I think she made it big, Is one of the most versatile actress , Some of RGV's best movies starred Urmila. She is a good dancer, good actor, Just she was not part of Johar,Chopra clan and that's why she was not that hyped

Urmila's fault was that once she reached the top she more or less exclusively worked with RGV. Once he lost interest in her he stopped giving her lead roles. She too became a recluse at her peak refusing to meet the media or other industry folks.

While she did have a few good movies, in general looking back she overacts a lot.

I think she did well for herself. How many child actors can get the fame she got without being a star kid? Essentially she was aged out like all the female stars. Not even Rani, Madhuri, Rekha etc who reached peak stardom could sustain their careers.

I don't find her beautiful at all but yes she is talented. She should have done at least one YRF or Dharma film during her peak. That would have hyped her.

Why do u think being a so called number one is the be a or done all thing for an actress and otherwise she didn't make it big?
Akshay Kumar has never in his career been the number one. There has always been a male actor who would have been number one at the time. But it can never take away from the factor Akshay is a super successful actor who made it all! And I can give lists of male names who fall in this category like Ajay and HR etc.
Why is it for actresses this one number one spot and if they don't make it they aren't considered successful? Why can't many of them coexist like men do

If an actress had a career span of 8+ yrs and continued to get lead roles for that time, and commercial success at least once in two yrs during that time I'd consider that a successful BW career.
Right now actresses shelf life is thankfully getting much longer to 15+ yrs as solo leads and hopefully will continue to do like male actors have managed but as of yet I'd consider Urmila a success (I'm not a fan as I started watching movies a little after her peak time)

I guess she didn't manage to stay relevant.
I was a kid in the early 2000s and I only knew her name in passing so that's that.

Aish on the other hand was (is?) very controversial and her controversies keeps her relevant.

Urmila worked exclusively for RGV during the peak of her career m she was never part of Chopra or Johar banner. Besides she herself never paid much attention toward her own career. Once RGV replaced her with other actresses, she stopped doing anything in general

I mentioned it in the first para, failed to make it big as her contemporaries / other big stars like Aishwarya, Sridevi, Madhuri, Kajol, Rani, Karishma etc etc who at one point of time ruled as the no.1 actress. Urmila was never the number 1 actress as them.. even though she had all the qualities to become one.

No, you didn't.

This is your first post:

Today i saw the news about Urmila doing an item number in Irrfan Khan's movie Blackmail.. so i was wondering what went wrong in Urmila's career that she failed to become a big star like her contemporaries?

She had the gorgeous movie star looks & body, great dancer, outstanding actress, gave successful movies on her own (Bhoot, Pyar Tune Kya Kiya etc)..

So why she failed to make it big? Because she dint work much with the Khans? But then Aishwarya also didn't work much with the Khans yet made it big.. so what went wrong for Urmila? Thoughts?

You asked why she failed to make it big. But she did make it big. Very big. Not as big as Aishwarya, no. But "luck" plays a huge factor. You can be the most beautiful, most talented, most hard working, but without being in the right place at the right time, or "luck" or whatever you want to call it, it simply won't work.
