There was a little bit of Soorajji in everyone: Lata

By Alok Hisaria

It's being said that you got the chance to act in Vivaah because of Rehne Vaali Mehlon Ki?
Yes. Soorajji is very observant. He just saw one shot of mine in the serial where I play Bhavna. He immediately called me up to audition for Vivaah.

How was the experience of playing Shahid's bhabhi?
More than being my devar, Shahid was a friend. We shared a lot of memorable moments. I had an excellent rapport with Shahid. Even Sameer (Soni) who played my husband was great to work with. All in all, I can just say that it was a complete role.

Your experience of working with the young guns of the industry, Shahid and Amrita?
Both are very sweet.

And what about Sooraj Barjatya, who's said to be a good director and a human being?
I was obviously excited, as it was my first film. Working under Sooraji, I not only improved as an actor, but also learnt a lot about life. He has inspired me a great deal.

Did the entire unit actually bond like a family?
Yeah, definitely. The bond was so strong that a spot boy from the unit met me after months on a different set and still remembered that I don't add sugar to my coffee. It was a great unit to work with. Everyone had a little bit of Soraajji in them.

How has your television journey been so far?
Obviously the journey has been nice otherwise I wouldn't have been here. Before Rehnewali Mehlon Ki, I have done Jannat on Star Plus, Awaaz Dil Se Dil Tak on Zee, Ye Duniya Hai Rangeen on Sony and lot more. I had to wait for a while between every project I got, which was frustrating. That period of waiting for the opportunity is very difficult to pass by. I wouldn't say I have worked a lot. There's a lot more that I want to do.

What do you enjoy more — working in television or movies?
I started with television, so certainly I am attached to the medium. The film industry is the ultimate goal for most of us. In television there's a lot of pressure and all are in a hurry to complete the scenes. But in films you get time to work on your each and every scene.

When would we see Lata Sabervaal's Vivaah happening?
It all depends on the destiny. Whenever I get a person I shall surely get married to him.

Happy bookworm: Poonam Joshi with her books
Poonam Joshi, who played Mahek in Kahiin To Hoga and is now seen as Sanjana in SaharaOne's Woh Rehne Waali Mehlon Ki, has an obsession for books. She has hundreds of tomes at home and her collection includes fiction, non-fiction, philosophy and spirituality. The actress is single and finds books a good source of companionship.

"I don't lend my books to anyone as they are never returned," laments Poonam. "A friend borrowed this book called PS, I Love You by Cecelia Ahern and that was the last I saw of it. The book was lost and I haven't forgiven her for it!"

Booked!

The actress has a special corner of shelves for her beloved books. She takes care of that 'book nook' herself. "I dust the shelf and books myself. Every now and then, I rearrange them according to their subjects. At the moment, I have placed them in alphabetical order," she says.

Poonam has been a voracious reader since childhood. "Reading was a habit inculcated in me as a kid. Later on, I continued to read and added to my collection. At any given time, there are at least two to three books in my car. I carry my books to shoots as well."

She makes it a point never to buy books off the roadside or at traffic signals. "They are not of good quality and are often poor imitations. I prefer to purchase them at bookstores like Crossword and Landmark. At such places, you get to know the latest arrivals as well."

Food for thought

Her favourites include Ayn Rand's The Fountainhead and Atlas Shrugged, Robert James Waller's The Bridges of Madison County and Jeffrey Archer's Kane and Abel, which she keeps reading every now and then. "I must have read these books at least six times."

The latest additions to her bookshelf are books on Buddhism. "It is interesting to read about their school of thought. I buy all kinds of books, from Sidney Sheldon paperbacks to stuff by lesser known authors."

Did you know?

Siblings Sharman Joshi and Manasi Roy are Poonam's cousins
Manish Raisighania played her husband Varun in Kahiin To Hoga, and then her son Veer in Tumhari Disha

Poonam made her telly debut with Kahiin To Hoga and was later seen in Kahaani Ghar Ghar Kii, Kya Hadsaa Kya Haqueeqat, Kavyanjali and Tumhari Disha
Poonam is from Pune

When Reena Kapoor hitched a free ride

HARSHADA REGE

When Reena Kapoor went on a trip to the Andaman Islands with her husband, she never thought that she would be recognised there as well. The actor who now plays Pari in Woh Rehne Wali Mehelon Ki says she is lucky to have got a break from her hectic shooting schedule. "Since I am playing the lead role, I have to be present almost everyday," she says Reena adds that though the break has come after a long time, she is happy to be back. "I have about five days off in a week so I asked the production house to club all the days so I could take my holiday at one go. My husband, too, took some time out and off we went," she says. Reena says that she was amazed to see the popularity that Indian serials enjoy in places so far away. "I remember, we wanted to go to an island and there was only one ship that ferries you across. However, since all the tickets were booked we couldn't get any place.

