Hi There!

After everyone's response to my first OS Snapshots I decided to convert it into a Mini One Short series. (The first OS is now titled OS Mini Series: Snapshots - Just the Beginning) Thanks so much for the support!

I wanted to give a few words about this particular One Shot - The Dusk Before the Dawn. This takes place after the events of Arjun going to Hrisikesh to bring Radhika home and before the two year leap where we saw the couple living a happily ever type of life. I wanted to explore that in between phase before they reached that point of a well adjusted couple.

Love and Marriage isn't the end of the story it's only the beginning. It's a journey between two people who have decided to commit to one another and tackle whatever Life throws their way. Mistakes will still be made, guilt will still be felt, and forgiveness will be asked. It's how they weather the storms that determine the strength of their relationship.

I also like to reiterate that I came into this serial very late so I may not be privy to certain character quirks, likes, and dislikes. Hindi is not my first language so I can't even go back and re-watch episodes without subs. So I apologize in advance if some of my writing has made the characters a bit out of character.

Also, there are some suggestive mature scenes. I tried to keep it clean so anyone can read them. But you have been warned.

If you like it please hit the Like button and don't forget to Comment Below and Let me know what you think. You don't know how important it is for us writers to get feedback from our readers. It's the only way we know if there is something we need to improve or that we should even continue writing.

Thanks!

The Dusk Before the Dawn

Part 1

The Mehra household stood calm and still on a moonlight October night. Everything seemed to be in its place. With scarily a trace of the dramatics that had happened two months ago, it would seem as if time had healed its wounds. There was a gentle creak from the master bedroom followed by softly padding footsteps that stopped in front of the kitchen refrigerator. The light was near blinding as the door was opened. Arjun cringed at the brightness but continued to squint as he studied the contents. Sweet and sour dal, rice, small stack of left over puri from dinner, milk, juice, jam, butter, bread, salad dressing, yogurt, a packet of sliced cheese, lettuce, cucumbers, carrots, eggplant, and a bunch of cilantro. He frowned and then opened the freezer taking out the carton of Vadilal Belgium chocolate ice cream. He pulled a spoon from the drawer and sat himself on the island counter top digging into the carton. His feet dangled freely as he ate. The creamy cool texture melted in his mouth causing him to gently smile.

His attention was soon diverted when he heard the sound of the bedroom door opening and the delicate footsteps of his wife coming towards him. "Arjun? Why are you sitting in the dark?"

"I have the moonlight," he simply replied and took another spoonful.

Radhika looked at her husband sitting in his pajamas on the counter top slowly eating ice cream. He was swaying his feet slightly and wiggling his toes. A small smile formed on her lips as the image in front of her was completely contradicting to his general demeanor. These were the private candid moments she had the privilege of seeing now. It was an amusing element in their newly established relationship. A relationship born from hatred and distrust was now filled with nothing but understanding, love, and trust. It was strange how things had worked themselves out, perhaps not in the most ideal manner. But that was the strangeness of life: "Truth was stranger than Fiction". Sam had moved on with Neil and they were happily married. The brightness of their smiles and the sparkle in their eyes was proof enough. Even Samrat and Piyali had to have forgiven Arjun just for that. Their daughter's tears had vanished and the cloud of anger and heartache had dissolved into laughter, jokes, and fun again.

"Why don't you use a bowl?" Radhika inquired.

"There isn't much left," showing her the carton, "You want some?" he asked as he pointed the spoon in her direction. Without a word Radhika took the spoon from his hand. Arjun had a soft grin on his face watching her use the same spoon he had been using earlier without any care or concern. Then again what was there to be concern about now that they had their share of kisses.

It had only been several weeks since he had gone to Hrisikesh and brought her back home. Her father and brother had not been so keen on the idea of letting him walk away with her to Mumbai again. It was to be expected considering the state she was in when she had initially left the city. He had felt the same emptiness and restlessness in his heart; like a piece was missing and no matter what he did the pain would not go away. Dada-ji and his mother-in-law had staunchly supported him and eventually made Dilip and Ankush consent though not without a strong word of warning.

He knew he still had a lot to prove and to make up for. There were a lot of things that he had done and said to Radhika that he regretted now. And he was sure his sister Nandini had spared no moment to torture her as well when he wasn't around. Arjun felt his mouth clenching at that thought. Oh how he was blinded back then of the truth. Even though he had succeeded in making peace with the Khanna family and had played a big part in facilitating Sam' wedding, Neil was still very wary of him. He had made it very clear to him one day that he was watching him. That if he dared to play with their emotions again and hurt his Sammy or Chashni he would not hesitate to make him pay.

Perhaps the lingering guilt and his desire to prove his worth Arjun found himself curbing his physical intimacy with Radhika. He had given a very sound reason. They had only known each other for a short period of time and he wanted to take things slow and get to know each other better before they consummated. Radhika had agreed with this decision as well. There was so much more to their relationship than physical attraction. It had always been more than that from the beginning. She had this inner strengthen that he found admirable. She wasn't afraid to go toe to toe with him if she had to. She had shown that time and time again when they were at war with each other. They both could do anything for the people they cared and loved. She could carry all the burdens of the world on her shoulders without expecting anything in return. He on the other hand could go against the world if he had to protect the ones he loved. She was carefree and bright. The pure innocence of her heart had cast its light against the darkness of his life and as clich as it sounded she had rescued him from the dark. He found a new purpose to live. In her own words light had triumphant against darkness.

Every day he was discovering new things about her, about him, about them and it was exhilarating. She was a bit of a neat freak, creative to the core, loved pani puri, hated scary movies, and was a very good cook. He was doing things that he never thought he would do like helping her paint her toenails, going on early Sunday morning walks in the park, washing dishes while she cooked, watching overly dramatic TV serials when her mother came to visit, and adding cream and sugar into his coffee because she liked it that way. He was overwhelmed with the amount of happiness that had poured into his life and he was scared of having it snatched away. That one day he would wake up and find that all of it had been just a dream.

Today had been one of those reality jarring days. The past had come back to haunt him and he was unsure which step he should take next. The choices had been brewing in his mind since the late afternoon.

********************************Flashback*******************************

"Bhaiya! Bhaiya! Bhaiya! Bhaiya, is here!" the children chanted as Arjun stepped out of the car. He gave a warm smile and patted their heads as he walked by making his way to the passenger side to receive his wife. "Bhabhi's here! Bhabhi! Bhabhi!" His grin grew even wider at the way Radhika had bent down and gave everyone a hug. Their eyes only briefly met before the children whisked her away to go play some game. He saw one of the orphanage helpers and motioned with his hand that he needed assistance in removing the groceries and other packages from the trunk of the car.

They carried as much as they could in each hand and walked to the kitchen. "Arjun Sir," a voice greeted making him turn in surprise. "Thank you so much," the man replied as he folded his hands in front of him. "These extra supplies and groceries are extremely helpful."

"Prem? It's good to see you. I thought you were on holiday?" Arjun inquired.

"I came back a few days earlier," he replied with a slightly somber expression.

"Where's Rana Kaka?" Arjun asked next as the grave response had not gone unnoticed.

"Rana Kaka?" repeating nervously, "Um, he's in the office," noticing the alert response from Arjun's eyes he continued, "You should probably go see him."

Arjun left the kitchen area and quickly strode under the covered walkway to the main office. He was warmly greeted by the secretary when he entered and then headed to the offices to the right. Without a thought of knocking he opened the door to the last office in the hallway and saw Rana Kaka clearing things from the desk into a box. "Arjun..." he said with shock in his eyes. "Why...um, what brings you here?"

"Radhika and I came to drop off some extra supplies and things for the orphanage. Why are you packing?" Arjun's eyes continued to travel around the room and he spied a small roll away suitcase sparking further questions in his mind. "Are you leaving?"

The elder man let out a heavy sigh confirming his suspicions. "I was hoping to avoid this...but in the end everyone must face the consequences of their actions one day...and I guess today is my day." Arjun stared at him unsure how he should respond to his words. "I know you must have a lot of questions and I do not know if my words will justify the answers. To tell the truth I wanted to leave earlier but I needed to know...I needed to see with my own eyes that you were going to be all right. It was the last thing I could do for my former employer." Rana saw the intense hatred in Arjun's eyes at the slightest mention of his sister Nandini. "She loves you Arjun..."

