Chapter 1: THE UNEXPECTED VISITOR

"Arre yeh kya kar raha hai?? Chhod, chhod mujhe.. yeh kya kar rahe ho tum dono," [Arre.. what are u doing.. leave me leave me... what are u both doing??] shouted Daadi as Rachna and Kabir carried her to the next room. They settled Daadi on the Sofa and switched on her mythological show.

"Yeh sahi hai na Daadi.. aap Rachna ke room me aapka show dekho aur hum bahar video games khelenge!"[This is ok na daadi... u watch your show here in Rachna's room... and we'd play our video games outside] said Kabir giving Daadi his naughty smile.

Daadi attepted to rise from the sofa but Rachna held her by her shoulders tenderly and said "Daadi please na aap ihaan hi dekh lo na.. please.." [Daadi please u can watch your show here na...please]

"Tujhe isss chorre ne bigaad ke rakh diya hai Rachna.. Ja jake khelle apna khel.."

[This boy has spoiled u rachna... go and play your game]

"Thank you daadi!" said Kabir twitching Daadi's cheek endearingly to which Daadi smiled and said, "chal ja re chhore.. bada aaya"

Kabir smiled thinking of the past days. Rachna and Kabir have been best friends from the time they don't even remember. They have seen each other grow from babies to children,from children to adolescents, from adolescents to adults. They have always been together.It has always been this way. The thought of being separated from each other had never occurred to Kabir and Rachna.

Although Rachna still did not think over the matter of separation but it did loom large on Kabir's mind ever since he overheard Daadi's conversation about Rachna's marriage with her dad. It was that day that he had realized how much he is used to being with Rachna. It was that day which made him think of his life without Rachna. The resultant effect had been so devastating that he had not slept for the next one week. He could not simply imagine his life without her!

He had asked Mayank, his good friend, why he felt so devastated at the mere thought of staying away from Rachna?

It was Mayank who had told Kabir that he loves Rachna, something that everyone else knew, only he failed to realize. Mayank had asked Kabir to propose to Rachna before someone else woos her. Since then Kabir had been upto it. But somehow he failed at the same every time. He was scared, scared that Rachna might not be in love with him and that his proposal might ruin the friendship and the friendly love that is there between them. It took him almost a year to gather the courage to try and propose to her but then apparently he was way too late.

"Maine bohot der kardi na Rachna" said Kabir forgetting that Rachna was on the phone. He had not listened to a word Rachna had been uttering from a long time. He was rather lost in his own thoughts of Good days lost in time now.

"kya?? Der?? Kis bat ke liye? Kya hua Kabir?" [what? late? for what? what happened Kabir?]

Kabir did not reply. He was still lost in his thoughts.

"Kabir tum sunn rahe ho tabse sirf main hi bol rahi huun. Hua kya hai tumhe?? Kuch kehte kyun nahi? KABIR" [Kabir are u listening... Only i am talking from so long.. why are u not speaking anything? KABIR] said Rachna at the top of her voice.

This brought Kabir back to his senses. "Nahi kuch nahi. Rachna main tumse baad me baat karun? Mujhe kuch kaam hai. Bye" [Nothing. Rachna can i talk to you later? I have some work. bye]

"Par Kabir main.." [But kabir...] Kabir disconnected the call not letting Rachna complete the sentence.

Kabir was at a loss. He felt someone's dragging him out of his own life and he is so helpless that he cant do anything about it. He wanted to do something to help himself but he did not know what. All he was able to do was think of old days of childhood, adolescent when Rachna was all his, atleast that's what he thought back then. He badly,desperately, devastatingly wanted things to go back to being how it used to be. Sadly he dint know how!

Kabir was still lost in his thoughts when someone knocked at his door. Kabir was irritated by the knocking as he felt least hungry and had no urge to encounter anyone in his house. He shouted without opening the door,"mujhe bhook nahi hai mom. Aap log khalo" [I am not hungry mom.. U guys eat]

But whoever was at the door did not go and knocked at the door again.

"kaha na mujhe bhook nahi hai." [I said na I am not hungry]

There was a knock at the door again.

Kabir was annoyed and thinking that it was his cousin sister Nimisha who loved bugging him when he least wanted to be bugged. He got up from his bed and went up to his door to open it..

"Maine ekbaar kahana.."[I have said once na..] he stopped noticing the unexpected visitor outside his room

"Rachna! tum ihaan.. iss waqt?" [Rachna! U here... at this time?]

Chapter 2 *The Realization*

"Shhh...Zor se mat bolo. Dheere bolo..sabko lagta hain main ihaan Nimmi ko uska CD lautane aayi huun ander chalo"[Shh... Don't talk loudly... everybody thinks i am here to return Nimmi her CD... move inside..] said Rachna but as Kabir stood stunned Rachna pushed Kabir inside the room shutting the door behind her!

