But I do want to express a major misgiving that I have restrained so far in some token disagreements only, normally as an avoidance and also as a deference to the 'opinions'- so to say.
The prevailing refrain is 'Her willing 'choice' in opting to marry'. 'Her wounded 'pride' in her 'choice' to marry'. In short, Her 'hasty' (and!) 'decision'!! None of this has a just base in objective facts that narrative is presenting (even much more NOT SO in the source). A one easy finger is, "but she did marry 'in spite of' her being a modern, decisive, adult person, 'that she is'. It becomes a 'choice' and 'decision'."...Can't see a logic more twisted to browbeat entire portrayal of the narrative... Questions are; 1) was she decisive? And even more 2) 'was it her choice?'...
The back episodes clearly showed; a) an inert numbness after the fatal stab. And b) it was her complete submission to what her father is 'deciding' for her. Her father's honour and family's compulsion. She was accepting what is being 'thrust' on her as dead acceptance. There was a specific dialogue on her,' bapu janha kahenge...' And VC had avowed, 'Kumud shall get married on the same day.' Also,"meri zindgi ka faisala me nahi...and 'i have no dream now, i would only fulfil parents' wish and guidance..." A two way thrust, imposed on her by a reneging suitor and panicked father. How do one take away any liability from these two 'deciding' forces??
As for 'choice', when since a dead acceptance/ submission- like a doomed person unable to maintain foothold under force of flood torrent- would be deemed a choice?! Two scenes are enough- her indifference to see the photograph of 'choice'. And her inability to participate any ritual in the marriage- so much that a parent had to come and nudge her onwards.

What a convolution? A culprit who individually alone has opened a floodgate, is granted lee way of a 'past trauma rendering him incapable of rationale' and hence not truly culpable of the 'action'. But victim of that flood- because she is 'adult' and happened to be in the way of an unleashed flood- is actually a culprit for allowing that flood to sweep her away! Amazing. 'Decision' and Choices?! Indeed.

@ underline and sp. bold one, a subtle shift suiting current palates, perhaps. But still all remains same if we scrutinise even today- as argued in P7 response. 😛
But Hgg, I also noticed, we are defending similar viewpoint, maybe coming from slightly different perspectives.😆😆

Smrth, again it brings us back to hggs brilliant post on limited choices vs free choices. In whatever limited options she had, she did not crumble, picked the right one acc to her, in the circumstances and is now "man" enough to stand by it and want to make the best of it and not walk away.

I loved your rationale too of doing it so that her father is cushioned from the realization of the impact of his disastrous choice. It is in keeping with her character.

She is the victim, yet she refuses to be one, and stands tall and strong.

Saras IMO, will always be the guilty one here, his unthinking act caused this.

She too could have chosen to hide behind the same excuse of emotional trauma, crumbled and collapsed, but she did not, she made a choice, and so she feels she must lie in the bed she herself made!

She was much more responsible than her father. The CVs might not think so, most of the audience might not. But I just cant take the blame away from VC.

Disclaimer - I know I'm going to be on the losing side here, but knowing CB-wale, atleast I wont get lynched...😃

Santhi's use of imagery above inspired this "Guru-Sishya ki kahaani"...

Think of Kumud as the teacher. and Saras is her student; instinct tells her he is Special 🤓, but...

Saras fails the pre-Term Test😳, and K forms a poor opinion of him. (swaarthi, darpok, rishton se bhaagnewaala.)🤔

During the course of the term, Saras gets many lessons, and his performance in the continuous assessments shows remarkable improvement, the graph has a few stutters, but is mostly a steep rising curve. 😊 Wow, Kumud is delighted 😃 to have found a star-student, who shines in all his subjects and is so popular as well as hardworking and always tries to keep teacher's smile (and pride) intact.

If anyone needs reminding, the tests included:
- Saving boy from pond
- Saving K's father's from the fire in the kaarkhaana👍🏼
- Playing Hide-and seek with K to see her face
- Saving K's kite from *that* pond
- Saving K's brother and family from the fall-out of his bad driving..😆
- Learning to make pots, sell pots, etc. etc.
- Learning all about special RN etiquette as in chaar-kadam-ki-doori🤢
- Saving K from rioting crowd in Town
- Learning to dance the garba while relentlessly compared with K's bachpan ke dost
- Applying mehndi, haldi, etc, etc.
- Proposing to K in front of a hall full of family and neighbours👏

- Saving K's family from elopement of youngest daughter with a married man..⭐️
- Keeping above test a secret to help K's family⭐️⭐️