"She used me!" Arjun snarled. "I was but a mere tool...an end to her means by any means necessary! She didn't care about me! All she cared about was her revenge! Everything had been only about her...she was so selfish..."

"You are right she was selfish. And I should have known better myself but she reminded me a lot of my own daughter. The pain in her eyes...I saw that same pain before...the heartache. Maybe it was because I identified with it...and I couldn't see it happen again. My daughter had her heart broken by a man whom she loved. He betrayed her by marrying another and running away to some other city. She was left with nothing but memories of broken promises and shattered dreams of a life that he had dreamed with her. And one day I received a call from the police telling me that there had been an incident. When I came home my wife was crying and there was her picture with a garland hanging around it. She had jumped from a 10 story building. My wife fell into depression and I took up drinking. Eventually my wife left me and returned to her hometown while I continued to drown my sorrows in a bottle of liquor. But your sister kept me on and didn't fire me...she sobered me up. And because of that I am also indebted to her. I know it may be hard to believe but your sister did love you...if she didn't she wouldn't have walked away when you told her to. She also knew you were in good hands. Your wife, Radhika saved you from this life of darkness that your sister had consumed her life with." Picking up a white envelope from the table, "There are a lot of things that I am not proud of. I had hoped to have left before you came searching for me...leaving this letter for Prem to give to you and Radhika as my farewell. I admit it was cowardly and even now I am having trouble looking you in the eyes," sighing, "I have a long list of confessions but this will probably be the most important because it is one I am especially ashamed of."

Arjun took the letter from Rana's hands and looked at it questioningly. "There are those of us that teeter between darkness...those of us that become consumed by it...and those of us that can light the way even during the darkest of hours," Rana said. "I don't think I need to tell you that Radhika is a gem of a person. And Arjun..." looking at him firmly, "No matter how much you think it so...or believe it to be for the better...leaving," shaking his head, "She will always stay by your side and support you. She's that type of person. Even after knowing her for such a short period of time I know she will never leave you. Remember that." He then gave a firm pat and squeeze on Arjun's shoulder, "Khayal rakhna...maybe one day I will have enough courage to face you and Radhika again...on better grounds than the reasons I had to leave today."

Arjun silently watched as Rana Kaka took the box in one hand and the suitcase in another and left the office. He then lowered his eyes to the envelope in his hands. He knew that it was a letter addressed to both of them but he couldn't stop himself from opening it and finding out Rana Kaka's big confession. He knew it involved his sister and that thought alone both burned and worried him. As his eyes took in each line of the hand written letter he felt himself loosing each breath he took in. At the end he crumpled the letter in one hand; anger overtaking any rational thought. It was too much for him to bear even though at the time there had not been any sound evidence to prove the accusations. The reports had clearly stated a short circuit wire from next door had caused the fire at the shop in Hrisikesh. "Arjun?" He quickly smoothed the letter out and stuffed it back into the white envelope and folded it in half before putting it into the pocket of his jeans. "Arjun?" He closed his eyes briefly to take a calming breath before exiting the office to meet Radhika who was calling for him.

*****************************End of Flashback**************************

"Something's on your mind..." Arjun was brought back to the present and looked at his wife who was holding the spoon upright tapping the tip of it on her lips. "It's about London, isn't it?"

Arjun's eyes flexed realizing he had almost forgotten the other issue that had presented itself earlier in the day at work. There was an international contract that needed to be finalized with the client in London. They couldn't make it to Mumbai and a representative from Birdsong had to go to London. Samrat was still in Australia. Though he had stated he was talking with and looking into prospective clients from that region, Arjun and Radhika had an inkling that he had finally come clean to his family and was taking some retrospective time there. Piyali and Sam had a huge local client they were in the talks with regarding an upcoming campaign so they could not afford to leave at this critical juncture. He was the only one free at the moment.

"Have you already decided? Sam gave you a couple of day's time to think things over. She understands if you decline...she knows what it means to go to London for you."

Arjun sighed, "It's not right to put my own personal issues above the business. Maybe it's my own irrational fear. It's a big city...the chances of running into Nandini Di would be slim to none. She hasn't returned to the house."

"Rana Kaka tell you that?"

He felt a large knot forming in the pit of his stomach at her question. "A few weeks back before he left." The knot tightened even more at the slip of tongue comment and he shifted uncomfortably. Arjun hopped off the counter and took another spoon out of the drawer as a distraction.

"He left?" Radhika stared at Arjun's back as he slowly closed the utensil drawer. "Why didn't you tell me about it? When did he leave?"

"I'm telling you now. I just found out today. Prem told me," Arjun replied turning around. It wasn't entirely a lie but he felt horrible for saying it and telling her only half the story. His mind had seized at the fear of what would be her reaction if he told her the truth and showed her the letter. He had her trust and he knew he was being stupid for saying something that could possibly destroy it. But the words just came out. He would show her the letter. He would show it to her soon but not right now because the timing wasn't right. He reasoned this in his mind so he could make peace with his heart. He had to deal with London first.

"He just left?" Radhika questioned in disbelief.

"Yes..."

"Without saying goodbye...to anyone?"

"Yes, he did," Arjun solemnly answered. "I was surprised myself." His eyes widened in surprise as she wrapped her arms around his waist and hugged him.

Radhika knew beside Nandini Di the only other person that came close to being family for him was Rana Kaka. "I'm sorry," she said.

Arjun looked at the way Radhika was staring up at him. Her eyebrows arched in worry as her eyes reflected a genuine concern for how he was feeling at this moment. It tugged at his heart strings seeing this care and love. He hugged her tightly burying his face into the crook of her neck with his eyes closed breathing in her scent.

Neil rubbed his eyes sleepily as he walked to the back of the car to help take the suitcases out of the trunk. "Geez, what did you stuff in your bag Chashni?" he asked as he lifted a well packed to the brim

medium sized 24 inch black roll away.

"It's the coat," she answered. "Arjun Sir---"

"Arjun Sir?" Neil interrupted. "We're not at work."

Radhika gave an embarrassed smile. She had been so use to adding the 'Sir' at the end of his name for work that she was still having trouble transitioning over to just calling him Arjun in front of their colleagues. She had gotten better but every now and then the 'Sir' would slip out.

"When she gets really mad at me for disagreeing with her on some project idea...the 'Sir' returns," Arjun teased as he grabbed the other bag.

"A.r.j.u.n," Radhika enunciated, "Bought me the pea coat because of the weather in London. It's getting colder this time of year. I didn't want to carry it on the plane ride so I packed it in the suitcase...it took up a lot of room."

"And I am fine with carrying mine," Arjun said as he took his black coat from the back seat of the car and laid it across his arm. "And that thing was already stuffed before the coat even made it in. I caught her sitting on it just so she could zip it up." Earning himself a dirty look from his wife for his remark Arjun just simply smiled causing her to be further peeved.

"Yea, it feels like it," Neil replied.

"In Chashni's defense they are not going on a two day trip. It's about a week and a half because of the client's schedule. And I'm sure there will be some client dinners. So a girl's got to pack prepared," Sam said earning her a bright smile from her best friend.

"Thank you Sam," Radhika replied.

"Any time dear," she answered and gave her a big hug, "You have a safe trip," lowering her voice into a whisper, "Everything is going to be all right in London...I'll be praying for that...Lord knows we don't need any more drama in our lives."

"Thanks for doing this Sam. You didn't have to," Radhika said.

"I don't know what you are talking about. I'm your boss and I think this would be a good opportunity for you to learn the business side of things, "Sam replied with a wink.

"Well, we better get going," Arjun said looking at his watch. "We still have to check-in."

The foursome said their goodbyes and Sam and Neil watched Arjun and Radhika enter the airport before getting back into their own vehicle to leave. "Are you sure about this Sammy?" Neil asked as he clicked his seat belt in place before starting up the car. "I still don't trust him."

"Yes. And how many times do I have to tell you..."

"I know, I know...it's not my trust...it's Chashni's," Neil answered. "But sending her to London with him when there is a possibility that his psycho sister may be there too?" sighing heavily, "Makes me worry Sammy..."

