The film is doing quite well for YRF.Critics and fans are a bit upset though..

They know how the YRF factory works..how they earn back their investments..This was a safe one and they milked it.In the process the talented bunch of BBB got a raw deal.Every one is upset ..especially for Maneesh Sharma..They feel he was forced to take up this project.I think they did a great disservice to Anushka too...gave the best lines to their new recruit..gave her a half baked role(AND she arrived at interval😳)..made her do the pointless bikini scene for this DUD film..

No one seems to care really..this film was made for purely selfish commercial reasons by YRF.

'Ricky Bahl' v/s 'Dirty Picture' at box office

Maneesh Sharma's con thriller is low on box office numbers, thanks to a good response to last week's release, 'The Dirty Picture'

Considering that Band Baaja Baaraat emerged as the surprise package of December, last year, there were some expectations from director Maneesh Sharma's Ladies vs Ricky Bahl as well.

A still from Ladies vs Ricky Bahl

More so because it was bringing together the Ranveer Singh-Anushka Sharma jodi in a story where both characters try to outdo each other, but eventually end up falling in love.

However, the rom-com lost out to Milan Luthria's The Dirty Picture which netted about Rs 16-17 crore in its second weekend. As for the other release, Vikram Bhatt's Lanka toplining Manoj Bajpai, sank without a trace.

Veteran trade analyst Amod Mehra attributes it to lack of entertainment in the second half, though the audience is not minding the first half.

"Despite a decent opening of about Rs 15-16 crore in the first three days, Monday saw a considerable drop." It is learnt that a couple of shows were cancelled in Kolkota due to very low turnout.

Summing up the box office opening of the Ranveer-Anushka starrer, Mehra states that its chances of surviving the week are low. Equally forthcoming is Manoj Desai, Executive Director at Maratha Mandir and G7 Cineplex in Mumbai.

"There were no ladies and neither was there any Ricky Bahl in the audience," he says caustically, adding that despite it being sold as a youthful movie, the youth aren't exactly thronging the cinemas. "Not even one show was houseful. As for Lanka, it's fared even worse."

On the other hand, the Vidya Balan movie also featuring Emraan Hashmi, Naseeruddin Shah and Tusshar Kapoor continues to draw in the audience.

As Mehra enthuses, "TDP netted Rs 16-17 crore in the second weekend, which is something the so-called big films should be doing. Till Sunday, producer Ekta Kapoor's newest hit has netted over Rs 68 crores from its India theatrical release."

However, he asserts that the BO performance of the film doesn't mean that Ranveer can be written off. "Generally, young stars feel a movie is a hit because of them.

He can't hike his fee now, so it's definitely a setback for him," he observes, adding that the film's BO numbers won't make much difference to the producers at YRF.

In the same vein, the head of a multiplex chain, who didn't wish to be named, maintained that the Chopras need not worry about their investment of Rs 25 odd crore (including print and advertising) on the movie.

"The producers have made some money from sales of satellite rights, etc. So breaking even is not their worry," he stated.

With no major release coming this Friday, all eyes, this week, are on Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol. The film has already generated good buzz with the recent visit of Tom Cruise to India.

Profitable, yes... But one expected more!

By Taran Adarsh, December 14, 2011 - 08:35 IST
The month of December this year has three prominent films lined up for public scrutiny -- THE DIRTY PICTURE [the verdict is out: the film is a goldmine for its investors], LADIES VS RICKY BAHL [the verdict is awaited] and of course, DON 2. LADIES VS RICKY BAHL was eyed for varied reasons. The principal reason being, it brings back the successful cast and crew of BAND BAAJA BAARAAT. Also, the second week of December has proved lucky for Yash Raj in the past [with the sole exception of ROCKET SINGH SALESMAN OF THE YEAR, which opened in the second week of December 2009]. RAB NE BANA DI JODI had opened in the second week of December 2008, while BAND BAAJA BAARAAT was unveiled in the same week in 2010. Naturally, YRF was expecting LADIES VS RICKY BAHL to prove a worthy follow up to BAND BAAJA BAARAAT.

One expected LADIES VS RICKY BAHL to stir up a storm at the ticket window, but it didn't. Frankly, the business is in sync with the merits of this film -- strictly average. Ideally, the weekend numbers should've been 20 cr nett [or more], with Week 1 closing at around Rs 33 cr/Rs 35 cr nett. Only then it would've been a worthy follow up to BAND BAAJA BAARAAT. But the film should close Week 1 at approx Rs 25 cr to Rs 26 cr, depending on how it fares on the remaining days. One expected more, for sure!

Nonetheless, Yash Raj is safe as far as the economics of LADIES VS RICKY BAHL are concerned. The film has cost approx Rs 25 cr, inclusive of print and advertising, out of which approx Rs 19 cr to 20 cr have been recovered from Satellite and other non-theatrical avenues. The balance amount -- Rs 5 cr/Rs 6 cr -- has to be recovered from India and Overseas theatrical, which is a cakewalk. LADIES VS RICKY BAHL may yield decent profits, but when you make a film in today's times -- also looking at the upswing in business -- one would've expected the film to hit the pot of gold.

The second release of the week, LANKA, made no noise whatsoever at the ticket window. There was minimal buzz prior to its release and the disastrous opening weekend business didn't come as a rude shock either.

Ranveer Singh gets his second hit

The writer has posted comments on this articleMeena IyerMeena Iyer, TNN | Dec 18, 2011, 05.00PM IST

Ranveer Singh who became an overnight sensation with Aditya Chopra's Band Baaja Baraat has scored at the box office a second time over.

His December 9 release Ladies V/s Ricky Bahl has already made 25 cr in the first week and
the trade estimates that the film will still continue to make some more money at the box office through this weekend and the holiday season because this Friday's two releases Jo Hum Chahein and Pappu Can't Dance Saala are complete duds at the ticket windows.

Since Ladies V/s Ricky Bahl is a Yashraj production, the film has been economically made and will definitely make a profit. Of course the profit margin is not as big as it was in the case of Ranveer's debut film BBB because neither the trade nor the public have gone gaga over the Ladies(Anushka, Dipanita, Parineeti) or Ricky Bahl(Ranveer) to the degree to which they should ideally have gone.

Trade analyst Taran Adarsh says, "Ranveer has had his second hit. He has huge potential to go forward and become a big craze. However in the case of Ladies..., the film was a let down, especially the second half. No actor can rise above a script. Ranveer's popularity saved the film, however the film itself was not up to the mark.''