Nevertheless, we went again in the morning to see if we could get the tickets, but we couldn't manage to get any," says Reena. Just as Reena and her husband were about to return, one of crew members called out to her with her screen name — Pari. "I was surprised to know that he knew my name. When I told him that I was here on a short holiday and would have to go back without seeing the other island, he said he'll try to get us a seat on the ship. He spoke to his seniors and got us a place on board," she laughs. And it proved to be a great journey for Reena, who was escorted to the captain's cabin and got to enjoy the rest of the journey. "I got the best view one could get. All thanks to my serial. From being ticketless, I was treated like royalty," she says. After the short break, Reena is back to the sets and is happy with the way her role has shaped up. "The only thing I need now is a break to get over my break!" she laughs.

My Character & I
By: A hitList Correspondent
November 7, 2006

What is special about your character?
My character Sanjana is madly in love with Saumya (Aamir Ali). She can go to any extent to get her love. Initially, Sanjana was positive but later turned negative. It is also the first time I am playing a negative role on TV.

Does Saumya also care for Sanjana?
Sanjana can't live without Saumya. He, too, loves her equally. Sanjana was a part of Saumya's life but it was a well-kept secret. Though he got married to Pari (Reena Kapoor), I was the woman he always loved, and not Pari.

Why is Pari tolerating Sanjana?
Sanjana has made it extremely clear to Pari that she wants to get married to Saumya. She expects Pari to pass away soon as it has been told that Saumya's first wife is supposed to die after 40 days of marriage. Pari is tolerating everything because she has accepted her fate and till the time she is alive she wants to be the perfect wife and daughter-in-law.

Sanjana has a distinct western look
After a long time, I am out of salwar kurtas and saris — what I always wore in my earlier shows. As Sanjana, I look my own age. I am wearing jeans and skirts.

Do you think Sanjanas exist in real life?
It is possible for Sanjanas to exist in real life as love can make people go to any extent. In that sense, it is considerably a real character. In normal life, not many people go the extent of killing someone but people do cross limits, which they know they should not.

What is the clear-cut agenda of Sanjana?
Sanjana's sole objective is to get married to Saumya. She will do anything to achieve this. She has the support of Saumya as well as his family. So Sanjana's work is done — well almost!

Vamps sting with a difference

Just when telly soaps seemed to be saturated with flashy, over the top, vampish characters namely, Komalika, Ramola Sikand, Pallavi ….there seems to be a rising crop of hatke evil ladies who slowly but surely are on their way to redefine the 'vamps of the small screen'.

They have tried to strip away the layers of artificiality - from the garish greasepaint, from hamming their acerbic lines, from donning retina-pinching outfits and from air talking!

We are talking about the new age vamps - Sindoora of Banu Main Teri Dulhan, Maya of Karam Apna Apna, Kaveri of Saat Phere, Barnali of Kasamh Se and Tulika of Ek Ladki Anjaani Si.

Tellychakkar.com finds out from these oh-so-cool-and-evil vamps about the transition and difference between the previous and current genre of scheming ladies of the tube.

Aanchal Dwivedi
- The current lot of vamps is smarter in terms of looks and attitude, and that is very much in demand. They dress very well and are realistic. Previously characters like that of Komalika were out and out negative. In comparison, my character of Kaveri in Saat Phere is quite human. To cite an incident, when in a recent episode my husband Samar became blind, Kaveri was hurt as any normal wife would be. Sometimes when I read the script I laugh thinking, 'Oh I have to be this evil.' I can easily emotionally disconnect from Kaveri post the shoot as I don't carry the character outside sets.

Geetanjali Tikekar- My character Maya in Karam Apna Apna has a humorous edge to her mannerisms. She has no good designs on her, is insecure and is an attention seeker like a page three butterfly. But she is not out to kill someone which Apo*na (my character in Kassauti Zindagi Kay) was capable of. Apo*na had no limits but Maya is quite real. Today's vamps are not loud and don't wear excessive make up. During the initial days, when I essayed Apo*na, I used to be disturbed at times, but now after four years of working I can comfortably switch off.