"I know. I'm worried too but I think sending Chashni with him was a better decision then sending him by himself. If I could I would have gone myself but I have my own workload. Teji and Zubin can handle some of the work Chashni had...she was practically finished with the other project...just a few touch ups. And I think it would be a nice break for them...get away from everything...especially what happened in Hrisikesh...it wasn't much of a Honeymoon reunion...with the way her father and brother were opposing like that."

"So wait they get to have a Honeymoon at the company's expense?" Neil roared. "How come we don't get one? That's not right Sammy...employers are suppose to be equal opportunity...why couldn't we have gone to London?"

"Chupe...of course I planned something. Singapore."

"Singapore?" Neil asked with eyebrows raised.

"There is a client meeting scheduled at the end of this year in Singapore," Sam replied with a wicked grin. I will be going and so will you. I've always wanted to visit Singapore."

"Awww, Mrs. Malhotra I could give you a big kiss right now!" Neil said as he leaned over puckering his lips.

"Neil! Car!" Sam shrieked as she pushed him back to the driver side. "Idiot, keep your eyes on the road!"

Neil swerved into the next lane before he rammed into the car in front of him. He honked irritably, "Why is he going so slow? We are on the highway buddy! Stupid people don't know how to drive!" He grumbled some inaudible words and then focused his attention on the road ahead. His eyes flexed in surprise when he felt his wife grab his chin to steady his head and placed a full on sloppy kiss on his cheek.

Sam giggled at the way his lips curled into a smile. "Once we make it to the office I'll give you a proper one," she promised.

"Yes Mrs. Malhotra," Neil replied with an even bigger smile.

Radhika took in the fall scenery in front of her. The colors of autumn were in full bloom as she and Arjun strolled through the park together on a chilly Tuesday afternoon. The array of orange, red, yellow, and brown leaves hanging on the trees and scattered across the ground was an indescribable sight to see. Postcards and pictures truly did not do it justice and it was something that one had to experience to understand. This had only been their second day in London and she was enjoying her time immensely.

On their first night Arjun had taken her to a nice Indian restaurant that he use to frequent when he was living and working in London. This morning they had a short meeting with the client to go over some preliminary items on the contract. The company had scheduled a factory tour tomorrow morning for them to have a more up front and personal view of the products. Over lunch at a quaint pub they decided if there was anything they saw that they could use to enhance the advertising plan that Birdsong had pitched they would. There was a scheduled Thursday late afternoon meeting followed by dinner with one of the company's project heads. Then the following Tuesday the contracts were going to be officially signed and they would then hop on a plane later that afternoon and fly back to Mumbai. The days in between Arjun had planned some fun sightseeing activities for them to do since it was her first time in London.

Arjun felt a gentle weight against his arm causing him to look to his side. Radhika had leaned her head on his shoulder and tightened her arm around his in an affectionate manner. He grinned at the gesture. They normally weren't affectionate in public but the park had been relatively sparse with people. They had been walking this particular pathway for some time and hadn't seen a single soul. "Your hand cold?"

"A little..."

"I should have gotten you gloves." Arjun sighed in disappointment at himself.

"I'll be fine. It's just one hand...the other is in my coat pocket," Radhika answered.

"Here," Arjun said as he unlink their arms. He took her hand into his and placed them in the pocket of his coat. "This should be warmer..." Radhika could feel his fingers curling tightly in between the spaces of her fingers and the tender squeeze of his hand causing her to smile. "Warmer?" She simply nodded her response. After a moment's pause Arjun teased, "Your hand is as cold as ice...its making me cold. I think we need to pick up some gloves for you. This isn't going to last very long...burr..."

"Arjun!" Radhika miffed while he chuckled. She tugged at his hand making him sway to the left bumping into her side. Arjun tugged back causing Radhika to fall into him. They did this for a few minutes making little progress down the trail but laughing loudly at their playfully tug of war game. "So, tell me more...what else are we doing?" Radhika inquired turning back to their original conversation.

"Well..." Radhika listened intently as Arjun started to rattle off interesting historical facts about some of the sites they were going to be visiting. In between, he divulged some funny anecdotes of his time in London. She laughed and smiled at his stories feeling relieved that he was enjoying himself. The past several days she could sense his stress and tension despite his efforts to verbally tell her that he was fine. She could see it in his eyes.

"Oh, we made it to the other side of the park," Radhika said.

"Yes we did," Arjun replied as they exited. He lifted his hand and motioned as a taxi appeared driving down the street. Radhika was expecting him to give the address of the hotel but instead he gave him a different one.

"Are we going to eat? It's only 4:35," Radhika inquired.

"You'll see," Arjun replied with a small smile.

******************************************************************

Radhika stared through the window watching the scenery as the taxi made its way through the streets of a London suburb. There were lines of quaint town homes on the left and right side of the street. The car slowed to a stop and parked itself in front of a middle row of red brick houses with black iron gates. While Arjun got out and paid the taxi driver the fare, Radhika made her way to the sidewalk and stared up at the houses in front of her wondering which one they were going to. She was trying to recall the house number Arjun had said.

Arjun stood on the street staring up at house number 2430 with trepidation. Caught up in his memories of the good times he had spent in the city, he had felt the sudden urge to show Radhika his London home. Now that he was actually here he was becoming uneasy and an unknown fear was seeping underneath his skin. "Arjun?" He glanced over at his wife, a gentle smile on her face as she waited for him to join her on the sidewalk. "What number is it?"

"2430," he answered as he walked forward leading the way. He pushed the iron gate open much to his surprise as he thought they usually had it locked. As he ascended the steps to the front door he began patting his pockets feeling for his keys.

Radhika stood on the stoop staring at the neighborhood and taking notice how the sun was going down fast. She rubbed her hands together trying to warm them and then turned towards her husband wondering what he was doing. Arjun was rubbing his jean pockets for the third time softly muttering, "I knew I brought them with me...wait, did I leave them at the hotel?" He rubbed his chin in thought trying his best to recall where he had kept them. "Wait...there use to be..." continuing his mumbling as he lifted a potted plant out of its ornate stone pot. His forehead creased in wonder at why the soil seemed moist as if someone had been watering it since they left. He felt a sudden uneasiness rush through his veins and the trickle of sweat running down his back.

"Looking for this?" Radhika turned in alarm at the deep British accented voice. She had never felt the presence of someone walking up behind them. She timidly smiled at the lean elderly Indian man holding up a set of house keys. There was a gentleness in his eyes that was slowly putting her at ease despite the way in which he had suddenly appeared behind them.

"Tommy Uncle?" Arjun uttered in complete surprise.

The man grinned broadly at being acknowledged and walked up the steps to give a hug. "You're looking good Arjun."

He gave a genuine smile in return and then quickly introduced, "This is Radhika, my wife."

"Wife?"

"Nice to meet you," Radhika greeted warmly.

"I'm the old caretaker here," Tommy Uncle replied. "Here let's go in...the temperature is going to drop now that the sun is setting." He opened the door and then motioned for Arjun and Radhika to step inside first.

Arjun flipped his collar up and tighten his coat around his neck as he felt the still chill air inside the house. He could see that the place looked the same as he had left it several months back. The white sheets that had been placed over the living room couches were still there but there seemed to be little to no dust on the tables and bookcases.

"I come by two to three times a week...sweep and dust a little," Tommy Uncle explained. "I took the keys from the hiding place out front. I figured it would be safer this way. How about some chai?" lifting a small bottle of milk from his coat pocket out. "I always make a little when I come here...makes it feel like the house has been lived in." Before Arjun or Radhika could say anything Tommy Uncle walked straight to the kitchen to prepare tea. The sound of a sauce pan filling with water and the spark of the gas stove lighting up could be heard.

"You've been coming every week?" Arjun said as he continued to inspect the room as if it was the first time he was seeing it.

"Yes. At the time it was undetermined how long you and your sister would be in India. So, I continued to come and check up on the house...until I am told otherwise. I haven't heard from your sister. If I had known you were coming back here I would have taken away the white sheets. It's a bit chilly right now but some garam garam chai will fix that and I'll go turn on the heat." They could hear the soft clanking of tea glasses coming out of the cupboard and the ting of a silver serving tray being placed on the counter.

