CHAPTER 3 *The Nightmare*

Rachna was taking her 7^th phera around the fire and her final vow of marriage. Happy she was and everyone else. Kabir felt happy too! He had atlast got what he wanted. He was with his Rachna and now nobody could separate them. Never ever!

Rachna looked beautiful clad in a pink Lehenga choli that Kabir had gifted her way back on her 18^th birthday. Ofcourse it was no designer dress but it did not matter. The fact that Rachna chose to wear his gifted "common" lehenga instead of designer wear was the most important for him.

But wait why was Rachna waving him good bye! Why on earth could Kabir not move? He wanted to go and get hold of his Rachna, hug her, tell her that he loved her. But he couldn't move! Rachna now sat in a car and was going out of sight! Kabir desperately tried to move, but he couldn't. With all his might he tried again and this time he was able to move! He ran... ran towards the car calling after Rachna.

"Rachna! Rachna! Rachna!"

The car stopped. Kabir finally reached the car and opened the door! Rachna came out of the car clad not in the lehenga he gifted her but in a saree. She was followed out of the car by another man. He said "Kya hua Rachna? Kaun hai yeh?"[What happened Rachna? Who is this?]

Rachna turned towards the man and shrugged.

"Pata nahi Rajat! Aap kaun hai? Kya hum aapko jante hain?"[I don't know Rajat! Who are you? Do we know u?] asked Rachna to Kabir

"Rachna? main Kabir! Tumhara Kabir! Tum.. main" [Rachna? m Kabir! Your Kabir! u.. am..]

"sorry but I don't know any Kabir! U are mistaken" said Rachna

In minutes Rachna got inside the car along with her husband and the car started moving again, leaving Kabir behind! Kabir was shocked,broken and did not know what to do and yet in vain he started running after the car shouting out her name...

"RACHNA" woke up Kabir in the middle of the night. He had had a nightmare. He got up from his bed and went straight into the bathroom and splashed water on his face. He wiped his face with his hand and then came out and sat on the sofa. He held his head with both his hands failing to understand what on earth he can do to help himself. Tears rolled down his eyes again and as he raised his head, his eyes fell on a photo kept on his table. It was a photo of Kabir and Rachna, clicked long back when they were both teenagers!

Kabir was lying on the hospital bed sleeping.

"Kabir.. Kabir.." called Rachna softly.

Kabir opened his eyes and looked around and found Rachna by his side. But instead of looking sick or sad he gave his naughty smile to Rachna and winked at her.

"Kabir? Tumne.. yeh sab.. hawww..." [Kabir? U did.. all this.. hawww...] smiled Rachna too! "aisa kaise? Kaise?" [How all this?]

Kabir tried to speak but his voice did not support him. He asked Rachna for the writing pad and pen kept at the side table. After 5 minutes of scribbling on the pad he handed it over to her. she read what he had written and then got up from her chair, teary eyed .

"Tumne yeh bas chhutiya ghar pe rehne ke liye kiya? Take main akele na rahun? Tum na Kabir tum pagal ho.. kyun kiya aise? Kyun.. tumhe pata hai na main tumhe taklif me nahi dekh sakti.." [U did all this just to spend your vacations at home? So I don't get lonely? Kabir u are just mad.. why u did this? why... U know that i can't see u in pain..]

Kabir had tonsil issues and hence he was forbidden from having ice cream or anything that was cold. Even one ice cream made him sick, putting him down with fever and his voice becoming sore. Kabir had however, knowingly gulped down 10 ice creams so that he fell sick enough to avoid going to his home town Kanpur along with his family. The cause behind this was that Rachna would be all by herself for the next one month with all her friends away on holidays. Rachna had on an earlier occasion mentioned that she was feeling bad that Kabir was going on a holiday and that she would have to stay all alone for the next one month. Kabir hearing Rachna say this had thought for one full day a way to stop himself from going on this tour and he had come up with this extraordinary idea of falling sick! For him what mattered then was to make Rachna happy by staying at home for her, with her.

Kabir tried to reply to Rachna's query but failed again so he snatched the writing pad away from her hand and wrote again with an angry face. He wrote that Kabir was not enjoying his condition but he could do anything to keep Rachna happy!

