Watched it this afternoon. For a brief non-spoilery review: absolute chick flick, make time for the movie if you simply want to relax, sit back and unwind. It's nothing that will blow you out of the water, but a very decent time pass. Much more bearable than some 'blockbusters' for sure. If you're a fan of either Ranveer or Anushka, you'll find it decent too.
Now for the spoilers:
Contrary to most of the reviews, I'll say that the movie became interesting in the second half actually or rather right at the climax. The first part was fine types, all three of the girls and their acting is good...suitable for what was required of them. Parineeti is getting lots of praises and it's because she is the 'class clown' of the movie...the one who gets all of Habib Faisal's punchlines, so it's understandable why one of the reviewers said that she had the best role in the movie. The rest are more poised, serious, and steady than Dimple, so they didn't have that territory to explore. My personal favourite was Aditti, who was very understated and effortless while in character. Her character's evolution though wasn't so at all...but that's a fault in the script, which I'll get to in a second.
The songs and score grow on you definitely...their picturization though is quite zany, especially Jigar ka Tukda and Jazba. Being someone who likes for songs and dance to be incorporated into the space of the story in a way that actually makes sense, these two stuck out like a sore thumb because they take you out of the movie...Sunny and Dimple dancing was so totally random, and Anushka as Ishika being all over the railway station, roads, etc...yeah, they just pull you out and leave you wondering, what, why? Aadat Se Majboor and Thug Le were incorporated much more efficiently as intro and outro respectively and Fatal Attractions fit with the story too!
Coming to the biggest weakness of the movie, the script...it was half-baked, far fetched in bits, and needed just some minor work and tweaking to be more sincere in what it was trying to show. Not to mention the fact that the characters weren't done justice to by way of the script or screenplay...they could have had many layers to themselves depending on the treatment, but we never really clearly see their motivations or clean logistics in the events of the movie. Why does Ricky fall in love with Ishika? What is so different about her, what was distinct about her that he never experienced with or for the other girls? We're supposed to believe it because the movie tells us...rather than showing it. In this department (and others too of course), BBB has a clear upper hand over LVRB...people bought that movie and story because it did a great job of showing why and how Bittoo and Shruti fall for each other...why they want to be with each other, and what's it like when they're not. Why does Aditti's character, Saira, have to 'lose' her identity or principles as the movie progresses is another question mark...maybe it's supposed to be a given that she just becomes like the other two girls to go with the flow and does so because she can...no other reason really, which is odd because they could have just let her be her bhenji self and it would have been perfectly alright too. Really saw no need or explanation in there for them to have this aspect in the story but okay...
Ranveer especially was shortchanged with this role because it 'seems' like he has 4 or even 5 facades to play in the movie...but what this does, thanks to the way the script is written and timed, is that it takes away that chance for him to really go into depth with even any one of the characters. We never really get to see the real Ricky Bahl...who he is and what he thinks...again it's all tell rather than show. Still, he made do of the best he could with the role. The performances by all of the actors were what upheld the weak script.
Anushka and Ranveer were fab together...despite the fact that the interactions and characters don't really offer anything distinct or fabulous for them to play with, they manage to create a spark with their combined screen presence. It was very, very, very reminiscent of BBB in places due to some similarities in the script such as being partners or their moments of realization. The next movie they do together will hopefully be far, far away from a love story or anything in the romance genre...just because these two are talented enough to explore other spaces. Individually as well, both of them should pursue a change of pace and should look into doing drastically different stuff now...because they have the potential for it 👍🏼
That scene where Ricky shows Ishika the 90 lakh land by the waterside was so sinisterly shot that I thought he would push her in the water and it was right after he found out that the girls were all conning him together too 🤣 The scene where he finds out by the way was done very well!
Overall, I'd give it a 2.5/5...KEY to enjoying the movie is that you don't think too much about it in the aftermath 😆 That will easily and very definitely give you material to pinpoint weaknesses in, where and how it could have been better, etc. as it's quite a transparent premise and story.
