The problem with YHM in addressing culture is that they stick to stereotypes, be it the food, the "ayyo" before every sentence and even the whole kanjeevaram thing. And I believe this applies to the Punjabi culture as well that is portrayed. We live in a day and age where no one really stick to stereotypes, we blend with different cultures, with our surrounding and our experiences. Unfortunately, the CV's do not seem to get that in their quest to portray the drastic differences between the two cultures.

I am south Indian too, keralite. We wear saree's a lot but traditional types like kanjipuram or kanjeevaram as they say in the show and other silk saree's are mainly reserved for traditional functions. My mom and aunts wear saree otherwise too but normal looking simple ones not silk, but my cousins and me wear salwar kameez mostly, they are easier to manage. One time all my older cousins were even annoyed with me cz since I wore a saree to a wedding they had to too. 😆

It's true but south Indians are really prone to being stereotyped. Folks up north really know very little about us. To the point that they are surprised if they meet a south Indian who can read write and speak Hindi. That's what happened with me. 🥱

Traditional functions means silk sarees for most of the Southies. But even the brides go for designer or other shiffon, net kinda sarees during reception or engagement these days.
Kancheevaram sarees are real prized posessions for any South Indian lady. But all silk sarees are NOT Kancheevaram. Esp the sarees that they show in YHM draped by the Iyer ladies are strictly NOT kancheevaram!!

Other silks are Mysore silk, Pochampally, Dharmavaram saris. and even the Kerala saree come under the silk saree category each elegant in its own way. YHM mostly shows synthetic silk sarees or crepe I'm not sure but they r definitely not Kancheevaram.

Kancheevaram saris don't have such loud borders as they are worn from fine silk and gold threads. They have beautiful and elegant design and are known for their contrast border combination mostly.
it is simple and beautiful that no person can look down upon such an art.
I believe this pic shows a real kanjeevaram :

Even these wide bordered kanjeevaram sarees are highly expensive coz of the material that goes in it. Middle class families like the Iyers can't afford that much to wear such saris on a daily basis. But we can buy beutiful Kanjeevaram sarees at affordable prices and they r not the gaudy ones that they show in YHM 😆

And I belong to a normal middle class Keralite family, and we mostly think of saris on every special occasion not striclty kanjeevaram but depending upon the occasion it can be silk or any other material. I'm not much of a sari person and I have draped a silk saree only on my di's wedding and struggled a lott 😳 but yeah girls generally like to wear saris on functions as they don't wear them normally.
