Ground reality

Reena Kapoor injures herself on the sets of Woh Rehne Wali Mehlon Ki

Reena Kapoor on the sets of Woh...

Actress Reena Kapoor aka Pari of Woh Rehne Wali Mehlon Ki realised the importance of body doubles when she shot a temple sequence where she falls from the stairs and injures herself. The reel life incident turned unfortunately real and Reena hurt herself badly. As a result, the actress could not shoot for the next two days.

Reena says, "The production house insisted that a body double should be used for the purpose. The body double performed the scene very well, and then I was needed for the close-ups. I insisted on doing the close-ups rather than using the body double. The crew wanted to lay down two thick mattresses on the stairs to cushion my fall. I thought one mattress would suffice, but I soon realised that it was not an easy task. I was not professional enough and was actually falling down the stairs and felt the hard cemented surface of the stairs under me. By the time I had finished the scene, I'd injured my elbows and back very badly."

Reena adds, "I felt that my whole body was stirred and shaken after the incident. So, I took proper care to recover. I am wondering how the body double performed the scene without any mattresses!"

Guess who's Aamir's friendly with

In a time when most actors are hitting the headlines for fighting with their co-stars Aamir Ali says that he gets along with both his female costars, Reena Kapoor and Poonam Joshi in SaharaOne's Woh Rehne Wali Mehlon Ki. "Both Poonam and Reena are very sweet. In fact I joined the cast much after Reena, but she made me feel comfortable. And Poonam, who has jopined the cast after me has never taken anything to seriously. It's one set you won't find anyone fighting with anyone, all the fighting happens only on the screen," he says. Looks like this is one happy family.

Poonam's cell phone keeps coming back to her!

The actor has lost her handset thrice, but has found it each time

GITA HARI

In an industry where actors' mobiles are lost on a daily basis, new handsets get replaced to be lost again, isn't it surprising that Poonam Joshi loses the same mobile handset thrice and finds it again. Poonam's mobile phone was lost for the first time at Siddhi Vinayak temple when she had given it to a friend for safekeeping. It got picked from his pocket and a timely uproar made it possible to bring the thief to books and the mobile was retrieved. "The thief was handed over to the police," informs Poonam. It happened again the second time as Poonam left it in the washroom of a party place and was back enjoying the party when an announcement from the DJ console came out loud and clear that a cellphone was found in the washroom. Poonam checked her bag, found it missing and rushed to claim her dear possession.
On the third occasion, a shopaholic that she is, Poonam shopped to her heart's content flitting from one shop to another in the suburbs when she realised her mobile was missing. Sad and dejected, she returned home thinking that she might have left it at one of the many stores she visited but was elated to get a call from her friend, whom she had visited early in the day, informed she had left the cell behind at her place. She jumped with joy and ran to her friend's house to have it back.
"Let any hi-fi technology in handsets come up in the market, but I am never going to give up this handset. I love it as it keeps coming back to me," declares the actor heaving a sigh of relief after a three-time experience of lost and found drama.
Most of Poonam's roles have been in Ekta Kapoor's serials, but she is now playing Sanjana in SaharaOne's Woh Rehne Wali Mehlon Ki, which according to her, "is the first time I am playing a vamp's role. My earlier characters as Kamna in Tumhari Disha and Mahek in Kahin To Hoga were totally positive."
On thing that the actor is particular about is keeping away from controversies and is quite happy with her coterie of female friends with whom she spent the New Year in Goa.

Why Aamir's scene had to be changed...

HARSHADA REGE
When Aamir Ali went to Goa for a short break, he probably didn't expect it to make a impact. "It's a yearly ritual. Whenever I return from Goa, I get skin infection due to the salty water and sand. And I don't get hassled by it anymore," he says. However, this time around Aamir was supposed to perform a scene where Reena Kapoor who plays Pari in Woh Rehnewali Mehlon Ki on SaharaOne was supposed to give him a head massage for a scene. But thanks to the infection, the scene had to be cancelled and modified. When it was finally shot, the scene was changed. "Well, we changed it and showed Reena applying balm on my forehead," laughs Aamir. The actor says that he is happy with the production house for taking so much care of the actors. "In fact, yesterday they even called me to check whether I'll be able to do a scene which required me to face a lot of wind," says Aamir.

