Rakhi: Pulled up?

During her first innings on Bigg Boss, Rakhi Sawant's terrible skin condition was there for all to see. Considering she appeared without greasepaint for the most part, those telltale marks on her visage were very apparent.

However, her crazy antics more than made up for the sorry skin. Interestingly, in her second coming on the show, Rakhi's face and skin now appears tighter and cleaner than the one a few weeks ago.

We're thinking it's not a facial that's done the trick, but in all probability a face-lift. After all, those telltale lines have all but disappeared! What on earth did a re-entry on Bigg Boss compel Rakhi to do? Go under the knife? Tch, tch, tch!

Reality shows seem to be the current flavour on general entertainment channels. Nach Baliye, though a weekly, is a two and half hours do-or-die dance bonanza on Mondays. Bigg Boss, pitted against Kahani Ghar Ghar Ki is a Monday to Friday affair of bitching, leg pulling, romance, soft talks and fights and back stabbing. Fame X is a musical journey of 16 aspiring singers spread over five days a week on SAB. KBC slated for telecast Monday to Thursday from mid-January will replace Viraasat and Karam Apna Apna in the 9 to 10 pm band on Star Plus.

Zee has Cinestar Ki Khoj. Given their instant emotional appeal and audiences' participation in deciding the contestants' fate in most reality soaps – KBC is an exception where viewers have to register through phone or SMS to make it to the hot seat – are channels according more importance to reality shows to mop up TRPs? And is reality TV hijacking daily soaps' viewers?

"Reality TV is certainly the day's flavour and as a concept it is also picking up in popularity," says Siddhartha Mukherjee, corporate communication head, TAM India, which measures TRPs besides providing a whole host of information on trends in viewership, consumption patterns, viewership fragmentation and viewership profile. "But there is no immediate and major impact on other content." Siddhartha says reality is all about instant emotions and since we Indians thrive on emotions, reality TV has its own place in programming. "Though reality TV is the current flavour it is not the reason to say that soaps are having a tough time," he adds.

"Both reality TV and fiction have their own audiences besides reality shows bring in new audience. A good reality show will always get good viewership but it is not to say that the soaps struggle for eyeballs. Nach Baliye is getting 4.8 rating and it is affecting all shows on all channels, including Star Plus," admits Star India's senior creative head Shailja Kejriwal. "But soaps have their loyal audience who may sample reality shows but return back to fiction."

So feels Ashish Kaul, Zee network's senior vice-president, "General entertainment channels (GEC) run on the virtue of good story, strong emotions and popular characters. In reality shows there are no characters but unknown faces and unheard names that do not make a strong connection with viewers. People do not watch GEC for reality but for scripted reality in the form of fictional drama." In Ashish's opinion the current flavour is not reality TV but fiction. "Why it appears hot favourite because of huge promotional campaign that is unleashed to break the clutter barrier. If people really watch TV for reality then Aaj Tak should be the no. 1 channel," he laughs.

However, Sony's programming and creative head Sandiip Sikcand says that reality shows are mopping up good ratings. "The turnaround has happened in the case of Bigg Boss which opened with 2.1 TRVs and the latest TRP for Bigg Boss is 3," he informs. However, Sandiip is of the view that reality TV and fiction will never overpower each other. "They will co-exist simply because they provide variety and alternative to audience," says Sandiip, adding further that in the current scenario the regular television soaps and sagas are getting impacted for sure. "The TRPs of reality shows are showing an upward trend."

Sandiip however, is very bullish on fiction. "The sheer pull of fiction can't be underestimated. Reality TV will come and go in seasons but fiction ultimately drives television programming. We are in the process of developing a very interesting band of fiction on Sony," he reveals. Shailja doesn't disagree, "You can't make a sweeping statement that reality TV is hijacking viewers. A little bit of highs and lows are part of the game," she says. In her opinion KBC is not a reality show.

"It has emotions, drama, tears, laughter and pauses. It can be called scripted reality." However, reality or scripted reality KBC which changed the rules of prime time television ever since it was launched in July 2000 and knocked out the competition for a few years and is now returning for the third season has already impacted the fate of Viraasat and Karam Apna Apna.

Shailja admits that Viraasat which was not doing all that well is being given a seasonal break. "As for Karam we are in the process of rescheduling its time slot," she adds. Siddhartha sumps up succinctly, "Reality TV is a tactic or technique channels are picking up to boost TRPs. Even sports and news channels are opting for reality shows. Technically speaking KBC was the first reality show on Indian television. The trend started heating up with Indian Idol, Fame Gurukul and Cinestar Ki Khoj. But we have not seen even the tip of iceberg yet. Reality TV will always work because it knows no boundaries. But you can't write off fiction. The consumer is well-informed today and he can distinguish between reality and fiction to make the right choice."

Who will pack their bags this week?

