the investigator has recited the latest findings about Kripa and opened the door. There in the middle of the small car shaped bed slept his son. One of the pillows was in between his thighs; the blanket was on the floor. His son was smiling probably having a sweet dream. The smile on his face reminded him of Kripa when she had slept beside him after they had made love five years ago, as she will sleep beside him every night from now on. He went to touch his downy skin but stopped himself. Some kids woke up as soon as you touched them, and he didn't want to disturb his son.
"You can touch him, he sleeps like a log," Kripa said when she saw Angad hesitate. When Angad touched his cheek the feelings he experienced could not be described in words. He was angry at Kripa for keeping him away from his son for five years. He was angry at her for depriving them both of the family which would have formed a circle of love and protection around them because of her mistrust. He was angry at himself for not going after her the morning after that night five years ago.
When he felt their son move, he moved around and exited the room. He knew Kripa followed him, but didn't turn around to face her until he got his temper under control. He went to the kitchen, searched for a glass and filled it with water before drinking the same.
"Sign them." Kripa looked at the papers in Angad's hand and looked at him quizzically.
"I have changed my will. In case something happens to me I don't want Ansh left unprotected. You will be the executer of the state till he is 18."
"But I can take care of Ansh."
"I am not finished. Below them is another document, requesting the state to grant us permission to marry, you need to sign that too." Before Kripa could protest, "I will be back tomorrow around 1 to meet our son and collect the papers." With that parting statement he left her home.