Rachna still teary eyed looked up at Kabir and held him by his ear saying, "agar phir kabhi aisa kiya chahe woh kisibhi wajahse ho main aunty ko batadungi ke tune yeh jaan bujhke kiya samjha?" [If u ever did anything like this again, whatever may the reason be, i'd tell aunty you did all this on purpose.. understood?]

Kabir made a face and caught hold of Rachna's long hair and Rachna started shouting, "Kabir chhod mujhe aah..aunty" [Kabir leave me... aah.. aunty]

Kabir's mom and Nimmi who were outside the room came in and saw the two 15 year old kids fighting and while she struggled to stop them from fighting Nimmi clicked photos with Kabir's mom's mobile camera!

It was this photo of Kabir and Rachna fighting that Rachna had got framed and gifted Kabir on his 16^th birthday! Kabir smiled even as he cried at this crucial moment of heartbreak as he thought of those days of the past.

Suddenly he thought, he could not take it anymore and decided that he would in fact tell Rachna the truth! He would tell her that he loved her, not just as a friend but more than a friend. He decided to tell her that he failed to imagine a life without her and that the mere thought of she going away from her scared the hell out of him.

"Main usse kal hi sab bata dunga. Phir jo hoga dekha jayega! Haan yahi sahi rahega. Iss tarah tadapne se to accha hai ki usse sab bata duun aur wohi faisla karle ki age kya hoga!" [I'd tell her everything tomorrow itself. Whatever happens i'll see it than! Yeah.. this would be right. It's better to tell her all this than to be in pain like this... than she'd herself decide whatever should happen next!] said Kabir to himself.

Almost determined that he would tell Rachna all about his feelings he then rose from his sofa and went to the balcony to grab some fresh air. He came out and looked around only to find that his neighbours had one of their room's lights still on. It was Rachna's room. He became curious as it was quite late in the night and Rachna seldom kept up late. He tried to find out what was going on. He saw Rachna was walking up and down her room. She was on her phone talking to someone, smiling throughout. For a moment Kabir thought it might be some friend but then it all struck him hard. Rachna never received calls after 11 in the night because her father did not approve of it. But today she was breaking her father's rules so it could not be just any friend. It had to be some special friend or as Kabir thought it was in all probability Rajat, Rachna's beau.

Kabir came back into his room. His determination shattered now. All throughout his life Kabir had always wanted Rachna's happiness more than anything else. He could bear all the pain inflicted upon himself if it could make Rachna happy. It had always been like that. Be it the time when he was 15 or now when he was 22. So if Rachna's happiness meant Kabir suffering the pain of losing Rachna herself Kabir could even do that.

Kabir now made the ultimate decision to let things go the way they are going and not to tell Rachna anything. He decided he would remain her best friend for life if that's what Rachna wants him to be.

However, this did not stop Kabir from being scared of losing her. As he went back to his bed a thousand thoughts revolved in his mind. Rachna was not married yet but she soon would be. What would he do then? Will he be able to deal with the actual pain of it when just the thoughts made him all terrified and pained? Kabir did not know.

Kabir woke up to Rachna's call the next morning.

"hello," said Kabir yawning

"Yeh kya tum abhi tak so rahe ho? Jaldi utho aur ready ho jao!"

[What, U are still sleeping? Hurry get up and get ready!]

"Ready? Kis liye?" [Ready? for what?]

"Bhul gaye tum aaj Rajat aa raha hai. Hum engagement ki shopping ke liye jaa rahe hain aur phir lunch pe chalenge!" [U forgot, today Rajat is coming. We are going for engagement shopping and than we'd go for lunch!]

Kabir sat up on his bed, "Rachna main nahi.." [Rachna I don't..]

"Haan haan mujhe pata tha, tujhe saare bahane abhi yaad ayenge kyun ke tu shopping pe nahi jana chahta.. koi bahana nahi chalega hum chal rahe hain aur main tujhe 10 minute me pick up karne jaa rahi huun bas!" [Yeah yeah I know, U will remember all your excuses now only because u don't like shopping... no excuse would work.. we are going, and i am coming to pick u up in 10 minutes.. that's it!] Rachna hung up.

Kabir on the other side of the phone sat on his bed distressed, not knowing how would he deal with Rachna shopping for another man instead of Kabir for the first time in the 22 years of his life.