"Ab batao hua kya hai?"[Now tell what's wrong?]

Kabir was too stunned to react. He stood quietly while Rachna stared at him waiting for an answer.

"Arre aise kya khare ho bolo Kabir kya hua hai tumhe?"[arre why are you standing like this.. tell kabir.. what happened to u?] asked Rachna raising her voice a bit and shaking Kabir by the shoulder.

Kabir gathered himself together and said, "Mujhe kya hoga? Main bilkul thik huun. Tum batao tum ihaan iss waqt kya kar rahi ho?? Raat ke 10.30 baj rahe hain Rachna." [What would happen to me? I am totally fine... U tell.. what are u doing here at this time...? it's 10:30 at night!]

"Oho ho kuch nahi hua hai. Aur sawal ke badle mujhe hi sawal kar rahe ho! Baat to aise kar rahe ho jaise main pehle kabhi itne raat ko tumse milne nahi aayi.. abhi do din pehle hi hum raat ke 11 baje tak padh rahe the tumhare room me! Aur waise bhi main koi London se thodi hi na aayi huun. Bas pados me hi to rehti huun." [Oho so nothing happened. And instead of answering me u are asking me questions! And u are telling as if i have never came to meet u so late... only 2 days before we were studying in your room till 11 at night! And moreover i didn't come from London or somewhere...i live next to u only!]

"Rachna par woh aur baat hai exam ke waqt to.." [Rachna but that's different.. during exams...]

"koi aur baat nahi hai.. exam ke waqt main pareshan rehti huun aj tum ho.. to kya main tumse milne nahi aati.. ab yeh sab chhodo aur jaldi batao ke hua kya hai? Isse pehle ke daadi mujhe bulane aa jaye." [It's not different...during exams i am tensed and today u r... how could i not come to visit u... now leave all this and hurry up.. tell what's wrong before daadi comes to call me..]

"Rachna tum aise jhoot bolke kyun aayi ho milne? yaar tum..." [Rachna y u came lying like this? yaar u...]

"arre bas lecture band karo aur jaldi bolo hua kya? Kya bolna tha tumhe subah? Bola kyun nahi aur kis baat ke liye derr ho gayi." [arree.. Stop this lecture now and tell what happened? What u had to say in the morning? Why u didn't tell and u got late for what?"]

"Rachna kuch nahi. Please tum jao ihaanse. Mera bas mood thik nahi hai.." [Rachna it's nothing. Please go from here. I am not in a good mood..]

"Tu jata hai kya jab main bolti huun tujhe jaane ke liye? Dekh ab mujhe na woh kya kehta hai tu mujhe ziddi Billi banne par majbur mat kar." [U go when I ask u to leave? Now don't force me to become that what u say that ziddi billi(stubborn cat 😛)]

"Rachna, please yaar main..."

"Tu bolega ke main chikke aunty ko upar bulayun?"[U will tell or should I scream to call aunty here?]

"Rachna tum samajh kyun nahi.."[Rachna u r not understanding...]

"AUNTY!" shouted Rachna, "A..U..N..T..." Kabir held her from her back putting his palm over her mouth to stop her from shouting.

"Chup hoja..Tu na kabhi nahi sudhregi.. har baat pe itna zid karna zaruri hai kya?"

[Quiet!! U will never grow up... is it necessary to be so stubborn at everything?]

"m..u..j..e...chh..." [l.e..a..ve...mm..] mumbled Rachna through her covered mouth.

Kabir understood Rachna was struggling to speak. He immediately left her, realizing that they were too close. Kabir and Rachna were such good friends that being in close proximity with each other was a common phenomenon and it never bothered either of them but today Kabir felt how close he and Rachna stood to each other. It occurred to him for the first time and all of a sudden that she was not just his friend, not just his best buddy but also a girl who was someone else's betrothed. This thought left Kabir all the more dejected and pained though he tried desperately to keep his expressions normal.

Rachna gasped and said "ok to phir batao kya baat hai?"[Ok so tell what happened?]

"Woh.. woh main.. actually.." Kabir started thinking of a reason.

"kya yaar tu bhi? Itna vow to woh apne college ki woh cheer leaders bhi nahi khati! Bol na. I promise main sab thik kar dungi."

Hearing Rachna say that she would set things right Kabir could not help but smile. This was Rachna's patent dialogue. Whenever there was any problem in either Kabir or her life ,she would just say that she would set things right and Kabir would smile and believe that all will be well because Rachna said so. Together with Rachna he could set everything that ever went hay-wire back to normal and he had done that time and again. Whenever either of them were in trouble together they had worked out a solution. But today with the problem beingRachna going away from him and with little hope left of their being together to set things right Kabir wondered how would he deal with troubles hereafter.

