Pork is not banned. So why don't muslims eat it ? Because of religion?

Personally, I endorse Uniform Civil Code. My argument is more based on personal laws of minority religions. Implementing UCC takes away their constitutional right to freedom of religion.

Muslims don't eat Pork. Some Hindus don't eat Beef. Why ban anything because it hurts some religious sentiments?

They can ban all they want..the question is who is going to implement and monitor this ban..police..judiciary..we all know how 'well' those entities work in India...this ban is just going to open up a black market for beef that's all...you think liquor is not available in Gujarat, you just pay more for it...

There are different sides to this.

1966 - 2015 the minorities (assuming they eat beef) got what they wanted.
That's a long time for the other side (which exists) to NOT get what they want (ban beef).

170 Maharashtra Hindu 77,859,385 40,496,085 37,363,300
171 Maharashtra Muslim 10,270,485 5,437,926 4,832,559
172 Maharashtra Christian 1,058,313 530,975 527,338
173 Maharashtra Sikh 215,337 117,736 97,601
174 Maharashtra Buddhist 5,838,710 2,977,607 2,861,103
175 Maharashtra Jain 1,301,843 670,236 631,607
176 Maharashtra Other Religious Communities 236,841 119,113 117,728

In short democracy will never ever be pleased. Everyone can't be expected to be treated equally when the demands are so different (Ban beef, don't ban beef, don't care).

It will be interesting to see how long this beef ban lasts.

Edited: Nvm not from 1966 but seems to have always been the case. In 1966 the process was first initiated, but dismissed.

I don't know much about Australia's constitution to make any argument. Just for whataboutism...eventhough idolatry is prohibited in all Abrahamic religions, almost all religious countries let Hindus practice their religion and build temples.

What about those Hindus who were born in India and demand beef to be banned? They do exist. Are we going to ignore them? 😛

From 1966 to 2015 the ones who wanted to eat beef got what they want. Now the other side is getting what they want in Maharashtra. There are Maharashtrians who want beef to be banned.

Not like this beef ban is all over India.

Why demand ban? How's it affecting them if others consume beef?

I think UCC can and should work in India just as it does in most western nations.

There should not be separate marriage, divorce, inheritance, adoption laws based on religion. I think the UCC is more for simplifying the civic legal structure from the confusing communal present structure.

Polygamy is illegal in USA. That applies not just to Muslims but to Mormons and polygamy cults as well. It doesn't prevent consenting adults who choose to live in polyamorous relationships. Muslims and Mormons do engage in "religious" polygamy. The court however, recognizes only one.

Jews follow matrilineal inheritance. US inheritance laws are based on biological parentage and proportions based on income, number of siblings etc. The synagogue can still reject someone as a Jew if the mother is not Jewish, but how the court sees the relationship with parents is set.

The argument for gay marriage which more and more courts are accepting is also based on equity of civic law principle. A church or a mosque can reject gay couples or refuse gay marriages. However, the court cannot use religious beliefs to segregate rights of citizens.

It is not perfect, we still have major setbacks where certain organizations will not cover female contraception in their health care citing religious beliefs. (but will cover Viagara)

I think India could do very well to adopt such an equivalent legal structure. Although, minorities have valid reason to be wary because certain majority politicians are known to undermine minority interests.

What about Hindus born in India, in Bombay, Maharashtra who want to eat beef?

What about vegetarians who were born in India and demand to ban all meat and animal products?

What about atheists born in India who want to ban religion?

How many "sentiments" can we appease?

The solution is simple.

Want to eat beef? Eat.
Don't want to eat beef? Don't. Don't even patronize beef serving restaurants. Many vegetarians don't enter a restaurant unless it is pure veg.

There is always a contraband market. There is so much contraband alcohol in Gujarat, especially in the government offices. 😆

I wonder if beef speakeasies will pop up.