Speaking about Woh Rehnewali Mehelon Ki Aamir mentions about the great working relation he shares with both Reena and Poonam Joshi. "When Poonam joined the cast she was on the healthier side, so I started calling her 'paaji'. And now though she has lost weight she is still called paaji by everyone on the set. What's funny is that she has actually started responding to that name," laughs Aamir.

And though Aamir has become popular as Samay in Woh.., he hasn't signed any new serial. "I have no time for anything else after Woh... and I don't want to sign anything for the heck of it. Also my film Raakh, will be on the floors shortly," says Aamir, who's excited about doing up his newly-purchased house.

Aamir gets his dream abode
By: Vickey Lalwani
January 12, 2007

Aamir Ali standing in front of Green Ville

Having taken a long time hunting for a new flat and even encountered a building (Springfields), which was not open to Muslims (No place for Muslims, HiTLIST, December 15), Aamir Ali has finally got the house of his choice.

Naya ghar

Saumya of Woh Rehne Wali Mehlon Ki has bought a three-BHK flat in Green Ville in Lokhandwala Complex, Andheri. "At last, I have space to myself. I had always dreamt of owning a spacious house. At last, I have realised it," gushes Aamir.

Aamir will get the possession of his Green Ville flat on January 14. Thereafter, the interior decoration will begin. The actor emphasises on an original design for his new place. Aamir's close friend Sheena Varma who is a professional in this field will handle the interior decoration.

Sheena tells HiTLIST, "Aamir wants a very stark look, which will be achieved by white tiles and a lot of wooden furniture around.

Plus, his room is going to be very rugged. We shall be shopping together for all the stuff that will be used." Sheena has earlier designed Anoop Soni, Shahwar Ali and Zulfi Sayed's homes.

"Sindoora is closer to my heart"

She's definitely on her way to redefine the vamps of television. We are talking about none other than Kamya Punjabi whose portrayal of vicious but subtle and realistic Sindoora in Zee's Banu Main Teri Dulhann has sent the TRPs soaring each time she glares through her hazel contacts. And as Kamya (her character name) in Woh Rehne Wali Mahlon Ki, she offers serious competition to negative characters currently ruling the small screen.

With a string of serials to her credit - , Kehta Hai Dil, Piya Ka Ghar, Kyun Hota Hain Pyar and Astitva to her credit, this sassy and vivacious actor is fast coming one of the most identified faces in the industry.

In a heart to heart chat with Prashant Golecha, Kamya talks about her journey in this industry, what makes her current roles so special and what lies ahead for her. Excerpts.

What differentiates Sindoora from other telly vamps?
It's the simplicity of the character. She drapes simple cotton sarees. Contact lens is the only flashy item she sports and that's being appreciated by the audience. Though I act spontaneously I have really worked hard for it.

Make a choice between Sindoora (Dulhann…) and Kamya (Woh…)
Sindoora is closer to my heart. But both shows and characters are important. Kamya in Woh …is quite comic and I have avoided being loud by choice Working with Rajshri's is an excellent experience.

How do you manage these two dailies simultaneously?
It's hectic but I have no choice. And above all I enjoy my work.

Going into the reverse mode, did you even think twice before taking up your first negative role in Astitva?
I wanted to work with Ajay Sinha as I loved his serials, especially Hasaratein. I accepted the role of Kiran without a thought and it worked for me. And post that show I have done only negative roles!

How come you have not worked with Balaji Telefilms yet?
I was offered Kitni Mast Hai Zindagi but the kind of money they offered was not acceptable. I was also approached for a role in Kkusum. I would love to work for Ekta Kapoor because she is mind blowing. She has an amazing attitude and has really made it big. She is not bothered about what people comment about her shows and does what she feels is right.