"Kya Kabir aaj hua kya hai tumhe? Main phirse kab se bol rahi huun aur tum chup karke baithe hue ho. Bolo na kya hua??"[what... what is wrong with u today? Again I am talking and talking and u are sitting quiet like this... Tell what's wrong?]

"woh woh mera exam Rachna.. exam achha nahi hua.. main thikse likh nahi paya.. matlab mera kareeb 10-15 marks chhut gaya.. pata nahi kaise results.."[actually rachna... it's.. it's that, that I didn't do well on my exam... I wasn't able to write it properly... means that.. I almost left 10-15 marks.. don't know what results...]

"Kya kya kya?? TOPPER Kabir ji ka paper complete nahi hua iss liye woh itni NAUTANKI kar rahe hain? Tujhe pata bhi hai mere kitne marks chhut gaye?? Aur tu woh chhod Kabir, tujhe pata hai tere chinta me maine Khana bhi nahi khaya. Pagalo ki tarah ghar pe jhoot bolke tujhse milne aa gayi aur tu hai ki... aur yeh sab chhod tujhe pata hai main kitna darr gayi thi? laga jaise tujhe bohot taklif ho rahi hai aur tu dukhi hai. Aur tujhe pata haina main tujhe dukhi nahi dekh sakti.. Pagal tu bhi na .. jaan nikal di meri.." said Rachna hitting Kabir tenderly on his shoulder.

[what what what?? TOPPER Kabir ji didn't complete his paper and that's why he was doing such a DRAMA? Do u even know how much I have left? Leave that do u know I didn't even eat because of your behavior... came here lying to my parents like mads to meet u... and and leave all this do u even know how much I was afraid? Thought u were really depressed and in some pain... And u know na I can't see u in pain... u r such mad... u took me off my breaths...] said Rachna hitting Kabir tenderly on his shoulder.

Kabir kept looking at Rachna while she spoke.

" Ab 1 paper me 10 marks chhut gaye to kya baki papers me to tu top karega na! Ab yeh sab bhooljao aur jaldi bolo ke subah tum mujhse kya kehne wale the? Jo thoda complicated tha aur tum bina bataye chale aaye?" [ Now if u left 10 marks in one paper so what... in others u'll top... now just forget all this and tell what were u about to say to me in the morning..? which was a bit complicated and u went without telling me..?]

"Kuch nahi Rachna! woh to bas aiseyi.. main woh.. woh tumhare saath career plans discuss karna chahta tha.. par ab to.."

[It was nothing Rachna! I was just.. just.. I just wanted to discuss our career plans with u.. but now..]

"Ab to kya? Arre bas meri shadi ho rahi hai. Main padhayi nahi chhod rahi huun! Aur tum bhi na. Aj hi to exam khatam huye aur aj hi! Baad me karenge na discuss! aur Tu yeh mat sochna ke Shadi ho jayegi to main padhayi hi chhod dungi haan!" said Rachna happily. [Now what? Aree I am only getting married... not leaving my studies..! And u... today only our exams finished! We'll discuss later na..! And don't ever think that if I got married I'd leave my studies!]

Rachna's words, expressions ,her voice made Kabir realize that Rachna was very happy as far as her wedding was concerned and that she considered him (Kabir) nothing but a friend. He knew now for sure that Rachna was happy, happy about her wedding, happy even when she knew her marriage would bring about her distancing with Kabir. He did not know how to deal with this sudden Realization though as the Realization left him in terrible pain and yet he tried hard to control his emotions only for the sake of the girl sitting in front of him.

"Rachna woh mujhe na abhi kuch kaam karna hai. Main tumse kal milun?" Kabir rose from the sofa

[Rachna.. I have to do some work... I'll see u tomorrow?]

"Hmmm.." said Rachna rising from the sofa as well.

But as Kabir started walking towards the door, Rachna held him by the arm.

"Kabir! Aj tak maine tumse kabhi kuch nahi chhupaya hai. Tum yeh jaante hona! To mujhe bhi pura yakeen hai ke tum bhi mujhse kabhi kuch nahi chhupayoge!"

[Kabir! I have never hide anything from u till now. U know this right! So I also have total believe in u that u will also never hide anything form me!]

Kabir turned fully to face Rachna, he held her face in his hands, forced a smile and said, "tujhse zyada kareeb mujhse aur koi hai kya? To tujhse main kabhi kuch kaise chhupa sakta huun? Jao ghar jao,bohot raat ho gayi hai. Warna daadi aa jayegi!" [Is there anyone else closer to me than u? How can I ever hide anything from u? Now go home... it's late... else daadi would come!]

Rachna smiled back and together they moved towards the door.

As soon as Kabir shut the door behind Rachna he sat down on the floor with his back against the door, crying like a baby again after years but ironically for the same reason.