Kamya Punjabi
- Till date I have mostly played negative roles. Right now I have Woh Rehne Wali Mahlon Ki as well as Banu Main Teri Dulhan in my kitty where I spread viciousness. Talking about the vamp's look, yes it does matter. Like in Dulhan my look is simple and subtle. My character Sindoora wears cotton saris, a nose ring and contact lenses. Also in Woh Rehne Wali…I wear chiffon saris and simple blouses sans contact lenses. Vamps of current times are negative as before but convincing at the same time. They are the hero from episode one. A heroine may get married four times but a vamp focuses only on the hero! Once the shoot is over , sometimes I do tend to remain in the character. At times my pals and co-stars have to come forward to tell me to better be normal!

Arzoo Govitrikar-
Today's vamps are a little more subtle, do less natak and less make up. They are more realistic than before as the writer and director gives them strong reasons to behave the way they do. Vamps add more glam quotient to serials compared to the leading ladies. I don't carry my negative characters home, as I'm just acting in front of the camera. But, I believe that the common man does feel that in real life we are as bad as our characters on screen.

Nigaar Z. Khan-
The previous vamps used to be little over the top in everything. My characters in India Calling and Kasamh Se are not born evil. I feel one need not look vicious to act vicious. The vamp of today is realistic. I don't put any extra bindis or fully loaded lipstick. I make the character look good and sexy and not gaudy. Once the director says cut I am Nigaar Z. khan.

TV actress Reena Kapoor says being a vegetarian has never deterred her from trying out different types of cuisine

Her soft, innocent look is a sure magnet, and she perhaps knows it. And that bonbon smile needs no justification after a while. TV actress Reena Kapoor is the typical Indian face that you would imagine Rajashri Productions to work with. In fact, the well-known production house started off its TV production wing by launching Reena, for the daily on SaharaOne, Woh Rehne Waali Mehlon Ki. Rounding off a year now in May-end, the serial has made a difference to the channel's viewer chart.

"I sometimes have to tell myself that my name is Reena and not Rani, the serial's protagonist." Obviously happy at the new feeling of recognition that greets her on the road, she orders "a light lunch" that includes a vegetable soup, some bread and "some cheese-based accompaniments", and settles down to talk. "Acting has always been my hobby and suddenly it has become my profession. When this role came up, I thought I have the talent and the confidence required for it, so why not give it a shot? Now on looking back after a year, I feel it was worth it more because I didn't have to struggle much to get it."

Broccoli soup

The soup arrives and so do the accompaniments. One spoonful of the soup and Reena comments, "Quite yummy. The taste of broccoli is dominant and that is interesting." For the last three years, she says she has been a vegetarian "not on religious grounds but just because being vegetarian has its benefits health wise." But that doesn't stop her from trying out different kinds of cuisine, she highlights.

"I don't get much time to go to the kitchen because Woh Rehne Waali... is a daily and the shooting hours are long but whenever I can take out time I cook my special vegetarian fare for my family." Reena also claims in the same breath: "I can cook some amazing vegetarian Chinese stuff. But my mushroom chawal and rajma-chawal are particularly appreciated."

Flashing that lovely smile, she adds, "But to a non-vegetarian, all these specialities don't mean much. I am often discounted as ghas-phus khaane wali." But for such a person, she has a line ready, "I want to tell them that you don't need chicken and eggs to survive."

Eat to live

Born and brought up in Mumbai, Reena did a few plays all for the love of the experience but never went to a formal training school. And now, she feels it has its benefits. "Formal training helps you in brushing up your talent no doubt but firstly, that spark has to be there in you."

Even as she finishes off her "light lunch", you are left wondering at her small meal for a long day of media interviews and late night return to Mumbai. "I eat only when I am hungry. It might look a small meal to you for a lunch but it has enough nutrients to carry me through the day," says Reena. And as the waiter intervenes to offer a sweet dish, she says a polite no. For reasons you don't want her to repeat.

I am not a mimic, and so I will play Jigyasa differently: Jaya By Sneha Hazarika

Once upon a time Jaya Bhattacharya was stamped as a vamp with her powerful portrayal of negative character Payal in Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi. But today, she has successfully shrugged off that tag with a variety of roles in serials like Karam Apna Apna, Wo Rehne Waali Mehlon Ki, Thodi Si Zameen, Thoda Aasman and the newest Kasamh Se where she has replaced Ashwiini Kalsekar as Jigyaysa.

You have replaced Ashwini Kalsekar in Kasamh Se. What newness would now be seen in the character of Jigyasaa?
I have just started shooting and am still trying to understand the character. I'm not a mimic and will certainly play Jigyasaa differently by putting extra effort in developing the character.