What is the real Kamya Punjabi like?
I am a difficult person to understand. I prefer being very straightforward and hate liars. But I'm very emotional when it comes to my family.

Any special person in your life?
I am too focused about my career so where is the time for love?

It is learnt you dislike pets. Why so?
I had a cat who died when I was in school and I went into a depression. Probably that painful memory is still etched in my memory. Thus I don't like pets at all.

Who are your best pals from this industry?
Kavita Kaushik. But I don't get enough time to interact with her these days as I'm committed to two dailies.

Any memorable fan encounters?
Some time back when I was shooting in Madh Island a fan came up to me and recognized me. For a moment I was thrilled that I am known by my real name. But later he blasted my saying that he hates me because my on-screen characters only annoy others! The man gave me such a look that I was literally thought he would hit me any moment.

Is there a crossover to Bollywood on the cards?
I am happy doing television. If at all I do films in future it has to be a relevant role, nothing insignificant.

I was broke after my first date'

Aamir Ali insists that women should pay part of the bill when on a date

HARSHADA REGE

Your first crush...

That was in school, when I didn't even know what having a crush meant. She used to travel with me in my school bus, but I never told her that I had a crush on her.

Your first date...

Outside my school. We had a vada pav each. Considering my pocket money those days, it was expensive. But what really killed me was the soft drink that we had after the vada pav. I was broke after my first date! The one thing I don't like is that guys are expected to pay all the time irrespective of their age or pocket money. (laughs).

Your idea of a perfect date...

It depends on how it ends. The date can be great but if it doesn't make you feel happy when it ends, it's useless. It has to make both the people feel happy and special.

What qualities do you look for in a woman?

A woman who can spend. Also, she should look good (laughs). On a serious note I have always looked up to my mom and I think the girl I marry has to possess certain qualities like caring for the family.

What was your first relationship like?

I don't remember my first relationship, it was long ago. And for once, like most actresses I am going to refuse to accept that I have had any relationships ever!

What do you think about lust versus love?

I think lust lasts for 10 minutes, but love lasts for a life time. People should understand the difference between the both. .

What is romance to you?

Romance to me is that extra joy and happiness. In one word, it should be beautiful.

Who'd you like to get dirty with on an island?

Dirty! I don't like anything dirty (laughs).

Do you believe in the institution of marriage?

I am scared of marriages. Because nowdays, it's become very difficult for two people to get into a lifelong commitment. I am not commitment phobic, but I like to do things on my own terms.

Your take on infidelity?

It's not acceptable, at least to me. It's the most hurtful thing one can do it his/her partner. Often actors are accused of such things, but it happens everywhere. It's just that our life is in the limelight, so such things are highlighted.

What's cooking?
In Poonam's mind...and kitchen

Poonam Joshi, originally an Ekta Kapoor discovery, made heads turn when she quit Balaji's Kahiin Toh Hoga for a lead role in Zee's Tumhari Disha. Now she is seen in Woh Rahne Waali Mehlon Ki on Sahara One.

Shaaditimes catches up with true- foodie Poonam to know what's cooking in her mind and kitchen.

"Past-a" time
"I love food and I'm a complete foodie. It's a very important part of my life and I also love to cook. Cooking is my favourite hobby and I have mastered it from my mom and keep on experimenting with dishes to make it different and unique. My master piece is roasted chicken. My favourite is Italian food specially pasta and white sauce which I can have anytime during the day. Among the Indian dishes I love typical Gujarati home made meals. I have an over-sized sweet tooth. I love chocolate cake and it should be really really chocolaty and creamy. I love the food at Moshe's, Spaghetti Kitchen and Urban Tadka in Mumbai."
Calorie control
Due to Poonam's love for extra rich food loaded with carbs, "I find it very difficult to control my diet. I find it very difficult to watch out for calories before I eat. The only way I can control this is by allowing myself to eat a sweet dish once a week. This is the only amount of dieting I can follow. Also I try to stick to simple home food which is cooked in minimum oil. While eating out I avoid fried stuff and junk food. The best way to do this is to stuff a small meal at home before going to a party. Then I start the meal at the party with lots of salads so by the time I proceed to the main course I am almost full and have no choice but to eat as little as possible.