Radhika walked around the room following Arjun's footsteps as he stopped to look at knick-knacks, photo frames, and books on the shelves. She looked on in curiosity wondering what memories they held for him. Her eyes sparkled as a wide grin appeared across her lips. "Is this you?" she inquired as she picked up a photo frame of a young eight year old boy holding a cricket bat.

"Yea," Arjun replied with a fond smile. "My first present I ever received...it was my eighth birthday."

"You were so cute back then," Radhika said with a giggle. "Too bad you lost all of that when you grew up...Mr Grumpy face..." Arjun gave a pouty frown at her joke while she continued to giggle.

"Tea's done!" Tommy Uncle announced as he carried the tray into the living room. "Oh, let's remove the sheets. I forgot about this," putting the tea on the table.

"Here, let me help," Radhika offered and gently started to pull the white sheets off the couch folding them neatly off to the side.

"The heat should kick in soon." As soon as those words left Tommy Uncle's mouth the dull sputtering noises of the ac turning on the heat could be heard through the vents. "There aren't any biscuits I'm afraid." He pour two cups of chai and served the first cup to Radhika. "How long will you be staying or are you moving back?"

"For about a week and half," Arjun answered as he took the cup and saucer from his hands. "I've settled in Mumbai now...made Partner at an advertising company."

"That's great...made Partner already? Congratulations! I was happy for you when I heard you were going back to India. And it sounds like you have done well for yourself. Partner...and..." smiling at Radhika, "Pyaar. When was the wedding?"

"A few months back," Radhika replied.

"It must have been a grand occasion knowing how your sister is..."

"It was a simple intimate one," Arjun stated glancing over at Radhika. "We wanted it that way."

Tommy Uncle nodded his head and smiled like he accepted the answer. But he had seen the silent exchanges between the couple and deciphered that there was probably more to the story than they were willing to tell at the moment. "How is your sister?" he inquired attempting to move the conversation along. "It has been awhile since my last communication. She's doing well?" He saw the silent exchange but remain mum pretending once again that he had no idea that anything was possibly wrong.

"She's well," Radhika simply replied for Arjun.

"I was worried for her...actually...going back...there seem to be many unpleasant memories there for her." He paused and studied Arjun and Radhika's reactions before continuing, "But glad those worries were unfounded...you've got a steady career and a wife...all is in place...the only thing left is children." Arjun shifted uncomfortably in his seat while Radhika blushed a soft pink. Tommy Uncle smiled and then inquired, "So I trust that you will be living here while you are in town?"

"We haven't made that decision yet," Arjun said.

Tommy Uncle's eyes flexed in concern, "Oh...I see. As owners of this property I think you should know recently there have been a string of break ins."

"In this neighborhood?" Radhika gasped.

"Not yet. In a neighborhood two three blocks down from here," he answered. "I had planned on checking the house everyday and possibly spending the night in the back bedroom. But now that you're in town..."

"Maybe we should stay here," Radhika said looking at her husband. Arjun just took a sip of chai in response.

Arjun stood near the doorway watching Radhika move the clothes in the suitcases into the closet and drawers of his old bedroom. He sighed remembering how she had convinced him to cancel their hotel booking for the rest of the trip and move back into his London home. She sighted many reasons such as saving money, having an actual home to come back to at the end of the day, and the concern over the string of burglaries. She was further convinced if Tommy Uncle had not been in touched with Nandini Di that she was not in London and there was little chance of them running into her.

He stepped into the room and took one of his pajama bottoms that was in a stack of clothes that had yet to be put away. Too consumed by his own thoughts and his foreboding feelings he started to change in the room. Radhika was still in the closet hanging up an arm full of clothes and was not aware of what was happening in the bedroom. She came back out and headed for a stack of night shirts that needed to be placed in the dresser drawer. Arjun was in his pajama pants now and he was still wearing his dress shirt but it was fully unbuttoned. As Radhika turned to go to the dresser Arjun came from the side and grabbed the top shirt from the stack she was carrying causing her to look up. Their eyes met and an inexplicable feeling passed through them. The temperature in the room seemed to have gone up despite the cold night air outside. Radhika's gaze naturally went down to see her husband's bare chest and then back up to his face. She could feel her cheeks growing red. Arjun had tossed his dress shirt to the side when he had reached for his t-shirt in Radhika's arms. He was standing frozen in place his hand still gripping his shirt, his muscular bicep softly touching his wife's soft skin, and his innocent gaze slowly turning into heated desire. Without a word Arjun moved his free hand and slipped it around her waist bringing her closer to him. His eyes where no longer staring into hers. They had lowered to her plush pink lips. Radhika's eyes instinctively closed in anticipation. Within seconds the clothes that had been in her arms fell softly to the wooden floor of the room scattering and covering their bare feet.

Arjun felt like he was drowning in the most uplifting way if that was even possible. His arms encircled her pulling her closer unwilling to spare any space between them. Radhika's hands had shakily touched his bare shoulders at first, timid to experience this new touch and sensation. She was both afraid and excited at this new level of intimacy they were engaging themselves in. They had kissed before but never when one was semi nude to the other. She heard him give a low possessive grunt as her hands slithered more comfortably from his shoulders up to the back of his neck. Her fingers curled themselves into his hair. The slow steady kissing was turning more passionate with each passing minute. She heard a soft moan escape from her own lips surprising herself. The knots in her stomach were churning wildly and she was steadily losing her senses. His hungry lips that had captivated her own were now trailing themselves down her neck. Feeling his haggard breath against her skin she clutched a tuff of his hair and pushed him further into her. She breathlessly called his name ready to take this to the next level. And then as suddenly as the fire had started it turned cold without warning. Her eyes opened to see Arjun picking up his t-shirt from the floor and putting it on. He bent back down and grabbed the rest of the clothing pausing briefly to glance her way before dumping the clothes on the bed. He mumbled something about water and then left the room leaving Radhika's mind and body in an extremely confused and frustrated state.

Arjun could still feel his body tingling as he walked down the stairs. He felt horrible leaving her like that. His mind had suddenly awoken him from the trance of desire he had been in and ordered him to step back. His guilty conscience was back and he was feeling like a heel. He knew he needed to come clean and talk to her about the letter but he just couldn't muster the courage to do so right now.

Part 2

Radhika smiled gently at the client as he continued to tell his funny story about the time he and his family had taken a cruise for the first time and had all gotten sea sick. A round of polite laughter went around the table at the conclusion of the tale. Arjun took the company card out of the bill holder and signed the receipt. Everyone then got up from the table ready to call it a night. They walked out of the restaurant and handed their ticket stubs to the valet parking attendant who ordered two runners to go get the cars.

"Thank you Arjun and Radhika for a lovely dinner."

"Our pleasure Mark. Thank you for the hospitality you have shown us," Arjun said as he shook his hand.

"It was our pleasure. We are extremely excited to work with Birdsong. I'll see you Tuesday for the contract signing. Take Care."

"You too," Radhika replied with warm grin. "Send our wishes to Charlotte and the kids. Hope little William feels better."

"I will and thank you. Goodnight," Mark said and then got into his car.

A few minutes later Arjun's rental car pulled up and he and Radhika got in to start their drive home. It was a silent 30 minute ride as neither spoke. The radio wasn't even turned on making things even more awkward. Awkward was probably the best way to describe the current situation in their relationship for the past two days. Neither spoke about the heated makeout session that had suddenly stopped mid-way. Most of their conversations were about work and frivolous things such as what the other one would like to eat for dinner, should they have coffee or chai in the morning, and would they be going sightseeing today.