Catch the excitement soar, as this week on Bigg Boss, Deepak Tijori, Ravi Kishen and Rupali get nominated to leave the house

The Bigg Boss house was in a state of limbo after all the romance went out with Aryan Vaid. The drama bit almost died out with Rakhi Sawant and the dirty politics simmered down with Kashmira's exit. But Rakhi is back with gusto and the house has come alive… with laughter, dance, arguments, tears, drama and more melodrama. Nominations to leave are in and it is once again time for one to pack his/her bags and head for home and the world outside. Deepak Tijori, with his devious master plans, seems to have irked a majority of the inmates this time and leads the pack with five nominations. Ravi Kishen who blows hot and cold at regular intervals with his emotional outbursts follows on his heel with three nominations. Cry baby Rupali has now mastered the art of rubbing people the wrong way so no prizes for guessing why she is amongst the nominations week after week. One thing is for sure… Carol Gracius will not be home for Christmas this year! Watch the eviction round tonight at 9 pm on Bigg Boss, Sony Entertainment Television.

Weeknights continue to be disrupted because the Bigg Boss fascination refuses to fade. They said with Kashmera gone, no one would watch it. Then with Anupama and Aryan gone, the romance went out of it.True, the bite is missing, but guys, Rakhee is back and loyalists like me are still shamelessly watching the antics of the house residents every day.

What the heck, it's only for a few more weeks, I tell myself. That's not so bad as an addictive soap, is it?

Rakhi turns to Christianity
By: Tushar Joshi
December 23, 2006

A spiritual item now: Abhishek Awasthi, Rakhi Sawant and Jaya

On Bigg Boss, you may have noticed Rakhi Sawant reading from the Bible or singing praises of Jesus. Sources reveal that Rakhi is deeply drawn to Christianity.

A friend says, "Not many know this side to Rakhi. She loves going to church and attending Sunday mass. She always keeps the Bible with her."

Curious cat

Talking about her fixation for Christianity, another friend reveals, "After being evicted from Bigg Boss, Rakhi felt she was emotionally very vulnerable and needed someone or something to turn to. Incidentally, Carol (Gracias) would often read out passages to her from the Bible at the house, and Rakhi was very inspired by them. When she came out, she was curious about Christianity and wanted to learn more. She was even keen on celebrating Christmas and wanted to sing carols and attend midnight mass before she went back in again."

Rakhi's mother Jaya too validates her daughter's interest in the religion. She says, "Rakhi attends church regularly and even reads the Bible. I have been practising Christianity for the last three years. My son Rakesh, too, has been interested in the life of Jesus Christ from his childhood days. I wanted Rakhi to start reading the Bible too and bring the Lord's presence in her life."

Jai Ganesh!

Jaya says that the mother-daughter duo religiously visits the Good Shepherd church at Four Bungalows, Andheri. Says Jaya, "Rakhi wanted to come for the midnight mass this year. She had expressed her desire to pray along with me this Christmas. But now, that won't be possible as she's gone back into Bigg Boss's house."

Even though she has no plans to convert from being a Hindu into a full-fledged Christian, Rakhi's mother is happy that her daughter is now practising the religion too. "She is also a disciple of Lord Ganesha. I think her mind is more at peace when she is religious. When she came back home after being eliminated from Bigg Boss, she would sit at home, read the Bible and take the Lord's name and feel serene."

Rakhi's boyfriend Abhishek Awasthi says, "There is nothing startling about Rakhi's sudden interest in the religion as she has always been going to church and praying to Jesus Christ. However, she also believes in Lord Ganesha and celebrates Ganesh Chaturthi at her home every year. I think she follows both religions with equal fervour."

'I want to make a film on Bigg Boss'
By: Shaheen Parkar
December 23, 2006

The non-controversial inmate of Bigg Boss, Deepak Tijori, was taken by surprise when he was evicted from the Sony reality show last evening. "I did not expect to go," he says. The actor-turned-director now plans to make a film based on his experiences on the show. "It is an awesome concept and I have first-hand knowledge of what happens when different people are thrown together in one house. The only change I would make is to make the film a thriller!"

What's your first move out of Bigg Boss?
To immediately get moving on my film, Hello Mumbai, produced by Baba Films. We had already signed Dino Morea and Jimmy Sheirgill, when I upped and took off to Bigg Boss's house. I kept the project on hold. I appreciate that they waited for me to get back. All I can say is, "I love you, Dino" and "I love you, Jimmy."

You were shown promising a role to Aryan Vaid?
I have no qualms in admitting that he has potential and I will definitely consider him.

Everyone was surprised to see your emotional side.
I was completely overwhelmed to receive that card from my daughter Samara. I was so touched by what she said in the card, that she had never seen me dancing the way she did in Bigg Boss and jumping into the pool with John Abraham was a big thing for her. All this while, Samara hated seeing my films as an actor. She abhors the idea that I always get beaten up in my films. She would never let anyone even touch the DVDs of the films. And now finally she saw me in Bigg Boss, the way she wanted to see me. In fact, my decision to take part in the show was also because she loved to watch Bigg Boss.

