sorry taikoo, but I strongly disagree...if u like classical maestros, u must be knowing what bade Ghulam Ali Khan saheb said abt film music..."ye log teen minute mein logon ko wo cheez de dete hai jise dene mein hum ustadon ko 2 ghante lag jaate hai"...

I feel that this is the golden period of music after kishore-rafi period. Lets talk abt saregamapa only. In the earlier version of this prog, we used to hear ONLY oldies from 60s etc, but now all the songs presented in this prog are new songs. BUT arent they good? As a singer myself, I used to earlier abhore singing new songs, but ask any singer and he will tell you that the songs which are now being composed are a challenge to sing. You have taans, gamaks, murkis, paltas and use of all three octaves in today's songs. And, to add here, even Pt. hariprasad Chaurasia commented that we classical musicians are all from some or the other gharana, but these music directors are from the gharana of GOD, since they dont follow any one school of music.

But, alas, as always, we always think that old was gold...new is always looked down upon..but this is human tendency. If you look objectively at things, you will understand what i mean.

i agree with you on some counts and differ on some. The music today is much better than the 80's or 90's. But if you are talking about everlasting melodies- though i agree that some songs composed are good and will last- most of songs will fizzle out.....will u remember songs from No entry/kyon ho gaya na/kasak. ..and so on for a very long time.

There are good songs made nowadays (around 15-20%), earlier all the songs which were composed were good (atleast 80/90%).

truly the music directors are talented but we cannot ignore the fact that they copy lot of tunes from pakistani source, folk music or western music.

Even yesteryear music directors did copy but that was very less and also mainly inspirational and not direct lift but nowadays you have music directors blatantly lift tunes.

I admire Music directors like shankar, ehsaan and loy, Jatin Lalit etc but you can never compare them to SD, shankar jaikishan, RD and so on.

i just read an interview of Udit narayan and he said that a singer today who sustains for 10 years will be equivalent to an earlier 40 yrs, because of the amount of work which is being done today.

Earlier compositions are everlasting today because earlier there was less work, and less exposure to audience. we had only one prog...binaca geet mala where you could listen to songs on radio..today everyday we hear 5 new songs and that too whole day on tv and radio..

still, if you still remember baazigar or khiladi songs...kudos to these music directors..

Taking a cheez(thats what we call a classical prosed composition) and a particular raag and presenting it differently can never be called a copy. Ask Pt Bhimsen Joshi, Pt Jasraj etc, and they will tell you that if they present a particular composition in a particular raag on 50 different concerts, it will have 50 versions....thats the amount of on-the-spot improvisation, which maestros do..Try listening to lets say Damadum mast Kalandar song, which is a veryyyy popular composition. I have listened to its versions by Runa laila, Ustad Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan, Begum Abida Parveen, Wadali bandhu and Hans Raj hans..and believe me, everybody is different and fabulous in their own way. Can anybody call them copycats???????

If u say, Nimbuda Nimbuda is again not original, then SD Burman was a pure copycat..the song sung by Mannada "pinjare waali muniya" (the famous song) was a copy of the awadhi folk..

Pleeease dont look at the lyrics..look at the presentation.

by the way to correct ur information.... pinjrewali muniya was from the film tisree kasam.. and music directors were shanker jaikishan not SD burman,,,

and upto some extent ur right... every body has copied.. including SD, op ,SJ ,C ramchadra... but if u see their original work.. they have proved and themselves very much.. which ismail has not( ewhat i think) yet..

and please please dont compare ismail, jl, as, hr with these greats....

for god sake!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

the example u gave about classical is totally wrong......

film music is very differernt from classical( i love both... and i dont think that classical is great and film music is not.. infact its more difficult to sing a raga based song within the span of 3- 4 minutes.. in a film music.. thats why i absolutely agree that lata mangeshkar is equally as great as kishori amonkar...(kishori is devine and lata is too)

but at the same time... i dont give credit to ismail for Albela sajan aayo re.. usmein usne naya kya kiya???????? similarly i also dont give credit to naushad for "his" Prem jogan banke from Mughal e azam.. because it is directly based on sohni ,, not a single word and note here and there.. but if u see "bekas pe karam ki jiye" which is a kedar its not directly based on a bandish

and again dont comapre ismail with naushad!!!!!!!

ISMAIL DARBARS HUM DIL... WAS A MUSICAL HIT.. BUT HOW MANY PEOPLE KNOW..
ALBELA SAJAN AAYO RE.. IS A FAMOUS CLASSICAL BANDISH OF RAGA "AHIR BHAIRAV" SUNG BY MANY GREATS LIKE PT BHIMSEN JOSHI, UST RASHID KHAN, USTD NISAR HUSIEN KHAN

CHAND CHUPA IS A LIFTED SONG
AND NIMBUDA NIMBUDA IS FAMOUS FOLK SONG.. SO SHOULD WE GIVE CREDIT TO ISMAIL?????????????
I AM NOT ONLY TARGETING HIM.. BUT ALL

Ismail has a rep. of overusing classical, but I noticed in almost every song he uses, he ends up using Yaman Kalyan or throws a Puriya Dhanasri phrase! I didn't know Pandit Birju Maharaj composed Kahe Ched Ched Mohe (though his voice was picturized on Jackie Schroff). Also, Monty did "Re Dola Re Dola."