Radhika stepped out onto road after Arjun had finished parallel parking the car and quickly made it up the sidewalk heading towards house 2430. Her body was shaking a little from the chilly night air as she reached into her purse to take out the keys. A few seconds later she was in the warm comfort of the hallway. She paid little attention to the sound of Arjun's footsteps behind her and the actions of the deadbolt locking into place. She left her heels by the shoe rack and made her way to the bedroom ready to get into her pajamas. She moved her hair to the side and reached behind her searching for the zipper to her dress. She zipped it down half way when she felt the presence of her husband behind her. Her eyes closed and her breathing went shallow when she felt his hands gripping her shoulders as his lips delicately caressed the back of her neck. Her lips curled upward in a satisfied smirk as she had suspected something like this was going to happen tonight. She had seen the way he had looked at her earlier when she had stepped out of the bedroom in her black dress. It gave her a satisfying air of confidence that she could capture his attention like that. All throughout dinner she had caught him stealing glances at her. She knew it was only a matter of time before Arjun would make his move. She sighed enjoying his affections and just when she felt him moving down her back he suddenly pulled away again. This time she was prepared and she quickly turned around grabbing a hold of his arm. "Arjun..." She saw that look in his eyes. It was the same look he had given her that night It was a mixture of guilt and fear.

"I'm sorry," he simply replied. "I-I...lost myself..."

"Don't be." She saw his gaze return in surprise. She placed her hand on his cheek and looked at him squarely, "Stop feeling guilty. Whatever it is that is holding you back...please let it go. I've already forgiven you. We agreed to start afresh."

Arjun swallowed hard and placed his hand over hers and slowly brought her hand down from his cheek, "Can you really?"

"Why are you trying to punish yourself? You're a good man," placing her hand on the left side of his chest, "You have a good heart. I know because I've seen it. I'm not asking for you to be perfect Arjun. I don't want perfect. I just want you." She saw him breathe out a heavily sigh. "Will you tell me what's bothering you? I've been noticing this for days now but I didn't say anything because I wanted to give you time to tell me yourself. If we want this to work then we have to communicate. Tell me."

Arjun inwardly grinned at her words as he recalled their first conversation about love and relationships. At that time her reply was she knew nothing about love. All she knew was friendship. Now he was looking at a woman who knew exactly want she wanted and what their relationship meant to both of them. "I wanted to talk to you about this...then this London trip...I know it isn't really a good excuse. I wanted to take one thing at a time. Obviously I wasn't handling this very well." He watched as Radhika walked away to sit down on the bed. She patted the empty spot next to her. Arjun sat down and took out his wallet. He pulled out a well folded piece of paper from an inner pocket and handed Rana Kaka's letter over for Radhika to read. He silently watched her expressions waiting for her response.

"You're feeling guilty over something that Rana Kaka confessed was his doing?' Radhika asked looking questioningly at her husband. Arjun was about to respond but then paused when she continued, "Something that Nandini Di asked him to do?" Now that she had pointedly put it in that perspective he felt a little relieved. His own irrational fears had gotten the best of him.

Radhika could see the remnants of that lost child she saw that night when his sister's truth had been revealed. He was desperately searching for someone who could love him, his innocent eyes asking her if he could have a place in her heart. Though she never replied with an answer, her actions were enough to show that she had already made a place for him. And here he was again seeking reassurance that things were going to be fine. That he truly had a place with her and this life they were starting together as husband and wife.

"Still, what happened...I was part of it," Arjun finally said. "And Dada-ji and Ma have put a lot of faith in me...and your father and brother---"

"You played no part in what happened that day. You didn't set the fire that burned our shop down. You saved me from Saral and paid the hospital bills. If anything you saved Dada-ji, my brother, and father that day," placing her hand on his cheek, "It will take some time with Papa and Ankush. But I'm here with you...you don't have to fight things alone."

Arjun gave a sad smile, "Alone...I was alone for a long time even when I thought I wasn't."

"I'll never leave you. I'm with you for the rest of my life...come what may..." then grinning mischievously, "and for seven life times...so be prepared...you may get tired of this silly girl."

"Never," Arjun replied shaking his head. "I welcome all seven." Radhika leaned over and gave him a comforting hug. Arjun breathed deeply as he felt a huge weight lifting off his shoulders. His hands lazily moved down her back exposing itself to her soft bare skin. His tender caressing was causing Radhika's breathing to go shallow. Arjun slowly moved his head letting his cheek slide against her cheek before he took his other hand and cupped her right cheek. His eyes gazed softly into her brown eyes thankful for this moment in time with her. He gently kissed her lips relishing the feeling. His free hand wandered on its own accord rubbing itself against her back, eventually bringing the rest of the zipper down.

It didn't take long for the things to heat up between the two. The strap to Radhika's dress was nearly falling off her shoulder as Arjun was becoming increasingly passionate with his movements. His head dipped downwards letting his nose sensuously trail down the side of her neck. He nibbled her collar bone causing her to take in a shaky breath, "Ar-jun..." With her words he found himself suddenly being pulled back into his senses. He lifted his head and saw the state that they were in and started to back away. "Arjun, don't..." Radhika's hands were holding onto his wrists preventing him from pulling away.

"But we said we take things slow," he replied. "If I don't stop now..."

"I want this..." She saw his facial expression change into surprised but she could tell he was still holding himself back. "Make me yours tonight..." And with that one line Arjun's resolve broke. He passionately kissed her and laid her down on the soft bed holding her tightly. He recalled the night he had challenged her in making their marriage real by fulfilling her wifely duty to him. The look in her eyes at that time was complete fear. He had backed away because he did not want their first time to be something forced. He wanted her to make this choice freely without his pressure. As he looked at her now, he saw that she had the same desire as he was feeling in her eyes. He tenderly kissed her forehead, then each eye, before capturing her lips once more. The intensity of the situation was increasing with each kiss and touch they took from each other. Tonight was a night they were going to remember forever.

**************************************************************

Arjun hazily lifted his eye lids and then placed his hand over his face blocking the gentle rays of sunlight streaming through the bedroom window. A silhouette soon appeared blocking the light making him grin sleepily. He rubbed his eyes and turned onto his back pulling down the bed sheet as he did so. He could hear the sound of the blinds being closed and soft footsteps moving about the room. He opened his eyes and saw his wife in a white bathrobe and her hair tied up in a towel. He grinned when she removed the towel and her damp tresses fell onto her shoulders. As if sensing that he was looking at her, she turned around and gave a shy smile. "Good Morning," Arjun greeted as he sat up from the bed. She was generally the one who was extremely chirpy in the morning but today it was amusing to see her a little more subdued.

"Good Morning. I made chai," Radhika replied. Arjun saw the tray of tea resting on the small table by the window. He looked down the side of the bed trying to find his discarded boxer briefs from the previous night. "Looking for these?" His eyes lifted to see Radhika holding up a fresh new pair of boxers. "I picked up the clothes and put them in the laundry basket," walking over handing him the piece of clothing. "Arjun!" she gasped as he grabbed her wrist pulling her back down the bed. He gave a naughty grinned as Radhika pushed herself up on her hands while their faces were inches from each other. He titled his head up trying to place a kiss. His lips were met with the palm of her hand making him furrow his eyebrows in protest. "Brush your teeth first," Radhika instructed before she quickly hopped off the bed.

"Can I have my underwear?" Arjun asked innocently.

"Only if you behave."

"And if I don't?" he replied with a suppressed smirk.

"Then..." Radhika shrugged as she turned around.

"I guess that doesn't leave me with much of a choice." She heard him say before she heard the rustling of the bed sheet. Her eyes widened in alarm when she felt his presence by her side. "Arjun!" she yelled as she closed her eyes turning to face him.

"What? And what are you doing?" Radhika slowly opened one eye and glanced down. He had wrapped the bed sheet around his waist. "Were you expecting something else? Because..." slowly pulling one side of the gray fabric away from his side attempting to open his makeshift cover.

"No," Radhika answered and turned around in embarrassment causing Arjun to chuckle.

"This coming from someone who saw everything last night," he whispered into her ear. "By the way, you're very beautiful when you blush." Radhika felt her cheeks flush deeper and she timidly bit her lower lip. Arjun placed a tender kiss on the side of her head and then left to freshen up for the day.

Fifteen minutes later Arjun refreshed from his shower but still wrapped in the bed sheet walked into his bedroom to find his wife quietly drinking her tea staring out the window. He grinned widely at this scene knowing that he was the only man who had the privilege of seeing her like this. Her dark tresses resting against her shoulder while she had one leg slightly bent making the slit of the already short bathrobe open exposing part of her thigh. His eyes darkened as sudden memories of last night revived themselves. He could still see and feel how he had explored every inch of her pure bare form. He blinked when she turned her head towards him giving him small smile.