There were lots of lessons to learn in Bigg Boss.
It was like going for Vipasana. You are away from the world; that's when you realise what the people around you mean to you. In the past, too, I have been away from home for long periods due to shoot schedules, but everyone is a mere phone call away. In Bigg Boss's house, you are alone even though there are others; each is of a different mindset. But then that is the show's concept, to throw people of different viewpoints together. I also loved to do the tasks assigned to me; even though in real life, I am quite a kaamchor!

You were extremely diplomatic in the show.
I preferred to be that way. It is natural for people to form groups and say things about each other. I wanted to steer clear from all this.

Which of the inmates got on your nerves?
I don't want to take any names. Even if the others spoke about me, I have nothing against them. When they are out, I will meet and greet them; they all behaved in this manner because the situation demanded it. Anyone would have behaved in a similar manner.

'I want mistletoe placed everywhere'
Shubha Shetty-Saha
Sunday, December 24, 2006 23:59 IST

'Tis the season of love and who better than Aryan Vaid and Anupama Verma to show us what it's all about

She's shy and he's smitten. Their love bloomed under the unlikeliest circumstances - on camera. We bring you Anupama and Aryan this Christmas - the couple who proved love can conquer microphones and cameras.

Define love.

Anupama: Pure, unconditional and selfless. True love does exist and everyone is looking for it. Only a lucky few find it. Call me an idealistic fool but I believe that true love will never die. If you fall for someone, for the person within, the feeling cannot wither with age or circumstances.

Aryan: It's beautiful and it purifies you. No matter how far you might be from your soul mate, you're bound to meet the person some day.

Was it difficult when your romance was in full view of a TV audience?

Anupama: I'm a private person. But after a point we forgot that we were being watched because I felt genuine affection for Aryan.

Aryan: It did worry me a bit as to how we would be presented. But since the feelings were genuine, it didn't matter. On the contrary, I'm glad we got to spend time with each other and connected. Once outside, I was very confused about our relationship. It had suddenly gone public and everybody was trying to live their fairy tale through us. People had loads of advice to give. They tried to advise Anupama against choosing me, since I have had a history of relationships. But she didn't let anything affect her. She has dealt with my past with such sensitivity that she's been a great teacher to me.

Who would you like to kiss under the mistletoe this Christmas?

Anupama: (laughing) I'll save my comments on that one.
Aryan: Do I need to say it? Anupama of course! And given a choice, I want mistletoe placed everywhere, so I can kiss her everywhere.

Will Baba be the 'Bigg Boss' winner?
After Hours Correspondent
Sunday, December 24, 2006 23:59 IST

Siddharth Kanan is confident that his 'Santa Banta' fellow-host will hit the jackpot

When Baba Sehgal announced his decision to join 'Bigg Boss' (Sony), his fellow-host Siddharth Kannan on the 'Santa Banta' show (Zoom) got a bit jittery. He thought of pulling in Sunil Pal ('The Laughter Challenge' champ') to appear for their Christmas day episode. Subsequently, an amused Baba (who had merely pulled a fast one on Siddharth about his non-availability ) shot an extra bank of episodes to last till the end of January.

"We all have a feeling that Baba will stay put till the end and be the winner of 'Bigg Boss'. Not only is he a cool entertainer but he also has the ability to face adverse situations," insists Siddharth.

Incidentally, for the Christmas day episode to be aired today, Siddharth has grilled guest Sunil. "Since our show is known for its uncensored questions we accused Sunil of having a fling with a Bollywood actress saying that she had even filed a police complaint against him! That left Sunil blushing," reveals Siddharth.

The next week will feature actor Vikas Bhalla who was made a bakra by actor Meghna Naidu. She alleged that he had 'zabardasti piled on to her'. Bhalla was almost in tears," reveals Siddharth wearing a comic frown.

Big Brother to Pay Shilpa Rs 3 Crores!
At the end of the month Shilpa Shetty leaves for an undisclosed part of UK to be part of the biggest reality show Big Brother UK. Though the actress has been forbidden from talking about it, it's most reliably learnt that Shilpa has been paid the equivalent of a whopping Rs 3 crores to be the only Bollywood participant on the show. Shilpa joins Big Brother from Jan 1 and spends the next 25 days on the show.

Says the source, "When Shilpa was approached she was taken completely by surprise. She had made no overtures to Endemol (the company that produces Big Brother internationally) to let them know she was interested in their show at all. But Big Brother made inquiries. They wanted their first Bollywood entry into the show and they needed someone with a smart, sexy look and attitude, someone who could converse fluently in English. Asians make up about 80 per cent of viewers on the show."

Shilpa who had other plans for Christmas and the New Years has quickly cancelled them all to accommodate the month-long stint away from home.

Says a very close friend of the actress, "Shilpa is basically a home bird and she's dreading this long stay with strangers. But she's also excited because it's a huge honour to be on Big Brother… Not like its Indian counterpart Bigg Boss where any and every wannabe was a contestant. Big Brother UK has the biggest celebrities in the world."

Before signing the super-lucrative contract Shilpa found out how voyeuristic the show is expected to be. There will be no cameras in the bathroom and the celebrities on the show won't be required to act sleazy at all.