How is the experience of working with the Kasamh Se unit comprising actors like Ram Kapoor, Prachi Desai, Roshni Chopra et al?
It's been awesome. They all are very nice people to work with. At first I was surely scared to join a new set up. But things got eased up within minutes. Ashwini (Kalsekar) and I are also good friends. It was an amicable thing, a decision which was taken by the production house. I haven't got any single bad comment from my new gang of co-actors.

How different would be the look of Jigyasaa from the earlier one?
It would more or less be the same look. It all happened very rapidly and I didn't have any time and energy to think about it. But I would certainly see what efforts and inputs I could put into the character of Jigyaasa.

You are doing the dailies, Wo Rehne Vaali Mehlon Ki, Karam Apna Apna and Kasamh Se. In addition to this, you are also seen in a one-hour weekly Thodi Si Zameen Thoda Sa Asmaan. How do you manage your time?
That's the one-million dollar question. It's not new to me. There was a time when I was doing two dailies along with two weeklies. With time, you as an actor learn to manage your time.

What do you enjoy more? Playing a character which is your age like in Thodi Si Zameen Thoda Sa Asmaan or the motherly characters?
It is not about enjoying more. I can be more like myself in Thodi Si Zameen Thoda Sa Asmaan. I am very natural while playing this character. In Karam Apna Apna I am playing the character of a normal socialite, while in Kasamh Se I would be playing a negative role. You can see that all the three characters have different shades. And that's the challenge I enjoy the most.

We have heard that you are very fond of animals!
I just love them. My cat just wants to stick to me. He even follows me to the bathroom. Apart from the cat, I have four German Shephards, who are also a part of my family. They are all very dear to me. I hope I could have given them some more time. I sometimes feel guilty due to that.

Dance shows are the in thing. Will we ever be seeing Jaya displaying her dancing skills in a reality show?
I don't think so. I have learned Kathak, but I am not the one who can do the kamar latkao kind of dances. I dance for my own joy. I don't believe in dancing for others.

You have done a lot of movies too. Are you working on any movie at present?
Not at the moment.

NB2 shows the door to Arjun-Gurdip!

Five more rounds to go and the competition gets fierce! Nach Baliye 2 gets all

the more interesting with exciting themes, rocking performances, raging vote outs and a slight taste of controversy!

With Shweta Tiwari and Raja Choudhry been shown the exit door in the last episode, this time it's Arjun Punjj and Gurdip Kohli who were there in the bottom two last time! "It was quite expected, they were there in the bottom 2 last time, and also, they had low scores," says the source.

The romance theme proved to be lucky for Hussain and Tina as they scored a 30 for the first time. Gauri and Yash Tonk too gave their in best and got the best scores.

And for the first time Manav and Shweta were trapped in the bottom two. Well lets see if their way of innovative campaigning can change their fate!

Poonam Joshi's quite birthday
Poonam Joshi who is doing only one show Woh Rehne Wali Mehlo Ki at the moment, turned a year older yesterday. The actor known to keep a low profile celebrated her birthday with a close set of friends. Assuming her parents stay in neighbouring city Pune would have wished her good luck besides not to forget her good friend Aamna Sharif. There are actors who throw a lavish birthday party to let anyone and everyone know about it by shouting from their roof top but there are some actors like Poonam who like to keep mum about thier plans. Aamna also had kept her birthday a low key private affair recently. We wonder if Poonam is following her close friend Aamna or vice versa is it. Whatever the case we wish her a happy belated birthday.

Poonam Joshi aka Sanjana of Woh Rehne Waali Mehlon Ki was left without money when her ATM card gave way

Mumbai Mirror Bureau

It was one of those days when Poonam Joshi aka Sanjana of Woh Rehne Waali Mehlon Ki ran out of luck. Poonam had gone to an ATM kiosk to withdraw some cash, only to realise that the card wouldn't function. A fluttered Poonam didn't know what to do. "It was a Saturday afternoon and I needed some money. I kept trying my card but it didn't function. I was worried because most of the banks would be closed over the weekend. And I had absolutely no cash on hand," Poonam recalls.

And as luck would have had it, Poonam had to leave the kiosk without withdrawing money. "I felt so helpless. Despite having a considerable sum of money in my account, I was a broke. I had intended to do some Diwali shopping with and my plans just fell through," says Poonam.

Ultimately it was her friends who came to her rescue. Poonam says, "I had no other option but to borrow money from my friends."

However, Poonam has often found herself in sticky situations because of her forgetfulness. "I often forget my keys, my wallet and even my cellphone. But God is always there to save me," she smiles.