- **Genda Phool night**🤬
- Defending K's honour when GP night news reaches the Local Spy 🤗

- Giving ICT lesson in Video-conferencing for K's family😊
- Saying Good-Bye at any cost before leaving for Dubai
- Decorating room in K's then to-be sasuraal to delight and re-assure ❤️
- Kadva Chauth Test❤️❤️

Unfortunately, Saras fails the main Board exam ... Turning up for the Shaadi!
In fact he called Teacher the night before exam and mumbles some gobbledygook about how after all the efforts both of them had made for so many months, he is no longer interested in appearing!!😡

Kumud the teacher then unhappily (and insanely) tears up all the assessment sheets and burns the shreds. She goes back to the pre-term Test result..."kamzor, darpok, rishton se bhaagnewaala"😲

She declares Saras has failed the exam, and let Her down... But nobody questions her as to how, why the hard-working student who showed stellar credits in all the assessments should be declared a faiiure!

- his pride / self respect
- his keeping one's head high
- his social parity with his peers in society and family
- his having to answer questions about his method of upbringing of his children
- his having to defend kumud's character
- his own lifetime of guilt for screwing up kumud's life (he had said yes both times - once to LN and once to saras)
- tremendous pressure to explain the why and why not for kumud and for the other kids
- his being the only head of the joint family
- his being reduced to a laughing stock - do baar topi pehnaya LN ke family mein

I suggest all of us try to internalize and feel if we can allow our father reduced to this!!!

As usual precise, clinical analysis in broken lines.👏

And reflecting a relevant 'seize' she is affecting (from p7)...

There is a also subtle strategy catering another contingency. For her, much serious and grave...a devoted daughter's valiant attempt to take away onus of 'decision' from a majorly erring father. For can we honestly believe this subtle 'usurpation of the 'coat and tie' that squarely 'belongs' to a - repeat- majorly erring father?!..her conscious or subconscious Preemptive move; she would soften a body blow of 'realisation' and absolution to a sinking father in whatever degree of mitigation that she may recoup. (objective base; her fierce protection of her father throughout the story. And, "Pramaad ki galtiyon ke liye apne ma bapu ke paas ansu nahi bahaogi") Also, we will see this when VC will start showing 'regret' and lament in her presence.

To what effect, as an individual viewer, attempting a personal impression...

As a seppaku committing Samurai wrote somewhere-

"My Life, came like dew
disappears like dew.
All of Naniwa
is dream after dream."

But she is firmly planted in 'reality'. She is a fighter and 'rejuvenator'...Will recoup water even from the 'dews'.She is attempting her own resurrection...

@happychappy,

If I have to use an analogy, to my mind its not of a student failing a board exam

He was afraid of driving

She taught him how

He was a good pupil

Aced every driving test

The night before he was to get the license

He got drunk

Drove extremely rashly

Crashed the car

While he is outwardly intact

She has been crippled for life

Has lost a limb and is on crutches for ever

He wants forgiveness

That's my analogy here!

happychappy-
unfortunately the end is far more different...

at the end due to what he says and does...the teacher has no option but to go to a jail (its either her or her family who will go to jail) where she will be forced to stay for the rest of her life, where the other inmates look down upon her and her cell-mate beats her up and continuously rags her...

then saras comes back and says I am sorry I messed up...hey..i noticed you are in a mess... but lets talk about me first...you know about the other day...Yeah I am sorry...now first things first...I want you to forgive me...then he goes ...hey what are you doing dear?...your cell-mate beats you up...I am going to report this to the warden ...the warden BTW thinks her cellmate is the most docile person and has milk of human kindness flowing through his veins...

"Tumhari Tarah bina soche samje, jazbaaton mein behke maine koi faisla nahin kiya.
Shaadi ke ek din pehle mera shaadi ka rishta toot gaya.
Mujhe to tumhe koste hue rote rehna chahiya tha na?

Kuonki bhale mere sapne toot gaye ho...par mera farz baaki tha"

I am not saying she doesn't love him or any of that.

But if we are willing to give such a looonnnggg rope to saras, we should also give a long rope to kumud too..

He screwed up her entire life...now he says sorry and all is forgiven...
But the person who got screwed and who is in an irrerversible situation now is expected to start dancing just because saras is now sorry?...and amazingly is the villian now???

Shouldn't kumud be entitled to her anger? Why should she forgive him so easily??

aah...smrth...you mention haiku...👏

here's one for kumud:

"Though it be broken,
Broken again,
Still its there,
The moon on the water"