No spice in life
I do not like fruits very much. I am very selective about it and like only water melon and oranges. However I compensate the lack of fruits with fresh salads in my meals and I ensure that I have sweet coconut water once everyday. It's my favourite drink. I have no spice in my life as I avoid spicy food. I prefer bland flavours. Though I love pani puri and vada pao I try to avoid them as they are not always very healthy.

Fad is not bad
I am a bit lazy and manage to visit the gym 3-4 times a week. I mix cardio and weights on alternate days. I strongly believe exercise should be an integral part of everyone's life. Even if you can't do it everyday, do it as and when you get time. The main point is that you should enjoy doing it, otherwise it makes no sense. Though it is becoming a fad among youngsters now, I don't think that it is bad. In fact the bargain is good and you are the one who would benefit whether you join a gym, go for a walk or practice yoga.

Smiling face
The best part of my features is my smile. And if I had the chance to change one thing about myself I wish I could change the tendency of putting on weight. Then I could go on eating anything I wish without thinking twice. It would be a blissful life then! I admire John Abraham for his sculptured body and Malaika Arora for her hour glass frame.

Dream date
It would be a dream come true if I could go out on a date with Shahrukh Khan. I love beaches so I would love to spend a quiet evening by seaside chatting with him and then would like to wind it up with a candle light dinner.

Beauty tips
I think a balanced diet with some exercise and right hours of sleep can work wonders. It would add a glow to your skin automatically. I don't take any extra care of my skin except these and some basic cleaning, toning and moisturising as I don't get much time. I love to colour my hair brown with blonde streaks. Since it tends to become rough because of different styling products during shooting I go for a regular head massage and hair pack once every week.

Stress buster
I have been following Buddhism for the last 3 years and now it has become a way of my life and have helped me to shape up as a good human being. Buddhism teaches different ways to look at life and find peace in even in adverse situations. It has made my life much more easier and simpler. During difficult times it has helped me to find strength of mind and confidence in myself in moving out of the problems. Today even after long hours of work I do not feel the pressure so much may be because of my faith in Buddhism. I enjoy my work and though I do not get complete sleep I do not feel the stress so much.

Poonam's roasted chicken recipe
  • Marinate chicken (500 gms) in tomato puree (3 tbsps), soya sauce (2 tbsps) and Worcestershire sauce (2 tbsps) with little ginger garlic paste (2 tsps each) for 5-6 hours.
  • Then roast with onions and boiled potatoes in the oven.
  • Garnish with coriander leaves and lemon. Serve with salads as a starter.

A close call for Kamya

Reena Thapar Kapoor

Hot wheels: Kamya Punjabi

Kamya Punjabi, aka Sindoor in Banoo Main Teri Dulhann, played a real-life heroine recently. A few days ago the actress was driving home in her Indica when she almost rammed into a young man. She says, "I think he was drunk. He came in front of my car out of no where. Even the people present at the spot assured me that it was he who was at fault." Kamya says that it was the scariest day of her life."

Talking more about the incident, Kamya elaborates, "He was right in front of my car. I was driving and had to hit the brake in a few seconds. In order to save his life, I took an emergency U-turn and hit the divider. Fortunately, the man was saved. I hurt my arm and lower back too."

"It could have been worse!" Kamya adds. But what appalled her was the man's attitude. "He was slurring and instead of thanking me, he castigated me saying, 'Thoda sambhal ke chalao!' (drive carefully)."

She says, "I just hopped into a cab and rushed home. Later, my car was sent to the garage. It's been four days and I've been travelling in an autorickshaw to get to my shoots."
