Pyar Deewana Hota Hai was a movie released in 2002 starring Govinda and Rani Mukherjee.
To help people jog their memory, this movie was about a guy named Sunder (Govinda), an uneducated painter from a village, who meets an America returned girl named Payal (Rani) hailing from a rich family.
Despite Payal being out of his league, she gives Sunder time of her day because he "lies" to her by acting like a dumb guy. She befriends Sunder feeling pity on him.
They both fall in love with each other while Sunder continues to act like a guy who can't speak. Later on he feels so guilty about his lie seeing Payal being madly in love with him, that he slices his tongue making himself permanently mute, as a punishment for his betrayal.
The whole movie is kind of below average except that shocking ending which makes it stand out both in a good and bad way. At first it feels like the director only went for such a shocking and sad ending for cheap thrills.
But on a repeat watch, it makes complete sense on why Sunder would take such a drastic step. He didn't lie to Payal deliberately. It was a misunderstanding, which made Payal to think that he can't speak.
He kept that lie going because he didn't want to loose her friendship. There are many Bollywood movies where the hero lies to the heroine to get her love, and in the end she forgives him without making him suffer any consequences.
In this movie, the hero actually suffers the consequences of his lie. So do you think what happened to Sunder, he deserved it?
Because when Payal got to know about Sunder's truth that he could speak, she easily forgives him because of being blindly in love. But Sunder couldn't forgive himself because according to him, he needed to repent for his sin.