"How are you feeling?" he gently inquired as he walked over. Radhika made a movement to put her feet down when he motioned her not to. He sat on the cushioned window sill pulling her feet up so they rested in his lap. He shivered a little when he leaned back against the cold wood panel.

"Arjun, you're going to catch a cold. Go put on some clothes."

"And whose fault is that?" He replied with a childish tone.

"You're free to go change," she said motioning with her eyes towards the closet. Arjun simply ignored her, content to sit in his makeshift outfit. He gently ran his fingers long the soles of her feet making her giggle. "I'm a little sore," she said finally answering his initial question. Noticing his concern reaction she added, "Nothing I can't handle." She placed the empty tea cup on the table and then made herself comfortable on his lap hugging his bare torso as she laid her head on his shoulder. His voice rumbled in her ears, "I wasn't too rough was I? I didn't mean to be."

"You weren't," Radhika replied lifting her head up with a reassuring smile. She tenderly caressed the stubble on his jaw line and then kissed his cheek. "I love you." She saw his face light up in reaction to her words making her grin wider.

Arjun lovingly ran his fingers against her cheek before slipping them into her hair. It was still slightly damp but drying nicely. It had this natural waviness to it. He was appreciating how it was framing her face and making her all the more irresistible like she had looked last night. "I have a confession to make..." touching his forehead with hers, "Last night was probably one of the best nights of my life."

Radhika gave a bashful smile in return and replied, "Mine as well." She could feel his breath fanning her face as he started to delicately move his lips closer to her mouth. She titled upward allowing them to be captured. "Are we going sightseeing today?" she mumbled against his lower lip. She knew it was a silly question to ask at this moment especially since Arjun's hand had found its way underneath her bathrobe and was tenderly massaging her thigh.

"Sightseeing...hmm...Mr. Mehra's sightseeing tour," he replied in a half intoxicated state.

"Is this a tour Mrs. Mehra going to enjoy?"

"She seemed to enjoyed it last night," Arjun replied. "Unless she isn't in the mood." He soon found his arms empty and the comforting weight of his wife gone from his lap. He looked up at her questioningly. "Radhika?"

"Close the blinds please." Arjun got up and did as he was told. He then walked over to her wondering what her decision was. She wrapped her arms behind his head and nervously bite her bottom lip. He motioned with his eyes to tell him what was on her mind. "Would you mind if we take a rain check? It's just the past two days we haven't done very much."

Letting out a soft chuckle, "I don't mind. Whatever you want." He grinned when she gave him an excited hug and a big kiss before running to the closet to get dressed. He rubbed the back of his head giving himself an amused half grin. His eyes lifted in attention when he heard his wife's voice. He turned to see her popping her head out of the closet. "Tonight..."

"Tonight?"

"I promise tonight," Radhika replied. "Rain check will be cashed in tonight." She flashed a smile and then disappeared back into the closet. Arjun grinned at her words and then went to his mobile phone to see what was next on their sightseeing list.

**************************************************************

Radhika giggled as she ran through the front door of the house. "I win!" The past four days had been enjoyable beyond compare. Their days were spent exploring the city while their nights were spent locked in their bedroom making sweet love to each other. Arjun rushed in behind her shouting, "You cheated...you tricked me!" He grabbed her waist and pulled her back against his chest gently nuzzling her ear. Realizing she wasn't reacting to his affection he looked at her to see what was wrong. He followed her line of sight and froze to see his sister standing at the top of the staircase.

"Hello Arjun...Radhika," she greeted and started to make her descent.

Radhika removed Arjun's arm from around her waist while Arjun took a few steps back, both feeling embarrassed that they had been caught. They were also in shock seeing Nandini in the flesh standing in the hallway of their London home. Neither could find words to express themselves at the moment.

"It seems I returned at the wrong time," Nandini continued. "I had no idea that you would be in London. Honeymoon?"

"Business..." Radhika was the first to answer. "We're here to sign a contract with a client for Birdsong. We had a few days free..."

"I see," Nandini replied. She looked at her brother who looked extremely disinterested in why she was there.

"Um, I'll make some chai." Radhika didn't make if very far as Arjun grabbed her wrist forcing her to stay where she was. She looked at him questioningly while he sharply stated, "There's no need."

"Forgive me for intruding in my own home," Nandini said. "I'll go check into a hotel."

"No," Radhika said making Arjun look at her like she had lost it. "Talk to her," she whispered.

"There isn't anything to talk about," Arjun replied through gritted teeth. Radhika ignored his comment and walked away to make tea. "I said all I had to say that night," Arjun reaffirmed once they were alone.

"I left like you asked me to," Nandini answered. "I truly did not know that you would be in London. It's the truth for what it's worth."

Arjun let out an amused chuckle, "Truth? Have you ever told a single truth before?"

"Right, lies. All I ever say are lies..."

"You said it not me," Arjun replied. "You made me believe in every thing...sab kuch...and all of it turned out to be some grandiose illusion of an affair that probably was one sided from the beginning!"

Nandini stood still while silent tears welled in her eyes as the words coming from her brother pierced her like daggers. The pain she had caused him was now being inflicted upon her. The wounds of her broken heart that had never properly healed were rubbed raw again. Those were some dark times and he had witnessed it all when he was still a young impressionable boy. Something she had eventually taken advantage of and used for her own cruel means. She had given him hope, love, and a place to come home to. She was his mother. His father. His sister. His family. His everything. But her greed for revenge had taken her further and further away and in the end destroyed their relationship. Her revenged achieved but with little to show for it. She was now left alone and cold once more.

"I admit my need for revenge consumed me," Nandini softly spoke.

"And it nearly took me down with you." Arjun sighed in frustration. "Until Radhika saved me."

"Radhika..." Nandini's eyes widen in alarm at the way her brother coldly stared her down.

"Don't you dare say anything against her." Arjun was burning at the flippant tone she had use to say his wife's name. "She is Mrs. Radhika Mehra, my wife...and I will not tolerate it if anyone disrespects her."

Nandini simply nodded in response. "I know I do not have any right to say anything to you and you probably would not care to say anything more to me either...but this time I have spent since I left...I've reflected a lot...and I'm sorry Arjun."

"Sorry?"

"I'm sorry for causing you pain." Nandini clarified.

"Sorry? Sorry for the past 20 years? Sorry for treating me like some toy or machine that you could order around? Sorry for lying to me? Sorry for using me? Sorry for betraying my trust? Sorry for all the lies and cruel things you planned that never came to fruition because you were caught? Sorry for all the lies and cruel things that I never knew about nor do I care to because it would just make me hate you even more? Sorry for mistreating Radhika? Sorry for threatening her? Sorry for burning down the Mishra shop?" Arjun sternly nodded his head as he saw the twinge of fear in her eyes. "That's right. I found out. Rana Kaka confessed that he had made the arrangements to burn down the shop in Hrisikesh. How disgustingly low did you have to get? To do this just so you could get rid of her?"

"She was snooping around too much...getting in the way. And I saw how she was affecting you...taking you away from a plan that I waited 20 years to execute...I was desperate."

"Taking me away...affecting me...so you couldn't even see...understand that your brother was falling in love? Instead of supporting him...you convinced him...used his blind faith in you to focus on a revenge plan...that was really for no benefit but your own."

"At the time, yes," Nandini agreed sadly.

"Great," clapping his hands with sarcasm, "The Best Sister of the Year Award."

Nandini stood there seeing the anger in his eyes reflect the sharp words he was speaking. Their last conversation was heated but short. At the time Arjun was more hurt by her betrayal than anything and his words reflected the sorrow of a relationship that could no longer be. She had been defensive and angry that everything had just fallen apart. Now that some time had passed and the reality of the situation had sunk in she was feeling remorseful.

"Arjun, I can't make up for what happened."

"You're right you can't."

"But I...I do want you to be happy..."

"Then leave," Arjun curtly replied and ascended the stairs without so much as a glance back.

