Early Life and Family:

Born on 9 November 1956 in Punjab, Pankaj Dheer belonged to a family with creative roots — his father, C. L. Dheer, was associated with the film industry. Initially inclined toward direction, Pankaj found his way in front of the camera and soon became one of television’s most respected faces.

He was married to Anita Dheer, and the couple’s son, Nikitin Dheer, followed in his footsteps, appearing in several Bollywood films such as Chennai Express, Jodhaa Akbar, and Sooryavanshi. Nikitin is married to television actress Kratika Sengar.

Career Highlights:

Pankaj Dheer’s acting journey began in the early 1980s with films like Sookha (1983). Over the years, he made his mark with supporting roles in movies such as Sadak, Baadshah, and Soldier. However, it was television that truly brought him widespread fame and admiration.

He appeared in several notable serials, including Chandrakanta, The Great Maratha, Yug, and Badho Bahu, showcasing his versatility as an actor who could effortlessly shift between mythological, historical, and contemporary roles.

He also stepped into direction with the 2014 film My Father Godfather. Despite being offered opportunities to reprise Karna in modern adaptations of Mahabharat, Dheer reportedly declined, saying he did not wish to dilute the emotional connection audiences had with his original performance.

Health Struggles and Passing:

Pankaj Dheer had been fighting cancer for some time. After undergoing surgery and showing signs of recovery, his health took a downturn when the illness returned. On 15 October 2025, he breathed his last at his Mumbai residence. His cremation took place later the same day in Vile Parle, attended by family, close friends, and several colleagues from the industry.

Condolences poured in from across the entertainment fraternity. Many of his co-actors from Mahabharat remembered him as a warm, disciplined, and deeply spiritual man.
