Today i saw the news about Urmila doing an item number in Irrfan Khan's movie Blackmail.. so i was wondering what went wrong in Urmila's career that she failed to become a big star like her contemporaries?

She had the gorgeous movie star looks & body, great dancer, outstanding actress, gave successful movies on her own (Bhoot, Pyar Tune Kya Kiya etc)..

So why she failed to make it big? Because she dint work much with the Khans? But then Aishwarya also didn't work much with the Khans yet made it big.. so what went wrong for Urmila? Thoughts?

But most of her movies with RGV are both commercial & critical success & regarded among her best performances like Kaun, Bhoot, Pyar Tune Kya Kiya, Jungle, Ek Hasina Thi, Satya etc.

RGV also gave Urmila her biggest blockbuster in Rangeela. So IMO her association with RGV rather helped her.

People perceived her more for her glamor and dances than acting ? Sometimes if someone if very good in something in tends to overshadow others.

She peaked at a time where older actresses had no opportunities. Shes also not as well-connected as Tabu is to land projects.

I feel like she kind of gave up herself.

My parents would say the opposite. She can't play regular characters only crazy people.

First you have to define what you mean by "making it big" - then I can answer the question.

She was considered a top a-list star from 1995-2005. She had hit films, hit songs, fan following, critical acclaim and plenty of awards.

I think she's a very versatile actress & played variety of roles. If you think she can't play regular character, then you need to watch Khubsoorat, Hum Tumpe Marte Hai, Satya, Pinjar etc etc.

I mentioned it in the first para, failed to make it big as her contemporaries / other big stars like Aishwarya, Sridevi, Madhuri, Kajol, Rani, Karishma etc etc who at one point of time ruled as the no.1 actress. Urmila was never the number 1 actress as them.. even though she had all the qualities to become one.