Nandini stared at her brother's retreating back and sighed knowing the damage that had been inflicted was beyond repair. She heard the soft rattling of tea cups and turned to see Radhika carrying out a tray of chai from the kitchen. The two women just silently looked at each other unsure how to proceed next.

**************************************************************

Radhika gently opened the bedroom door and saw her husband sitting at the edge of the bed facing the windows of the room. She walked over and tenderly placed her hand on his shoulder as she stood in front of him. She could see the evidence of dried tears on his cheeks. "Arjun," she softly said. He reached out and hugged her waist burying his head into her stomach. She lovingly ran her hand through his hair trying her best to comfort him. "Why did she have to return?" he mumbled. "Everything was going so well. She promised to walk away." Radhika remained silent unable to think of a suitable reply to his question. "It hurts. It still hurts...and I'm angry that she still has an effect on me. I shouldn't care what happens."

"We feel more pain when someone we love the most hurts us," Radhika simply stated. Arjun lifted his head up and stared into her eyes. "Sometimes the people we love the most hurt us the most."

Shaking his head, "I hate her. I hate her so much. She doesn't deserve anything from me...sympathy...care...forgiveness..."

"If she didn't mean anything to you then you wouldn't be so hurt by her actions," Radhika replied.

Arjun scowled and looked away. "She doesn't mean anything to me. I can't forgive her for what she did. I can't forgive her for what she tried to do to you."

"I'm not telling you or asking you to," Radhika said placing her hand on his chin turning him back towards her. She saw his eyes soften and she tenderly said his name, "Arjun."

"I'm sorry," he replied. "I didn't mean to get angry at you. You're my family now. Dada-ji, your mother...and your father, your brother...even though they aren't too thrilled with me right now...but I'll change that...trust me...and your sister...that's my family now. And I'll try my best to be a better man..."

"Arjun..."

"Not because you're asking me to because I know you wouldn't. It's what I want to do because you deserve so much more. I'll love you until my last breath. That's a promise."

Radhika cupped his cheek and gave him a tender kiss on his forehead, "I know you will," then holding his hands in her own, "Let's go to bed."

Arjun got up and turned down the comforter while Radhika went to the wall to switch off the light. Even in the dark Radhika could still find her way to the bed. She slipped underneath the covers and turned towards her husband who was inching his way over to her side of the bed. She felt his arm wrap around her waist as he rested his head on her chest. A small smile spread across her lips as she recalled that night Arjun held onto her as he slept. It was a bittersweet memory. It was the first time they had let the barriers come down and openly let themselves feel what they wanted to say to each other for so long but couldn't because of the complications in their lives. Radhika lovingly cradled Arjun in her arms rubbing his back in a soothing motion before falling asleep.

**************************************************************

Smacking his lips a few times before sleepily opening his eyes, Arjun tapped the bed with his right hand expecting to feel Radhika by his side. When he felt nothing but empty space he shot up and looked around the room hoping to see her. He didn't know why he was acting this way but recalling how his sister had suddenly showed up last night the seed of fear was beginning to grow inside of him. Did something happened to his wife? "Radhika?" He called out as he flipped the covers and opened the bedroom door. "Radhika?" When he didn't hear any response he panicked and started to race down the stairs. "Radhika?" he called out again. As he neared the last few steps his feet were moving faster than he could control. He tripped tumbling down the stairs with a thud. He groaned in pain and soon felt a warm hand touch him. "Radhika..." he heaved. When his eyes finally identified the person by his side he shifted himself away despite feeling a throbbing all over the right side of his body.

Nandini felt helpless as she stared at her brother who was in obvious pain but refusing her assistance. His eyes were looking at her with fearful loathing yet desperately searching for someone dear to him.

"Radhika," he gasped, "Where is she? What did you do to her? Why are you still here?"

"I didn't do anything," Nandini honestly replied. "She insisted I stay last night since you would be leaving today after the contract signing. I really do not know where she is. I just got up and then I heard you fall down the stairs. Arjun, are you all right? Do you hurt anywhere?" Arjun pushed himself up so he was now sitting on the floor. He cringed a little and touched the side of his cheek. He could feel that the skin there had broken. "Maybe we should go to the doctor. If not for me at least for Radhika." Nandini desperately advised.

They both turned their heads when they heard the front door opening. Tommy Uncle and Radhika were holding grocery bags as they entered the house. Radhika's eyes lit in alarm at seeing Arjun on the floor. He looked a bit disoriented and bruised. "Arjun?! What happened?" Dropping the grocery bags onto the floor she rushed towards her husband to begin inspecting him.

"He fell down the stairs," Nandini explained.

"Are you okay?" touching his cheek and when he winced she gave an apologetic expression. "I'm sorry. Can you stand?"

"He's been calling for you. I suggested going to the doctor's to make sure he's okay."

"I think that's an excellent idea, "Tommy Uncle answered. "Come," he walked over to Arjun and helped him get on his feet.

"I'm fine." Arjun said.

"No, I'm not taking any chances," Radhika replied with worry.

"But we have the contract signing."

"I think they will understand. It's still early enough in the morning. We can postpone it for later in the afternoon if we have to," Radhika replied.

"Where did you go?"

"I went with Tommy Uncle to get some groceries," she answered as she grabbed his coat from off the coat rack as they exited the house.

"Why? We're leaving today," he questioned.

Radhika glanced over at Nandini and then looked away. "Tommy Uncle, here are the keys to the car," handing them over to him.

**************************************************************

"Thank you for being so understanding about this. Yes, I'll let you know as soon as he's out and how he's doing. Thank you." Radhika breathed a sigh of relief as she hung up the phone.

"Everything's being taken care of?" She looked at Nandini and nodded. "He should be out soon from the C.T. scan. Everything is going to be all right."

"Yes of course...he's going to be all right...everything is going to be all right," Radhika repeated. Nandini placed her hand on her hand in an attempt to provide some comfort and understanding. She could see how worried she was looking. She pulled her hand away when she saw the uneasy and surprised look in her eyes.

"You didn't have to go get groceries. I could have done that myself," Nandini said. "Arjun was extremely worried when he discovered you weren't at the house this morning."

"We needed some things anyways...I was just picking up a few more items...after all we were in your house," Radhika replied.

"Our house," Nandini corrected. "It's as much as yours as Arjun's...you are Mrs. Radhika Mehra, the wife of Arjun Mehra...you are part of the family now."

Radhika didn't know how to respond to her words and could only muster a, "Thank you." It was a bit disconcerting to see her acting rather proper with her considering the type of relationship they had in the beginning. This was the same individual that had put shards of glass in the red vermilion milk paste when she was performing the Girha Pravesh to welcome her into the household.

"I know this may not sound very sincere but I do mean it...Thank you for taking care of my brother. I know he's in good hands. And I'll stand by my promise to never interfere in your lives again."

Radhika looked at the woman standing in front of her and could see that those last words she had said had been real. As many lies and stories she had crafted over the last several months this was probably the truest statement she had ever given. Her love for her brother was real.

"Excuse me, Mrs. Mehra?" a nurse greeted causing both Radhika and Nandini to look in her direction.

"Yes?" Radhika answered.

"Mr. Mehra is finished with his C.T. scan. He's in room 223...down the hallway."

"Thank you." Radhika replied and started to briskly walk down the hallway. Nandini followed closely behind but then restrained herself from walking into the room. She stood at the edge of the doorway and watched as Radhika entered and the door slowly swinging shut.

Nestled in the corner section of the British Airways business lounge Arjun sat comfortably in an armchair checking his email on his cell phone. He lifted his head when he felt the presence of his wife holding two cups of coffee. "Why are you on your phone?" she inquired sternly.

Arjun took one of the cups offered him and took a refreshing sip. "I wanted to get a head start on all the emails that must have stacked up today. The doctor said I was fine...no concussion..just some bruising. Which should heal in the next few days. I'm fine Radhika. I really wished you hadn't told the office."

"It was a little hard not to especially since they already knew the contract sighing was suppose to happen at 9:00am. Also if we hadn't then Piyali Ma'am wouldn't have been able to rearrange our flight schedule for us while we were in the hospital. At least now we are sitting in business class."

"There was nothing wrong with premium economy. It was definitely roomier than economy," Arjun replied.

