I think UCC can and should work in India just as it does in most western nations.

There should not be separate marriage, divorce, inheritance, adoption laws based on religion. I think the UCC is more for simplifying the civic legal structure from the confusing communal present structure.

...

I think India could do very well to adopt such an equivalent legal structure. Although, minorities have valid reason to be wary because certain majority politicians are known to undermine minority interests.

Ideally.

Goa has common family law with provisions to some. I don't see UCC implementation a reality in India because of divisive politics.

Thanks to Portuguese common law and freedom from India until 1961. Goans were happy to grab a bottle of feni and sleep under a coconut tree. Then all of a sudden one day Indians landed on the beach and said "You're free". OK India, as long as you let us keep the feni and coconut tree.

What about Hindus born in India, in Bombay, Maharashtra who want to eat beef?

What about vegetarians who were born in India and demand to ban all meat and animal products?

What about atheists born in India who want to ban religion?

How many "sentiments" can we appease?

The solution is simple.

Want to eat beef? Eat.
Don't want to eat beef? Don't. Don't even patronize beef serving restaurants. Many vegetarians don't enter a restaurant unless it is pure veg.

Lets agree to disagree here. No, the solution is not simple and it will never be simple.

Don't we patronize and mock them for their religious beliefs? Yet somehow we are allowed to preach to them about "don't want to eat beef don't and don't patronize beef serving restaurants".

I have a close friend who can't stand beef or non-veg. I respect her choice and don't eat non-veg around her. I can't be all 'well I am eating non-veg. It goes in my body. How is that affecting you and your body?'. Likewise I have friends who want beef to be banned. They have their beliefs. So do others. Things aren't so simple that they can be changed overnight.

I mean patronize in the context of don't be a patron aka customer.

I am a meat eater. I may order and eat vegetarian out of courtesy to friends. The day they "expect" or "demand" me to not eat meat around them or worse give it up altogether, that friendship is over.

IMO, the solution is very simple. Don't force your beliefs on others.

On a serious note, this ban is much more ridiculous than Gujarat's alcohol ban. Not only that alcohol is consumed by Gujjus as any other other states, more price, cheaper quality, money in pockets of bootleggers, cops and politicians... those who get addicted turn to desi daroo, cheap and quick to kill u. Failure all around.
I will leave rligions, majority/minority, the others doing it so can we kinda emotional issues aside and approach it practically.

Hunger, starvation, food prices so high we only eat rice water, a garlic and roti made of bugs full of aata... how many of us have been there???

India has 1,2 Billion mouths to feed. The supply/demand ratio is already low that ppl dying by hunger is not even worth a news. And then u gonna cut the one section of food supply? Not only 1000s of ppl will be out of jobs but the other meat prices will go up and in chain reaction, the food prices in general will go up. Ask a starving man, what religion he belongs to... he will say 'kuch khane ko de do"

Some stats... from memory. Today, we the human race have food worth lasting 57 days... so imagine if any and every source of food cease to exist, we r dommed in 2 months time.

Another, if whole world become vegi and stop eating eating non-veg, half of the world's population will die 5 years, the other half may survive for 20 more years as they have less mouths to feed and agriculture advances..

So, lets be practical sometimes, I dont eat beef, my choice. I eat chicken the most and sometimes fish and lamb. All the females in my family r pure vegetarians, I respect them, they respect us.. I only eat non-veg outside or get the take away home. No cooking at home.

As a born Hindu Brahmin i shudnt be eating non-veg or drink alcohol or whatever the list is.. I dont do it. I dont feel guilty.. and I am still Hindu. That's the beauty abt our religion.

So, I hope common sense prevails, If They r really think cow is mata and holy then adopt one cow from the streets roaming around in serach of food and u can count her rib cage bones.. Just one cow. Wud U?

India needs to stop calling itself a secular country, because laws like this goes against what secular country stands for...

Why Ban beef? Because it hurts some people's religious sentiments? What about banning beef hurting some people's freedom to eat whatever the f**k they want?... It's simple really, you don't eat beef? Cool, don't eat it, don't go anywhere where it served but those that do love eating beef won't have that option if it's banned, see the difference?
