Bigg Boss: Chal Bet Laga! Ravi Kissen: Ek ka 1.60. Rakhi Sawant: Ek ka 1.85. Ragini Shetty: Ek ka 4.50. Chal bet laga! The bookie world is in a tizzy. Betting addicts are going for the jugular. Ragini Shetty is the channel moll. They'll never throw her out. So, bet on her, she's the safest bet, tempt the bookies. As the weeks go by and she continues to stay on, the bookies are upping the stakes on her. But amongst the betting community, there can be only two possibilities: Ravi Kissen and Rakhi Sawant. Welcome to the world of Bigg Boss. A little different from the world we see on our telly sets, but no less exciting. The buzz is that about a 100 crore rupees is hanging on this show. And 99 per cent of it is being generated out side Mumbai. In glittercity, only one crore is making the rounds of wishful pockets. Bigg Boss controls the lives of 13 celebs locked in a house for three months. They have a five-point rulesheet. No contact with the outside world. No television. No newspaper. No mobile phones. No privacy. Every week participants nominate two fellow inmates to be voted out of the house. Of the two, one is voted out by the audience via SMS voting. The contestant who has the least number of votes against him or her will win the show and get a whopping Rs. 50 lakh reward. The game show now has all the attention of bookies of the Satta-Bazaar. The market was at an all time high when Rakhi Sawant was in the show and everyone believed that she would win. But after her ouster, the market just closed down. Now that she's back on the show, the mobiles have started ringing again. A source from satta bazzar said that "Market is open now and 37 per cent betting is on Ravi Kissen, the second strongest candidate is Rakhi Sawant. The market is also confident that the betting amount will increase in the next two weeks. So far maximum amount is from northern parts of India as Ravi Kissen has maximum number of fan following in that part and they are confident about his win". How does this betting work? The usual betters know who the bookies are. One bookie from Mulund told Indya.com, "The cricket bookies are different from the TV show bookies." So after the bookie is identified, you place your bet. There is a minimum amount. Right now the minimum amount on Bigg Boss is Rs 10,000. You can place your bet on Ravi Kissen. Therefore if he is not out in the next round, then you win to the extent of Rs. 16000/-. But can this betting be manipulated? Yes, if there's a lot of money riding on one person, the bookies are set to lose that amount of money if the person actually wins. Therefore to ensure that he or she doesn't win, a flood of smses are sent for others in the group. This shifts the power balance. Is this likely to happen with Bigg Boss too? Ravi (name changed) one of the bookies said "I am sure and confident in a very fair deal with Bigg Boss as nobody can manipulate the results. As far as I know one can vote only once through the cell. If it was multiple voting then chances were there of manipulation of results." Another bookie who specializes in cricket betting denies that any betting is done on films. "I have been in this business for the last 10 years and I have not heard of this. Definitely the cricket bookies don't get into this. If some guy somewhere decides to get into business then it's another thing. We would not want to take on such a huge risk." Voted out participants of Bigg Boss speak about betting. Bobby Darling "This is shocking news for me. I am not interested in betting but amazingly the show has lost its TRP. I don't understand why people are wasting there money" Anupama Verma "See whatever fan mail I have received has my fans saying that they have not voted me out. After mine and Aryan's eviction show, the has lost its TRP. So I am not sure about the betting, but I will definitely bet for Rakhi Sawant." Aryan Vaid "Seriously I have no idea about this, I can't give any comment." Deepak Parashar "I am busy with my shoots, I don't have any information about betting. I am not interested in betting for any one." http://www.indya.com/news/bigg_boss.html |
There are volatile mood swings in the Bigg Boss House with tears and tantrums, and back-slapping and bear hugs. One moment they swear to stand by each other and claim to be friends and the next thing you know they are nominating each other to be evicted! This week the girls are in trouble.
Rakhi Sawant seems to be on top of the hit list once again. No prizes for guessing who have voted for her eviction — Carol Gracias and Amit Sadh. Ragini isn't winning any brownie points either. New entrant, Baba Sehgal, wants both Ragini and Rakhi out. Amit who promised to stand by Ragini 'like a brother' has nominated her for eviction and so has her arch rival Rupali.
Rupali herself has 'confidante' Rahul, Ragini and Rakhi voting against her. Carol is amongst the nominations once again, voted in by best friend Ravi who wants to give it back to her. With the girls in a tussle with each other it is a fair ground for the guys.
Amit is the only guy to be nominated. Surprisingly, Rahul and Ravi have nominated him while pretending to be indulgent towards him!
Who will celebrate the New Year at the Bigg Boss house? To find out, tune in tonight to Sony Entertainment Television at 9 pm.
Reality rocks but soaps retain their lather
2006 clearly belonged to reality TV. Whether it was Nach Baliye 2 or Jhalak Dikhla Jaa, viewers were perfectly in tune with the talent-hunts. But it's Sony's Bigg Boss that is the talk-of-the-town. Touted to be the mother of all soaps Big Boss is the ultimate in vouyerism and the viewers are loving it. The show in fact has opened new, albeit, scary dimensions to a reality show in India. The Indian viewer who had earlier rejected game-shows like Kamzor Kadi Kaun because it was impolite, arrogant and rude, is now uninhibitedly lapping up the bitchiness and nastiness of the Bigg Boss contestants. Though unlike the original version of Big Brother, the channel bosses are drawing the line when it comes to sex, one wouldn't be surprised if a couple of years down the line, the bar gets raised there too.
In a bid to counter reality television, many of the long-winding saas-bahu soaps spruced up their act. From Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi, Kumkum to Kahaani Ghar Ghar Kii and Woh Rehnewali Mehlon Ki, the serials promptly took a leap and got revamped. While Kyunki ... and Kahaani ... underwent a third generation leap, it was the first one for Kumkum and Woh Rehne .... According to the latest TRPs, Kahaani ... is soaring ahead with its new look. Even Woh Rehnewali ... continues to be the channel-driver on Sahara One.
Amidst the plethora of regressive soaps, there was a welcome respite in serials like Saat Phere, Betiyaan Apni Ya Paraya Dhan, Ghar Ki Lakshmi Betiyaan and Solhah Shingarr. While Saat ... brought out our obsession with fair skin and discrimation against dark complexion, both the Betiyaan soaps talk about how daughters are a boon and not the bane of a family. Solhah Shingarr deals with the sensitive subject of widow remarriage.
STAR Plus created a sensation when it announced the return of KBC with a new host. Shahenshah Amitabh Bachchan was replaced by badshah Shah Rukh Khan. For the superstar, who began his career on the small-screen it is like coming a full circle.
To sum up, while reality TV got a push this year with talent-hunts doing well in the second season and new ones being introduced, family dramas and soaps continue to reign. Reality shows are a means to lure new viewers to the channel who are later served with the regular stable of soaps...
STAR PLUS
For the sixth consecutive year, STAR Plus dominates television viewing across every slot and Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi and Kahaani Ghar Ghar Kii rule the charts. Both the soaps had a generation leap and the latter is doing better in its new avataar. The new look Parvati has been welcomed by the viewers. While their weekend soap Baa Bahoo Aur Baby saw a steady increase in viewership, the channel also launched a grand historical Prithviraj Chauhan and a mythological Sai Baba. Ek Chabi Hai Pados Mein, a throwback to the yesteryear Nukkad was launched towards the year-end. To woo kids, the channel introduced two shows Antariksh, a sci-fi version of Ramayan and Lucky about a conman who is enrolled to save the world from evil. The channel also launched two new prime time shows, Virasat, a lavish serial produced by BR Films, and Balaji replaced Kavyanjali with Karam Apna Apna.
