No, he was not obligated by the law to provide anything until the courts settled the divorce and split the assets. The actual divorce process can end up taking a long time, sometimes even years! During that intervening time, there are really no rules and it turns into a free for all. Some people refuse to provide money, some people refuse to allow access to the children, and all sorts of stuff occurs.
This is the time frame where custody has not been granted yet and alimony has not been decided. This stuff takes a long time. Once everything was signed on paper, Amrita did get child support from Saif. She also got the house they used to live in and he got joint custody of the kids. Amrita stopped working a long time ago because she started getting money from Saif for child care needs and probably alimony for herself too. She was only working and getting monetary help (from Sanjay Dutt?) while the divorce was still in court and she was waiting for everything to be legalized.Of course he should not have been a jerk and helped her out during that time in the middle when everything was not down on paper. But that's life. I also take all the stuff that comes in the papers with a grain of salt. Each side tries to make the other one look bad.Amrita would have gotten him arrested if he was breaking laws or doing something illegal. It's not that simple. Morally, of course SAif was a creep, nobody is really denying that. But legally, he wasn't really doing anything wrong at the time. If he was, Amrita would have made sure to get him in a lot of trouble.

But you're missing the point, blue-ice. Saif did and does provide child support money. He probably gives alimony too because Amrita has not gotten married again. She also got the house in her name. It's obvious she's fine financially because she's no longer working and stopped a long time ago.
Things do get messy during the divorce process. About the joint account- who knows, it's not like we know full details of what goes on in someone else's life. Most likely, Saif was advised by his lawyers to freeze it. It's a common procedure in a divorce. Relying on media so much still won't tell us everything especially when both sides are trying to throw mud at the other one to appear better in public. If Amrita didn't have money to provide for the kids, all she had to do was send them to Saif to live with him. If he lived with them, he would have obviously had to take care of them and he would have. She wanted to keep them to herself so she started working and finding a way to pay for things. Even Saif had to rely on her to let her see them. There was nothing legal down on paper yet so she had a lot of control over access to the children just like Saif had control over the money.Again, nobody is excusing Saif morally. He was jerk for cheating, he was a jerk through the divorce process as well. But it was not illegal and he was not breaking laws. He was just waiting for things to be legalized on paper before he gave her the money which makes sense in a financial and legal way if not in a moral way.And btw, I don't think it was such a cruel thing that Amrita had to start working. What's the big deal in being a working mother? It's natural that you have to stand up on your own two feet now that you're single again. She was well provided for financially in the divorce anyway; it's just that it took time to work itself out as the divorce process is pretty long. Also, the kids look quite happy with Saif. They even get along with Kareena. They were important parts of the wedding. If he was such a bad father, they would have held a lot more grudges. He was a horrible husband but I don't think he's that bad a dad. He's made mistakes of course but I don't think it's as horrible as people sometimes make it seem.
