Hi Shruthi, a perfect post to say the gist of this Swayamvar. Ram had to be refrained from action as he was not ordered to do that task. he has been loaned to Maharshi Vishwamithra by his father and till he (rishi) returns him to his father Dashrath, Ram had to act only on his Guru or shall I say at the moment, his foster father's instructions. This he had been telling alkshman as and when he was insisting on returning to Ayodhya that since they have come with Guru, unless he orders us to go back, we shall not act or ask his permission in that line. So how will he act on his own when the question is not just a bow but the future of a girl, relationship between 2 countries and the future of 3 more girls in that family. He was not aware of the fact that an invite for him had been sent to Ayodhya and without an invite, how can he take part in the Swayamvar. If there was an invitation and his participation was needed, then his father would have sent in a word in that regard which was missing at the moment. If King Janak had thought him to take part in the contest, atleast he would have indicated this wish to Gutru Vishwamithra and that would have been conveyed to Raghav. But his Guru had only indicated that they are visiting Mithila only to view and bow down to Shiv Dhanusha nd not to string that bow and accept Mithili's hand. So he felt he was not considered as a prospective groom for Janaki and when the bride's father has not considered him as match to his daughter, how can he disregard his (a father's) selection and intrude??? Even after his beloved brother's hurt outburst, he kept quiet and tried quitening Lakshman, but never crossed his boarder line and asked permission. he was confident that if he was to string the bow, then his Guru will order him and bless him to succeed. Without the blessings of his elders, he can't visualize himself taking part in task.
Though he got an order from his Guru to string the bow, he sought a silent permission from Raja Janak and only after obtaining his silent nod, did he lifted his step towards the bow.
Sorry to say this and but when you all saw his assurance to Sita and her happy tears after his victory in romantic mood, I felt that as reassurance from him that don't worry, since my Guru has asked me to silence all those abusers who abused your father, I will do the needful. Don't feel bad for your father that he has to go through this pain for your sake. Hereaftyer, no one will call him a cheater and his daughter an orphan. Be happy as your father's respect will be regained.
Later on his success, Sita felt so greatful to him that he ensured that his father's challenge kept for the Swayamvar was not baseless but his love for his daughter. Pain her family and people (whole of Mithila) felt when none could lift the bow was tremendous and they were bending in that pressure on thinking their princess could not get a suitable match and this will remain as insult to her land. The reason her father gave in fixing the Swayamvar was to get her married so that the way for her sisters marriage is cleared but it looked as if the boulder which completely blocked their chances of marriage as well. Her parents will never get that peaceful mind if she were not married and the word spread around. So when he lifted the bow, for her he looked like a savior who lifted all her burden and eased her and her parents and her state from the humiliation, pain and distress. he looked more like a God than a partner.
