Madhuri's prime era was a time when BW wasn't into women centric movies. Actresses were more like glam dolls limited to looking good on-screen and dancing and running behind the heros. Movies like Black would have never been made in Madhuri's prime era. Still she made a mark in most of her roles in terms of acting. Anjaam is the proof. She didn't make good choices after her comeback though.
Rani paved her own way with her talent despite lacking the conventional looks of a BW heroine.
So I will say both are more or less on the same level in terms of acting, but Rani got better roles to showcase her acting.

Madz did best with the roles she was given. She has better facial expression than ANY other actress. Her roles for me are so memorable ( not just the dancer/Chandramukhi type, but from police officer to, well, anything, rom com, action, drama.. she's just fascinating to watch).

Rani 's only outstanding character, for me, is Black. The rest are okay to great but forgetabble.

Madz for me has aura/charisma by bucketloads.. Rani is like Aloo of past days- spate of good roles but not havimng the aura to attract - of course, IMO.

Madhuri's act was poor in woman oriented films like Gulab Gang and Dedh Ishqiya.

Obviously Rani ...Madhuri was just a dancing star...which great acting performance is she remembered for ? She is remembered for her dances.

Rani is a very good actress, i like her but even she won't agree with u. Madhuri is Madhuri. Watch some films of hers, unfortunately as Rani said films were not as happening then as now. Madhuri is the best actor in 100 yrs is said by Ashok Kumar. Mahesh Bhatt said directors are limited not her. Madhuri is both intelligent and emotional actress.
