Filmmaker Priyadarshan has worked with Paresh Rawal in several successful comedies, including Hungama, Hulchul, Bhagam Bhag and Garam Masala. Their pairing has given Hindi cinema some of its most memorable comic moments. But in a recent conversation with Pinkvilla, Priyadarshan revealed that Rawal was not his first choice for Hungama.
Amitabh Bachchan was the original choice
Priyadarshan shared that he initially wanted Amitabh Bachchan for the role that eventually went to Paresh Rawal. “Once I was planning to make Hungama, I was thinking to approach Amit ji for the role of Paresh Rawal in that, he would have done magic. Of course, Paresh did well. But then he (Amitabh) fell sick, he was not well, so I was forced to take Paresh,” he said.
The director admitted that while Rawal delivered a memorable performance, he still imagines how differently the film could have shaped up with Amitabh in the role. Priyadarshan called himself Amitabh Bachchan’s biggest fan and said working with him remains his long-cherished wish. “So many times I was trying to make a script which suits him (Amitabh). And I think I have cracked something, I'm not sure whether it will happen or not. Now I'm making my last attempt to go to him with the script. But at the same time, that will be the only wish I have,” he shared.
Hungama’s legacy and upcoming projects
Hungama, released in 2003, became one of the most loved comedies of its time. Featuring Paresh Rawal, Akshaye Khanna, Aftab Shivdasani and Rimi Sen, the film’s story revolved around a chain of misunderstandings that spiralled into chaos. Paresh’s portrayal of Radheshyam Tiwari continues to be remembered as one of his standout comic roles.
Priyadarshan is now gearing up for Bhooth Bangla, starring Akshay Kumar, Paresh Rawal and Wamiqa Gabbi. The film is set to release on April 2, 2026. He will also reunite with Paresh, Akshay and Suniel Shetty for Hera Pheri 3, which is expected to go on floors the same year.
