What's cooking? In Poonam's mind...and kitchen
|
Poonam Joshi, originally an Ekta Kapoor discovery, made heads turn when she quit Balaji's Kahiin Toh Hoga for a lead role in Zee's Tumhari Disha. Now she is seen in Woh Rahne Waali Mehlon Ki on Sahara One.
Shaaditimes catches up with true- foodie Poonam to know what's cooking in her mind and kitchen.
"Past-a" time "I love food and I'm a complete foodie. It's a very important part of my life and I also love to cook. Cooking is my favourite hobby and I have mastered it from my mom and keep on experimenting with dishes to make it different and unique. My master piece is roasted chicken. My favourite is Italian food specially pasta and white sauce which I can have anytime during the day. Among the Indian dishes I love typical Gujarati home made meals. I have an over-sized sweet tooth. I love chocolate cake and it should be really really chocolaty and creamy. I love the food at Moshe's, Spaghetti Kitchen and Urban Tadka in Mumbai."

Calorie control
Due to Poonam's love for extra rich food loaded with carbs, "I find it very difficult to control my
diet. I find it very difficult to watch out for calories before I eat. The only way I can control this is by allowing myself to eat a sweet dish once a week. This is the only amount of
dieting I can follow. Also I try to stick to simple home food which is cooked in minimum oil. While eating out I avoid fried stuff and
junk food. The best way to do this is to stuff a small meal at home before going to a party. Then I start the meal at the party with lots of salads so by the time I proceed to the main course I am almost full and have no choice but to eat as little as possible.
No spice in lifeI do not like
fruits very much. I am very selective about it and like only water melon and oranges. However I compensate the lack of fruits with fresh salads in my meals and I ensure that I have sweet
coconut water once everyday. It's my favourite drink. I have no spice in my life as I avoid
spicy food. I prefer bland flavours. Though I love
pani puri and
vada pao I try to avoid them as they are not always very healthy.
Fad is not badI am a bit lazy and manage to visit the
gym 3-4 times a week. I mix cardio and weights on alternate days. I strongly believe exercise should be an integral part of everyone's life. Even if you can't do it everyday, do it as and when you get time. The main point is that you should enjoy doing it, otherwise it makes no sense. Though it is becoming a fad among youngsters now, I don't think that it is bad. In fact the
bargain is good and you are the one who would benefit whether you join a gym, go for a walk or
practice yoga.
Smiling faceThe best part of my features is my smile. And if I had the chance to change one thing about myself I wish I could change the tendency of putting on weight. Then I could go on eating anything I wish without thinking twice. It would be a blissful life then! I admire
John Abraham for his sculptured body and
Malaika Arora for her hour glass frame.
Dream dateIt would be a dream come true if I could go out on a date with Shahrukh Khan. I love beaches so I would love to spend a quiet evening by seaside chatting with him and then would like to wind it up with a candle light dinner.
Beauty tipsI think a balanced diet with some exercise and right hours of sleep can work wonders. It would add a glow to your skin automatically. I don't take any extra care of my skin except these and some basic cleaning, toning and moisturising as I don't get much time. I love to colour my hair brown with blonde streaks. Since it tends to become rough because of different styling products during shooting I go for a regular head massage and hair pack once every week.
Stress busterI have been following Buddhism for the last 3 years and now it has become a way of my life and have helped me to shape up as a good human being. Buddhism teaches different ways to look at life and find peace in even in adverse situations. It has made my life much more easier and simpler. During difficult times it has helped me to find strength of mind and confidence in myself in moving out of the problems. Today even after long hours of work I do not feel the pressure so much may be because of my faith in Buddhism. I enjoy my work and though I do not get complete sleep I do not feel the stress so much.
Poonam's roasted chicken recipe - Marinate chicken (500 gms) in tomato puree (3 tbsps), soya sauce (2 tbsps) and Worcestershire sauce (2 tbsps) with little ginger garlic paste (2 tsps each) for 5-6 hours.
- Then roast with onions and boiled potatoes in the oven.
- Garnish with coriander leaves and lemon. Serve with salads as a starter.