"Well, now you can stretch out and sleep more comfortably. The doctor said to take proper rest. It's at least a 8 to 9 hour flight...and we're flying so late at night. You'll put your phone away?"

Arjun chuckled, "Yes, I'll put my phone away..." he paused as he saw her relax and then cheekily added, "once we board." He watched as his wife's eyes narrowed in protest and replied, "Radhika, I'm fine. I'm only checking email or would you prefer I play games on the mobile instead?"

"You're not working tomorrow right?"

"Of course...I'll spend all day in bed," Arjun replied with a smile, "With my wife." He saw how her cheeks turned a soft pink and arched his eyebrow, "All I said was bed. You said I should be resting." Radhika looked away embarrassed and took a sip of her coffee. "So, you went and bought groceries this morning for her?"

"We were running low on some things that I needed to make breakfast. Tommy Uncle came to help me. I just happened to pick up a few extra items...th-that's all."

"You're a horrible lair," Arjun simply replied giving his wife the eye. "How do you do this? How can you be so kind? How can you forgive just like that?"

"All I did was buy groceries. And we were using the house without her knowledge. She just came home. I haven't completely forgotten what she did or tried to do. But if you think about it she became her own victim. She was alone before and now she's still alone. In a way it's sad. But you reap what you sow. I have made peace with it...that was the past. Now is the present and tomorrow will be the future. I guess you can say it's my weakness...I'm just silly and naive."

Arjun placed his hand on hers, "On the contrary I think you have a remarkable strength. It takes a lot to forgive. Maybe one day I'll learn how to."

Serene silence filled the air as the moon hung low during the wee hours of a weekend night in the city of Mumbai. The Mehra household stood firm and strong underneath the pale moonlight. Arjun was tip-toeing into the kitchen searching for a late night treat. He opened the freezer looking for a carton of chocolate ice cream but frowned when he couldn't find it. He could have sworn they had one. "It's finished." He turned to see his wife standing behind him with an apologetic half grin. "But, I made chocolate pudding. It's in the fridge...in the red container in the back."

Arjun opened the door and smiled. It was right where she had said it would be. He turned to see Radhika taking out some bowls and spoons for them. He placed the container on the counter and gave each bowl a nice serving. "Arjun, aren't you cold?" eyeing her husband who was only wearing his pajama pants.

Arjun arched one eyebrow and replied, "Asks the person wearing my shirt." He smirked. Even in the dusky night he could see the formation of a blush forming on her cheeks as she bit her lower lip timidly. "I could take it back, but then where does that leave you? And you know I wouldn't allow you to get cold," slipping his hand around her waist pulling her tightly into him in a suggestive manner, "I'd cover you...and you know where that leads..."

"Ar-Ar-jun..." Radhika shakily responded. He grinned and shoved a spoonful of chocolate pudding into her mouth. Radhika took the spoon from his hand as he backed away and started to eat from his own bowl.

They settled themselves on the living room couch. They had done some major redecorating the past few weeks. Replacing some of the dated furniture with more urban comfort items. Their couches were leather now. The coffee table was wood with a section of inlay glass in the middle. They had placed various pictures of their time in London, group family photos, and fun pics from work underneath the glass adding a personal touch and feel to the coffee table. It was one of Radhika's favorite pieces they had acquired. They changed out the old lamps and side tables to pieces that would matched with the new dcor. They were now in the process of deciding what to do with the dining room area. Eventually they would be renovating the kitchen, but that was a big budget project that they knew they needed to save funds for before tackling it.

Radhika leaned her back against the arm of the couch and jubilantly ate the chocolate pudding. Her legs were resting comfortably on Arjun's lap. "When did you suddenly start developing a sweet tooth?" she inquired looking at her husband who had nearly devoured all of his pudding.

He shrugged his shoulders. "Probably when a certain Chashni appeared in my life." He grinned at the way she was looking at him and motioned that she had a smudge of chocolate on the side of her mouth. She used her thumb to clean it away. He waited until she was done sucking on her thumb and then leaned forward kissing the same spot. "You missed a little," he replied licking his lips. Radhika cupped his neck and brought him in again giving him a few more tender kisses. The sweet bliss of the taste of chocolate and her husband warmed her body.

"So, parents are coming next week..." Arjun said as he leaned his bare back against the cool leather.

"Nervous?" Radhika replied. "You know Ma adores you."

"I'm not worried about her. It's Papa. He still doesn't like me much."

"I know my Papa...he's tough on the outside but he's got a soft heart. Like my..." Radhika replied with a gentle giggle, "Pati dev..." Arjun just replied with a half grin. "Give it some time...just be yourself...everything will be fine. Are you going to be watching TV serials with Ma again?"

"I just happen to sit in the living room when she watches them. And you do it too...what is it that she watches? Saathiya...Yeh Rishta...whatever..."

"Lair," Radhika replied flexing her feet. "I caught you once watching it on Saturday by yourself."

"I wasn't watching it. I was watching the news," Arjun pouted.

"Only after I came into the room did you change the channel. I know you were watching because I was wondering where the hysterical shouting of Meera and Kokila Behen 'Mera Vada' dialogues were coming from."

"How do you know the character's name?" Arjun asked suspiciously.

"Ob-obviously I picked them up when Ma's here. That Girl just shouts all the time and that Lady is a little hard not to remember with all the dramatic dialogues she's given. That show is overly dramatic. I can't believe Ma watches that show."

"It's a time pass for her. When she's prepping for dinner...she just turns it on like noise in the background. She told me once," Arjun explained. "Finished?" Radhika nodded and gave her empty bowl to her husband. He got up and went to the sink to do the dishes. She waited off on the side with a hand towel ready for him. Arjun dried his hands and then reached out to his wife's waiting hand. Radhika giggled as he pulled her backwards so her back rested against his chest. His hand rested on top of hers. His fingers slipping between the grooves of her fingers bending down into a tight hand hold. He moved his right foot to the side causing her to sway with him before moving his left foot forward swaying to the other side as they walked in a teeter-totter fashion towards their bedroom. Arjun gently nuzzled her ear, "I want my shirt back now."

As the bedroom door closed behind them Arjun felt a comforting calm at how their relationship was moving forward. They received some closure in London with Nandini Di, Radhika's parents were coming next week to bridge the gap of trust, and they had taken their relationship to the next level of intimacy. He knew there would be many more nights of pleasures and many more mornings waking up in each other's arms. They were together in this and as long as they worked together they could weather any storm that life could throw their way.

So, before you throw rotten tomatoes in my direction. Let me explain why I brought Nandini back. She was crazy for sure. She had lost her mental balance because of her broken heart and her need to avenge herself from something she thought had been a real relationship. Whether it was one sided or something that Samrat indulged in and made false promises to her we will never know. I am pretty sure if the serial had continued we would have seen some sort of redemption track for Nandini Di.

I thought it was important for the characters get some closure. To me Arjun never really got that. He was too hurt to really process anything. He simply told Nandini if she really loved him she would just leave. Which she did. But he never really had a chance to properly grieve this loss because the next day Radhika left him. He was too frantic trying to find the only other person that ever mattered in his life.

I wanted to play with the concept of 7 stages of mourning. (1.Shock & Denial, 2.Pain & Guilt, 3.Anger & Bargaining, 4.Depression, reflection, loneliness, 5.The upward turn, 6.Reconstruction & working through, 7.Acceptance & Hope) For Arjun this is an end of a 20 year relationship. It's not easy to break ties especially if that person was like family. Nandini was his only family. Even though he had called her Didi, she was really a mother and father to him as well. It isn't an easy thing to go through and you can't expect the person to be suddenly fine the next day. So I wanted to show that struggle within himself.

As for Radhika's behavior, it is mentioned in the last episode by Sam when Arjun was worried about being forgiven that Radhika has a big heart and the ability to forgive. Some people find that as a weakness but to me that is Radhika's biggest strength. Just because she forgives doesn't mean she forgets. She's mature enough to see the situation as it is. She told Arjun once that if Samrat was guilty then he should be punished not Sam, who is an innocent bystander in all of this. Radhika never agreed with Nandini's tactics. She's the type of person who likes to tackle things straight on.
